Day two of our motorcycle adventure exploring the edge of Essex. We follow the path of the ruthless Witchfinder General, have a pub lunch and visit one of the oldest cinemas in the UK, and a Downton Abbey filming spot.
Tendring is a district right up in the far north eastern corner of Essex. Famous for having one of the most ruthless Witch Finders in the UK’s history, and also famous for having one of the single most important towns in the USA’s history.
Go any further north, and you’re up to the Stour river that separates Suffolk and Essex, and go any further east, and you’re into the north sea, and Rotterdam in the Netherlands is the next bit of land you’ll come across.

Possibly the best promotion of Essex ever! You are fast becoming the face of “visit England” 👍
That’s very kind of you to say so, thank you Matt🙂
@@FreddieDobbs honestly it’s my pleasure Fred.
Freddy, the videography is spectacular, especially in the opening shots, Monika you have a sublime eye for the spectacular detail....fantastic video
Hugely appreciated Dave- I’ve shown this to Monika. Thank you🙂
I agree :D ...is it shooting all on iphone ??
Freddie, it takes real guts to document one's flailures and shortcomings, post them for all your viewers to see, and gently point to the moral 'Don't do this'. My Great-Uncle says that's the true virtue of humility.
That said, thanks for this really exceptional video, packed with both narrative and visual history!
Finding that many people to testify against someone must have taken a lot of time and effort. Glad to see that today Social Media has made things far more efficient. Progress!
Agreed- and people often had to travel for hours to testify against the accused. A scary time.
And a very fair point re social media!
The man (Ass) probably threatened the people
Irony…👀🧐😎😜
Very apt was not just the 6th Commandment "Thou shalt not do murder" on the church wall at 11:00, but maybe even moreso the 9th Commandment: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
In the south ppl lie for the joy of it
Thanks! Love your videos. For a new disc lock or anything else your Triumph needs.
Absolutely love the vibes in your videos, Freddie. Didn't realise that it's been 40 minutes haha.
Love from India 🇮🇳
Cheers!
One of your best videos yet! The filming, the editing, the narration, the content particularly in Harwich… all fabulous! As a proud American, I was in awe and I am very grateful that you made it to Harwich and gave us a tour and found Captain Christopher Jones’s house. Very very cool.
Great choice of music as well..
17:41 Nice jacket. Good fit. 29:40 Great place to eat with that view.
Interesting video. I didn't realise Harwich was so nice.
Freddie & Monika, thank you both for another perfect start to my Sunday morning. You are doing so much for the Essex tourism board and showing parts of the country that are often overlooked. You make a great team and have a style that is unique to TH-cam vlogs and has created its own genre.
Hugely appreciated, thank you Nick🙂
Harwich looks nice & that lovely restored cinema. My wife’s grandfather travelled the country installing the sound systems in all the old cinemas which were previously silent movie theatres
I used to ride my Norton Commando from West Wales to Harwich in the 70's to catch the DFDS to Bremerhaven. Never took much notice of the town. I was just glad the old dog made it ! 🏴
I have a glorious vision in my mind of this Mike; a Norton racing through the English countryside with a ferry to catch. Fantastic!
Fantastic episode. Love it. ❤️
My brother pulled away with his disc lock still fitted, BMW R1100SS Boxer Cup Replica, £1600 worth of damage. Ripped off carbon fiber Fender and the whole left side. He refused to use a disc lock after that! Now, I use one all the time, but have the glowing lead attached to my throttle so I don't forget it's there !
Noooooo!! That is so painful!😳💸 I’m going to have to do the same- buy one with a throttle attachment. I keep doing it🤯
These videos are perfect.
I've been interested in following my passion for these bikes finally now I'm 31 and can justify it.
Your channel and the Bonneville have certainly convinced me to do it - so thanks!
Greetings from Sidcup, Bexley.
