Yeah that is the WORST!! I am a 16 year old busser girl... I help the waitresses set tables and get drinks.... I hate when they do that or when I am busy and they are busy on there phone and won't tell me what they want to drink.. 5 MINUTES LATER THEY SAY I WANT WATER NO ICE AND 7 LEMON WEDGES
Annoying people exist. Asking for something is fine. Servers only really get annoyed when people ask for more than the average person and then tip less than the average person. There are high maintanence people at my bar. If they tip 20%, IDC if they ask for anything their heart desires. But if theyre high maimtenence and tip 10%, Im gonna remember that, since I have to tip out bussers 4% of everything sold, drink runners 4% of drinks (including refill costs, despite making nothing on them, food runners 5% of food, and bartenders 4% of drinks. If somebody tips less than 10%, I literally lose money by having them. Dont fear asking for things. Just dont go out to eat if you cant tip a server for the best service of your life, because one day youll get it, and people who stiff then are remembered for years).
I once had a panic attack because I felt pressured to have a steak remade because it was overcooked 😂 I was fine with how it was but I had it remade anyways
As a server i have to say there are rude ass people but waving us down or not remembering my name isn't exactly rude i mean i can't remeber every customers name and i sure as hell don't remeber servers names unless i regularly see them every week
TheBobtheturtle lol why would anyone remember their servers name, its weird af to call a waiter by its name lol, and the waiving thing i think its perfectly fine, i think its a way to make the server know that you have already chosen the food or that you want the check. Usually in my country we only waive when we want the check and commonly waiters will know that u are asking for the check so they will automatically go to make the check. Anyway sometimes they take a really long time and literally end up forgetting
Or when you just locked things up and they come pounding at the door, and beg endlessly until they give up, and leave bitching and moaning, or you give in and havr to stay there for two hours until they leave.
xocheerle6 i work at a fast food restaurant so i just tell people “that’s gonna have to be to go :-)” if they come in at about 15 minutes before close lol.
I'm a cashier. Trust me, you're not alone. They do it to us, too, and they'll even show up after the register is closed down. "Hey I'm gonna get this and that and a couple of those." Through the glass: "Sorry, we're closed." "%^%$#$#$%&!!)!!)@(@!!!!" "Okay, have a good night!"
Katie Runyon we just want the nod not a sentence and if you really want to verbally respond then put your hand in front of your mouth like a civilized human being
As someone from England, I will never understand America’s tipping system, it’s sad that people don’t get payed enough so they have to get people who don’t employ them to pay them enough to live comfortably. Here we tip £5 - £10 on average, I think tipping over £100 seems crazy! But then again that’s common in America and I get that the minimum wage is not even enough to live on.
I don’t tip at all in the UK, they never ask for it. Also, why should I? You’re supposed to be paid by your employer, I’m not responsible for your salary. If they have a problem with that, mabye they should get a better job?
On the subject of tipping: They don't tip overseas! The restaurants pay their servers living wages! So if it is a tourist and they don't tip you, cut them some slack! I tip (minimum 20 percent but usually 25 percent) but I hate that the system is being gamed in such a way that the customer ends up helping the server make ends meet instead of the employer just paying a decent wage! Same goes for cab drivers or any other job where "tipping" helps the worker make ends meet!
KatKMeanders I’m in the UK and we definitely do tip over here. Not as much and there’s no rule regarding percentage but in my experience most people tip at least a bit
KatKMeanders people should do more research on where they are going. I feel like some people just don’t care to know how other people’s systems work.🤷🏽♀️
@@francesca1687 where abouts r u from? I'm from Birmingham and ive also been London and Oxford a lot and no requirements for tipping anywhere...especially as much as America where it's like a 20% tip
eseudeo tea Outskirts of Birmingham. And yeah, there’s no real set rules or anything but most people will at least leave a token, more out of social pressure from not looking like a stinge in front of your family/friends xx
I've been a server, and as a customer I am patient if the restaurant is busy, tip very well unless the server is being exceptionally rude, and always try to be nice to them because I know the stress that comes with being a server
We usually are the ones that tip the most. Even when I eat at the restaurant I work at I tip well beyond 20%. I even clean up and pile dishes to ease their job.
You shouldn't. I promise you not all servers are this extreme about their pet peeves. If you're nice to us, I PROMISE you, we will respond with the same amount (if not more) kindness. We LOVE sweet customers. We adore patience. It's perfectly okay to flag us down or raise your hand as we're passing by (at least for me it is) If you need something. It's our job, trust me we don't care.
Don’t feel anxious at all!! All we ask is that you’re polite and respectful. Even if something is wrong please don’t be afraid to let us know. We will always do everything we can to make sure you have a decent experience and as long as you’re polite everything will be fine!!
If you tip well (20%) and try to be polite servers wont mind you. Mainly, order off the menu, don't complain, be quiet, tip well, and leave at an appropriate time (1h 30min). Servers will be happy. If you have a good server, tell the manager. You can ask your server for the manager, or ask another employee. Always preface it with "I'd like to compliment you/my server to the manager. The manager will walk out shortly excited to hear from you. If you have a complaint a manager will begrudging approach you.
Yeah but when they’re practically falling out of their chair, gesticulating and waving with both arms (after just having sat down), it’s a different story
The part that’s gets me is when a guest wave me down and I am not there server,,, or I drop off another servers food and they ask me to get them every thing,, I’m like your server will be right over
My step-brother has Celiac Disease, my family always make sure ahead of time to make sure he has something to eat. Sometimes it sucks but its common sense.
Suuuuuper rude to be upset with someone for having an allergy. Most of the time pizza restaurants will advertise gluten free pizza or say they can accommodate an allergy that they can't.
As a Resturant server, I couldn't agree more. Some people are just so rude it's unbelievable. Like, were you never taught how to act and interact with people appropriately?
I would like to that I am a server and yeah, some people are very unpleasant. But, most people are nice and fun to talk to. Going out to eat is a fun experience and it is absolutely amazing to help make their time even better. It's not all bad and we don't hate it. Hence, why we're servers.
I thought the same exact thing. Now I am one! There's awful people everywhere. The experiences that I have had with some customers are really nice, it's not about just giving a plate some food and not talking to them but making them feel welcomed and have an amazing experience and good conversation. Besides mean people, it's actually really nice to have conversations with people and almost be like a friend. :D
Something I’ll never forget is when I was a server , and when my two costumers sat down in my section I asked them if they needed anything , and the lady goes “oh you don’t have to keep asking me if I need anything I will let you know ok “ and she was so rude about it. I ignored her for the remainder of her stay.
I will never understand the tip culture in the USA.. a restaurant is a service business like many others, good service is literally the job. Consumers shouldn't have to carry the restaurant's owner's responsibility. Restaurants - PAY YOUR WORKERS DECENTLY. Waiters - Start unions and/or demand appropriate legislation. Tips around the rest of the world are earned from an exceptional attention, good service is expected by default. Tipping can be even viewed as disrespectful in some places. The reason why decent wages in this industry are rare is due to workers getting used to the almost forced down tipping system that can lead to crazy sporadic income if the restaurant has a high influx of customers.
It started during the great depression, I believe. Restaurants couldn't afford to pay their waiters so they shifted blame to customers if their waiter went home with barely enough money for essentials like food and clothes. Nowadays waiters and waitresses are allowed to get paid as little as roughly $2/hr (depending on what state) and tips are expected to make up the difference to equal minimum wage. While it is unfair that service workers arent paid enough, and while service workers and employers are trying to fix legislation its not immediate. In the meantime please TIP YOUR SERVERS!
Ok, just as a person with a lot of allergies, we're not trying to be difficult. Most of the time we were dragged to a restaurant with family and we just want to get out of there because we know that you're annoyed at us.
As a server I honestly don't have a problem when people have allergies. I get it, you're gluten intolerant but you like pizza, that's not a crime. It pisses us off when people change around every single aspect of their meal because of some diet trend. If you have an actual medical condition, that's actually pretty refreshing and (good) servers won't get upset at you for that.
I hate it when people with fish allergies come to our sushi restaurant, it's like they have a death wish, or they really want an excuse to sue someone. Trust me no food in an inner city sushi restaurant is more than 1 metre away from fish. We cut the fish in front of customers, we cook it in front of customers, it wheels past customers on the conveyor belt, everyone else at the table will be eating fish - it is not a safe zone!
@tjašikaThen let them get mad. If you don't want to get hit on at WORK then maybe don't WORK at a crowded public place filled with drunk guys specifically looking to hit on women in a job that demands interaction.
MumbaiGlutton ughhhh my dad is always very kind to servers and tips extremely well, but if he needs someone’s attention he snaps and it drives me crazy!!!! Just know that not everyone is trying to be rude :(
My dad does that sometimes at restaurants and I can’t tell you.... HOW EMBARRASSED I GET THAT I LITERALLY TRY TO HIDE MY FACE WHEN THE WAITER COMES BACK 😂😂😬
