The way you told the story was horrifying. This was how I felt when I played the game. Lisa was abused so severely that any stimuli reminds her of her abuser. And she tried every trick in the book to get help or find release, but nothing changed. Lisa found a new escape, one that her brother and her friend couldn’t give her.
She’s also responsible for making Buzzo such a prick in the future and making him commit atrocities like SPOILERS Cutting off Rando’s face and harassing brad by torturing him. Even the creator himself said LISA is the worst character in the entire games.
Interesting rundown of an underrated game, though I never really understood the push that Lisa herself was an awful person, considering that she was a child acting out on trauma and torturous abuse that started when she was a literal infant. Her relationship with her friend clearly became twisted and unhealthy by the end, but I can't bring myself to see her as anything but a victim of the entire situation, desperately searching for some form of escape that never came to her in life.
What's really great about this story is how you see people react differently to the character's actions based on inferred information. I didn't explicitly say that Lisa was an "awful" person, but that she was "not a good" person. At no point in the series does the game explicitly state Lisa's age, though it's a valid assumption and easy to feel more weight from the events when you paint that context on your own. I understand not wanting to victim blame, and this is simply my own interpretation, but I see the message of the game as "judge people on their actions, not their intentions", and unfortunately, there are no saints in the main cast.
Oh hello there! My name is Nern. I'm considered the greatest historian of our time... I've gathered a wealth of knowledge about Olathe and what happened here. Many tales... Would you like to hear? Hmm... I wish you were more enthusiastic... Oh well, I'll tell you anyway. Let's see.... Oh right! It all started with what I like to call, THE FLASH. I was sitting with my wife, god rest her soul, sipping on sweet lemon tea. I believe it was homemade by my sweet wife, God rest her soul. Or wait... Maybe she bought it from the store in a bottle. You know, like a plastic bottle? Well hold on now, that would be ridiculous to buy a bottle of sweet lemon tea, then transfer the contents into a glass. Why not just drink it from the bottle? I guess maybe so she could put ice in the glass? But then again, making tea homemade would be just as time consuming, if not more! That sneaky bitch... Anyway, I'll save that story for later! So, I'm sitting on my porch drinking sweet lemon tea. From a glass of course, ho ho! When suddenly... A great strangeness fills my body... Something was wrong... I've lived many years, and I've never felt something like this before. Do you know what it was? Yup! It was my rocking chair! That wooden son of a gun stopped rocking! So I looked down and realized a little rock had gotten caught beneath my chair! A rock under my rocking chair! What a day! I decided it was time for bed, I had had a little bit too much excitement for one day! Hoho! I slid into my jammies, brushed my teeth, and said my prayers. As I was climbing into bed I noticed my wife, God rest her soul, brushing her hair in the bathroom. As I peered across the hall my body swelled up with emotion... "Why can't I be married to an attractive woman?" "Is it me?" "My bank account?" I'm a tall guy, I workout forty minutes a week... Is that not enough? Now my neighbor at the time, Tom Forknight, was very short. His wife, Karen Forknight-Plateburger... Yeah, one of THOSE women. Well, she was more attractive than my wife. I'd say she was a soft six, whereas my wife was a hard four. What's the deal? I thought women liked tall men? Why was Karen with him? Anyway my horse of a wife, God rest her soul, crawled into bed next to me. She decided to leave the bedside light on so she could read her book. It was one of her romance novels again... Give me a break... As if I don't already feel inadequate enough... Not only do I have to compete with Tom, now I have to deal with these fictional hunks! Ay yai yai! At this point I had already suppressed the urges of intimacy, I rolled over and tried to sleep. Her bedside light was only of minor annoyance. I was able to drift off... Then I woke up to a big flash of light. That's about it. I can tell by the way you're walking away that you don't want to leave... If you really want to hear another story I'll tell you. Once upon a hot summer night. Sometime in July... Was it July? My local grocery store sells really good eggs in July. I don't know why. Do chickens operate better in heat? Fireworks maybe? I don't know. I don't want to get off topic. Point is, the eggs that Summer were marvelous! Anyway, my wife and I, God rest her soul, went to a BBQ that night. It was held at Dale Spooner's house. Well, his backyard... Conny Spooner doesn't want people in her home, I think she's just an uptight bitch. So at this BBQ I see none other than... That's right, Tom Forknight... Now earlier in the day wife, God rest her soul, had made potato salad for the BBQ. Personally I hate potato salad, I'm a mashed kind of fellow. Hoho! So I sat in the TV room avoiding her till the BBQ. Once we were at the party, I made sure to distance myself from my dumb potato bitch wife. God rest her soul, I just didn't want anyone to think I would associate with someone that would bring a potato salad! Anyway, Tom and his above mediocre wife were already there. And get this, they brought a fruit salad! With whipped cream! The nerve of those Forknights! Needless to say I gave my wife, God rest her soul, a couple choice words About whipped cream! Versus potato salad! God dammit! Son of a bitch! A real tongue lashing! Geez, you're kind of smothering me. I'll talk to you later.