I’m delighted to hear it!! Welcome to the wonderful world of bikes🙂🏍🤜🏼🤛🏼
Yup, forgot my disc lock once before .... prevented it happening again by using a short bit of thick rubber tubing that fitted snugly over the shaft of both my lock key and my ignition key individually - when not using the lock the tubing lived on the lock key, when I wanted to use the lock I'd have to take the tubing off the lock key and put it on the ignition key .... then when coming back to the bike I wouldn't be able to use the ignition key because the tubing was on it which would remind me instantly that I needed to remove the lock ... take the lock off, swap the tubing off the ignition key and back on to the lock key and away ya go. Never forgot it again 😉
I like this- I have some of this tubing from an unused spare key so will do this!🙂
Reminds me of an uncle who used to be responsible for the key to the local scout and community hall. People would borrow the key then forget it was in their pocket and not put it in a drop-box. He solved it by attaching the key to a building framing nail-plate complete with spikes and all painted bright red. Not one ever forgot it.
you can get a disklock with a reminder cable that you put on your handlebars so you won't forget. Another great video thank you Freddie and Monica
A big thanks for you both. The places the music the whole of it was just magic. Can only hope there will more like this on the way. This has really made my day.
Three words... Disc Lock Reminder.
If you (people generally) don't want to shell out £3 for one or maybe you think they look too unsightly, just get something that you can see when you sit on the bike to remind you to remove the lock.
They have saved me from embarrassment more times than I care to remember.
Very good idea re something I can see when I sit on the bike. Thanks Stuart🙂
Dammit you beat me to it.
Not that I'm competitive. 😁
@@FreddieDobbs A yellow tag that you keep on your keys when the lock is on the bike and with the lock when you're riding
Or buy one with an alarm (probably a bit more expensive). As soon as you pull the bike straight and/or roll a little, the alarm will sound. Also gives a little bit peace of mind that if someone fiddles with your bike, you or other will here the alarm. And hopefully interfine. I've got an Abus one, really happy with it. Edit: looks like you had one with an alarm...?
Disc lock cord Freddie.. mine is bright yellow and impossible not to be seen! Easy mistake to make if not
I am loving these posts, the mix of history, promoting local business, and that cabin, to die for, great work Freddie and Monica, loving your content!
Bond, Freddie Bond. Yes this was great, the history, the filming and the brake lock/ battery dilemma . Again I say no matter the focus there is always something to capture your attention , Monika's laughter included.
An absolute ‘Tour de Force’ ! Great cinematography, great subjects, great ‘script’. Thank you both for a lovely Sunday morning treat. Good luck for the drive to Tuscany - you make me ever more envious, but I’m sure you’ll have a great time and no doubt make some delicious vlogs!
Maybe the ever loyal Bonnie deserves a new battery!
Thank you Ian!🙂 I really should try a lithium battery before heading off🇮🇹
Brilliant , not what I expected but it was so interesting.
Not just about lovely biking roads in Essex but a history tour too
Well done Freddie and Monica.
Y’all are awesome! By far my favorite channel on TH-cam. I love that Monica doesn’t edit out the mishaps. Keep up the amazing work by both of you.
I'm in New Zealand and all I ever knew of Essex was from reading UK Car magazine in the 80's and 90's. Essex was all about blonded hair, turned up collars and white Escort XR3i's.
What a power couple you guys are. It struck me that apart from just getting my fix with motorcycle adventures how you have that perfect symbiosis down by both being great storytellers with each of your areas in each production.
I started my own journey to get my bike license this spring which in Sweden is not an easy task i should add. Last week I finally got it and this channel has been a continuous source of both inspiration and resolve throughout. I look forward to content to keep this and other northerners make it through a long and bikeless winter. All the best Freddie and Monika and thank you!
Congratulations on getting your licence! Must be hard not being able to ride through the winter. Is it any easier getting new bikes over there?
@@lilynorthover8378 thank you! Yes in the autumn there tend to be price drops on some new and used bikes as well. For instance, today i bought a Kawasaki Z400 '83 in quite good condition for €900.
Nice.
Excellent as always Freddie. Between your commentary & Monica’s filming talent you should be on mainstream TV.