Daniella Marsam omg I can totally imagine 😂 I get so embarrassed I feel so bad for the waitress !! If I ever need anything I just try to make eye contact with them or if they pass by I say excuse me __etc etc..
i am a waiter myself and i really don't mind. I do think that there is a very big difference between snapping your fingers or just putting your hand up. If someone just puts their hand up because they want to ask me something I find it actually quite helpful because i now know they need something.
I’m just genuinely asking. If not waving, how do you call the servers at the other side of the restaurant without yelling? If I’m ready to order and nobody’s coming to take my order, how else do i call a server?
I think they were talking about people waving excessively at you when you are clearly busy with another table. People with be leaning out of their chairs and waving aggressively at you, or even calling for you when you’re in the middle of speaking to another table. People even grab or tap you, it’s crazy.
I am a server, eye contact or just smiling or a little wave. I think that's totally ok and not mean at all or annoying Edit: also if you have empty cups at the end of the table or menus, etc it's easier to spot when it's busy- i try not to be annoying by asking y'all need water all the time, so I can easily refill and take away plates or check if I can visual see what's up- if not then it's like a guessing game for the servers but good servers can tell when's the right time to ask how's everything doing, more water, check, etc :D
Dude said “you’re lucky” lmao do guys seriously think we enjoy them flirting with us cause I don’t, it bothers me. Like obviously there’s no problem with trying but if they aren’t interested just stop.
In a workplace environment, where there is a power imbalance (such as when a service industry worker is assisting a customer, which is literally the subject of this video/comments), yes it is. Also, "same equivalent" is redundant.
My family is always very nice to servers, my brother always puts all the plates and silverware together and the garbage as well. Sometimes my family gets annoyed with him but he is just making their jobs easier, so yeah. That’s for serving ppl and dealing with their sh*t!!
"Hello! Welcome to (enter restaurant name)! What would you like to order" "...Coke and a sandwich." "Egg,ham, chicken or beef?" "I said i want a sandwich!" ^ I had to deal with this yesterday. The customer was angry cause they thought i ignored them and recommended other food. They didnt even apologize when i explained but instead they just yelled, "Obviously i want ham! As a waitress you should know what a customer wants!'' Like, OH IM SO SORRY THAT I, A PERSON YOU HAVE NEVER MET BEFORE, DIDNT KNOW YOU WANTED HAM.
I've never been a waitress, but I have been a cashier at a McDonald's...near Columbus Circle...during rush hour...with customers that knew little to no English. The flashbacks, yo.
When I worked in a grocery deli people wpuld just point at stuff and get mad I couldnt see it. My general response was "I'm sorry my mind reading powers havent fully developed. Professor X has been to busy fighting crime with the X-Men to train me. " that usually got a laugh and diffused the situation.
My personal favorite happened to me the other day (I’m not a server anymore, but I do work in food) customer: I would like the pico guacamole sandwich me: okay would you like beef or chicken customer: yes
For me my thing is "excuse me miss/m'am?" And some waitresses get so pissed. Like I mean they are bussing and I just want to know where the bathroom is or they haven't been around in a while and I want dessert. I mean that's like a 1 time thing maximum. I swear waitresses hate me for it.
redspirit17 sometimes they get rlly busy ... and don’t worry someone will come round to you .. this one time I was busy and I gave a customer some water and a wine list .. I was busy making drinks then .. they come up to the bar and was like “CAN SOMEONE TAKE MY DRINK ORDER ?!!” I said I’ll be with them in a minute .. they got up again and did the same thing .. customers don’t understand that we r busy sometimes.
I am a server. The worst thing are mean kids, not just impolite I'm talking MEAN. I've had a child throw his mom's glass cup at me. Not a good day at work.
RooFooChoo oh that has to be bad.. But u have to agree the allergy comment was very rude.. I'm allergic to gluten I can't always force my friends to not eat at a certain place because of me.. And I'm not mocking you for not having gluten free... How can u be irritated by a person Asking if u serve gluten free
A B Oh shut up. Why the hell do people complain about other people complaining? That’s so hypocritical! Also, nobody wants to be a waiter as their career, you chose your own career, so if you want to complain, please feel free but don’t put other people down because of it
I always tip at least 20-25% and I know how important it is to tip, but I would MUUUUCH rather restaurants just increased their prices by 20% and paid the servers a reasonable wage.
You don't rralize that the average quality of service would drop because they would still be getting paid the same if they're not nice or smile. Look at a lot of customer service jobs that don't get tips i.e cashiers.
Unfortunatly that's unrealistic. The system has been this way for far to long. You have to factor in food cost and waste pay for cooks, dishwashers, prep cooks, bakers, host, managers etc. Etc. Not everyone would have the same mind set ethier. If a pasta dish that used to cost 13.00 suddenly cost 27.00 (which it would HAVE to increase that much in order to compensate for the now higher wage every server in the restaurant is making) people would be outraged. Resturant would close and be a thing of the past. Paying servers 2.80 an hour is a big part of how restutants stay open
I lived in Europe (Germany) for 3 years and I realize that it seems that literally every other developed country pays their waiters and waitresses enough that they don’t need to be tipped.
Probably my biggest pet peeve as a server is, "We're ready to order!" "ok, awesome! What would you like?" "hmmmm......" *sweating, 2 tables waiting for their checks, 1 needing refills, 1 table needs a ranch, food needing to be ran in the kitchen window, etc.* I have NO problem giving you more time with the menu or answering questions, but DONT tell me you're ready if you're not because I could be doing 50 other things during your "hmmm" time.
Dana and while they’re pondering you go “I can give you some more time, I’ll be right back!” And they’re like “no no we’re ready” and then 10 minutes later you’re finally done
Im a server and I get all of these things except the allergy one, they don’t really have a choice and are usually uncomfortable about having to ask for things specially done and I’m usually really sweet to them because I feel bad about it
My mom has celiac disease, so I also try to accommodate people with allergies as much as I can. What I can't stand though, is when we have a big wedding reception going on (200+) and a guest comes up to me while we're already serving their party to tell me: "So... I am allergic to X... could you get me something different?" If they ask as soon as they read the menu when they arrive? Great. I'll get the kitchen on that immediately. Half an hour before dinner will be served? Okay, talking to the chef right now. But when we're already serving? And you expect me to magically conjure up food for you right this moment out of a busy, bustling kitchen trying to get the planned menu out as fast as possible? No. That just doesn't work. I'm always happy to help if they are willing to wait, if they forgot to ask before we started serving but I get seriously annoyed when they just expect me to randomly get food matching their specific needs out of thin air, stat.
But vegan Pizza and Glutten free pizza is a thing, the only way to find out who serves it is to ask. Tbh I’d ask before I sat down but like, still worth finding out.
I think they are referring to people who say they have allergies to food, but obviously don't. I had a customer who swore he was allergic to onions. Deathly allergic. He then asks for salsa. I tell him there are o ions in it. He says, that he can eat them in salsa, but not on a burger....ummm, dude you're not allergic lol
Yeah my family always tips but when they say we give "bad tips" it makes me feel bad cause we're poor and going out to dinner is a special occasion so we honestly don't have enough to give a "good tip." We do what we can but its sad to know that the servers think badly of us for not giving a lot
If you have a special occasion but don’t want to tip a server, then order catering and stay home. It sucks but as a server, I depend on others for my income. That server is probably working their butt off to make sure your family has a good time, and to say you “honestly don’t have enough” to give a good tip is nonsense. If you can afford to eat at that nice restaurant, then you can afford to tip your server.
Robin Trevor they didn't say they don't tip they leave a tip but not as much as desired. They can go out for special occasions, that's rude af to tell the, they shouldn't come out😐
@@JTmaxx you can tell his remark had good intentions behind it. However as a woman, unwelcome and persistent interest can feel threatening very quickly. We are used to “watching our backs” so to speak. Whereas men aren’t in many cases. So the idea of someone flirting with you on the job probably is nice for a guy
Wait so how do you get a waiter to you if you don't wave or make a sound? I mean I always try through eye contact but it's difficult when you have a waiter who avoids eye contact
Mariah Jones I don’t get why people think “waving” their hand is necessary when you can just... I dont know... leave your hand up and be still? Servers are not blind...
Kathryn McCallum I agree with you so much. They may think it is really rude , but I kinda feel like it isn’t? You are just signing that you need a waiter. Maybe you need something fast? Do they think that just sitting there is going to help? Like no.
@@kaylamwalker1 it also isn’t that simple either, you don’t know what it’s like to be quadruple sat on a Saturday night do you? Having a party of 10, a 4 top, and 3 2 tops? I want you to go in on a busy night and eat one time at a popular restaurant and take some time to actually observe the servers and see how many things they are expected to do at once. All of y’all think it’s all about you and y’all are the only ones that matter when I got about a total of 20-25 other people I’m waiting on as well, and little things add up, “oh I don’t like this I want it off my bill.” “Can I get some more ketchup?” “Can I get a refill?” “I never got__ is it coming soon?” “It’s my sons birthday today and I have a cake so when we’re done eating can you__?” “Okay we’re ready to pay but we’re splitting the bill 10 ways and we’re not all paying card we got 5 people paying cash” Picky eaters who want to create their own dish, so on and so on. Do you think you could handle all that at once? Just you by yourself? It’s a lot. So y’all gotta be patient when you go out to eat in busy days, expect waits you’re not the center of attention. Often times your waiter isn’t inattentive, they’re just weeded. “In the weeds” is a sever term basically meaning I’m fucked rn..
