  • Launched in 2008, the Legend-class Cutter was built by Ingalls Shipbuilding. Currently 9 ships have been commissioned out of a total of 11 planned. With a unit price of up to 735 million USD each, the Legend class is even more expensive than some 5,000-ton destroyers, showing that the US has invested a lot in this vessels. This class can be deployed in homeland security, law enforcement, patrolling, maritime safety, environmental protection, and national defence missions.

For this pricetag i would expect a high end OPV, we operate more high end OPVs at much lower cost. I guess they can't build anything at regular cost in the US, that's why they have bought the Italian frigates.

Well, labour cost & special schemes ....

well there's normally two reasons for the prices Wally one they keep changing the specs and adding duties then the systems chosen won;t work with some of the new ones and more changes have to be made (that doesn't count any mods from miscalculation in the design phases!) and and two the coast guard wants to be the navy and has to have as many of the same toys as possible!! they can't have a pure unarmed search and rescue boat bigger than 50 foot they all have to have fangs as well!

@@dkebun7577 sounds more like scheming than labour cost. We have one of the highest labour costs in Europe due to taxes and a high minimum wage and even we can't make a ship this simple this expensive.

@@keithmoore5306 they should talk to Damen next time they use a simple modular design that makes it possible to use the components to build corvette, OPVs and frigates. Those individual modules can be adapted to each specific customer. If they develop a similar system in the US for patrol vessels it would save them a bundle.

@@jacksonteller1337 honestly if we could get the politicians and their bribe paying contractors out of the mix where they insist their districts get at least some of the work that'd help by an order of magnitude with costs! i've heard that's an automatic 15% increase in cost!