The Xena disc lock with a reminder cable the wraps around the throttle & clutch has saved me making the same mistake 🙂👍🏼
Thanks Lee!🙂
Monika is so patient with you.LOLOL..patient and tolerant..LOL..to funny..LOL
This was absolutely stunning! What a fantastic episode and the history was incredible! We actually go to Cape Cod (MA, USA) every year for vacation and just got back last week actually. We normally stay in Eastham so it was so funny hearing that all those towns came directly from the UK (I had a feeling they did prior)! Cape Cod is such a beautiful area and if you ever make it over to the USA, I would highly recommend checking out all the history from this side of the pond! Thanks so much again for this incredible video - great job to you both! Ride safe and be well!
Fantastic to hear from you!🇺🇸 I must visit the area so I can link up the story, because I found it beyond fascinating. Thank you and ride safe🙂🤘🏼🤘🏼
@@FreddieDobbs Careful Freddie, with that feeding your patented boundless enthusiasm PLUS being in the land of Harley you'll surely explode!
hello good afternoon Freddie best regards to you and Monika and thanks for your history classes 😃

What a trio! All my best to you both Donna🙂👋🇨🇦
Looove old cinemas and theaters/operas.
Always a serene atmosphere.
Thanks Freddie and Monica for the fascinating tour and history lesson. Really enjoyed that. Hope the Bonneville is back in shape wit a new or newly charged battery. Cheers, Dan ✌️🏍🇨🇦
Thanks Dan, really glad you enjoyed it🙂 I think I’ll be buying a new battery this week
Awesome video and awesome content can’t wait for the next video Thank’s Freddie and Monika
Thanks Jason!🙂
Ah man this is so awesome, I am manningtree born and bred, (well born in colchester but always lived here) and its so cool to see you in my hometown, cant believe i found your channel only recently since getting back on 2 wheels but absolutely love it freddie, hope to see you around one day
Great opening shot: two mugs for coffee. Monica is with you, that‘s all I need to know!
Motorcycle life hack: connect your safety lock once in place on front wheel brake with a stearing bar with (I do not know how to properly describe it in english), but it's a kind of flexible line in a bright color. It serves as a reminder that your safety lock is on the weel. Line is in bright colour so you always see in when coming back to the bike. You get it off the bike with security lock and keep those two together ready to use next time.
Thank you Michael- I know exactly the kit you’re describing🙌🏻🙌🏻
Just got off the boat at Harwich. Never new it gad so much more. And we go regularly for fish and chips!
Small portable cover for your bike on your travels. Goes everywhere. Keeps the weather off, and is another layer of security. Goes over the seat when I strap the bike down on ferries.
Good one
Happy travels 👍
Once into the old Gatwick town, there are so many nice little streets🙂👌🏻 I really do need to start using a bike cover. I just get lazy actually taking it with me🤯
The randomness of seeing that same red Lea Francis turn up in a 'Marc Travels' video where he is leaving the ferry behind it riding to visit the UK... on an electric bike.
Live close by in Hertfordshire, often pop across the “border” for a bimble. Great content wonderfully filmed by Monika, makes you realise we should all make more of our local areas
Thanks Stuart!🙂
Brilliant vlog from you both again this Sunday morning, so well filmed, narrated and edited. Thanks both, ride safe.
Loved this vid. I started watching you because I love motorbikes & travelling. Now you add history lessons too. As a history graduate (almost 40 yrs ago) can I thank you & Monika for creating the perfect package of escapism.
PS I liked that the trike could use its exhausts as tyre warmers 🤣
I've done that with a disc lock.
That's why you get the stretchy cord thing.
Put it through the lock and then around your handle, reminds you that it's there when you get on your bike.
I’ll be buying one of these today🙂👌🏻
Excellent stuff Freddie and Monika, love the history of our country....
Good video,I would advise getting one of these plastic spiral cables when fitting a disc lock just to remind you😉
I’ve learned that we judge others on their actions and ourselves on our intentions. That’s where problems start.
Very well said and I agree 100%. A beautifully simple and very true observation
Nice one, Freddie. Loved the history; one of my ancestors (Bonner) part owned/captained the Mayflower before Captain Christopher Jones. Small world. Keep it up, both of you - really enjoy these.
