One of the best concerts I ever saw was REO sharing a bill with Rainbow in 1978. The lead guitarist, Gary Richrath, was a beast on those 6 strings and remains one of my biggest influences when it comes to playing leads. May he rest in peace.

It was that opening synthesiser line that sold me on this song.
Surprisingly it didn't even break into the top 100 when it was released.
It had a slow burning fuse up the charts even though many of us think it defines the sound of this band.
Kind of like Dream On by Aerosmith which also took forever to make a dent in the music charts.

    • @jimbeam7160

Aerosmith had a lot of songs like that. Their earliest stuff was available on the double album "bootleg" edition, that came out in the early 80's. One song, "Mother Popcorn" goes back to their roots-beginning when they worked out of a little van with nothing in their pockets.

1976, I was 16 years old. Mid South Coliseum in Memphis, TN...Wet Willie, Golden Earring, and REO Speedwagon. It was sponsored by an AM station, 56 WHBQ. It was a "special pricing" concert and the tickets were only $1.56 each! My seat was 3rd row, directly in front of Gary. I saw a few concerts before and many more after that, but watching Gary play was one of the most memorable concert experiences I ever had. Listening to "You Get What You Play For" very closely emulates that experience. They were such a fantastic live band.

I’ll admit I was never a big REO fan. My girlfriend in high school liked them so of course I had to take the counter position, just to be annoying. Maybe it’s why we broke up. Anyways I’ve never seen REO live although this is the second video I’ve seen of REO on this channel. What strikes me immediately: they are or were a really “clean” band live. They sound almost like they’re in the studio playing live. Their guitarist, while being no Randy Rhoads, plays great live and the singer is excellent too. I saw Journey during the Escape tour - one of the best shows I’ve seen - and Journey was like that live as well.