The one thing I have to disagree with is the allergy thing. If you want to go out with friends you gotta make do with your allergies. Some places cater to that, some don't. No need to get mad at somebody because their body won't let them eat certain food.
Colonel Lemons he’s saying basically “if you’re lactose and gluten intolerant, don’t eat at a pizza place; instead eat somewhere that caters to your needs.” By your logic, those friends don’t sound like friends because they don’t take into consideration their friends needs.
Cleodel But there is also no guarantee that it didn’t come in contact with anything gluten. My sister has celiac disease so pizza places are on our top so not eat at places because those happen to be one of the most celiac unfriendly places ever, even if they do have gluten free options.
Nope. If they have internet connections or the restaurant is clearly for food that caters to specific foods, google a place that might serve you. I worked at a southern bbq place and people would come and ask if anything was vegan, gluten free, healthy. NO. Why would it be that way? The question only made sense when we got foreign customers because they probably weren't familiar with the food. Or I also worked in a bakery. So many angry folks that were mad we weren't making healthy, sugar free, gluten free, vegan friendly cakes and pastries. Google it and find the bakery to cater to you. Those types of recipes might be in progress, but it's hard to make good tasting food recipes that caters to certain diets. Especially sweets.
Colonel Lemons I was going to say the same thing. I have celiac and can't tell you how many times my family or friends really wanted to get pizza and I ended up just ordering a salad because I couldn't eat anything else. I used to be a server, well before most places made accommodations for allergies. I get how difficult it can be, however allergies are allergies and can kill someone
The kitchen usually gets paid more hourly and also gets a percentage of the servers tip at the end of the day. In some restaurants the kitchen will also get free meals while the servers don't.
horselover1904 I've worked in both positions. For my jobs servers got all tips, but were paid less. The cooks worry about the food and making sure everything is stocked for the next day. Servers are in charge or dishes and doing most of the cleaning. Free meals for both of us. If it was a to go order the kitchen got the tip. It pretty much evens out, I mean both of you are going to always have something to do and work hard. Either way you gain respect for everyone that has done the same
I've worked both jobs and I honestly prefer to serve tables, being a cook near the stove heat for so long is rough. You get sweaty, greasy, and easily pissed off if the kitchen isn't running at a good pace. In my last experience as a cook the servers where I worked were the laziest and had no idea how long it took to cook anything. The servers are a cooks annoying customers lol.
It's cause if minimum wage. Some get paid like 2 dollars an hour(way below minimum wage) cause they really on tips. You kinda have to tip. How will they live off if that.
American dining out is probably cheaper tho cos the restaurants cut costs by not paying their servers properly. Servers make 1-3 dollars per hour. Just imagine earning that wage. It should be criminal.
10 dollars is standard, if you where there for about an hour and spend 65-85 dollars, a general tip is about 15%- Also generally speaking middle to upper class restaurants have cheaper food prices in America than in Europe which help balance a tip, I.E. let’s say 4 people went to dinner for an hour and the total is 65 dollars, 15% of that is 9 dollars each person is responsible for about 2.25 of a tip, it’s not expected that each person pays a individual tip its collective, if your there for more than an hour/ hour and a half, it’s appropriate to tip closer to 20/25% because the longer your at that table the less people they can wait on. But 2.25 is not a big dollar amount for going somewhere, having someone serving you for an hour or so....
I have a severe gluten allergy and it makes me so sad that I can't just go out for pizza or donuts with my friends, or when I get dirty looks from the servers just because I want to be a normal teenager and go out to eat with my family. People always think that my allergies aren't as severe as they really are and I have gotten very sick and had to go to the hospital because the waitress at Buffalo wild wings told me that they could make the fries in a separate frier but really they couldn't. So that was it I just wanted to rant a little and feel free to leave a comment of you have food restrictions or allergies and you want to rant because we do that a lot 😉 also have a nice day ❤️
Thank you I have severe dairy and egg allergies so eating out is a whole sitch for me. Lots of repeating the order haha, birthday parties and holiday foods are a particular sore spot. I desperately wanted to rant I just wanted to see that someone else has a similar problem. I dont want to be judged for not being able to eat what I want to. At least I eat healthier!
@@frogjasmine Yeppers, I hate it when people are like, "it's ok for you to have SOME gluten, just not a lot." And I'm like when did you start being an expert on celiac disease 😂😂
@@saraklinkosz2623 I know It's like there're annoyed with the fact that I have food restrictions, and I'm like "Would you like to not be able to eat basically anything!?!"
There is a difference between servent and server, but even if I had a servent, I still wouldnt snap because I would still treat them like a human being
Servant: a person who performs duties for others, especially a person employed in a house on domestic duties or as a personal attendant. Server: a person or thing that provides a service or commodity.
Kermit Marbles i see what you’re saying but if someone is at their place of work, they are usually nice because THATS THEIR JOB and its extremely uncomfortable when people think you’re flirting for just doing your job and try to flirt with you
When people say “you’re lucky to get hit on” they are talking about how that means people find you pretty. Many men don’t get attention like that. You might not know notice it if you get hit on a lot but men don’t usually get hit on
That same dude also complained about the homeless issue. Maybe speak to management about creating a feeding program with the stuff that’s about to turn? Or literally anything that doesn’t further demonize homeless people. I’m broke constantly but manage to carry fruit and packaged snacks (from Aldi, coz they’re cheap!) in my car when I know I’ll be in a high homeless area.
Are servers really that annoyed with people with allergies? My friends with allergies do tend to eat at home most of the time, but if we all want to go out somewhere together you would hope they would try their best and take it seriously instead of being so irritated? Many places including pizza places have vegan, dairy free, or gluten free options. So it seems like a pretty reasonable question. :( I can understand if the customers are being unreasonable about it somehow but it seems like something that should be expected and trained for instead of being offended by it.
Please, that's not what he meant. Obviously if the place offers gluten free options it's not a problem, but the example he made was more like a vegan going to a steakhouse and expecting to have countless options to eat.
I think it was misconveyed or whatever. We get annoyed with people who have allergies to the biggest ingredients in our food. Like don't go to a pizza restaurant that's flour cheese and bread if you cant eat any of it. Dont make us create a new dish for you. Go somewehre that has steaks and soup and salad . or people who say they are allergic just because they dont like something. Just tell is to take it off lol
I once tried a very high end oyster restaurant and the girl who delivered bread never said anything (did her thing and left) but when my mom asked her about herself we found out that she was the top student at her school and she worked like four jobs so support her family and she was raising her 10+ siblings, while being involved in her community. Best person I’ve ever met
I am very very nice to restaurant servers, smiling and polite and stuff.. but sometimes some of them are just assholes and rude even if you are very polite with them
I work as a hostess at a restaurant and I'm the one that has to clean up those messes children make. I thoroughly enjoy my job, but when a customer has 6 children and doesn't even remotely attempt to help clean up, that gets under my skin. I've spent 20 minutes cleaning up ONE table for 6 little kids and it was absolutely disgusting. Also, as a hostess I have to go around and cater (pun) to the customers by refilling drinks, collecting dirty dishes, and help out the servers and bartenders. I have seen the lousy tippers, rude and inappropriate customers, verbal tips, and awkward encounters. I've only had my job for 2 months, and I've witnessed a lot of these pet peeves. 😂
Taylor Ma sorry “ bad tips?” I personally live in a poor family and it’s hard to tip a lot so people can think we are rude please think about that we also just spent hundreds of dollars on this food
13지민 unfortunately servers rely on tips to make a living, so if you can’t afford to tip you should probably just be cooking at home. It’s all around cheaper anyway
When I bartended I would wear at least a silver (naturally antimicrobial) wedding band. I might spend $30-$40 on it but it saved me from every guy from hitting on me. Now, if I liked them I would take the ring off.
TheOscar401 lol well sorry that some people don’t want to pay for an entire group’s food, while other people in the group only have credit card/debit card on them and can’t directly hand you cash to have you cover them/combine your checks. going dutch is very common among Americans, coming from a Chinese family, i’m not going to ALWAYS let ONE person pick up the check (that’s chinese tradition)
why would that be an excuse for the customers to have to pay altogether? it's not the customers' fault that it's busy as hell and there is only ONE register. even so, people in America aren't EXPECTED to pick up a full bill unless it's for a special occasion
