    Wow what a wild ride! I can’t imagine the anxiety having a broken propeller would cause… good on for pushing forward! Great video:)

    OK, I have to give it to you. I have watched a lot of sailing videos. I have seen many near disaster episodes. I think yours tops the list in the "Guess what happed to us" episodes. I am so glad you all came out on top!

      It was a wild ride. Finger's crossed we won't need to use the engine to get to the haul out. Thanks for the comment, guys! We miss you, too!

    That’s quite the episode!
    I can’t even imagine what it was like or how you were feeling while sailing in the pitch black of night in that kind of storm. All part of the great adventure!!
    It seems like all the repairs are coming together and glad to hear everyone is doing well.
    Be sure to update us on the stowaway bird. Did you determine what species it is?

      We only saw the sea state when the lightening was striking around us, and what we saw was terrifying. Huge confused waves crashing around all over the place. We were getting waves over the bow and being slammed from the side. We were healing so much water was almost up to the side of the cockpit, and we have a center cockpit. It was nuts! It happened so fast as well. Before we knew it, we were in the storm and all we could do was to hold tight. Good times! The repairs are coming along, and we're securing parts. It's a slow process, but it will all be repaired before we know it and we'll be setting sail for Panama. We now think the bird may be a sparrow. He's growing up and is always hungry, lol. Thanks for the comment!

    Holy crap guys, glad you are ok. In the last month, every boat that has arrived here has a traumatized captain. You guys made it, that’s what counts. And did the last little bird survive¿

      Thanks for your comment. It is the season to get hammered on the ocean! He's still alive and doing better now! Sakura made a bigger home for him and painted it.

    Do you have the "Predict Wind" app?

    • @sailingdiscoverypassage
      @sailingdiscoverypassage  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We use both Predict Wind, Windy, Zoom Earth, Weather Bug as well as local weather. We also bounce around the different forecasts such as ECMWF, GFS, and ICON. But we lean more towards ECMWF. With Windy, we check rain, wind, waves, current and CAPE; however, we find that CAPE is like reading tea leaves in a cup...

    Full house in many ways. Hunters . Catalina's etc are not considered,or designed as heavy weather boats, as you have experienced.
    My guess on your strut breaking, as a 40 year sailor and owner of a blue water sailing boat. Either there is misalignment of the engine, or the shaft . Creating a wobble to the shaft, then snapping the strut. Or a wave snapping it, because of weakness. I would suggest checking your engine mounts, alignment before going back out to open water. . But I'm sure you are all done as the pictures indicate.

      Yes, we think it must have been on the way out and weakened and the bar crossing or the storm finished it off. We'll get a new one and start with a fresh strut. I'll also check the propellor for true and replace it if it's bent. Will definitely get it aligned once it's all installed. Good times!
