    DAN: Trees are the most dangerous to be under when lightning hits... I know that is counter-intuitive but it is true... We lost a number of people recently to lightening strikes... The take-away to all of us was learning that trees are dangerous in lightning storms because they attract the strike. None of us knew that before these deaths. All of those killed had taken refuge under trees.

    There really is a learning curve to living abroad. When I first came to Thailand I was spending about 3k a month, mostly because I was living my best life living like a rockstar. After about 3-4 months of living the rockstar life I focused on my budget and over the next few months I was able to cut that in half. So that’s $1,500, and with paying the expenses of my gf too. I never really saw a need to go to the outdoor markets because I eat mostly whole foods which are pretty affordable in Big C. My girlfriend sticks with a Thai diet which is also very cheap. If you move abroad just beware that there may be a pretty steep learning curve and budget accordingly.
    One more thing to note, and I’m not bashing Thai ladies at all but if you get a Thai girlfriend they will try to get you to spend every dime on them. This is because no matter what you tell them you are rich compared to them and their experience is that foreigners don’t stick around. Again I’m not mentioning this in a derogatory way. I went through about a handful of girlfriends that despite agreeing to my budget would always push it to the limit. When you get a new gf they will always ask you why you broke up, because they don’t want to make the same mistakes. So every subsequent gf was better and better at sticking to the budget.
    One last tip I would give is what I wish I would’ve known about is the size of protection for your jimmy, it’s Thai size, this goes for many places outside the US. So if you know what I’m talking about you’ll want to forget packing clothes or anything else and bring a nice stockpile. You can buy all the clothes you need in Thailand for $100-$200. If you want to be safe and pay for testing like me before you do anything the cost adds up.
    Just imagine how many guys realize in the moment that the large protection they bought isn’t big enough and do the deed anyway.
    I apologize if this isn’t the type of channel for this but this is an important topic.

    • @solo741
      @solo741 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jonhay75 eh, it depends if she likes her job. Most make between 10-15k baht a month working 6, 10 hour days, so it’s pretty difficult for someone to be happy slaving away like that. A $1,500 a month budget isn’t a high price to pay for the happiness of two people. Plus you have to plan any activities around work and forget about any traveling. The important thing for me is that she’s smart and understands that money is better spent on experiences than shoes and purses.

    I think you represented Samui well! A person can experience Samui very affordably but also can be quite expensive in places, resorts and tours.

  • @OSOMHealth
    @OSOMHealth ปีที่แล้ว +10

    A few things you forgot to mention. The retirement visa costs you money to procure, and one of the requirements is that you provide 50,000 baht per month in income and money in a Thai bank. At 36 USD per baht, you would need to prove a $1,388 monthly income to get the retirement visa. I lived in Samui for 5 years, and the biggest headache is always getting the visa in order.

    • @VagabondAwake
      @VagabondAwake  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Two other ways. One, deposit $26k USD in a Thai bank so you don't have to show any income. Some people that can't deposit $ or show income. The just do visa runs every 60 days or so. You could also move the the Philippines in live for 36 months on tourist visa extentions.

    • @OSOMHealth
      @OSOMHealth ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@VagabondAwake there are quite a few visa agencies that show the bank money for you. They charge extra for that service. I pay 25,000 baht per year for my agency to put the money up and get me the retirement visa. They also go to immigration every 90 days to report for me and get the new 90 day extension.

      Hi Nickie, before you applied for the retirement visa in order to live in Thailand, did you open the bank account in a Thai bank in the US or did you travel to Thailand on a tourist visa and do everything there? I'm asking because I'm not sure about the order in which it's done. Thank you

    Excellent video as always Dan, thank you. For those interested in insurance and retirement Visa costs, my top tier insurance will be Pacific Cross Ultimate at $210 USD. I estimate retirement Visa at $100 a month. Since I am 1 person I reduce the food budget a little and increase transportation. My total for the month will be $1100 to $1200. I give myself $300 per month for travel so final total is $1500 per month. I don't drink. Make sure you get an apartment close to restaurants and markets as it reduces transportation costs. I don't ride motorbikes. I hope this helps.

