  • This one has been a long time coming, in more way than one. I've yet to tackle a mage job (Geomancer is a mage but it's more of a support really) on this channel and work has kept me busy lately so this has been delayed getting to air.

    I mention this towards the end of the guide and rather than have to skim through the requests for what the next job should be I'll just pin a thread up top here. The jobs I have mastered and feel as though I know enough to do justice are.

    Feb 2019 update: saboteur now provides its enhancement via a 1 minute duration buff, allowing you to stick all your enfeebles with its bonuses. Recast on saboteur is now 3mins instead of 5.
    I'm enjoying your job guides, even though you might not play some jobs frequently they still serve as a good self-critique.

    Red mage's versatility and jack of all trades status, really makes their subjob choice so open.
    For soloing, my preference is dancer subjob with Red Mage. The dual welding, an esuna ability, instant cast sneak/invisibility and TP based healing, are such a powerful sustainable backup for a Red Mage. You get instant-cast healing with your dance waltzes, and if you want, you can drain HP and MP from your target, supplementing your spells if need be and you pretty much have an endless supply of healing potential for yourself since you now have MP healing and TP healing. Plus if fighting an enemy with MP, you can drain that out of them to power your spells at the same time, while still gathering TP to use as backup

    I remember farming beehives in Gustaberg to make my own echo drops. Also, damn, keeping all party members hasted was such a headache to keep up, but felt good for sure.
    once composure came out, life changed forever. used to cast all buffs on self and then remove it and focus on buffing party members for a whole 7 minutes and then repeat. (haste used to wear off so fast)

    People actually get confused into thinking that RDM's gear for Savage Blade isn't as good as it actually is, while in reality if you are paying attention, it's very solid. I would argue it is more compelling than their CDC options (obviously assuming Sequence). (I'm also not saying CDC RDM is weak, it can be good with enough polish). The WSD 6 Augments on AF and Relic seem weak at first when compared to the jobs that get WSD 10% pieces, but it is offset by having higher STR/MND(especially MND) than their Jhakri counterparts. This makes AF+3 hands slightly better than Jhakri hands due to higher STR/MND, and with Regal Earring paired, a fair bit of accuracy as well. Relic+3 body has higher STR/MND than Jhakri, and the Relic+3 head is significantly ahead of Jhakri.
    Also, many people gearing RDM for DPS often spring for Ternion Dagger +1 as their offhand (Which is honestly quite sensible for CDC), but for those building Savage Blade, Remember that Colada can get STR and WSD on it as well. It seems that it needs to have at least 7 STR and 3 WSD in order to actually pull ahead, but it can go all the way to 15. Just something worth keeping in mind for those that have the stones and don't mind droning out.
    Also there are some that criticize RDM saying that it simply doesn't have melee gear, and in terms of TP sets, it is true that RDM has very bad options, but they often underplay the effects of a 630 Skill Temper II giving them 33 Triple attack indefinitely, as unlike RUN they don't require things like embolden to reach that sort of effect. For getting TP it helps even the odds, and the fact that RDM offers Distract III to the party, it can get away with having a little less accuracy. Savage blade should be mentioned again in this context, as it can benefit from Temper, and while fTP does not transfer across hits, the WSC does, and for this reason, and RDM's excellent savage blade gear, it is not uncommon to see savage blades well in excess of 40k, or even 50k in attack capped situations. This is further aided by the fact that WSD does not affect the subsequent hits, but as I mentioned before, RDM forgoes some of this in favor of more STR/MND, which has a greater effect on those subsequent hits.
    For those that don't mind using Dark Matter, the Chironic Feet are a great candidate for DM WSD augments, I have that on mine. I would advise against aiming for WSD on the legs however, unless you are feeling very lucky, as they require at least 8 WSD to even catch up to Jhakri Legs (Combined STR/MND on Chironic is only 48, while the Jhakri legs have 47 STR alone, then also 26 MND, it takes alot to make up for that gap, but it is technically theoretically possible to get STR or MND and the WSD)

    RDM served me very well to solo the story with Trusts, including all of SoA and the last bosses of Rhapsodies, and it made me understand how both skillchains and magic bursts work, as well as having great sustainability with buffs, debuffs and cures, but I personally found it hard to find a focus with it after I finished the expansions, in terms of what to gear for first and such, and it felt like it was taking me a while for the job to start shining a bit more... so I went full traitor mode and started working on BLU instead. Perhaps not the smartest choice for several reasons, but it's working for me so far as I had a better idea of where to go with it. Your guide now puts in better perspective for me what to do with RDM and where its strengths lie, so I'll probably end up picking it up again at some point. RDM is still my first main job in this game and I feel attached to it. Thank you for your great work on this video.

