Sunflare charges a comfortable life for two architects-turned-explorers who left the UK and headed up to Norway. They totally refurbished this decommissioned lifeboat to take advantage of the majestic views of the fjords and cliffs of the Arctic Circle. By adding 900 watts of solar, two batteries and a small wind turbine they thought they’d experience the joys of self-sufficiency. By the end of the trip they felt a deeper sense of what they could handle as they managed the environs, maintained their boat, sustained themselves from the fruits of the sea.

This thing seems really slow, but growing up and taking our vacations on our sailboat, this thing is about sailboat speed, but with a lot more space inside. I would add a wind turbine generator to it for free wind power, beyond the free solar power, combined that would make this an affordable option to get far away from others and be a base for some really cool adventures.

Any videos of where you have been rather than interviews about the high tech kit you’ve fitted?

Hi WW, We are the manufacturer of the solar panels. The guys who re-purposed the boat can be found at artic-lifeboat.com

Would you please share specifications. Type of motor and where to buy. Do you have videos of installing the motor? Ive heard that those walkable panels were not very efficient. Comments? Where did you cruise the arctic (map) and how did you get the boat there?

      Hi Lea,
For questions on the build of the boat, please go to www.arctic-lifeboat.com.
As the manufacturer of the solar panels, I can say yes, the nominal efficiency is lower (in other words panel is "called" a 300 watt panel). But then what is important is how the panel performs in all kinds of conditions. Sunflare panels convert 10% more power in low light, like dusk and dawn, and on cloudy days VS traditional panels. Sunflare panels produce more power in the highest heat of the day.
Then there is the shading issue--Sunflare has bypass diodes at every cell. That means if shade covers just one cell that's the only cell that turns off. On a traditional panel, there is usually one bypass diode per string or every two strings. That means one cell can be shaded and a large portion of the panel is shut down.
So it comes down to buying the right panel for your particular use. If you don't want to lose the real estate on the top of your boat--if you want to still be able to sit up there etc, Sunflare is a good option.
We are a fan of all solar. We want all solar companies to succeed, because our company goal is to help reduce CO2. So the more types of solar out there, the better. It's just a matter of finding the right panels for whatever your application demands.

@@RafaelHabegger 3:17 He said "engine starter battery". I think they're still using the original engine. I'm also curious to know what it is.

The boat is powered by the original 3-cylinder Lister Petter diesel engine. It also has 900 watts of solar power and two 12v battery systems.
One battery system is for the engine starter and cruising, navigations, and winches. It’s 165 amp hours. The other battery is the domestic bank, is three 220aH Victron AGM batteries
For a total of 660 amp hours. The domestic bank handles the refrigerator, the composting toilet, the toaster, the kettle, the power tools, and their lap tops all day long.

You might want to ask the architects, Guylee Simmonds and David Schnabel. They are the guys on this amazing adventure. They are from the UK. Check out their website artic-lifeboat.com

    • @EvanVanderStoep

You are correct, the power is only for The appliances, pumps, lights .ect while the engine is most likely ran off diesel. Most lifeboats are diesel!

    WATER MAKER?

    • @SunflareSolar
      @SunflareSolar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I asked the boat makers, they said, "No we do not have a watermaker, we carry 500l in two tanks which is enough for around a month on the go." For more info on the boat: arctic-lifeboat.com
