In the case of myelomeningocele, a portion of the spinal cord and the protective covering called the meninges protrude through an opening in the baby's back, often forming a sac. This condition can lead to a range of physical and neurological impairments, depending on the location and severity of the defect.
Individuals born with myelomeningocele may experience varying degrees of paralysis, bowel and bladder dysfunction, orthopedic problems, and sensory deficits below the level of the defect.
Treatment typically involves surgical closure of the spinal opening soon after birth to prevent infection and further damage to the exposed spinal cord.
