Played this all the time back in the day. Best score was just over 300,000. If I had back all the quarters I dropped in this game, Bill Gates would have nothing on me.
I don't know what the record is for this game but in 1981 I managed a game room in Logan Utah and on a day off I played this game for six hours and twenty minutes while friend fed me corn dogs. I was still playing when (no lie) a small puff of smoke shot out and it powered down. If you have never seen a game go beyond one hour then you wouldn't believe the speed of the missiles and the neon colors of the screens. Most people play this game resting one finger on each button but you can't do that after a hour or so. First wave use your index finger and empty the left or right missile bank then pick off anything missed with center (faster) button, then repeat. Six hours twenty minutes. World record I'm sure.
When I was 11 years old in 1980 I played this game from open till close. Magic fountain in the north Bronx .205th street . Owner Marty would give me 5 bucks to not play lol . This game was addicting as were most video games when your that age. Good times. I’m sure I could have beat many a people back in those days. Could probably still right now. 1980 forver
I'm not sure what tool-assisted means in this context, but the aiming looks unnaturally accurate, to me. But it isn't much faster than what I did back in the day. I generally would sacrifice a city or two once every level or three, from level 12 up, on the way to rolling the machine at 810,000 points. At that point (30 to 40 minutes after the start), some counter would overflow and you would be credited with about 50 bonus cities. At that point you could walk away and take a 15 minute bathroom break and/or lunch break, come back, and continue to play at pretty much the same difficulty till you reached around 2.5 million points, at which point the difficulty would return to the beginning. I always tried to play as close to 810,000 points without going over and then let it end. Forty minutes was always enough to satisfy me, and I'd have a high score that would last till the machine was turned off. I never met anyone as good as I was, but I wasn't playing in a hotbed of arcade players and I know there were any number of tournament players whom I couldn't hold a candle to. I never got to play in tournament mode (no bonus city every 10,000 points), but I suspect I'd have difficulty getting past level 25, while some of these guys could play for hours in tournament mode.
Tool-assisted means a human is mathematically designing inputs for the controller to perform. The aiming looks unnaturally accurate because it is: the author of the controller input recording effectively has perfect precognition and aim.
I was never good at MC, but the guys i watched that were wouldn't really aim, they would roll the track ball from upper right corner to the left side at specific angles and time the missile launches to basically make an impenetrable sky of explosions. @William Barnes So tool assisted means a computer playing a computer then? Where the only human input was to program a 'robot' device to do the input? Fun?
I used to be able to play the game until you got endless cities and then it would re-set back to the first board eventually. I never played it in tournament mode where you don't get bonus cities at 10,000 points. That would be tough. It's also very difficult to play the game when the bonus city comes at 12,000 point intervals.
man you are gorgeous! I was playing the game back in 1981 (when I was young..) I never made it beyound stage 12 . Thanks for giving me the chance to see whats beyond. Up to what stage could you go ?
+Jo Jojo I used to play this every Sunday back in '81 at the local 7-11 with this other guy I'd meet there who loved the game also. It just keeps repeating once you hit the 6X level through the different color schemes. My high score was over 500,000, but my partner was even better. Once he finally hit 800,000, at which point you could never die. It would keep giving you free cities forever (or at least until first he walked away, and then I walked away). I don't know if it finally gave up or someone unplugged the machine to get it to start over! That said, I've never seen anyone play this as precisely as the video here. Either this guy has cat-like reflexes or something fishy is going on. Seeing him do a cross-screen Omega or Alpha base shot on a smart bomb, perfectly? That's insane. I could only nail the smart bombs with the Delta base.
@Mark Johnson, Once you get a score of over 500,000, you've seen and dealt with pretty much every trick the machine can throw at you. Things just get a bit faster and more devious. Then it's only a matter of practice before you can beat the machine (810,000) at will.
Can't resist answering after four years. Keep hands moist, use palm and base of fingers on the ball and move the entire arm. Well, that's how a human does it. This video shows a computer doing most of the aiming.
Israel's Iron Dome is the real life version of this, but the computer does the aiming and firing. So cool to see how technology progresses!
apparently the game was released with two different track ball speeds. one is double as fast
Furthest I ever got as a kid was the magenta-sky level. Neat to see the rest.
上手いなあ✨弾幕が的確❗️
It's tool assisted.
It's great to finally see the attackers take an utter pasting.
my childhood is deposited in that game

You and John Conner can save us from terminators.
I came looking for someone playing Missile Command, I found someone operating Iron Dome.
う、上手すぎる😄
Dang, TAS made this look easy, when this game is actually very difficult.
I owned a missile command machine -- Eventually i got so good i could go eat dinner and come back to the game still playing
Awesome, i love this arcade.

I never got far enough to see the little flashing dots; are they bombs?
@Thornbloom yes they are!
Dammmn! Lightening speed and so accurate. I just got Arcade1up and can't pass the pink screen.

how a missile defense system would actually work in a nuclear war scenario due to AI
nuclear war would switch to nuclid war, making territory uninhabitable with radionuclids
How does one tas in mame?
Auto aimming by calculations of Lua script.Rerecording count = 0.
nice. what emulator did you use? I would love to make TASes of other arcade games.

+Mark Johnson this is a TAS. he went frame by frame to get the perfect game.