This is really well made! Good work! I love how you gave just the right amount of information to nudge people to try it themselves without spoiling anything major. Video essays like this are not easy to make especially without leaving things out but this was really good! Respect that you shed light on my favorite underrated life ruining experience. You should play the DLC: The Joyful if you haven't already.
The most fucked up part is, you see Lisa's corpse on the TITLE SCREEN. Like the only thing you're technically supposed to know about the game is dead in front of your eyes, and the game essentially says "have fun." But unlike TLOU2 that says "we don't use the word 'fun' around here." LTP says "Hey watch this homeless man kill a yakuza boss by running into him with a shopping cart."
Video games have always been art, LISA is just another reminder of that. Art is a gradient, some art is good and some art sucks, but its all still art.
Lisa is my favorite game so I'm glad more and more people are recommending it. tbf to tlou2 it has good intentions, i don't agree that the lack of choices makes the "feel bad" moments feel cheap cuz look at spec ops the line or hotline miami. Like lisa it isn't trying to be subtle with its intentions or themes, they're both very in your face, where they differ is in execution and yeah Lisa is just on a whole other level of storytelling edit: good vid btw!
Good stuff! Any thoughts on the fangames at all? I didn't expect much out of Pointless and Hopeful just because they were freeware, but they both knocked my socks off!
I made the same comparison when I first heard about Lisa The Painful. Both are stories where a man wants a second chance by raising a little girl to make up for the failure to save a different little girl, both girls end up resenting their fathers and going on bloody quests for revenge. And while Last of Us was good, Last of Us Part 2 was a very messy failure of a revenge story. But Lisa really gets it right, the one thing LUP2 got wrong: the characters. Everyone is almost equally terrible in Lisa. Non of them are the good guy, but they all see their actions as justified and have trauma to back up their twisted logic. Buzzo finally gets a joy monster version of Brad he can do whatever he wants with, but it's only then he finally realizes that none of this is going to bring Lisa back, which is the only thing he really wanted. And even if it could, he probably wouldn't want her back because she wasn't the perfect angel he chose to remember her as. The moral doesn't end up being "revenge bad", but more like "revenge is pointless" because it's not going to fix the trauma you went through, it's not going to make anything better, it's only going to make you feel worse and drive you to do bad things.
Me being someone who is very connected to The Last of Us community, and loves the shit out of Lisa, I thought this video would be incredibly hard for me to sit through. Personally I never was a fan of the first game myself, but I knew people enjoy the game quite a bit, so I never considered it bad, just a slower version of Uncharted with more of a focus on a grounded in reality narrative. However, with the release of TLOU 2, that all changed. I found out that my sister would be the face model of the secondary protagonist in the game, my sister who is one of the nicest people I know, was sent massive hate, and around the time of the release it was overbearing. Anytime I saw someone criticizing the game it hit me in a place that very few things have. It felt like my own sister was being called the very reason why their most anticipated game turned out to not be what they wanted it to be. (some people still make it sound that way) That being said, thank you for calling attention to one of my favorite games, even if it took taking a jab at one game I have a very personal relationship with!
Thank you for taking the time to reach out. I do genuinely feel bad for the individuals who put their love and effort into a game they care about, and yet get sent horrible messages because a game was disappointing, despite most of those flaws really not being in their control. All of the actors, all the devs forced to crunch, they really do not deserve all the hatred. I do want to apologize if it feels like I was making a low blow to something I know a lot of people feel strongly about. I'm not actually that particularly invested in TLOU, but the point of comparison in narrative themes was there and it was topical at the time. I hope you'll believe that it really was just an effort to bring attention to a game series that needs more love. That's why i spend as little time possible addressing it towards the beginning.
