Tangaras were definitely way ahead of its time, and state of the art. It was roomy, well-lit, air conditioned, had working doors, it was convenient to go from carriage to carriage. Had the chance to catch one in 1991 and back then the red rattlers were still in operation. It's just amusing to see such a state of the art train operating the network and that something as ancient as the red rattlers were still operating and back then most of the tracks were still on wooden sleepers.
MY GOD I feel so old! - celebrating 40 years of using Sydney Trains in 2020. I remember when the Tangara was first introduced to the North Shore. The train started and due to the additional power in the bogies and the driver gunning the throttle, it immediately tripped the Werona St Substation. So we had a 30 min wait for the techos. The Tangara went about 2 feet that day.
Hard to believe that Sydney Trains’ iconic Tangara T Sets have now been in service for 30 years, and naturally it has seen them go through several changes and refreshes, all as part of keeping them going. I was only born a couple of years after they entered service, and the fact I was also born around a year before the G Sets’ introduction, meant that I have pretty much grown up with this train. I’m certain the next round of upgrades are only going to keep them running, at least another 20 years. Can’t wait to see the revamped T106 and T72 when they come out.
Such a shame our state governments stopped using our local train manufacturers with Victoria being the exception. The Tangara was well head of its time with such a futuristic design. The new Sydney trains dont look as good or as sleek going with a more rounded face, they could have at least kept the panoramic window design from the Tangara. I remember riding on one back in 1990, when my family first moved to Richmond, I got my first look at a Tangara in person at South Windsor station.
Between 2000-2007. I wouldn't get on any other train apart from Tangara round the city circle via Town Hall or other Sydney Suburban lines back in the days when I used to go with my grandfather on the train.
Same when I lived on the Western Line between 2002-2012. Although I disliked them greatly back then, I always try and catch one (or ten) everytime I go to Sydney.
9:04 Apparently a number of design elements from this concept were actually later utilised for more recently built trains on Sydney’s suburban train network and even the orange front ring design was actually used for the most recently introduced metropolitan train model on Sydney’s network which was being rolled out this year! So I guess the design concepts were so ahead of their time to the point that previously unused design elements from the original Tangara design concepts were later used in newer train models 15-30 years into the future! :)
Main thing I hate about the Tangra's. Between the carriages, the squeaking nose they have always made, from day one. Why didn't they fix up the squeaky noise, when the fleet went through, the Refurbishment, from the old back to the, safety yellow, "which looks 100% better" Why Didn't they do, something about that bloody squeaky noise back then. Anyone know why, that noise has never been fixed.
I wonder if it is the Buffers below the walkway? I think they had a design that the walkways slid on a central platform like the older K trains did. Unfortunatly the doors arew so thin that they do not stop the sound. The Milleniums have a fixed buffer, ie they connect like leggo so they don't move, and they don't seem to squeak so badly if at all.. I travel in the Illawarra and theres a place near St Peters I think it is, where the track bounces the trains for 100m or so and you feel / hear as if the carriages are headbutting eachother.
@@stumpypetros2685 it's scary when the carriages "headbutt" each other... Scary as heck! I was on a Tangara, and we just departed Redfern towards Central, then we went over a weird track (twice) and I was going into the next carriage then they cars headbutted each other... Even with the inter-carriage door still open.
kaits23 T106 and T72 underwent testing for their new features over the weekend, and hopefully when they’ve succeeded, they should be given the green light to go back into regular service. UGL Unipart will then start working on upgrading all the other Tangara sets with 2 or 3 sets worked on at a time.
i like the old first tangara's where the front carriage was like black instead of yellow which all of them are now what ever happened to the old one's . i wanna go in the old one again
Wow 30 years in service that is a long time its amazing how long they have been with state rail, city rail and Sydney trains and happy 30th anniversary to all of owl Tangaras and by the way sweet vlog
NSW Transport Vlogs It’s just going a bit slower, but hopefully that it will pay off better. Maybe we might hear of another update on the TTU project soon.
Is this a pubilc exhibition? Many of the design choices for those models are definitely a product of their times. All very TNG. I'm glad that they chose the design they did. It's amazing that the winning design hasn't aged all that bad, even though it kind screams 80s Volvo (apart from the weak roofs, but I really love the wrap-around windows). I noticed that the second last(?) model is very Millennium/Waratah-esq, is this a co-incidence?
I reckon the Tangara is probably the best looking train on the Sydney network. The angular design still looks very modern, though I think the panoramic windows were a pretty poor decision because of the sun glare entering the train for much of the day.
Jonathan Nicholson I can definitely see what you mean. The design was very unique at the time and hasn’t aged as badly to the point you could easily mistake the Tangara for something that wasn’t from the end of the 1980’s, especially when you consider State Rail’s marketing campaign back then basically labelled Tangara as the “21st century starts today”.
Ashley Williams So far, we still haven’t heard anything on T106’s process in the Tangara Technology Upgrade project, but I heard she might be finished by the end of the year, so hopefully she’ll be back in service soon with the taste of the new features.
TGs Train Clips Yeah yeah thats right I do remember now there was an issue with them. One was just mental. Cant open any windows = I'm dying.. But also, the Motors may have been too powerful for some on the subastations - see my other comment so maybe they turned the air con down to reduce AMPS. I think thats why the Blue Mountains trains don't have air con now? Can anyone confirm?
I would really liked to have seen some pictures or video of the Tangara when it was first commissioned in its original livery. I know there are other videos of this (including th-cam.com/video/RedipkkC2rc/w-d-xo.html).
You can see a B set during the day between Clyde and Auburn stations, if travelling east look on the left side of the train and vice versa. Tonight's B set schedule for anyone interested: Granville to Campbelltown (7:34 to 8:26) Campbelltown to Sydenham (8:57 to 9:50) Sydenham to Macarthur (9:53 to 10:59) Macarthur to Sydenham (11:07 to 12:21) Sydenham to Campbelltown (12:28 to 1:24) Campbelltown to Sydenham (1:34 to 2:21) Sydenham to Campbelltown (2:27 to 3:10) Campbelltown to Granville (3:12 to 3:44) The B set will not stop at any station anytrip.com.au/map
Click on the B set and it'll show the schedule for it, if you scroll to the bottom of the schedule it will show the schedule that it will continue on, the schedule above is for just one B set.
Lurong C That will be fixed very soon, as they’re receiving a new round of overhauls which will include new controls, CCTV cameras, internal passenger information displays, redesigned vestibules, and of course, new LED destination indicators on the front.

