Overtaking a cyclist on a busy main road

  • We are driving on a busy main road and catch up with a cyclist. There is a lot of oncoming traffic, so we adopt a following position, a reasonable distance behind the cyclist. We remember that the Highway Code specifies we are to give the cyclist MORE THAN 1.5m of space as we will be overtaking at more than 30mph. This means crossing the centre line.
This is the first time this customer has been able to practice overtaking on faster roads, in the first attempt we did not accelerate sufficiently to overtake safely. We regathered our thoughts and planned for the next opportunity. The second attempt was done well, we were more in the opposite lane than in our lane, giving the cyclist at least 2m of space.

It's pleasing to see that the driver also followed the cyclist at a safe distance, rather than tailgating him, prior to the overtake.
