      This is true, but it is still impressive that in 2016, the cheapest Tesla you could buy was the Model S at ~$80,000. Now it’s half the price to get an actually compelling, long-range EV. This will approximately half in price again in 2023-2024, but the used car market will become robust for Model 3s, Mustang Mach-Es and the like, which will also improve EV prices for the masses. The numbers show that people don’t want Nissan LEAFs and Chevy Bolts. They want vehicles like the Model 3 and Y.

    Love the EV talk on these podcasts. Just a couple notes from someone who has been in the industry for a long time: (1) when you look at concept cars you have to remember that they are inherently aspirational and unrealistic. The goal is for designers to push the boundaries with the expectation that few of those features would be in the car. If they could do it all today, then it shouldn't be a concept, they should just make it. (2) The reason Toyota is so behind on EVs is their bet on hydrogen. Japanese automakers have long felt that hydrogen power was a better solution than electric. This hasn't caught on and the infrastructure to support hydrogen is essentially non-existent. Look up the Toyota Mirai or Honda Clarity to see their ideal future for the industry

      I looked at trading in and getting a prime but at the increased cost I could get the hybrid or standard model with a higher trim level. I was also told that if the battery pack goes in a prime it is 4-5k to replace. With rental car cost and labor cost along with battery shortages that could total out the car if it’s 1-2 years old.

    42:33 yeah I feel Spotify could do a lot more with recommendations. Best example is, when I search for a song and play it, it’ll keep playing related songs, that’s great. But if I search another song and add to queue, it will just add that one song and carry on with the original list of songs, ideally I’d like it to refresh the songs based on the all the songs I’ve manually put in the queue.

    TH-cam has replaced television for me, which is interesting since I grew up with TV. What I'm hoping for is Google to make YT Premium more affordable and consolidated. $12.99 is kinda pricey for only YT and not with YT TV. I don't really need YT Music because that's how I use YT along with a touch-protector. The only drawback is I still get the ads. I'd like the European version of the paid to come to the US, because that's a reasonable price I'd pay to eliminate ads.

      @@vanderumd11 This is a bad strategy. Whatever battery that comes out at scale which could be better than current battery tech, companies that have been developing and optimizing their battery management software and overall EV prowess will have far better products than Toyota. This will be especially true for Tesla, Rivian, and even VW.
      Also, Tesla’s 4680 batteries are quite revolutionary. Solid-state batteries are not necessary for high performance, long-range, and safe EVs with the innovations that Tesla brought to those cells. Other automakers will end up using 4680 cells, as battery suppliers like LG and Samsung SDI will also produce 4680 cells.

    Regarding algorithms, and specifically with Spotify, so I do this thing with Spotify where, at the beginning of each year, I start a new annual playlist, and when I go to hit "Like" on a song that I am particularly enjoying, I've made it a habit to also add that song to my annual playlist for that year. Now, this is kind of tedious to do, and you might ask, "Why would you do that? Spotify already has a 'playlist' of literally every song you have ever liked, why make a separate personal playlist like that?" I'm actually not exactly sure what my initial motivation to start doing this was (perhaps I didn't realize at the time that I could just look back at all of my previously liked videos, lol, Idk), but for me, ever since I started doing that, I feel like my Discover Weekly suggestions have been noticeably improved.
    Maybe this is all just in my head and I just didn't notice how good the suggestions were until I started deliberately adding them individually to a separate playlist, but a big part of me thinks that Spotify's algorithm kind of lacks useful points of metadata most of the time. So when I listen to a song that I really like a lot, the algorithm is able to see effectively a second data point representing my interest in that specific song, not just the single data point of "User has 'Liked' this song", but it's like I'm able to "double like" a song by showing further engagement via adding that song to a personal playlist.
    This feels kind of dumb to phrase it this way, but I honestly feel like Spotify's suggestions would improve if the user had some easy way to effectively "double like" or "love" a song when they really enjoy it, such as a long press on the "Like" button instead of just a tap or something. As you guys note in this episode, Spotify really does kind of lack a lot of the engagement fidelity that a platform like TikTok, or even a platform like TH-cam, has available to their algorithm, so I really think it would be improved by giving more granular ways of engaging with songs to the end user.

    To Andrew’s qualms with the $100 refundable deposits. The reason(s) for them is quite simple. Currently, there’s over 1 million reservations for Cybertruck. Once Cybertruck production begins, Tesla won’t be making 1 million within a year, not even close. They have to ramp up production, so the $100 is a reservation deposit. We’re you the 10,000th person to put down that deposit? Cool, then you’ll get the ~10,000th Cybertruck. It’s going to take a while for Tesla to build all of those reservation Cybertrucks.
    These reservations don’t happen with gas cars because for the most part, gas cars aren’t build to order, whereas build to order is Tesla’s business model. Also, for example, if Toyota were to announce a new ICE vehicle model, production ramp wouldn’t take long. ICE technology is extremely common and old, and there’s a ton of production lines for that technology. The Cybertruck (and some other EVs) is being built with new technology. Something to think about.

