Mostly just lots of time. Sit at bench and clean. Tiny wire wheels on dremmel drill, paper towels with screw driver, wd40. When it is finally clean then I clean with rubbing alcohol and give a final cleaning with wax/grease remover before painting.
Why didn't you freeze the bearing with a can of duster turned upside down to shrink it. It'll drop right in. Or I would have put the bearing in by itself and then pushed in the gear.