Excellent video, clearly well researched with wonderful content 👏🏻
Thank you🙌🏻
A bit more history to annoy Monica with: The original plan by the pilgrims to set up a colony in the Americas was planned in Boston, Lincolnshire. They sailed out of Plymouth in the UK. They landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts. They then moved up coast and eventually (after a failed settlement or two) settled in Boston Massachusetts. Pretty convenient don't you think? 😀
Fascinating! Thank you for sharing this Stephen🙂
@@FreddieDobbs Thanks for the videos. I always enjoy what you two are up to.
You think maybe they named them after the places they left? 😂
@@sergentcolon1 yeah it was more in conjunction with Freddie naming the towns in MA named after places in England.
What an outstanding vid guys, ty. Loaded with history and food for thought!
Another wonderful day out ! Thank you both .
Hello Freddie I'm delighted to see you and Monica back in England and again making excellent videos. This video like all the previous videos had my attention all the way through. Just one thing though. Could you please describe the motorcycle gear you are wearing just like you used to in the earlier videos. I don't know if other people are interested like me or if it's me being a bit sad but I like the gear that you wear and would like to know which brands to look for the next time I need some gear. I look forward to the video. Thanks
Hi Martin,
Absolutely- I’ll start adding this back into the videos again🙂
Lovely sceneries , hot bike, good songs and also cool knowledges ! Can't ask more ! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼What a trip !
I’m so glad you forgot your disc-lock! Don’t feel so bad having done it twice myself 🤦🏻♀️
Well done Freddie, Monika, possibly the best one yet and that is saying something!
Hugely appreciated, thanks Denis!🙂
Excellent video Freddie and Monika!
I believe that your starter switch just needs a shot of contact cleaner, maybe clean the contacts with fine sandpaper or something similar and Bob's your uncle!
Great interesting vlog adventure Freddie & Monika👍 i once stopped a guy riding off with his disc lock & fluorescent tubing still attached,i couldn't believe he hadn't noticed, but he was defo grateful,if a bit embarrassed, safe riding👍
Only a biker would have such an eye to notice this. You probably saved him a chunk of money there, Adrian!
Done the same with a week old bike in a bike shop car park, yes in front or about 50 people, fortunately no real damage, just to my pride....
It’s a painful experience (both for pride and the horrible metal on metal crack)😆
That was great. I am a big fan of the Witchfinder General film and I do recommend you go to Lavenham where it was shot. Loved the history in this video and especially enjoyed the Electric Palace at the end. I used to be a film projectionist so this was fascinating. Thanks for a brilliant Sunday morning.
I’ll find this film online and watch this. Thanks Robert🙂
Thank you
Freddie & Monica. We thoroughly enjoyed this presentation. The content, photography and style were exceptional. Well done.

Sending all my beat up in Cheshire🙂👋
Really enjoying your tour as an Englishman having lived in New Zealand for many years, great style and taste in music
Thank you
Same here with the disc lock, now i use the reminder cable that mine came with and hey presto, no more forgetting!
That Lea Francis can in fact seat four; the 'boot' lid opens to form the backrest of another pair of seats (known as dicky seats) - note the two steps on the back mudguard to allow passengers to climb in!
We call them rumble or mother in-law seats in the U.S. Nice car!
I can’t believe I overlooked this🤯 That’s brilliant!
That pattern of body is called a ‘doctor’s coupé’ ! I presume it keeps the children and infectious patients out in cold!
@@ianseddon9347 Doctor's Coupe is a term usually used for a fixed-head coupe (usually without the dickey seat but with a rear compartment for the doctor's bags), this is a drophead-coupe, sometimes referred to as an all-weather coupe.
I also noted the UK label on the back rather than the old GB. That car clearly gets regular and recent usage on the continent too.
Thank you for sharing this with us. Hope you two made it home safely too.
Taken me back to the 70’s I went to secondary school in manningtree thanks Freddie 👍
Great video. Loved that Lea Francis, it's actually a 2+2 the boot opens up to reveal the seats.
Another fantastic video Freddie, love the History.
As for the Key 🤭don't worry Fella, I won't even tell you the stupid things I've done. We have all been there.
I always use a lanyard on my bike hooked round my clutch lever to remind me the locks fitted.
Wonderful mix of history, views and petrolheads! One of your best yet, well done Freddie and Monika. PS: yes I have also moved off with my disc lock still on…..