It’s not so much the separate checks thing, it’s splitting up the checks in weird ways. “Yeah so us two are together and I’m paying for his drinks and her food down at the end.” Like all or nothing people. It takes a while to split your ticket up like that and we only have a couple server stations to do that.
So true I’m seeing these people saying snapping at people isn’t rude, or working in a restaurant isn’t hard. Clearly you haven’t worked in one or you would know the disastrous people you have to work with, like have some respect seriously, when I worked in a restaurant I worked very hard and snapping or waving is so rude, Trust me I see you, I just have other people to serve other than you so if you can just be patient I will get to you. These comments frustrate me so much
Is it just me, or are some of these people complaining about having to do their jobs? I worked in the service industry and of course have some crazy stories. But, some things are just part of your job description that you have to do! Most of these things aren't bad at all!
Do you understand the meaning of the word pet peeve? Have you not heard of people complain about the crappy parts about their jobs? Like it's a universal thing. I'm sure CEOs and janitors have their share of pet peeves even if it's their part of the job description.
I can deal well with all of these things but three. 1) do not grab me or touch me. You can’t touch strippers why would you think it’s appropriate to touch me? 2) do not sexually harass me in anyway, verbal is included. (I had one drunk idiot ask me to bring him his drinks topless I crumpled up my the sheet of paper I was taking the order on, and told him he’s not getting anything from me and could go to the bar.) 3) do not snap at me I’m not a dog.
I don't mind the wave down either. The snapping is kind of bothersome. But at least they're letting you know that they need something so you don't have to guess and waste time walking over there just to find out that they don't need anything
Waving or the one finger or raised hand I never minded especially if I had a full section and it was hard to get my attention snapping or yelling is rude
My fav thing is when customers think “getting the manager” gets you in trouble... lmao they hired me and I’ve worked here for years.... YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. HA.
i didn't actually know it was rude to wave at a server! i'd never snap or click my tongue at someone, or yell out at them. but if i see my server a table or two away i'll try to make eye contact silently, smile, and wave saying "excuse me" if they're within earshot. is that rude? i always thought i was being polite but maybe not...
I was a server for years.. I don't get this one.. Of course customers can politely wave at you when they want something. the other option us what telepathy? But really like everything else, its all in how its done.
It’s only rude when we are clearly taking someone’s order or talking to another table and the customer sits their waving... like I see you but I’m in the middle of helping someone else right now. It actually happens a lot.
I remember when me and my friends (we’re all 15, so very low paying jobs) once sat at a restaurant for 30 minutes SCRAPING up money for a decent tip. THEN went back to the restaurant the next day to add five more dollars. She looked mildly concerned. Marley if you’re reading this, I hope we gave you enough.
Bless you for doing that. She probably didn't expect it, ESPECIALLY from teenagers. In the food industry teens are notoriously known for not tipping, if they even pay off the bill. So thank you for going above and beyond
@@hadassaheritage I know a whole group of like twelve teenagers will come in and then not tip, I once had some teenager be like keep the change and then him and his friends started laughing and the change was a penny when I checked man I hated those people
Whenever I go out to eat with family, we try to tip as much as we can and be friendly to servers. We usually don't end up with a very high bill (I'd say about $50 a lot of the time, maybe less), but we still leave at least $10 when we can. Usually more, especially if the server is good. A lot of my family has had jobs like that, and I most likely will as well considering I'm still in the beginning of high school and getting commissions for art. That will probably be my line of work, and I will most likely need a job or two working at restaurants to live while I'm working my way up and building a reputation. As long as you have the money, I don't get why you wouldn't leave a nice top if the service was at least decent? I mean, I get leaving a very small or no tip for horrible service, but that'll be very rare.
I FEEL YOU GIRL!!! My biggest pet peeve is someone, especially if it's not my table say can I get a ___,____,___,___,____ when I don't have my notepad 😭
I think it's time for servers to come together and demand that their minimum wage be higher. That way they wouldn't have to put up with rude customers to get a tip. Plus I think its unethical for an employer to pay an unfair wage to its workers. That is the employer's responsibility not the consumer's. (I definitely do tip because I know its important because of the system we have in place now. But I think the system is wrong)
4everInTheClouds so the Please explain where the employer is going to get the extra money to pay the servers, keep up with the restaurant and still pay for inventory I think that if you can't afford to tip or just don't want to you shouldn't be allowed in a restaurant
I would not mind paying more for food if that meant the workers got paid well. Also many industries are able to keep up inventory and pay their workers. Look at retail I pay for the products but customer service very much apart of the retail industry . But I don’t tip the customer service staff but I do pay for the products. The price products does take into account paying for labor.
Yeah what your saying could work but a restaurant is completely different from retail it would take a lot to change the laws to do this and I think that a lot of people would rather try to make our system better than completely change and all you have to do change is tip decently but I'm not trying to completely debunk your opinion you completely deserve to think freely
The thing is they usually make way more than minimum wage. Even if they only have 3 tables every hour and the totals come up to $20 each. That's $6 an hour if they only tip 10% plus the minimum wage they make of like 7 per hour. When I go out to eat it is usually at least $50 and tip 20% so $10 and that's what most people do. Plus if they make less than regular min wage then their employer has to compensate the difference. Everyone complains fast food workers should find a different job if they don't like minimum wage(not saying I agree) but same goes for servers
exactly, clearly nothing is good for them. they have tables, waving and snapping is not a bad thing. why would they yell across the room? i hate when servers complain about everything. it’s literally their job to cater to their tables.
Usually eye contact is a basic human way to let someone know you want their attention. Make eye contact, smile, maybe a quick gesture. But don't be pissed if they can't come to you straight away. Priorities are a thing.
Say "Excuse me, (name)." and if that doesn't work, then a quick wave while saying that as well is better than snapping significantly. I definitely won't help you as quick as soon as I hear a snap from you.
I think I agreed with most the things, but I was kind of annoyed with the guy who said why do you even go to restaurants if you are allergic to gluten. You cannot control what you are allergic to?!?
You can control which restaurants you go to. If you have allergies then you should go to a restaurant that can accommodate those allergies. You should not walk into a restaurant blindly and expect to have a ton of options.
Ashley Arnold Frustrating part of that is when you have a large family or people who don’t consider you when choosing places to eat. I always like to look at the restaurant’s website before I go- cuz usually they’ll have at least the menu. There been so many frustrating times though where they take me to an unknown small place that doesn’t offer a gluten free menu and I don’t even know what food they sell. So, just be kind the gluten intolerant child who gets mixed in with groups. I’m already anxious when ordering food normally. Being in an unfamiliar place and having to quiz the servers isn’t fun for me, even watching my relatives asking the questions for me because I’m too shy hurts me.
My dad was a server and every time they might mess up his food a little bit, be just eats it because he understands what it's like to serve people and he always tips
YOu should watch a documentary how tips are supposed to be made.... Here in the states tipping is actually supposed to be done because the servers dont get paid hardly anything hourly.
I work at a vegan restaurant. One time, someone called and ask us what vegan items did we serve. Lol A lot if times, I have to tell customers to please look at the menu.
1. "What's the difference between the 2 piece fish and the 3 piece fish?" "One piece of fish." 2. "Schells Dark? Now is that a light beer?" "It's got 'Dark' right in the name."
Ok i understand all these except the name one. Who can remember everyones name for every person they will meet for only 2 minutes? That just seems oversensitive to me
When you're eating out, knowing your server's name and calling them by name is a much better way to get your server's attention than anything else. In general, it's rude to call someone "you," and the fact that most waiters and waitresses will tell you their name when you are seated. A server is a person, not a robot.
You don’t have to, but you can at least try and remember your server’s name for the hour or so that you’re eating there. It’s not that hard to remember at least for a certain span of time, and if you’re a regular, you’ll probably remember the name eventually. Otherwise, just say “excuse me” and in addressing them, “ma’am” or “sir”, etc.
*works in COFFEE HOUSE* Me: “what drinks would you like?” Customer: “coffee.” Me: “yeah no problem! What kind would you like?” Customer: “just coffee.” Me: “okay so what about like a latte, cappuccino, americano etc” Customer: “just. Regular. Coffee.” Me: *gives up and makes Americano seeing as they didn’t bother to mention any sort of milk. Takes it over* Me: “here’s your coffee for you, enjoy!” Customer: “is there no milk with this?!?!?!” WTFFFF. You asked for coffee. You got coffee.
horselover1904 you have my deepest condolences. I was a barista 4 years ago and was treated horribly by some of the rudest ppl. They wouldn’t specify and then they’d bite my head off when I tried to deduce what they needed. I don’t have the fortitude for that job!
😅 sorry for you. I don’t really drink coffee, so I don’t know what the hell is latte, americano,etc... but that’s why I don’t ever order coffee- don’t want to trouble anyone

