It's not about how many books you read, it's about how many books stay with you. That being said, I wish I could read, understand and remember like 30 books a month. Like that I might make a slight dent in them by the end of my life.

I've picked up multiple self-help books like "Essentialism" and most of them just turned out to be mostly about managing your company and businesses lol. So there I was sitting in my student house wearing a short with tiny sharks printed on it reading about how to maximise my hypothetical startup's profits and managing my imaginary employees.

Two years ago my therapist gave me Mans Search For Meaning and it changed me so profoundly that I still think about the quote on attitude pretty often and it really helps me get thru some of the tougher days. I can't recommend this book highly enough. I wish everybody would read it just once, because I truly believe it could help people so much.
    Also I subscribed, because you're amazing ❤

Yeah, pseudo business books annoy me so much. Especially when I see my boss raving about it. It's such a strange mindset that I don't get. The business world is littered with people who drink their own kool-aid and think some pretty basic ideas are life changing strategies. 'Be like the mouse getting it's cheese and embrace change!' Yes, thank you, I will remember that.
But I'm feeling quite cynical this year lol.

I read comics regularly and Monstress isn't easy to follow, definitely one of the more complex comics out there. I really love it, but I often have to go back and reread parts to understand everything. So don't feel discouraged about reading comics, graphic novels just based on this one. No to to talk you into reading them or anything, if they're not for you, then they're not for you.
16:37 I felt that. 😅 sure would be nice to have so much free time and so little stress you could be bored

Honestly when I read the first volume of Monstress I wasn't that into it either. I really loved the concept and wanted to give it a good try before letting it go. The second volume is what got me into the series, it is way less confusing and expands the story so much more. After reading volume 3 I revisited volume 1 and it made more sense. There are 5 volumes out so far but I am not caught up yet...

Its actually pretty common in the States for people to sacrifice sleep to do more things cause they think thats more productive. I also thought the same until I got into the habit of working all nighters only to get half as much work done as I would have if I had just gone to sleep even for a little bit and wake up refreshed and ready to go at it again. Mine is an extreme example but people frequently only get 3-4 hours of sleep because they think theres better things they could be spending their time on.

If you haven't read 'For Small Creatures Such as We' by Sasha Sagan, I highly recommend it. It's similar to Frankl's book, in that she looks at the ways humans have created meaning by celebrating all kinds of things throughout the cycles of our lives. Really makes you appreciate life and take a more conscious approach to the little everyday things.

If you want a 'girl power' story that does a good job illustrating how patriarchy (and also militarism/nationalism) works while also being really funny, check out 'Monstrous Regiment'. It follows Polly (AKA Oliver) who enrolls in the army to try and find her brother, and her growing friendships with the ragtag company of other late recruits (which includes a troll, a vampire, and an Igor). It also gets into some explorations of gender (one character very much reads as a trans man, for instance). Since it was written in 2003 by a straight cis dude, I was a little anxious about how it would feel in 2020 - but I think Terry Pratchett actually did a pretty good job. ajungleoftales.blogspot.com/2020/12/re-read-review-monstrous-regiment-by.html

As I understand Post-Modernism (and ofc I could be - as I often am - wrong), the inability to make sense of reality is not a proof of chaos but simply to be human. The PM believes that absolute Truth (objectivity, meaning, mission, purpose, etc) exists and only occasionally is revealed. Ps: edited for punctuation - apparently I could learn something from "Essentialism."

Same thought when Alice (a man-made machine with human-like brain a. intelligence), said in response to an unaccepting interviewer (real-worlder) who questioned Alice's right to be acknowledged as a human, "WHAT IF the real world is also a world created by others?"

Nice video, it was really interesting about the monkey analogy that there could be a meaning for life and suffering but we could never find out why. Like the monkey could never find out why humans are hurting them. It's possible an alien world is using us for their purpose like we are using the monkey for our purpose.

i’d suggest picking up a graphic novels, since the illustrations can help understand the overall meaning, or a book you’ve already read in your mother tongue so you already know what’s going on! what also works for me is trying to guess most words by context because stopping every time really breaks the flow of reading for me... anyway, hope it helps! 😊

I learned through cartoons with subtitles tbh and the rest I just absorbed through children's books, a dictionary is helpful but it ruins the pace so I would just try to understand unfamiliar words through the context
