  • So, 2020 happened... Need I say more? Here's the final video to my series of vids related to my language plan for 2020. So much has changed! And I am here for it! It's OK if we don't stick to our language goals - especially when life is as crazy as this year has been. Here's a language update, future plans, and very big news.

Oh my god a person who works 10-7! Finally a video featuring someone with the same mentally draining work schedule who doesn't have 24 hours a day to dedicate to language learning. This is honestly so refreshing because by the time I punch out, cook dinner, exercise, and do the dishes, it's 9PM, I'm mentally and physically drained from the day, and I get a good 1-2 hours of Korean study *barely*. I always feel so behind comparing myself to people with a lot more structurable time.. I am really trying to maximize my time this year and keep my big study binges for weekends when I have the extra energy to spare.

    -get more advance in Japanese
-find great Japanese friends to practice with
    -learn all basic French
    -try out Arabic and Chinese
I did get good Japanese friends and my Japanese level did get better.

The pandemic made it a big problem for balancing time. Working from home is very difficult and I used to go to classes where that’s where I did schools and go home and relax and learn. Now that my classes are in my personal room and space. I procrastinate a lot more and get behind and my studies with school overlap with language learning. It’s a rough time in 2020. I was able to learn some but I can’t wait til classes and places are opened

    • @ashleyfoss4718

All my classes for my bachelors were online and I just graduated in October. The pandemic didn't change a lot in terms of my daily life. I'm realizing that maybe when I start my masters in January, I should set up an area of the house (like the basement) where I work on school work, and then come up stairs and work on language learning as if I was in a different space entirely. I don't know if it will work, but I struggle big time with procrastination and lack of mental energy.

The biggest thing I've learned from making yearly goals is that goals can change drastically over the course of a year haha. So even though every year I technically "fail" to achieve 100% of my goals, I still enjoy setting yearly goals because it's also really interesting to look back on what your past self really wanted to achieve. For the sake of actually achieving goals, though, I agree that setting goals in shorter periods is much more attainable.

I'm still a newbie language learner compared to you and still finding my feet with it, so I was really relieved to hear you say about habits over goals. I feel like so many polyglots push having a concrete goal and I've just never really jibed with that. My end goal is complete fluency, but I'd rather enjoy the journey to get there than beat myself up for not reaching X goal in however many months and make myself feel like a failure if I don't get there. I don't see how that's supposed to be encouraging, I'd rather feel like I'm chipping away at it through daily habits and keep my passion alive.

I've really surprised myself on my own language learning goals this year. I was studying Korean for fun for a few years, but since moving to Korea, I've only felt really pressured to learn it (by both myself and others), and it's really turned me off to learning it. I've since taken a break from it. In that time, I've started learning other languages that I'd put on the back burner for one reason or another, and have found my motivation to be MUCH higher with Chinese and ASL. I know I will come back to Korean, because I really do love it, but I had forgotten that fun and joy with learning it. Your channel really makes me feel okay with the ups and downs of language learning and I really appreciate that 🥰

Instead, I have fallen in love with Italian all over again and have made a ton of progress, which was totally unexpected. I am even considering studying for C1 next year.

Love your content as always. As for myself, I'm starting to slowly dig out the parasite that I call doubt from my body and I actively started to speak more Russian with my wife. I'm very much self-deprecating but I decided to change it for the better. Heck, I'm even considering doing a review series for different Russian TH-cam educators on what kind of content, resources, and experience they offer. Something else that helped me was writing down what I achieved in regards to language learning and looked at my progress daily. It was somewhat like game, like "leveling up" if I had to use a phrase for it. So, that's my comment. Happy language learning to all, and stay safe!

the whole habits over goals is such a great mindset! I noticed it myself as well, I had much smaller goals than u. But I found it hard to stick to it when it's a goal - smth so far off in the future "read a whole book in German", and things were working out much nicer when I had enough time and energy for reading a few pages twice a week. I had a much better feeling about the whole thing even thought I wasnt moving along faster with the book.
also your point about time not equaling mental energy. thats so true, ive been working from home since march and i feel like i get done less than i would have last year around this time. even tho i finish work at 6-7 (much later than i would at the office), i dont have energy to sit down to do a german lesson/read. the only thing that i kept is watching tv shows in german on netflix (at least smth)

I also started to learn Swedish this year and found myself spending more time on Swedish rather than Spanish. It's so tough to manage time when you have so many passions and interests. 😭

This is so true ! Thanks for your input on this. You need a goal and tranform it into habits then enhance the habits every time you need to. That is the only way to make all of it works.

This year I decided to take Japanese more seriously, I studied it daily for 1 hour since 1st January 2020. I'm proud to say that I have improved a lot and I am currently doing N3😁
I also started learning Brazilian Portuguese on 24th July 2020 and it's going well, but idk why I'm learning it anyway.
I also decided to start learning Korean *again* on 19th August. My Korean is going pretty well and I'm glad!
But since September I guess, it's so exhausting to study, it's my last year of highschool anyway so I'm quite busy. Also I never feel like studying from September-December😩😂
    Anyways-

Your comments about how the people you interact with affect your learning are so true. I realise now how lucky I was when I started learning Spanish to find my Spanish community really quickly - a small class of people around my age who all went to a bar after class to keep practising, a conversation club in a bar every week etc. With Italian I just haven’t found that same kind of connection with anyone and I really haven’t learned in the same way

I totally agree with U , especially when you said we should focus on habits and systems instead of the goal itself (sorry for my English, I'm learning it) One of my 2021 goals is learning French so I'll divide my study plan in 3 months as you said. Thank U a million for this video😍

I think 5 is time where things change. It is the number of languages that once exceeded, it is a lot easier to forget one by learning another one. I am at five now as well and I am finding new ways to learn. Like flashcards. I never used them before and I hated them but once you wanna go past five languages, you gots to do what you gots to do haha. May I ask which five you speak?

I loved this video so much! I really agree with the input from friends, as this year I have finally started learning a couple languages with one of my friends, allowing me to more quickly learn. Also, I am currently planning out my next year, and was wondering if you could show how you plan out everything. This quadrant system sounds interesting. No pressure, I understand that if you don't want to make a video on it, you don't have to. Love you!

You're right about how people in one's life affect the language learning process. I chose Arabic because of the interesting people I've met with ties to the language, besides it being a personal challenge. And I'm happy that you met someone who makes you blush so much, it's been a while since I've seen anyone genuinely have that look you had when you spoke about him. All the best!

Thank you Lindie! :) Please do update us with your Tagalog lessons!

In the middle of the pandemic, and after hitting rock bottom in some areas, I finally decided to return to French, after a six year hiatus. The experience of immersing myself in language learning has been a refreshing opportunity to forget briefly about the stress in my life. People like you have given me the inspiration to pursue this journey. One of my key takeaways of your videos is that I should cherish the journey of language learning, perhaps far more than the destination. The fact that my French shows, series and news outlets are still there, regardless of what happens in the world, is a true blessing in the middle of this pandemic.

Congratulations on your boyfriend! I rang in 2020 with my wife's family in South Korea, and decided to make learning Korean a focus this year. I was anticipating a grand 2020 as an "annus mirabilis." You're right: the pandemic messed with everybody's plans. Working from home drained energy from language studies. I ended up spending more time (re-)learning Spanish than studying Korean. Other hobbies (Toastmasters, bicycling) took time away from language studies. Etc., etc. Thank you for the lessons. I will apply them to my language studies, and life.
