Russian casualty figures in Bakhmut prove that Ukraine was right to ignore US advice to retreat from Bakhmut, says General Jack Keane.

Russia is making slow progress in the areas surrounding Bakhmut, it seems, but at a terrible cost. It reminded me of what Plutarch ascribed to Pyrrhus when he said, _If we win another such battle against the Romans, we will be completely lost_

I can't believe a society can tolerate this level of casualties, and still be okay with it. How can they not know? The apathy is astonishing.
That is what you get after decades of a ruthless dictatorship, a sheep like population.
Oh they know. They just can't do anything about it. Putins war machine rages on,while Russian mothers cry for their dead sons.
Some YT videos address this. Basically, the Russians, particularly those in the cities, have traded their political power for economic comfort, a tradeoff in other totalitarian regimes. Also, it‘s mostly the cities Putin needs to draw support from, so he’s using men from anywhere but.
Putin's been careful to draw troops from rural areas, ones that are even less able to get reliable info about the war than the west. If you look at the ethnicity of the Russian casualties, it speaks volumes about what Putin thinks of everyone not ethnically Russian.
In large groups, humans will behave similarly given the same origins and conditions. So, you can ask yourself how you might be that apathetic (or afraid, or ignorant, or in cognitive dissonance, or in a bit of all such states).
I lost a childhood friend in Bakhmut… he was an incredible person funny kind and always very calm, we went to dance class together when I was a teen. He had a wife and two sons, the younger one he never got to meet, he was only 2 months old when Misha died…I know so many people who have lost relatives or friends there. I cried so much for 3 month straight at the beginning,
I feel more numb now and I hate it. In the beginning it was so important for the world to see what is happening nothing was censored, because there was and still is a feeling of “you need to see their story, you at least need to know what happened and not close your eyes” I’ve seen some horrible things. Things that have changed me forever, the worst was seeing small children, and burned bodies of woman in bucha, just writing this makes my eyes tear up because I can’t ever erase it from my mind.
I’m far away in US, been living here for many years now. Nothing more I want now is for Ukraine to win and stop putin and russians. I want to go there so badly but can’t allow myself because I have a small baby.

A nice sentiment, but hardly realistic.
The town of Bakhmut has become strategically valuable to Ukraine, because the Russian’s fixation on taking the city has reduced the pressure they could have been applying elsewhere. By keeping Russia in play in Bakhmut, Ukraine has been able to build reserve strength and apply proper training and equipment for a vast force of fresh and as yet, uncommitted troops. In contrast, Russian forces are going into combat green, under-equipped, and terrified. They face grim, battle-hardened resistance from highly motivated fighters who are killing seven Russians and wounding more than twenty for every soldier they themselves lose. The tables will soon turn.
Yep. Zelensky’s strategy to deplete Russian forces at Bakhmut so they are weaker during the *rest* of the war is quite reasonable. And what will Russia do when the Western tanks move one?

Yeah, pretty much, in that way it would be catastrophica enough for ruzzkies to make them go away. The ruzzky plan was to have ideally 1:1, so the mobilization potential works for them; at 6 or 7:1, they are getting devastated in terms of population and natality is not great there...

You have to pay attention and learn which sites are highly partisan or sensational and which have more accurate information.
Russia is attempting to repeat Stalingrad tactics of throwing men at the enemy in the 21st Century. The battle was marked by fierce close-quarters combat and direct assaults on civilians in air raids, with the battle epitomizing urban warfare. The Battle of Stalingrad (Soviet Counteroffensive Nov 1942 - 80 years ago) was the deadliest battle to take place during the Second World War. The Soviets quickly encircled an entire German army, over five months of fierce fighting. An estimated 750,000 Soviets died (1,100,000 casualties, and approximately 40,000 civilians died) defending the city, delivering an enormous blow to the seemingly unstoppable German war machine, a psychological turning point of World War II. Modern weapons systems are now far more effective at destroying/killing/injuring especially if applied to at least 7:1 casualty rate fighting that the Ukraines are undertaking and if 97% of the Russian army is now committed to Ukraine, it doesn't look good for Russia who are already on the backfoot and in defensive mode. Best advice ever - Mutiny and don't sacrifice yourself on foreign soil - All Russians go home to their families now.
Russia won't lose 750k to 1 million as its people will realise they took decades to recover of the 1940s actions.
Well, Winter destroyed the german army, the lack of supplies destroyed the german army, the bad planning of 3 simultaneous assaults destroyed the german army, the soviets were just there to pick up the pieces... in fact the miracle of the soviet production was so good that 1/3 of all equipment they used during the war was american!!