These will be going for at least another 20 years, crazy to think there will be a 50th birthday for these trains
That's happening in June for the V sets!
wish they actually sold die cast train models would definitely keep as a souvenier for locals or for tourists

Late 1980s wow I didn’t know the Tangara train was that old.
No, black, charcoal and silver with the livery of the time (State Rail red/orange, City Rail blue/yellow, etc.)
Design ways I feel the tangara is ahead of its time
Wow nice. It was lovely seeing tangars last time I was in Sydney totally forgot they were turning 30 this year.

Wow, 30 years already?! Time flies.
Very comprehensive Phil. Well done ;-)
i like the old first tangara's where the front carriage was like black instead of yellow which all of them are now what ever happened to the old one's . i wanna go in the old one again
3:38 that’s some fancy tie
lol
My favorite train. Rode on it to city. Very bumpy.
Andrei Playz Typical gangway thumps. Hopefully the upcoming upgrades install new gangways, as T65 is already showing.
The A33 design looks similar to the 207 series train in Japan
The 207 series does, But it entered service 20 yrs before the Waratahs did
Tangaras actuly replaced red rattlers and that’s why there is so many tangaras
Wow 30 years in service that is a long time its amazing how long they have been with state rail, city rail and Sydney trains and happy 30th anniversary to all of owl Tangaras and by the way sweet vlog
Noice, Will it still go under Technology Upgrade?
Because T106 is at Aurburn
NSW Transport Vlogs It’s just going a bit slower, but hopefully that it will pay off better. Maybe we might hear of another update on the TTU project soon.
Great video!! :)
I was at that museum too! Nice!
What was the museum where those Tangara models are?
Oh, it was the NSW Railway Museum at Thirlmere. Website: www.nswrailmuseum.com.au.
Ditto!

Ditto means "Me to!"
saw B3 in auburn the other day
When is your next meet and greet
Is this a pubilc exhibition?

Its pretty much same age as Adelaide released new train of 3000-3100 series that started in 1988 with Diesel-Electric motor unit.
Any updates on the upgrade