As a British citizen I just cannot get my head around the US tipping culture. I understand waiting staff are underpaid, I have just failed to have anyone adequately explain why the onus is on the customer to make up the shortfall, rather than the employer. If you get a tip in the UK, it genuinely means you did a great job, rather than just a token gesture. Feel free to enlighten me
Antoine McCalla lol I don’t understand completely either, I was born and raised here in the us and I just know you have to tip minimum 15% and if it was great service 20-25%. In the uk do you tip pizza delivery person, the taxi driver, barista, your hair stylist, the doorman at a hotel, the housekeeping services at a hotel? I just figure in us we tip nearly everyone lol
Genevieve I tip my server if they provided outstanding service. No one else. You guys probably think UK tourists are mean when we don't tip but we just don't tip just because you did your job with a smile on your face.
Antoine McCalla lol, I think the bare minimum here for a tip is a smile! But really, I’ve been out with ppl that even when the service was not even good, they tipped 10%. I don’t know if I’d do that. It’s definitely taken as an insult if you don’t. I didn’t know that in Britain tipping wasn’t customary-i think I still would if i visited, I’d feel guilty otherwise lol.
Genevieve apparently it's because servers are paid so little the tip makes up their wage. With some making $2.15 an hour I get that they're upset when no one tips but the whole system should change so they are paid enough up front anyways
I think this really depends on the sort/ management of the Resturant. I’ve been to ones who are very prompt and ones that ignore you completely (up to an hour, until you ask another server.) It also depends on the servers initial attitude, the ones that are making you wait ages tend to be pretty annoyed from the beginning and they could be just tired but there are ones that tend to be happy and are just better servers. Obviously it also depends if busy but I’m relating to none peak hours.
That menu thing is kinda annoying if they don't wanna tell you do you have those things.. I have a friend who can't see well and needs that help when he has a bad day with his eyes and can't actually see the text at all. I help when I can but I'm not always with him and I'm also dyslexic - so sometimes when I read it's really hard depending on font and how they name things.
American waiters only make 2.13 an hour, when minimum wage is 7.50 averagely. They need tips to feed their family. The reason they are paid so low and live off of tips is so restaurants can keep Food prices lower. It also encourages waiters to be more friendly for that extra money.
Lort regarding Asia, I think you're right because as an Asian myself and seeing others, they aren't one to leave tips, but here they try every now and then to do so
Nadi Mairi I don't get why people take servers not wanting to be treated like personal servants so personally. I've never been a server but it sounds so tough, especially when you hear how much vitriol non-servers have over silly thing like being expected to tip.
The worst thing I saw in a restaurant was a mother taunting the waitress about the slow service and asking her if she needs her teenage son to help out in the kitchen to make things go faster. As if she’s actually going to make her son do that. Jeez, eat elsewhere , lady, if you’re that hungry!
Not true... If they don’t make at least 7.25 an hour every hour they worked they are compensated... minimum wage, but usually severs make waaaaay more than minimum wage in their shifts so I don’t feel bad for them... especially when they are sub par... and I always tip... if you hate serving so much there are plenty other jobs out there
What about the people that don't tell you they have an allergy until they get their food. "Oh does _____ contain peanuts? Because little Suzy is deathly allergic to peanuts." Okay, Carol, now I have to go back to the kitchen, throw out this food and have the chef remake Suzy's food. Then they complain that it's taking too long. I can't. If you or another person in your party has an allergy please let someone know when you order
4:43 Does this dude really have a problem with homeless people simply coming in? He didn't say loitering or causing a scene, just the homeless. It's California. Lot's of people are homeless. If they came to buy food idk what the problem is. Shame on you.
Jade Thrasher I understand exactly what you mean. But as someone who has been a waitress and bartender in the past. It’s not workers that actually are annoyed by it. The customers get on their high horses and have a go at the staff for allowing them in. So the worker doesn’t necessarily get annoyed at the homeless person but the don’t want the conflict at the same time. Xx
Jade Thrasher a homeless person can also come in smelling like butt ass when they sit inside a restaurant with the aroma of that smell and thats one of the reasons customers come at the staff for that
Cesar Sanchez Sounds like an entitled customer problem. Shame on them. I've worked in food and at a laundromat so I've had my fair share with the homeless, if I can handle them, so can Karen. I'm not here to discriminate against anyone (especially when they're not causing an issue) and neither should that restaurant. Also, there's plenty of homeless people that take care of themselves. The ignorance of people who think like that is astonishing. I'd push some people off their high horses if I could.
Jade Thrasher im saying the aroma of the smell is what ticks people . I mean come on you’re eating at a restaurant and have a homeless dude sitting a table away from you smelling like the devil’s asscheeks while you’re eating . you’re gonna get disgusted stop fronting 😂😂
9 times out of 10 it's to ask a question that could be solved by looking at their menu, or to change their minds about something that the kitchen is already in the process of making.
So, if you have been waiting for your check like 20 minutes and are pretty sure the server forgot about you (like when they come over, they go sorry, I forgot about you, which happens and is OK, I get it), what are you supposed to do to get the check?
I still cant understand why d heck server/waiters are not paid as a normal employee...tipping in most country on earth are considered as either a complement for a good service or it can also be insulting. How come the employer take their hand off their employee well being and put the responsibility on the customer...the customer just want to eat and enjoy the experience...not to do math...and feels afraid of insulting the stuff of giving not enough after they pay whats listed on their menu
If servers were paid minimum wage and didn’t receive tips often, then the menu prices would have to increase greatly so that the restaurant can make enough money to pay their servers. You’d still be paying about the same even without tipping this way.
M0j0 dani,I completely understand the underlying logic behind it... The issue is, employee well being should be the responsibility of the employer...if need to increase the price to afford the waiter's salary then so do it...dont put the responsibility to the customer...
M0j0 dani the funny thing about that, my area raised their minimum wage, and prices barely went up . . . maybe if CEOs weren't paid like, 575 times what their lowest paid employees were, they could afford to pay them a living wage instead of expecting others to do their job of paying their employees.
"What's good here?" I don't ask because I haven't looked at the menu, I ask because I want to get something that they feel represents their restaurant well.
And no server has time or cares about what you're eating. You're here to eat what you want, not me. If that weren't the case, the roles would be reversed. Read the fkn menu.
A better question to ask is “what’s your favorite thing here?” cuz “what’s good here?” is really up to you. Everyone one has a different taste so what’s good to one person may not be good to you.

