    So many fighters would have held on for dear life or got stopped in that 12th round .. The fact that Ike just stood his ground and shot it out and was the fresher one by the end of the exchange was legendary. It’s a shame inactivity due to his promoter kind of made his career simmer away

    Gold rated classic. Very rare for anyone to remember this one. Quartey showed heart and why he belonged. To bad he wasnt very well known. Delahoya in his prime was crisp, very few mistakes.

      Ricky Garcia : I agree. Quartey had him beaten. I still think Quartey should have gotten the decision, especially when you compare his performance to that of Tito Trinidad. Quartey was a more difficult physical matchup for De La Hoya. Trinidad gave him more strategic problems.
      But that last round made the decision for De La Hoya at least “justifiable.”

    This is the toughest fight Dela hoya ever faced in his career. When interviewed he said, I couldn't walk for two weeks after fighting this guy and was asked whether there should be a rematch and he said no. On the scorecard ike was leading until the 12th round Dela hoya realised that something must be done. That's why he fought his life in the last round which eventually changed the results. But most pundits had this fight draw.

      Reminds me how great Ike was. Holy shit, what a fighter. Took every body shot from Oscar and never even once backed up or even winced in pain. He literally exposed and gave up his ribcage for Oscar to punch all nite long and kept going after Oscar's head. Ike looked like a BEAST this fight.

    Ike was a great fighter not many know about. 37-4, 31 KOs, never got knocked out, & his losses were to Oscar, Winky Wright, Vernon Forest, & Fernando Vargas who are all hall of fame level fighters. Oscar was such a stud to take on as many tough guys like Quartey as he did.

      Oscar just couldn't really all the top fighters in their prime. Most of titles came from older on the way out the door fighters and they robbed a few fighters and gave the fight to Oscar.

      Yes, Oscar, was the real thing. In some ways a throw back. Some comments on here infer he avoided some? My memory is that he fought so many, top level fighters and he always came to fight! When he lost he accepted it and was humble. I’m glad he has developed into a top promoter.
      One guy here, commented about women’s cloths? Who gives a flying xxxk? Let’s stick a camera on every aspect of your life son and see what we find! Oscar was a great competitor, great boxer. Always good to watch.

    De La Hoya was almost CONSTANTLY underestimated by his opponents because he was almost NEVER the "physical specimen" in the ring. What Oscar had was the technical proclivity to throw his punches with absolute precision and perfection.

    That was a hell of a fight. If it wasn’t for that last knock down, Quartey would have won that fight in my opinion. However, Oscar never back down to no opponent. One of the greatest Mexican fighters

    This fight was Leonard-Hearns 1 with Ike Q being THH who was giving SRL a boxing lesson and at Angelo Dundee's admonishment Ray came back and landed the money shot to stop Hearns. Oscar had Quartey out on his feet and pulled out a miracle win.

    The fight should have been stopped in the 12th. Great fight. Oscar is one of my favorites. Never ducked anyone. Underrated skills. Tremendous left hook and a great jab. Head movement was underrated. One of the great chins of his generation. Great fighter.

    I know ODLH is a legendary fighter, but got damn was he fast in his younger years. I never really watched him during his earlier years, 1st fight i saw was against JCC which was your prototype for the "Passing of the Torch" ceremony between fighters. Knew he was very very talented, but am amazed at his hand speed.

      He was really fast up to like 2001. Even how he bounces off his toes. Its crazy how different he looks here compared to when he fought Mosley 2 in 2003. Slower hands and flat footed. He probably shoulda retired after that fight.
