Worst Jacket I Ever Bought: Patagonia Review

  • This jacket is so bad I had to make a video about it. I don't do product reviews, but this one really amazed me. Patagonia is a "woke" company. They've made some great products in the past. They are sustainable, inclusive, antiracist, and they embrace diversity. What did I think about the Women's Houdini Jacket? Please watch and share.

Don’t buy the wrong jacket for your needs then rant on about how much you hate it. Simple fix: call Patagonia’s customer service line, wait less than five minutes, and tell them the style number on the inside label, if they can find it they’ll then tell you what current model is the best match. They sell several windbreakers so one is bound to work. They would’ve taken about 5X less than the time to make this “review”

same. it's meant to be compact and super lightweight. i bet his old jacket is great, but weighs 4 times a much and packs 4 times as big. and did he run or do anything in it or just go by what it felt like in his hand? I'd say he should try a different patagonia jacket before writing them off... although they are very woke lmao

This jacket is absolutely legendary. It's a staple in the arsenal of countless hikers, bikers, runners (and more). People have literally used this jacket to walk across the United States. It's designed for high output activities, where you generate a lot of body warmth, while providing a bit of reprieve from the elements.
It isn't light because it was made "from scraps," it's light because it was designed to be, and it's a lot more durable than you might think. If you read the product's page you'd know that.
Ironically, this review is a great promotional video for the Houdini. It's also quite funny. Next time you buy something, you should probably read a bit about it. But more importantly, next time you review something, you should DEFINITELY read a bit about it.

I understand why you dislike the jacket, but basically you ordered a jacket meant for running. Anything thicker would be too heavy and hot and every other review I've watched says this is one of the best light rainshells for running out there. It's a benefit that its so light and small and that it packs into its own pocket. It's also a snap judgement to assume that because its made in Vietnam that its of poor quality. Patagonia takes their manufacturing partners very seriously and if they catch any sign of poor quality or poor ethics, they stop working with that facility.

Alright, I can't tell if this video is supposed to be aggravating on purpose. You act as if this is the only thing Patagonia makes and they're somehow obligated to make specifically you happy. You read into a lot of things about the company as if you're looking for a bone to pick with them. They make heavier jackets. If you didn't want an ultralight jacket you shouldn't have bought one. Customer service can fix your purchase mistake but they can't fix your grumpy attitude.

Hahaha. “Back in the day when real men rode horses they made real jackets out of durable materials like duck canvas. Now that’s a jacket. And it only cost $1.” It’s like he rode a time machine to the future and missed everything that’s happened with technical outerwear in the last 50 years including cost inflation of materials, labor, etc. Perhaps try a different jacket of 100+ jackets that Patagonia makes. I’m sure there is at least one that meets your needs. Fact that he chooses to point out Patagonia’s social and environmental policies as “woke” says a lot. They woke up about 30 years ago. And now they make clothes out of hemp too. They must be a bunch pot smoking hippies down there in Ventura.

That jacket can save your life if you are caught out in a chilly rain storm. It’s designed to be so light that you will always bring it along. It’s a wind breaker effectively, that can resist light rain. Couple that with a light insulating shirt and you have decent protection on a hike, climb, mtn bike ride, or run. 😊

Its meant as a superportable backup/ emergency jacket for short periods of heavy wind/ drizzle. Bought is as a running jacket, but it is useless for that with non-existent breathability. Found BD Alpine start much better for that use. Better permability and resistance than even the Air-variant, at the expense of little larger pack size. Also heard OR Ferrosi is good if looking for breathable thin outer layer

I feel sorry for you, but you bought the wrong jacket's. I use this for 4+ years on my mornings run (12miles), in case of possible light rain showers or a lot of expected wind.
Why is this jacket so great ? Because its light and flimsy and easy to pack into pockets of my running shorts. I also use the Houdini jackets as a fallback protection in summer vacations or on my way to work.
This is not jacket, which should be worn regularly during rainy days or bad weather.
You posted the video on YT, but you did not use YT to inform yourself about your purchase. I bought it for 50$ on sale !

  • @TheDisillusioned1811

The jacket is great for throwing into your expedition/wilderness/trail running kit for summer ONLY, but for colder temps this jacket is not sufficient to keep you warm and dry in a rainstorm or wet misty environment, it clings to your skin. The jacket should not be relied upon in the shoulder seasons or if the temps could drop below 50 degrees and you are out in the woods. For running down the streets or trails near civilization it is okay because safety is everyhwere.

I mean...you went out and bought the wrong jacket for your needs...but I bought the Houdini Jacket after seeing your review and it's the best purchase I've made in the last year.
Firstly, you are correct, it's so incredibly lightweight that it almost feels l like you're not wearing a jacket.
Second, it essentially blocks out ALL the wind. It's so good at blocking any wind, it also traps all my body heat. So for someone like me who runs fairly hot, this has been the perfect jacket for taking walks in 43-degree weather up to very blustery 50-degree weather with only a t-shirt or polo shirt underneath.
The only drawback is if you're moving a lot, and if you naturally run hot, it can trap all your sweat and give a "clammy" feeling if the weather rises past 50 degrees (for me at least) and doubles as a running jacket.

This is the worst review I've ever seen. Who buys a super light windshell and then complains when they receive a super light windshell. The Houdini is a classic and has been used by mountaineers in incredibly challenging conditions (Steve House and Colin Haley regularly use it as their only shell). It blocks wind and does a great job of keeping off rain. I hope this doesn't put anyone off buying it. Sir, something like the nano air would be more what you're after.

It’s technical equipment for athletes.

This is one of the bestvultralight high output jackets made. It just sounds like it is not suitable for your needs. Patagonia is one of the best companies in the world from service to business practices. Hopefully you stick with them.

You didn’t do your research and you’re pissed because you didn’t get what you expected.
A simple TH-cam search would have saved you the trouble. Also how do you unknowingly order 2 jackets ? Did you not notice the $200 price at check out ? It’s not like they bill you upon delivery like you suggested in the video.

For a guy that takes the time to film a review of a jacket he hates, but he can’t take the time to check out reviews of what he’s buying. What a plonker.

Patagonia saving the world. Making a 100 dollar jacket out of junk. Brilliant.

Man doesn’t know what he is buying and then complains that it doesn’t do what a different jacket did over a decade ago.
Also, didn’t bother to read about it or test it and ‘somehow’ ordered two of them. 😂😂😂

Best jacket ever!! Just got one and I love it. Perfect to stow away!! Blame yourself for getting the wrong jacket. It’s your fault, not Patagonia 😂

Patagonia is a little expensive and I don't like their super liberal politics, but there is nothing wrong with minimizing waste when it can make sense. As for the material, you bought a jacket that is categorized as ultralight. That means very, very lightweight and not very bulky. That is by design. Because of that, it will be less durable than a jacket you should have bought from them. Compared to cheap jackets that weigh about the same, it is actually very durable. That's part of the reason why it is so expensive. Sure, the material won't last like thick canvas, but it will last a very long time compared to cheaper very thin materials. Long story short, it seems like you did no research on what it is you were buying and don't understand the purpose of the design. That's on you, not the company.

Ha ha, all points you state are positives, welcome to 2022, where recycled, thin, lightweight garnments can be better than the 2 kilo jackets you were used to back in the days