😂😂😂
And there’s me: I won’t ask for anything for fear of being annoying.

My dad does that and it’s so weird and the servers are sometimes taken aback.
This! How are you suppose to flag a server down if you need something or a check? I thought waving was the most polite thing to do.
Shade Empress yeah i didnt like when my dad did that but now i just don’t care tough i don’t do it lol

£100($127) isn't a common tip in America at most restaurants the largest you'll get is about $20. $5-$10 is the average here too.
The tips here are typically 20% of your meal cost.
I don’t tip at all in the UK, they never ask for it.
Also, why should I? You’re supposed to be paid by your employer, I’m not responsible for your salary.
If they have a problem with that, mabye they should get a better job?
Cookie K Ig it’s just different in the us. Yes, the employers should pay better, but they never will, that’s why we tip. It’s just how it is 🤷🏼♀️
TheUglyDuckling If you can’t afford to tip, don’t go out to eat, it’s as simple as that 🤷🏼♀️

ITS TOO REAL THO

Their pet peeves are valid but all this video did was make me even more anxious about eating at restaurants
It's our job, trust me we don't care.
youre the one that searched it
Don’t feel anxious at all!!
Just be respectful leave a tip we would love to have you back if you do that
As a person who's worked as a server, I think it's fine if they wave you down politely...They shouldn't have to do that in the first place...
Yeah but when they’re practically falling out of their chair, gesticulating and waving with both arms (after just having sat down), it’s a different story

The reason why decent wages in this industry are rare is due to workers getting used to the almost forced down tipping system that can lead to crazy sporadic income if the restaurant has a high influx of customers.
i know its insane the way they are in the US!
Amen!!
-
It started during the great depression, I believe.
I'd never get it too
Ok, just as a person with a lot of allergies, we're not trying to be difficult.
Nix Levencheen THANK YOU
yeah no like that dude who was like complaining about it??? like??? i have a severe milk allergy i’m so sorry that i just wanted to eat out...
It's not your fault tho

SNAPPING YOUR FINGERS IS LITERALLY THE WORST - speaking from experience.
I am not even a waiter and I agree.
Put your hand up and make alot of eyecontact. If its a good server, it'll work.
wait.
I think that's totally ok and not mean at all or annoying
Edit: also if you have empty cups at the end of the table or menus, etc it's easier to spot when it's busy- i try not to be annoying by asking y'all need water all the time, so I can easily refill and take away plates or check if I can visual see what's up- if not then it's like a guessing game for the servers but good servers can tell when's the right time to ask how's everything doing, more water, check, etc :D
They will be back....don’t you worry!
Dude said “you’re lucky” lmao do guys seriously think we enjoy them flirting with us cause I don’t, it bothers me. Like obviously there’s no problem with trying but if they aren’t interested just stop.
he was frustrating me every time he spoke
MTE. She was basically saying she doesn't like being sexually harassed by customers and he thinks she's lucky to have that.
you actually think getting hit on is the same equivalent as being sexually harassed?
In a workplace environment, where there is a power imbalance (such as when a service industry worker is assisting a customer, which is literally the subject of this video/comments), yes it is.
Also, "same equivalent" is redundant.
Racist
My family is always very nice to servers, my brother always puts all the plates and silverware together and the garbage as well. Sometimes my family gets annoyed with him but he is just making their jobs easier, so yeah. That’s for serving ppl and dealing with their sh*t!!

I feel your pain. I had to deal with a customer that got snippy with me when I made her what she asked for
I've never been a waitress, but I have been a cashier at a McDonald's...near Columbus Circle...during rush hour...with customers that knew little to no English.

