Fun fact: Brendan Gaughan had a inflatable Spongebob in his truck during this race, there isn't many photos or good camera views of it, the best glimpse of it is at 1:01:25 you can see it peek over the dash right after he gets clipped and wrecked
I was at this race with my dad. 8th grade year. By far the best Homestead truck race to this date. Track surface was brand new and the track had tons of grip on the new banks. Freaking amazing race from start to finish. I remember Ted Musgrave got screwed there at the end. Very controversial penalty.
Mike Helton the president of nascar says Travis congratulations on winning the 2003 nascar craftsman truck series championship! You will be a great champion! Congratulations!
Who else thinks Smith was trying to take out Brendan the whole race? Proof: When Walker first "slid" in turn 4 early on, he tried to keep his truck high to collect Brendan, but gravity won, and Brendan got by safely. Then, later on, just after Walker hit the wall just before the 10 "lost it" and finally got him, Tyler tried to cut down in turn 1, and almost hit the 61, thinking it was the 62. And also, after Marty hooked Brendan, Marty tried to cut dead left and take Kvapil out, too. (If not for his truck's steering being broken after hitting Brendan, judging by how close he got to Travis, he probably would have been successful. Jim didn't take out the 46 because Morgan-Dollar didn't enter an extra truck, and Dennis drove smart and was able to avoid all of Jim's attempted-title-fixing shenanigans.) Jim was trying the whole race to take both Brendan AND Travis out to make things easier for Ted. It almost worked, but sadly for him, Ted would end up choking the title away on a later restart, rendering all of Jim's sabotage attempts moot.
Bundy87Fan I always wonder if Musgrave knew what Smith was going to pull. Entering extra trucks wasn’t a red flag, Hendrick and RCR did that for Gordon and Dale, but did Musgrave know the extras were going to take out his opponents? And if he did he probably couldn’t have done anything about it. I feel like Jim Smith put Musgrave in a really awkward position where he became a villain because of someone else’s shenanigans
I’m almost certain that Smith was trying the whole day. I had always thought that it was just a horrible coincidence when the 10 took out Gaughan. But then at some point years later I got to see those other incidents that you talk about, which raised some undeniable red flags for me.
Not just Brendan but the entire competition but the Dumbass didnt get away with it and it cost him the championship with Mustgrave getting blzck flagged and gave Travis Kvapil the championship
Were there any rules about leader of field not brake checking before getting green flag or cars in line keeping a certain distance? I believe those rules are in affect now. Looking at 1:30:38-45 it looked like as the field was accelerating, Setzer did suddenly slow down before flooring it again. Because of all the teammate shenanigans in this race, it seemed going to a 4-way tie and best finisher wins was a good move.
I'll say this though: based on all the driver's finishing positions and how close it was on points, Travis Kvapil was Brendan Gaughan's closest competitor all year. If anyone deserved it, it's Travis... I think that NASCAR knew, that if they withdrew the black flag on Ted Musgrave and gave him that championship, it would've been tarnished. The fans would've thrown stuff at the team, and Brendan Gaughan would have tarnished it by showing up on the stage. It would have been a riot... NASCAR had to make the right decision, based on those assumptions, so upholding the black flag on him passing was the right call...
@RaleighTheUmbreonVHS We all knew that they were gonna boo if Brendan didn't win the Championship regardless... and based on the huge controversy by Ultra Motorsports, I think that Travis would rather be booed than having it be a riot. IF TED WON THE TITLE, a riot would have taken place
I don't like the call. A black flag for "the act of passing" before the start/finish line looks dopey. A rule is a rule, but I didn't like it when they hit Brian Vickers with it at Texas earlier that year, and I didn't like it when Musgrave got it. IndyCar does it right (don't pass before the green flag waves for the restart; start/finish line is irrelevant). Despite the penalty, and Travis having just one win, he had a terrific season. Incredibly consistent, and closing in on the leader in the final laps several times.

Like any owner, add up some more trucks to make some artificial attrition amongst themselves. Junior Johnson did it. Richard Childress did it. Rick Hendrick did it. There's ways to sway the pendulum onto your side without the wrecking.

Crazy that this is the very first race since they added banking To Homestead and this was won by one of my all time favorites Bobby Hamilton
Lmao seeing Jimmy Smith celebrating, the only one who is celebrating in that pit box was and still is hilarious
1:12:05 legendary soundbite
Reminder of the recent race of martinsville

Makes me wonder why didn't Jim Smith get a big-ass fine for possible race manipulation.

Only race for Matt Crafton in 98 truck and last race for ThorSport of his 1st spell.
Excellent commentary. I miss that.
JesusHippie it’s amazing how much more intelligent these broadcasts sound without Mikey, even DW is way better
bruh any broadcast with Rick Allen sucked
This was the first year with the new banking, from the inaugural race here until 2002 it had no banking

59:37 - Brendan Gaughan's championship hopes go up in flames.
That was a racing incident. Glad to see that he was OK.
1:28:00 - Final restart with Musgrave's big blooper.
1:11:47 - Brendan Gaughan expresses frustration LIKE A BOSS!
Jimmy Smith can kiss my ass!
Most controversial race in NASCAR HISTORY! Not just Cup, Xfinity, or Trucks... IN HISTORY. I'm glad karma struck Ultra Motorsports
1:29:39 😂😂😂😂😂 sike on Jim Smith .....yes what a day you didn't win the title
1:41:53 We have a word. Ted gets black flagged. Travis wins the championship!

Just finished this season on NR2003 driving the #2.
I did too driving Bobby Hamilton's number #4
Brendan was taken out under caution!
OK Speed. I'll say this. If Ultra Motorsports didn't intentionally wreck Brendan Gaughan, then why did they add 3 trucks last minute?
to try to

i really liked rick doing trucks, but haven't liked him doing cup. go figure.

I lost a lot of respect for Musgrave after that interview. Bad form.
Good morning