@@JakeVidya I truly appreciate the kind words, and I want to apologize myself for not really wording my comment the best, I didn't mean for it to come across like I was insinuating you were doing something wrong, I definitely felt that you didn't mean any harm. Austin took inspiration of Fist of the North Star to create LISA too. Something that I think is needed to add in this review. But still you did it great!👍
The fact that you have under 1K subscribers is criminal. You should have at LEAST 10k for the level of effort and analysis you put into this. Subscribed a while ago, but this video popped up again on my home page bc of the algorithm, and I felt like leaving a comment. Also: while it seems like you and I had different levels of enjoyment from LOU2 (I enjoyed a lot of it, but saw a good deal of missed potential in its execution), you read my mind and I thought the exact same thing. When I finished LOU2, I was like "LISA: The Painful did this better" All of this is to say: Wonderful video, sir. Wish you the best if you continue to make content :D
Thank you for the kind words. They always mean a lot to me, even if I get the sentiment "wow, you should have more subs" a little too much lol. I'm fully aware that it's because I dont upload very frequently, and that's fine to me, as long as videos like this one, where I really put my heart and soul into it get noticed. Though it doesn't always happen as well as I'd like (check out my mass effect 2 video for instance). I'll still keep making stuff as long as I am able and motivated to do so, but since I'm completely on my own, I only ask that everyone who is anticipating my stuff to please be patient. Still it's nice to know that the website is still pushing this year-old video out to people, it's hard for me to really get accurate data on that stuff.
Not me thinking it was supposed to/ going to be one of those pixelated rpg's that are like omori or witches house or ib (Or if you know this one, Toilet in wonderland-)
One of the best reviews I've seen for this game! I do heavily disagree with your point about Lisa herself though. While obviously she is the source of much of the trauma present in The Painful, she never really had the agency to decide how to be. Her actions that you could argue are selfish were all done out of desperation after years of putting up with the abuse and having seemingly no end in sight. And although they inflicted their own form of trauma on those around her, her intention was never to cause pain or share her own, they were just the only possible chances to escape, or at least mitigate the damage, in her eyes. I don't think you can call her a good, bad, or even morally grey person when she was robbed of any and all choice in the matter.
thanks! I hope so too. I'm seeing a lot of growth on this video even months after it's release, so for my standards, I just hope this keeps up with it and future projects
I love your review/analysis of LISA: The Painful. Kinda wished it was a standalone analysis and not included The Last of Us 2 comparison or atleast just made it into and quick concise comparison just focusing on the main points. It felt more LISA analysis heavy than comparison wherein the differences are compared and contrasted althroughout the video. Just my personal opinion, thank you for the video it was great overall consider me subscribed!
Hey Jake, fantastic video! Glad to see people still talk about LISA. It's still one of my favorite games, and it's nice to see new vids on it from time to time. Great editing btw!
When the game says on the store page it’s a Life Ruining Experience it’s not fucking lying, believe me I know. Also this game is miles better than TLOU2 cause you call the shots on what happens in the story. Choices matter most for an emotional story
I knew it when I saw NitroRad coming up and I know it now watching your stuff man, you're gonna make it on TH-cam if you keep putting vids out like this. Give me a shoutout once you shoot past my sub count huh?
Fantastic video man, glad this underrated game is getting more love. If you ever decide to check out the fan games, Hopeful and Pointless are definitely amazing mods that could be their own games themselves. Hopeful has great characters, story and multiple endings (one even changes paths you go in the game!). Pointless is a lot harder, items are scarce, new status effects, sp management, and the crows are one time saves. The bond and between the two main characters and the harsh world definitely sell it though as their moves synergies with each other. There’s also LISA: the Painful desolate mod which expands the original game, rebalances all party members to be good, new areas, combat changes, new party members and a lot more. Note that Pointless also has a fanmade expansion mod but I recommend you play the original pointless first. Either way, hope you get to checking them out sometime if you ever get another LISA itch! Would love to hear your thoughts.