Really glad you enjoyed it, thanks Stephen🙂 I’m very glad to say this does seem to be fairly common🔐🏍
Freddy thank you for another stunning episode. Monica what spectacular Videography!
One of the best videos on the topic of the Manningtree Witches (who recently had a memorial opened). Good work Freddie!!! 05:37 Behind you there is the Red Lion pub where Hopkin's first victim was allegedly dragged out by her hair. Elizabeth Clarke was 80 years old and crippled.
You must have loved riding those bends from Mistley to Harwich.
Some good historical knowledge we never learned this in school Sir,fredrick you two always know where they serve the best food and who picks the backing tracks 🎶
I genuinely had no idea about any of this until researching the are- I couldn’t believe the amount of history in the area🤯🇺🇸
Great Sunday morning viewing as always guys
Come on Freddie it's about time you give the bike some TLC
This is true- tomorrow is tlc day!🧼🏍
what a lovely episode, thank you Freddie and Monica :)
Hi Freddy, you need to get a disc lock reminder one of those spring cords from disc lock to Handel bars to remind you have left your dislock on . And Freddy you need to get your electrics shorted and stop using the screwdriver to start the bike
What an interesting excursus you did ! As a former teacher of history I enjoyed it very much! First I saw that terrible pond where " swimming test" took place. Thanks a lot!
Awee what a brilliant Vlog you two and amazing team effort
Can’t wait to go there and sit on that balcony ❤
Great history and amazing presentation
Love it
Poor Bonny hope you have a new battery 🔋 soon you deserve a new machine really, I’m sure you’ll be getting one at one point
Have a great week Freddie and Monika
😊😊😊😊
As an American, that was a fantastic video, very informative and incredibly interesting. Thank you for a sneak peak into the genesis of the colonies and eventual states.
Fascinating content Freddie, boosting the Essex tourist board , with the wonderful Art-Nouveau cinema, I have an identical illuminated Smiths clock ( 39.05 ) bought off eBay a few years ago !.The Lea-Francis car is what is known as a Doctors Coupe and the ' boot ' is actually a dickey seat for 2 extra passengers seated outside - note the steps on the left back .
A really fascinating look, a superb piece of work, well done Freddie and Monika for sharing
Hi Freddie, Nespresso important tip: you MUST leave the machine empty of capsules after you use them. Otherwise there are risks to break the closing system. 😉
By the way I have also tried to run my bike with the locking on and of course I fell off…😢
I had no idea, thank you Santiago!☕️
@@FreddieDobbs excuse me one question mate: I am following your advice and I'm going to buy a pair of TCX Blend boots. I can still find the original ones though there is more offer of the TCX Blend 2 WP but my question is if you think I should go more for the TCX Blend 2 WP or the original TCX Blend? Is the difference worth it? I can find them at 170€ whether the TCX Blend 2 WP cost around 210€. Many thanks
Hey guys...thanks for being human!! And...a great vid. Really great actually. Just getting better and better. And you started at excellent. Soooo...more please. But take your lock off first dudes 😁 Travel and ride safe. People here in YT land love you. And love from NZ as always.
Another great video both and very interesting history. I cracked a front mud guard on a street triple once riding off with a disc lock on in a family dinner car park 😩. Since then I clip my ignition key to the disc lock key until I’ve removed the lock and the ignition key is then taken off the clip. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
So painful! This is my turning point to finally learning my lesson
Just along from The Pier is Trinity house which is the admin HQ of the UK Lighthouse keepers. Keeping our coastline safe for ships since 1514! It has a very fascinating history which very few are aware of..
On speaking to a few of the old boys, Harwich used to be thriving bustle and a real busy area but since the port died the town died with it and perhaps has a bit of end of the line turn the lights off feel (or at least it did when I used to visit regularly ) I haven't been there for 7 years ish but it looks like The Pier has been referb'd since then so hopefully the area is getting 'leisure time ' investment. It's certainly a quaint undervalued seaside town.
Ironically a highly frustratingly torturous 6 hours journey from my then home in Newbury to Harwich was the final straw which made me relocate to Tenerife. !