    If you have telchine gear with Enhancing duration use those pieces besides the feet (use Rdm empy feet’s) when u cast haste/flurry/refresh on yourself for longer buffs and use the whole empy set for casting those spells on party members, Haste on my self is 20+ minutes and on party members is 6+. If you have Af hands +1,2,3, use them over telchine and your empy Gloves

    • @jdavis7993
      @jdavis7993 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And if you have reforge Relic, use it over Telchine. +2 is equal duration with added skill, +3 is higher duration and skill

    Thanks Ruau! This has helped me understand RDM better as someone who doesn't play the job.
    I do have to disagree with you on what spells need to be cast in your Enhancing Skill+ set (as Chris Akin has also pointed out below). I'll paste the cheatsheet I've made for SCH and WHM based on the best info I could find for each spell. It doesn't account for RDM only spells like Phalanx II though.
    Enhancing Spells capped via Lv99 base Enhancing Skill (Duration+ set): Protect, Shell, Haste, Flurry, Adloquium, Animus, Auspice, Storms, Refresh, Regen, Stoneskin, Aquaveil
    Enhancing Spells 500 cap (Skill+/Duration+ mix set): Boost-, Gain-, Barspells, Embrava, Phalanx
    Enhancing Spells with no known cap (max Skill+ set): En-, Temper
    Hope this is useful to someone and saves some research time.

      Raetic Staff is preferable to Grio for nuking. Obviously you would still want Grio for enfeebling skill/m.acc

    I'm still so happy rdm was the first job I picked up when starting the game like 15 years ago. Aloud me to do so much. I'm a little pissed seeing that sword. They should have added that shit way over a decade ago. Rdm was always meant to cast and melee not be stuck in the backline 99% of the time.

    • @Prich319
      @Prich319 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, The one thing I hated the most about rdm in XI was the fact it pretty much became a glorified battery charger beyond lv 50, especially when I went out of my way to get a Hornetneedle and Joyeuse. Main reason I went rdm/dnc and played the job almost exclusively solo. It is my opinion that FFXVI did rdm much better. You get a sword, you get to use the damn sword.

    • @WaterspoutsOfTheDeep
      @WaterspoutsOfTheDeep 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Prich319 I had a kclub about the last year I played the game. So I had a lot of fun with enspells on rdm in abyssea and so on. I felt pretty good when I quit the game like I got to do most of what I wanted and own shit with kclub on a lot of jobs and could dual box and low maned a lot of stuff with friends which made the game fun. Abyssea was actually a really fun end to ffxi, tons of new stuff and unique challenges and ways to go about doing things with atmas and everyone felt kinda OP. Especiallly with a kclub could low man a lot of shit on ninja or thief fast. I did that shit with smn with all that gear with damage reduction for avatar, it would take only like 3% damage or something it was so much fun lol. Actually got to play all those fringe fun jobs like smn and bst and do really well with them. I had a lot of fun soloing with rdm/brd or rdm/bst or rdm/nin before abyssea too. But after abyssea writing was on the wall game was basically dead at least to me. Ya FF14 rdm was cool how they did it, thats what rdm should have been able to be like all along viable on the front line. But FF14 is a shit show lol. It's barely playable for more than a few weeks at any time. Everything is so cookie cutter it's not fun, jobs in the game are so limited everything is so paint by numbers it gets old so fast. Everything is queued with randoms basically in duty finder which is a blessing and a curse because there is never any community in the game or one where it forces you to make friends to accomplish challenges. No one ever needs to be nice they can do everything on their own. So it ends up feeling like FF13 you are more along for the ride than really playing the game. The crafting is amazing in the game, I loved it but the fucking irony is all the items and gil for all intents and purposes is worthless. All gear is largely worthless compared to random shit you can get in two seconds in duty finder. Housing is cool but they did it moronicly. Only so many people can get it then if you do if you don't play for like a month you lose months worth of gil savings and vanity items. I came back when they implemented that system and lots my cool house I worked so hard on, and then on top of it the fucking ticket from npc to get my items back has a time limit too which is beyond moronic its a fucking video game why would the ticket need a time limit so lost all that shit too. That was the final straw. The whole game is basically working for vanity items. There isn't much sense of accomplishment for anything it's all so cookie cutter. Play with randoms, spam your rotation in some set tiny little map and thats it. the overworld is beautiful and cool but ends up being inconsequential. They made it casual to the extreme and it takes away what really felt great when playing ffxi. I know people are in a different mindset nowadays and maybe such a game won't exist again but it felt better despite all it's issues because of the community it forced you to have and accomplishment actually solving challenges and being able to do things your own way, and everything was limited resources. Just like the real world. You focus on what you want the most. You aren't meant to have everything. That made everyone unique in a sense on the game and specialized a reason to ask friends to help you with something. Sorry long rant. Just pissed at where SE went with FF14 it could have been so much more.