My personal favorite happened to me the other day (I’m not a server anymore, but I do work in food)

Look at a lot of customer service jobs that don't get tips i.e cashiers.
also, you shouldn't always tip. Tip accordingly to how good service really was. I'm a server btw
In the UK, servers do just as good of a job and we aint tipping nobody!
Dana and while they’re pondering you go “I can give you some more time, I’ll be right back!” And they’re like “no no we’re ready” and then 10 minutes later you’re finally done
and you feel your other tables staring at you the whole time
Omg that is so true!
I’ve never related to anything more in my life
Dana and then they finally decide what to order and you ask what they would like for their side and it’s another 10 minutes of hmmm
Im a server and I get all of these things except the allergy one, they don’t really have a choice and are usually uncomfortable about having to ask for things specially done and I’m usually really sweet to them because I feel bad about it
Magnolia Starr THANK YOU
My mom has celiac disease, so I also try to accommodate people with allergies as much as I can. I'm always happy to help if they are willing to wait, if they forgot to ask before we started serving but I get seriously annoyed when they just expect me to randomly get food matching their specific needs out of thin air, stat.
i think if you have celiac you definitely have a choice to NOT go to a pizza place, which is what the guy in the video was talking about.
Eliza h. Don’t feel bad, as a waiter myself as long as you’re kind customers every tip contributes, no matter how small😊
Robin Trevor you cant always afford tip. Maybe they need to save more money for something other than a tip
Robin Trevor they didn't say they don't tip they leave a tip but not as much as desired. They can go out for special occasions, that's rude af to tell the, they shouldn't come out😐
Robin Trevor well I mean if the costumers don't wanna tip the server, they don't have to

Kathryn McCallum I agree with you so much. They may think it is really rude , but I kinda feel like it isn’t? You are just signing that you need a waiter. Maybe you need something fast? Do they think that just sitting there is going to help? Like no.
My family just waits until the waiter comes and ask if we need anything. Like "normal people" 😂
I would have died of thirst by then!

Ellie McHale Okay, but there is gluten free pizza sans cheese.
So asking if a place has that option isn’t really a problem.

Can we have waiters vs the kitchen? Because the servers get the tip and deal with the shittiest but the back is gruelling sweaty work
sam M I agree it is hard work, but where I live chefs/back of house get paid more hence why servers get tips to make the rest up
The kitchen usually gets paid more hourly and also gets a percentage of the servers tip at the end of the day.

Ok srsly, 10 bucks is a low amount of tip? Im not comming to america thdy need to fix their resturant practices
It's cause if minimum wage. Some get paid like 2 dollars an hour(way below minimum wage) cause they really on tips. You kinda have to tip. How will they live off if that.
It's total bs and a lot of servers are very entitled.
American dining out is probably cheaper tho cos the restaurants cut costs by not paying their servers properly. Servers make 1-3 dollars per hour. Just imagine earning that wage. It should be criminal.
@@DawnKellyMedia let's see you make 1-3 dollars an hour as your wage honey. Servers are not entitled. You are just cheap.

Right? That was the stupidest thing in this video. Being annoyed because people have allergies.
i have a milk allergy and like i don’t know why servers get so annoyed? like i’m so sorry that i wanted to eat out...
It's irritating AF!! People coming to a seafood restaurant but allergic to damn seafood. WTF!!!!