If Russia insists on fighting attritional battles, Ukraine has to say yes at some location. Bakhmut is just valuable enough for Russia that they keep at it -- it is a crossroads where the roadways could help supply future attacks northwards. It is good ground to defend for Ukraine -- with hills to the west, they can grind down attacking Russian forces with mortars and artillery before they can get near Ukrainian trench line. Moving the defensive line back 10 or 20 or 30 miles does not help Ukraine, but only makes the situation more complicated to manage.

Glory to Ukraine !!!
Really?😂
I am a very long term study of WW II and military action in general. SO, I have two main comments to make here: (1) General Jack Keane's comment about being 'amazed' at how the Russian were throwing people at the front like fodder. But he either has never studied military history world wide of even WW II, but this is exactly how the Russians have operated ALWAYS! In addition in having no regard for human lives, they have also always committed atrocities, so this is not new for them either. The fact that individual solders have performed a lot of these atrocities tells you that the Russian (the general populace) code of ethics in general is VERY low, and has always been so. In most wars they have been in, all the way back to AT LEAST WW I, they have committed similar atrocities. To give the readers here an example of feeding people as fodder, the Russians (Soviets) had 100,000 soldiers killed in the attack on Berlin in April 1945, which was just 30 days! The entire US loss in WW II for the duration of the entire Pacific war (3 2/3 years) cost the US 100,000, and a lot of that was the result of MacArthur's ego.
(2) The General stated that in Jan 2023 the US suggested to the Ukrainians to pull out, but this CLEARLY is a complete lack of understand bu the 'advisors' as to what war is really about. If anything these US advisors were considering ONLY the tactical issue, and nothing of the purpose of the war, and the Ukrainians resisting. So, the supposed advisors should all be fired because they have no real sense of what is going on. The Ukrainians are fighting for their existence, for their 'homeland'. If they just pulled out and let the Russians in, this would just happen again at some other place. Standing tight and fighting with resolve is definitely the right position to take. We (the US) should have given them a lot more support (weapons as well as other materiale) right from the beginning.
As another history buff, I also didn't think we were doing enough as soon as it became clear that Ukraine was capable of putting up a fight. And these advisors are indeed useless, and nobody should be surprised by Russia's disregard for human life. Bakhmut is also a major crossroads, and that gives it at least a little bit of strategic and operational importance by default in terrain where mechanized movement off-road is difficult-to-impossible due to mud for a significant portion of the year.

The problem is that most Afghans are illiterate, anti modern, Islamic fundamentalists. What they have is what they wanted.
Problem is culture and history. Ukrainians wanted to be a country and gained independence from USSR in 1990s based on their own interests. Afghans are a warring group of tribes and do not want to be a country with a central government.

I keep hearing the word stalemate. But what I see is Ukraine wisely preparing the battlefield for their next battle. They know exactly what they are doing in Bakmut. Wagner is done. There is no artillery ammo. The 122mm howitzers (Russian) have been withdraws due to no ammo. Bakmut (and environs) has consumed all Russian resources, hundreds of tanks, masses of airborne troops and Naval Infantry. Do not listen to either UAF MOD or RAF MOD claims. Listen to the Russian bloggers, intercepted phone calls and look at the videos of piles of Russian dead vehicles, tanks and stacks of coffins and massive graveyards. UAF rotates troops while the Russian Army in Bakmut is a one way ticket.