I lived there recently for three years and once my retirement visa was in order (there’s ways and means) and I hooked up to paying the local national insurance for med I had no prob. My personal take was to avoid getting a long time girlfriend and I never bothered with a car but bought a good gravel bike from the local Decathlon. Happy days.

    I love these budgets, but the real question is what are you paying per month for expat medical insurance. Most comprehensive plans are as much as this whole budget per month.
    Its all good and fun until you get seriously ill and you and up with a 120K medical bill because you were hospitalized for a few weeks without proper insurance.

    • @VagabondAwake
      @VagabondAwake  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question Shawn, That varies greatly based on age and other factors. I have one report where I explain what I do about health care and another where I show you how I search for health insurance.
      What I do about health care: vagabondbuddha.com/two-biggest-risks-of-retiring-early-overseas/
      Report where I search for health insurance: vagabondbuddha.com/best-health-insurance-for-ex-pats-in-philippines/
      By the way, once you search for health care you will start seeing more offers for health insurance and travelers insurance when you are online. Health insurance is one of the most dynamic or changing industries in the travel world because so many people around the world are deciding to live or retire outside their home country. So do a search every year before you renew to make sure you have the best available for your personal circumstances because new ones come out every few months. Thanks for asking so I could answer this for many people! Dan

    They have automated water stations if you're willing to pick it up. Around 10 baht for 20 litres. 80 litres a month for under $2.00.
    Lots of savings can be made around the country. AIS internet charges me around $8 per month. Great service as well.
    You can approach the fishing boats as they come in early morning. They are more than happy to sell to you before they head off to the markets.
    The places in Samui where it's quiet is where you pick up cheap food or just about anything.

  • @Dana-ie2bh
    @Dana-ie2bh ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's cheaper than it was 40 years ago and way more options and convenience. I don't know why, maybe it was just the time of year, but even being right on the beach it was extremely hot and humid, real jungle. Like you said Dan, you need A/C there, but that's not too expensive especially in condo's where you can get the government rate and usually the use of a pool. I liked it there a lot more than Phuket. I felt a good vibe there.
    I was in my early thirties when I first lived in Thailand and I made my home base in Pattaya, and for most people older than that, I would recommend that they spend a few months first in Jomtien to acclimate a bit to Thailand and take exploratory trips to other parts of Thailand from there.
    If you are from the states, I think you can still get a six-month visa before you go and probably a three-month extension after that.

    Heya Dan, are you in KS now? KS is my island paradise. Always loved it there. I've done three detox's there at Spa Samui. It's just north of Lamai, last I went there, assuming they're still open. Highly, highly recommended. Even if you don't do a full detox, their drinks (the Orange one and the Green one) are the most fantastic drinks I've had, like in my life. Personally, I stayed in Chewang, near the StarBucks and Lamai on the beach in bungalows. When I was there it was 650 baht/night for the bungalow, but that was around a decade ago so the price may have gone up. Just such a wonderful time there. Believe me when I say that I really mean to be respectful, but what you're doing is absolutely beautiful and very helpful and insightful. Awesome job. The only issue I have is the fact that you use your wife as a selling point. She's very nice and beautiful and you both are very nice people. I am sure of that but when you watch your videos with your younger kids and the lady, your wife in this case is wearing those very tight. Bikinis makes people feel uncomfortable. I hope you don't take it the wrong way

    To be honest any budget under $1,000 U.S. dollars a month is tight and unrealistic unless the U.S. dollar continues to gain strength which I doubt it. I think $2,000 to $4,000 U.S. dollars range is more realistic to have comfortable and enjoyable lifestyles

    • @VagabondAwake

      Great question Joseph Larsson, I have one report where I explain what I do about health care and another where I show you how I search for health insurance.
Dan

    I appreciate the time and effort you put into this video so thank you. One question for me is…can you explain your transportation cost of $20? When arriving on day 1 you pay almost half of that getting to your lodging. A scooter rental per day, if lucky, might run you 250 baht($7.00). Not sure how you can only spend $20 a month for transportation in Koh Samui.

There were charter buses to just go to the border, exit, and immediately reenter , then return. We chose to go on a Angkor Wat tour instead. What are the tourist or retirement visa rules these days?