TheOscar401 lol well sorry that some people don’t want to pay for an entire group’s food, while other people in the group only have credit card/debit card on them and can’t directly hand you cash to have you cover them/combine your checks. going dutch is very common among Americans, coming from a Chinese family, i’m not going to ALWAYS let ONE person pick up the check (that’s chinese tradition)
rachael on busy nights where each server has around 8 or more tables at the same time and multiple servers share 1 register?
why would that be an excuse for the customers to have to pay altogether? it's not the customers' fault that it's busy as hell and there is only ONE register. even so, people in America aren't EXPECTED to pick up a full bill unless it's for a special occasion
It’s not so much the separate checks thing, it’s splitting up the checks in weird ways. “Yeah so us two are together and I’m paying for his drinks and her food down at the end.” Like all or nothing people. It takes a while to split your ticket up like that and we only have a couple server stations to do that.
People who have said any negative things have clearly never been a server/bartender.
Brianna Fure fact
So true I’m seeing these people saying snapping at people isn’t rude, or working in a restaurant isn’t hard. Clearly you haven’t worked in one or you would know the disastrous people you have to work with, like have some respect seriously, when I worked in a restaurant I worked very hard and snapping or waving is so rude, Trust me I see you, I just have other people to serve other than you so if you can just be patient I will get to you. These comments frustrate me so much
Dealing with the public is always difficult; however, you knew what you sign up for when you decided to be in this line of work
Is it just me, or are some of these people complaining about having to do their jobs? I worked in the service industry and of course have some crazy stories. But, some things are just part of your job description that you have to do! Most of these things aren't bad at all!
Do you understand the meaning of the word pet peeve? Have you not heard of people complain about the crappy parts about their jobs? Like it's a universal thing. I'm sure CEOs and janitors have their share of pet peeves even if it's their part of the job description.
I'm also in the industry and thought the same thing
Not just you. :)
I agree with you. Some of these people shouldn’t be servers.
I’ve always wanted to tip a waiter a $100 dollar bill at least once a year.
Fluffy Potato that would be amazing lol
I’m a waitress, but I don’t mind being waved down 🤷🏽♀️
I don't mind the wave down either. The snapping is kind of bothersome. But at least they're letting you know that they need something so you don't have to guess and waste time walking over there just to find out that they don't need anything
Trust it’s not easy to get attenti9n for a bill if the waiter forgets
How else to do it ?
Waving or the one finger or raised hand I never minded especially if I had a full section and it was hard to get my attention snapping or yelling is rude
Shan Parker right... never bothered me either.. some days it was appreciated It gets busy
It's all about intent. I don't mind most waves but people can definitely wave rudely. Safest bet is to add an "excuse me"
It’s only rude when we are clearly taking someone’s order or talking to another table and the customer sits their waving... like I see you but I’m in the middle of helping someone else right now.
@@hadassaheritage I know a whole group of like twelve teenagers will come in and then not tip, I once had some teenager be like keep the change and then him and his friends started laughing and the change was a penny when I checked man I hated those people
So if we can't call you, can't wave or raise our hands, are we just stranded?
just smile at your server and it always works
When the server passes, and it wont take long for them to pass you, say excuse me and ask them for what you want politely.
"Stranded" they aren't leaving you on a desert island. Wait a couple minutes. Patience is a virtue.
Smile at them?
They’ll get to you lol
I saw the title and screamed because IM A SERVER AND NONE OF MY FRIENDS ARE SO NOBODY UNDERSTANDS THE STRUGGLE
Lea Oversteegen GIRL I UNDERSTAND YOUR STRUGGLES. being a server is a job only some people can accomplish
I FEEL YOU GIRL!!! My biggest pet peeve is someone, especially if it's not my table say can I get a ___,____,___,___,____ when I don't have my notepad 😭
Lea Oversteegen yassss girl I. FEEL. YOU.
I think kinda got lucky because i was a server for a buffet but i was also a cashier so ya i feel your pain
OhMyJosh I'mSoDunWithYou Do what other countries (and some in the states) do. Have gratuity included in the menu.
How do you actually call a server ?
exactly, clearly nothing is good for them. they have tables, waving and snapping is not a bad thing. why would they yell across the room? i hate when servers complain about everything. it’s literally their job to cater to their tables.
Usually eye contact is a basic human way to let someone know you want their attention. Make eye contact, smile, maybe a quick gesture. But don't be pissed if they can't come to you straight away. Priorities are a thing.
I'd just raise my hand whenever they're close to me. I think waving is also fine but the finger snapping is kinda rude
NAOMI VDB Instead of waving them down, say “excuse me (name of server) “ and don’t call them when they are at another table.
Say "Excuse me, (name)." and if that doesn't work, then a quick wave while saying that as well is better than snapping significantly. I definitely won't help you as quick as soon as I hear a snap from you.
"I'm getting sweaty because I'm angry." I felt that.
I think I agreed with most the things, but I was kind of annoyed with the guy who said why do you even go to restaurants if you are allergic to gluten. You cannot control what you are allergic to?!?
Vanessa Olmedo HAMILTONNNN
Yes but if a person goes to a restaurant that makes a specific thing and usually is not gluten free...
He means go to pizza places
My dad was a server and every time they might mess up his food a little bit, be just eats it because he understands what it's like to serve people and he always tips
Isn’t tipping based on how good service is?
Zack's Channel if you eat out, you owe them 15% regardless.
Zack's Channel last time I checked
YOu should watch a documentary how tips are supposed to be made.... Here in the states tipping is actually supposed to be done because the servers dont get paid hardly anything hourly.
Eric Wininger no it’s 20%
Why do Americans tip? Servers get paid
I work at a vegan restaurant. One time, someone called and ask us what vegan items did we serve. Lol
A lot if times, I have to tell customers to please look at the menu.
dude we have huge signs all around our restaurant that say "BREAKFAST SERVED ALL DAY" and i still get asked if we serve it all day 🙄
I had someone ask me the difference between wings and boneless wings once, I had to walk away before I burst out laughing.
1. "What's the difference between the 2 piece fish and the 3 piece fish?"
"One piece of fish."
2. "Schells Dark? Now is that a light beer?"
"It's got 'Dark' right in the name."
I bet you the white guy works at Cheesecake Factory from the way he describes his menu
whyjordie “the white guy” Atleast try to explain what he looks like before you say their skin color?
adhswift09 he looks.. like a white guy? like?
lol there's only one white guy
There are two white guys. The Italian guy is still white.
Harpfrmhel that guy actually looks middle eastern
Ok i understand all these except the name one. Who can remember everyones name for every person they will meet for only 2 minutes? That just seems oversensitive to me
When you're eating out, knowing your server's name and calling them by name is a much better way to get your server's attention than anything else. In general, it's rude to call someone "you," and the fact that most waiters and waitresses will tell you their name when you are seated. A server is a person, not a robot.
Rebecca Taylor true but its also something very few people can or will do. I forget the names of somr family members.
Or at least say "ma'am" or "sir."
Yeah, in Mexico, it's actually rude to call out your waiters name.
*works in COFFEE HOUSE*
Me: “what drinks would you like?”
Customer: “coffee.”
Me: “yeah no problem! What kind would you like?”
Customer: “just coffee.”
Me: “okay so what about like a latte, cappuccino, americano etc”
Customer: “just. Regular. Coffee.”
Me: *gives up and makes Americano seeing as they didn’t bother to mention any sort of milk. Takes it over*
Me: “here’s your coffee for you, enjoy!”
Customer: “is there no milk with this?!?!?!”
WTFFFF.
Taehyung's tongue Jimin's hair don’t be! I used to be like that myself before I was a barista. Just order a different one every time go somewhere and you will find one you like and learn what each of them are! It’s how I found out I love mochas
" i just wave back.." Lol nice!! Love it! 🖤
No one's gonna say how HOT the guy in the sweater is? 🔥 Lmao 😂 🙃
Feel free to enlighten me
EXACLTY, SAME IN MY COUNTRY. ITS RIDICULOUS.
I always clean my own table before I leave a restaurant, if you don’t there’s something wrong with you 😂👌
Yeah. I try to make it easier for the servers, ie stacking plates, trying to clean up spills.
I just put all of the plates together but it's also part of their job to clean the tables??
That menu thing is kinda annoying if they don't wanna tell you do you have those things.. I have a friend who can't see well and needs that help when he has a bad day with his eyes and can't actually see the text at all.
I help when I can but I'm not always with him and I'm also dyslexic - so sometimes when I read it's really hard depending on font and how they name things.
I hope these servers realize that in other countries besides America tipping is practically nonexistent.
American waiters only make 2.13 an hour, when minimum wage is 7.50 averagely. They need tips to feed their family. The reason they are paid so low and live off of tips is so restaurants can keep Food prices lower. It also encourages waiters to be more friendly for that extra money.
Lort in Israel tipping is a very common thing and everyone leaves a tip because some waiters don't get an actual salary and make money by tips only
Epsilon oh well I've never been to Africa or Asia, I'm basing my knowledge solely off of trips to Europe and South America.
Lort regarding Asia, I think you're right because as an Asian myself and seeing others, they aren't one to leave tips, but here they try every now and then to do so
That’s because in most other parts of the world gratuity is included in the bill
Now who is going to share some stories about rude servers?... I bet there are lots of those.
There are, but as someone who's been both a customer and server throughout their life, I dealt with a lot more rude customers than rude servers.
True but definitely not more than rude customers
Nadi Mairi I don't get why people take servers not wanting to be treated like personal servants so personally. I've never been a server but it sounds so tough, especially when you hear how much vitriol non-servers have over silly thing like being expected to tip.
Nadi Mairi my elderly grandma tripped on a rib bone that some other table dropped on the ground. the waiter laughed.
Nadi Mairi STFU
Some dude I’m serving: Flirtatious remark
Me: *subtly fiddles with a gay pride bracelet*
you're gay, you should know that doesn't stop cishet men :/ 😂
@@felixhenson9926 Unfortunatley -__-
The worst thing I saw in a restaurant was a mother taunting the waitress about the slow service and asking her if she needs her teenage son to help out in the kitchen to make things go faster. As if she’s actually going to make her son do that. Jeez, eat elsewhere , lady, if you’re that hungry!
And to think, waiters/waitresses still makes $2.13/hr for all the hell they have to go through. Sad.
And, they get taxed on tips, whether they get them or not, so, if you stiff them, they basically get to pay for part of your meal.
Not true... If they don’t make at least 7.25 an hour every hour they worked they are compensated... minimum wage, but usually severs make waaaaay more than minimum wage in their shifts so I don’t feel bad for them... especially when they are sub par... and I always tip... if you hate serving so much there are plenty other jobs out there
Jessica Bookout minimum wage is different for servers because we’re supposed to get tips
AJ Writer Never have I ever seen a waiter that makes less than £7/hr?
FreyaIs Trash I get paid $2.50 an hour for being a waitress so now you’ve seen it
What about the people that don't tell you they have an allergy until they get their food.
No front, sorry you weren't raised to be polite.
Usually people wave when the food is 1 hour late, and you ask the question where is my food
Nope they wave at you because they want another napkin or salt or pepper
Or they haven't been served after half an hour
Zoawesomeshowjumper This happened to me at IHop.😂😂 I’ve never waved down someone for salt or pepper??
Now that's the real question.
I was looking for that comment! The american tip system is just unfair and weird...
I try not to bother or annoy a server but somehow it means that we are ignored
"What's good here?" I don't ask because I haven't looked at the menu, I ask because I want to get something that they feel represents their restaurant well.
I usually ask: "What do you recommend?"
Sometimes servers don’t even eat the food at their restaurant. You came here to eat, not me. Look at the menu.
Right like damn I wanna know what you recommend.... You want a nice tip but I cant even get your opinion 🙄