Love the video man. I think your channel is underrated, kinda like the game. It kind of sucks that more people play the latest, shitty maden game as opposed to this genuine masterpiece
I was looking for Lisa shitposts, and I found this instead. And I'm not disappointed, it's a really good video! Even if I'm not really a fan orator feeling scripts (for lack of a better term)
hard not to give a good recommend for this game without some spoilers, but you did a pretty good job. For real people, if you haven't played this game...get on it. It's not even expensive and it's one of the best games you can play for the writing. It also has a kickass soundtrack.
Lisa The Painful's story parallels a lot with The Last of Us 1 - which is why it's quite crazy that I felt more for Lisa's characters than a AAA game's Also No black jokes please (this game is fucking hilarious - funniest game I've ever played)
@@JakeVidya Oh, already did so! knew abput it thanks to a top of Creepy games, altough it saddened me that it was so short and both endings were so easy and anticlimatic.
I like both games. Lisa more than TLOU2, but they’re totally different genre of game. Basically what I’m saying is TLOU2 never stood a chance against LISA. There’s no competition.
Both tlou 1 and 2 don’t take advantage that they are games. They are just movies with generic third person shooter gameplay in between the scenes. Granted the first game I guess the player grew to like Ellie along with Joel and I didn’t think tlou 2 was that bad but I can’t deny the pacing fucking sucked
5 years ago Dingaling said lisa is the worst and buddy is his least favorite. Untill 1 week ago. That he mrntioned again that tweet and it said its about the charecter creation and it could do better than that.

Not me thinking it was supposed to/ going to be one of those pixelated rpg's that are like omori or witches house or ib (Or if you know this one, Toilet in wonderland-)
wow this video is very good, and very well edited
Glad you think so!
Brad is the monster TLOU2 thinks Joel is.
i think you should've mentioned that theres an sequel
great video tho
Great Video! the Lisa part made me uncomfortable, in a good way! Glad somebody is still talking about this game
This is such a eloquent, fantastic take.
I hope you get more exposure man.
Minecraft, ASMR, Pewdiepie, Fortnite
Based comment, don't forget make-up tutorial
@@JakeVidya Man, people like you make TH-cam less stinky
always happy to see lisa getting praise. love that game so hard and umch
Really surprised that this video isn't more popular and your channel isn't bigger. Pretty neat video man, I hope more people see this.
thanks! I hope so too. I'm seeing a lot of growth on this video even months after it's release, so for my standards, I just hope this keeps up with it and future projects
Ahh, this time is the best time to be a LISA fan
One of the most underrated channels
I love your review/analysis of LISA: The Painful. Kinda wished it was a standalone analysis and not included The Last of Us 2 comparison or atleast just made it into and quick concise comparison just focusing on the main points. It felt more LISA analysis heavy than comparison wherein the differences are compared and contrasted althroughout the video.
Just my personal opinion, thank you for the video it was great overall consider me subscribed!
I’ve played this game three times (pain mode third time) and the ending hurt every time. 😔 I was a crying mess after Joyful too.
One of the best videos I have ever seen! You are very talented dude! Keep it up!
Hey Jake, fantastic video! Glad to see people still talk about LISA. It's still one of my favorite games, and it's nice to see new vids on it from time to time. Great editing btw!
Thank you, I worked very hard on it
This video made me play the game again thank you
Very top notch video! Glad I found this in my suggestions while I was browsing through some old lisa videos
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, I worked very hard on it.
Give me a shoutout once you shoot past my sub count huh?
thanks, my dude. I hope I can get there one day.
I've seen the lev punch meme template except it was Brad punching Marty without any arms, while Buddy watches. Truly a spectacle to behold.
dude i cant believe you only have 429 subscribers ? ?? ? ?? i couldve sworn youd have a hundred thousand at least
If only. Make the change you want to see in the world. Tell a friend, share on socials, etc., it's all I could ever ask.
@@JakeVidya alright, time to whip out my 100k spare accounts
That was a DAMN good review. You put in a lot of emotion in your words. Your voiceover made it much better.
6:01 this made me laugh for like 3 minutes
Love the video man. I think your channel is underrated, kinda like the game. It kind of sucks that more people play the latest, shitty maden game as opposed to this genuine masterpiece
Relax, your making me feel sad. :(
I was looking for Lisa shitposts, and I found this instead. And I'm not disappointed, it's a really good video! Even if I'm not really a fan orator feeling scripts (for lack of a better term)
What's the music at 3:50 ??