    31:50 this fact always surprises me. How do Americans expect everyone to use the same operating system, and do you all stop talking to people if they don't have iMessage?!
    The main purpose of a messaging app is to connect you to as many people as possible and making a proprietary messaging service just kills this.

    • @danielwilson6323
      @danielwilson6323 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I live here, we use SMS for any cross platform stuff. I don't really know why, but I'm guessing it's because the US got free unlimited texting on a lot of phone plans very early on in the cell phone age. So everyone just got accustomed to SMS, and once habits are built they're hard to change. I use Signal and FB messenger too for certain people, but the most universal way is definitely SMS still

    • @richardparadox163
      @richardparadox163 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As an American, it’s because unlike in other countries most people *do* use the same operating system, since iPhones originated here (they caught on first in the American market and gained the reputation as the default smartphone, by the time iPhones reached other countries they were expensive and Android had a foothold so things were competitive) and are cheaper than in a lot of countries. 52% of Americans are on iOS (the highest percentage of any country besides Japan). In all other countries Android is the most popular operating system. Additionally, the 52% figure is for the whole population. Anecdotally, within certain socioeconomic groups (the lower middle class all the way to the upper class, from ages 16-49, living in cities) iOS is even more popular, approaching 100%. In America, only the poor, technology illiterate/apathetic people (the elderly, immigrants), and tech enthusiasts (the kind of people who read tech reviews and build their own PC’s), use Android. Since most personal textual communication occurs within one’s socioeconomic group, this creates a network effect that further incentivizes people to get/stick with iOS as well as it being a cultural/status indicator.
      Additionally, as others have mentioned, unlimited SMS messaging has been free as part of standard phone plans in the US since (I don’t remember when, but) I think around or even before when WhatsApp was released. Hence there was no need to adopt WhatsApp, since any message that didn’t send as an iMessage was seamlessly sent as a text message for free (albeit as a basic message without the features of iMessage or WhatsApp). So to answer your question we don’t stop talking to people on another service because we text them within iMessage. People will also download WhatsApp on their iPhone to text with friends/family in other countries if needed, especially immigrants with iPhones (keeping in mind most of America is fairly insular and so people have no need to communicate with people in other countries where people might use Android). On college/university campuses, students will typically download GroupMe for cross platform communication in large messaging groups.That said, because iMessage is the default within certain socioeconomic groups, and because as mentioned certain groups of people tend to use android (the poor, elderly, immigrants, nerds), and because it is inconvenient to lose out on added iMessage features or have to switch to another app, there definitely is a stigma (conscious or subconsciously) against people with the dreaded “green bubble”.
      For example, my brother had a Pixel 2 because quote “F##k Apple”, also he liked the G-suite integration for school. But last year after it died he switched to iPhone, because it was more convenient in college where everyone uses iPhone and he didn’t want to be the green bubble. Additionally, I was listening to an interview podcast with a bunch of 20 something girls and they were asked what they though when a guy from a dating app texted them and it was a green bubble, and they *all* said it was an instant turn off, since they assumed he was poor/weird.

    Concept car is a CONCEPT, general vision for the future, aspirations, it should be unrealistic. They allow designers to get wild. They show customers what will be the future design language. That is all.

    How is youtube even compared to tiktok. The only thing they have in common is they’re considered social platforms. Passed that the content, the demographics, and engagement is all different so…… i’ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars a year marketing for different businesses and they don’t perform the same, because are used for a completely different needs.

    Right now in the UK you can buy the MG5 for £25k. 250 actual miles of range. It's a practical large wagon. It's got a 60kWh battery. It has an interior straight out of 2008. These Chinese companies that are bringing electric cars to Europe right now that impreesive in £ v range are going to hit that $25k 300Mile sweet spot way before Tesla or any of the big car companies gets close.
    VW group already makes a car that uses your phone instead of a central screen, The Seat Mii (also available as an EV), a tiny city car. It does have a normal speedo though in the usual spot.
    Toyota already sells an EV, the hydrogen powered Mirai, onto it's second generation recently. Fuel Cell cars are still EV's. They're a viable way to live for some people who live and work around the Hydrogen stations of london or California. Gen1 came out in 2014. They also sell BEV cars through Lexus, though that's pretty half hearted at the moment.
    Love this podcast! You guys are so cool