Many thanks for a small trip down memory lane, a joy as always. 🙂
Thanks for sharing this Richard- I’ll be reading about the Lighthouse Keeps tonight. The history of the area is really incredible and it used to be very prosperous I believe. I think they’re now in the process of re-inventing the town as a tourist spot🙂
I hope you’re getting somewhere with shipping the Triumph, and that the current storm isn’t/wasn’t too bad!
@@FreddieDobbs re the Triumph yes managed to get transport down to 1.3k which isn't too bad all things considered & should be picked up in a couple of weeks once a new suitable kph Speedo and headlight arrives at St Ives to accompany the bike on it's journey. 🤞
which, if I knew you were in Cornwall I would have sneaked a cheeky ask and got you to test ride it for me as it currently lives only about 20 mins from your parents place! 😂
anyhoo the storm seems nothing more than solid rain which has lasted 2 full days and may stretch to monday. nowhere near the cyclone weather what they were predicting tbh
more of "the garden needed it" type of few days 😀
Oh, I've have done that too a few times, but no battery fell out, ha. I have not tried to start without key though, thanks for the tip. 😁 Must have been decaf coffee you had in the lovely cottage. :) Great video you two.
I think you’re right!!🤣☕️
Hey Freddie, do you think when the pilgrims left for America they remembered to put the key in the ignition, take off the disk lock and keep the battery charged.
🤣🤣
So much in this video I liked - one of your best yet. Informative yet very funny. I particularly liked the detailed history tour and the immediate switch to you admiring the rat three wheeler! Great cinematography too particularly the holiday cottage seemed like 8k detail
This is unusual story's...what a Sad time they had been through....
I said it before..this channel is Unique ...💯
Thank you Freddie.. this episode was a little Sad one to me...but I value it, maybe one day you'll find way to write ✍️ all the traveling story's in a book 👍🏻
Keep it up 🥇
In aviation, things which MUST come off before flight have a wide red ribbon of fabric attached
which flutters in the breeze and is obvious and easily visible to flight and ground crews.
Amazing video once again, keep these coming 👏
Love the videography....class 👍
Thanks!🙂
Great video as usual! Also just an fyi, not sure if you are aware, this video is not coming up as recently uploaded on your channel. Meaning it is not immediately showing up when you enter your page. The only reason I found it, is because I was looking through season three and saw that this was a few hours old. Anyways keep up the great content! Cheers from Boston, MA!
Delighted you enjoyed it Kyle! Well my mind is blown- I have no idea how the video popped up for you before it was set to go live! You had early access my friend!🙂 And from Boston too- sending you all my best!👋🇺🇸
I love the music you chose too blend with your videos 👍🏾💯
I’ve done the whole disc lock thing whilst waving goodbye to work colleagues one night, they still say watching me fall off was the funniest things they’ve seen 10 years on, rotters😂

@@FreddieDobbs I passed and freedom is mine. 😉
Another super video, really enjoying all that you two make. You didn't detail what the main course was at lunch at the Pier. If you did I apologise but we've watched it twice and didn't pick up on what it was. We've eaten in Harwich many times en route to getting the overnight boat to the Hook but never at the Pier. To be honest we are usually so rushed we normally end up at Skippers on Garland Rd. Super fish and chips. Not in the same league but it would hold us until we got back to the UK. We've been doing the same trip now for over 40 years. By motorcycle and by car. Keep up the good work.
There used to be a cinema local to me in Leeds called Hyde park picture house. All original interior. They'd play many new films not in the big venues some by local film makers and lots of old classics. Both fantastic and crucial to keep independent cinemas and theatres going new and old! These places help make a community.
I put the little pouch for the disk lock over the ignition so I cannot put the key in until I remove the pouch, which reminds me to remove the disk lock.
My old yamaha bike does have those rough starts aswell. I need to make absolutely sure I turn the key with the lights off, most of the time thatll do the trick.
The Bonnie has to go Freddie, it's driving you round the twist 🤣
Great video as ever.
Love the local history (not that I'm local to Essex / Suffolk), beautifully filmed by Monika. Trying very hard not to be patronising (and failing!), you may want to consider a disk lock with a brake lever cable for your next purchase...
I do believe it’s time for a new motorcycle. You have put that one through a LOT
This is very true