    Nice work mate. RDM can be a quite competitive DD especially with the right gear. Savage Blade spam in a Zerg party with good gear and a sequence and you can parse in the top tier. Of course you won’t beat the likes of a good WAR/DRK/SAM, but you won’t be far behind them if your good. You can definitely keep up with a BLU in a capped Pdif party. My wife does it on a regular basis...

      Keep in mind, this isn't trying to measure dick sizes, I don't say this stuff with the intention to make anyone look bad. I just want the information more readily available. I was going to make a reply video, but with the hours I work it (60+ hours a week), I don't have the time. Figure we can just join forces and give the best info possible.
      Phalanx 2 is stronger than 1, 36 dmg reduction at 5/5 merits, but that is at the cost of merits. Generally use Phalanx 1 with accession gives the same effect, not like you cast on tanks anymore anyway.
      Only spells that really need enhancing magic over 500 would be temper 1/2 and enspells. I have a mess of different sets based off the spell, if I am casting on self or party/ally, potency, potency/duration blend. In example, start of the fight I have a duration refresh for party, mid fight I have a blend for potency/duration, and for critical moments I have a max potency for refresh. Really just a personal preference, but saying rdm only needs 2 sets, just doesn't seem right to me. Casting on self vs party/ally alone should be 2 sets, then splitting into potency or duration for each group doubles the amount of sets instantly.
      Merits, I went with Ice and Earth. Addle almost always lands, and if it doesn't a Frazzle will fix that right up, can't think of a time I have had issues with Addle landing and that is casting with sword/dagger most the time.
      Second category, Phalanx 2 is a waste as mentioned above regardless of the minuscule 1 point more damage reduction it has over Phalanx 1.
      However, the tier 2 versions of Slow, Para, Blind, are actually all much stronger than their counter part.
      Bio 3 is a waste.
      I went through the Dev post a while back talking about the enfeeble formula for rdm and actually took the time to find out all the base potency of the tier 1 and teir 2 enfeebles.
      Just 1 point in Blind 2 will actually give you a stronger blind than blind 1.
      Blind 1 = Potency = (1/4)(dINT +80) for dINT > -39; Potency = (1/8)(dINT +120) for dINT

      It's fine, I can take constructive criticism fairly enough. Getting the knowledge out there is the main reason I do this as well.
      If anyone else reading this has watched my video I can recommend this input.

      So you said he had a lot wrong and then agreed with nearly everything he said... right.
      "The myth that rdm is so far behind in dps than other jobs when jobs like sam, blu, drg, mnk, rng, cor, and run all fall short is, in my opinion, only because people don't know how to gear rdm melee correctly."
      RDM is horribly behind all the heavy DD's and well behind the light DD's. This is a result of gear selection putting an artificial ceiling on DPS that no amount of care bear power will overcome, put RDM on Adhemar / Herc and that problem would largely resolve itself.

    • @chris-wg6rw
      @chris-wg6rw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, no saevel. I didn't agree with everything, I started off with talking about how I work 60 hours a week and don't have time to discuss everything. The problem is you have and always will only see what you want and try to nitpick it like a little kid.
      I talked about the incorrect information about phalanx, then the unnecessary need for fire merits, I went through and brought out the explanation of how blind 2 wasn't a waste.
      I also talked about the need for more than 2 enhancing sets, and that 600 skill enhancing is only useful for 2 spells.
      I then broke down merits in category 2 talking about the potency of each and gave everyone the knowledge they need to adjust their merits correctly.
      The I came back about rdm dps with numbers, and validating proof about a video from a guy that ran rdm dps, that doesn't even have my melee sets yet.
      Where is all your validating proof and all your videos of those jobs smashing rdm like you think can be done so easily? I have a great idea saevel, why don't you go get on all those dps jobs and make videos of yourself doing the dps that rdm has been doing. Actually, since you seem to think rdm is such a push over... Go ahead, make some videos of you doing high 5k dps, low 6k dps on drg, mnk, nin, cor, rng. I will wait. Since rdm is doing high 4's low 5's, all those jobs should smash a rdm right? Go ahead, back up your claims for a change.
      Until then, do what you do best, and fade into the background and pretend you didn't just get put in your place.
      The thing you always seem to forget, is buffs can put rdm way over the cap on attack and that levels the playing field for dps jobs across the board, at that point it is a race of tp building. A 38% triple attack, capped magic haste, and 82 store tp job spamming savage blade is pretty hard to beat.