Hey don’t know if you still care but the song is from the Lisa the Joyful OST called Mouth Wide Open: m.th-cam.com/video/2ZVIjUQ4yRk/w-d-xo.html
LISA is the best life ruining experience I've ever had
fantastic video! You should definitely get more views!
Pretty damn good video, surprised you don't have more subscribers.
Thank you, I seem to get that a lot.
Incidentally, wasn't one of the original ideas for TLOU that the shrooms only affected women?
Great now I can't read brads text without hearing heavys voice
The fact that these games are coming to consoles makes me so happy
I know things are not that simple, but all would work out if Lisa had runned away from home, would be alive and free
subbed before the actual video for Isaac strangling Felix lmao
Oh look another popular TH-camr is going over LISA.
*looks at sub count*
Oh, *OH*
Haha, yeah, if only...
nice channel bruv. yeah the lisa games are fucking amazing.
Great video!
Thanks!
That lisa bit felt different
2:19 do you remember the part where buzzo forces brad to take joy ?
hard not to give a good recommend for this game without some spoilers, but you did a pretty good job. For real people, if you haven't played this game...get on it. It's not even expensive and it's one of the best games you can play for the writing. It also has a kickass soundtrack.
This game trully surpasses tlou, underrated
Something I need to remember.
Idk I really liked both games
Have you ever played Lisa fangames before?
I have not but I do plan on getting through them sometime. I've heard nothing but good things.
yes Lisa is the best with It story telling.
I recently finished it and it was great
Hey, wait a minute... The footage from right before the final series of battles has Brad with both ar- HOW COULD YOU.
0:00 thanks doc
spot-on man.
Lisa The Painful's story parallels a lot with The Last of Us 1 - which is why it's quite crazy that I felt more for Lisa's characters than a AAA game's
Also
No black jokes please (this game is fucking hilarious - funniest game I've ever played)
it feels almost unfair to compare that guy from last of us 2 to *TERRY FUCKING HINTZ*
Too late 💀💀
Lisa is an absolute GOAT game.
Great video👍
Yes, but what do I do if I already played The Painful, Joyful, Hopeful and Pointless, but haven't played The Last of Us 2?
Play OFF
@@JakeVidya Oh, already did so! knew abput it thanks to a top of Creepy games, altough it saddened me that it was so short and both endings were so easy and anticlimatic.
Play Hylics and Omori
@@goldensp3038 That's new, thank you very much for the suggestion!
@@Miguelnumbers Lisa the Pointless Scholar of the Wilbur Sin
WAAAAH!!! WAAAAAHHHH!! ! THEY KILLED EPIC BEARD SHOOTY PROTAGANIST MAN!!! BOYCOTT THIS GAME!!!!!!
0:14 one of my favorites
Also the ending is forced scripted right
I like both games. Lisa more than TLOU2, but they’re totally different genre of game.
Basically what I’m saying is TLOU2 never stood a chance against LISA. There’s no competition.
Brother I don’t have a computer please spoil it all, I will never play this game but it seems interesting
It’s coming to console in a week
You know how to sell a game
Oh good, I'm not the only person that thinks that Lisa tells a very similar story to TLOU2 but like, 100× better.
Would you do a review on the fan games their really good.
how the hell does this vid even have dislikes
Both tlou 1 and 2 don’t take advantage that they are games. They are just movies with generic third person shooter gameplay in between the scenes. Granted the first game I guess the player grew to like Ellie along with Joel and I didn’t think tlou 2 was that bad but I can’t deny the pacing fucking sucked
the last of us part 2 is not the first game and so it was trying to tell a darker story
a comment for the algorithm
wait, how is Lisa the worst character in the series??? You can't just drop that bomb and say nothing to explain it!!
5 years ago Dingaling said lisa is the worst and buddy is his least favorite.
Untill 1 week ago. That he mrntioned again that tweet and it said its about the charecter creation and it could do better than that.
Subbed. LISA is god.

Look at views, make nother Pokémon game, maybe gen 4 is underrated, your Pokémon video was good
Good 14 minutes long video ;)
