One of the great things about general aviation is the freedom and autonomy that still exists in the endeavor. Much like motorcycling, it seems to be one of the few pursuits left that allows for real, personal, risk assessment. I was going to pass judgment on the decision to fly the bird with that type of known discrepancy (not done in commercial aviation). However, that would be counter to the premise that personal risk taking is essential to the preservation of personal freedom. I'm glad to see people taking personal risks, and living life fully, in this modern world of safety activism😷. Good show!🇺🇸
"personal risk taking is essential to the preservation of personal freedom". Exactly, an excellent point well made, which I think resonates with all motorcyclists. Great comment, OrangeCrate.
Really enjoyed this one,had it all !!!. Adventure, drama, weather and Mrs flyer really growing into her co star role on the channel.Bring on the Goldwing 👍
I knew we had more than a motorcycle connection. I have done some flying myself in the past on small aircraft in Holland. A C172 out of Schiphol airport to the various small airfields around the Netherlands. This brings me back to these good old times. Map, headset gps and mark one eyeball. We have got lots in common my man. Love what your doing. Keep posting both. Motorcycle and flying! Best regards Norman 😊👍🏻
Great to see another flying video. I've flown the Piper Warrior belonging to a friend of mine, a couple of times. It's interesting to see the differences in flying in Europe as compared to Canada where I live. We use atmospheric pressure as measured from the airport you are departing, landing on etc. ( hpa in Canada) inches of mercury in the rest of North America ( the US). It is also neat to see the number of actual air fields in the UK ( actual grass fields) , we have mainly paved runways in the US and Canada. By the way I'm a big fan of your motorcycle reviews as well.
You know if my bike stalled when slowing up I'd be nervous to go riding it in case it packed it in completely. And there you are doing it in a plane! 😳😁
Great video, as always! The mention of the Piper Cherokee really brought back memories. I used to enjoy flying a Cherokee in the late 1970s. Later on I flew the Piper Tomahawk, which I didn't care for much, as it had too many reliability issues (like the time the magneto failed on a short field takeoff, that sort of stuff). I still fondly remember my little 1966 Cessna 150, N3245J, my first airplane. Don't fly any more, rather I enjoy riding around on my BMW R1250GSA, which gives lots of thrills per adventure! Cheers!
Thank you so much for the warts and all video!! stuff happens and as you say, the cut out is only on idle. Reasonable risk assessment in my opinion. What a great flight though. No, I'm not jealous. Not at all. Never!😉
Shame you had to cut the flight short, i was really enjoying this. As someone who works in the aviation industry, i can fully understand your decision to return to base, if the prop stops upon landing, and it`s getting worse, it`s not beyond the realms of reality, that the problem could manifest itself in flight. Good to know the hotel can re-arrange your booking.
Nice to see a different video. The only time I've been up in a plane was just after my cousin's wedding. My uncle was a flying instructor up at ( I think) teeside airport, he took myself and my parents up for an hour or so around Middlesbrough etc, I ended up in the front seat and flying the plane, (I assume it's the same as the one in your video, a Piper warrior) for most of the time. Very enjoyable for a 15 year old lad and gave me great bragging rights at school
Trying to get my head around the logic here - not safe to continue with journey but safe to return? Maybe I'm missing something? Great video anyway! Cheers, Jon.
What you didn’t see on the video is the long conversation I had on the telephone with engineering at White Waltham. The problem only occurred at idle and the only time the aircraft is near idle is on the approach to land, I was happy to take the risk to land back at White Waltham knowing it is a big grass airfield that I could land in the middle of if required, however I wasn’t happy to fly the aircraft around Cornwall including long over sea sections. This was my logic and thinking. Thanks for watching and for stopping by.

Having done a trial flight from the same airfield (WW) on a red letter day, I can say light aircraft are not for me. It was like flying in Robin Reliant, the doors and windows flapping.. Sorry that the stalking issue stopped you going further, I guess adjusting the idle speed is a bit more in depth than on my old pre injection Honda's and Yamaha's; it's definitely best not to take chances.
Yes Michael, the engine stopping at idle wasn’t ideal given I was planning a number of separate flights over water that weekend, I judged it safe enough to fly back to White Waltham where the field is large and I could’ve landed anyway had the engine stopped on approach once again. Thanks for watching stay tuned for the next episode soon!

Sorry the flying part of your trip was cut short, but always better to be safe than sorry. As far as watching you fly it's good with me. I had my pilots license long before my motorcycle endorsement. I worked at two FBOs (Fixed Base Operation) when going to college. I racked my brain trying to remember seeing another aircraft with your issue. Alas nothing came out of my memory banks. Only thing that popped up in my mind was the mixture control in the carburetor was sticking. Even though you adjusted the mixture knob to full it was still running lean effectively starving the engine at the lower altitude. Other than that, another great video. Except now I have a craving for a big piece of cake. Until the next video have fun and stay safe. P.S. Mrs. Flyer appears to be a great co-pilot, always worth keeping around.
100%!! Strangely enough, when I spoke to Keith after the issue occurred, he told me that when something similar happened to him and he reduced the mixture to very lean the engine restarted! Go figure!?
I agree it could just be the idle setting, but it could also be a blocked/partial blocked pilot jet in the carb. Being the smallest jet, it will clog first and result in poor idling but no problems when on anything over 1/4 throttle as the main jet comes into play
Thanks for another flying blog Mr (and Mrs) Flyer. bion I had been meaning to ask about your Mrs going flying with you. Glad that you're safe after the "hiccup" with the plane and that you salvaged your holiday. 🛩 - Sorry about the emoji it was this or a rocket :>)
Hi Andy, I happen to share both your passions. I start to think Perranporth is jinxed. We had to leave a DV-20 behind there as one brake calliper fell apart during taxi. Ruined some of our weekend as well. 🙂 Keep up the sound decision making.
AHH I will never tire of these airborne adventures as I love both flying and biking. Strangely, my friends flexwing microlight also has same issue. Fine up there, low idling taxiing apparently. Let us know if you find out issue. Thank you for an amazing video and although I love flying, I also love biking and looking forward to p 2. 10 out of 10 both👍👍👍

Hope you made it bk safe looking forward to seeing you trip on the new Goldwing 👍👍👍👍
Stay tuned to find out if we lived or not!
Hi Andy, I happen to share both your passions. I start to think Perranporth is jinxed. We had to leave a DV-20 behind there as one brake calliper fell apart during taxi. Ruined some of our weekend as well. 🙂 Keep up the sound decision making.
Cheers Peter
AHH I will never tire of these airborne adventures as I love both flying and biking. Strangely, my friends flexwing microlight also has same issue. Fine up there, low idling taxiing apparently. Let us know if you find out issue.
Thank you for an amazing video and although I love flying, I also love biking and looking forward to p 2. 10 out of 10 both👍👍👍
Thank you Ian, glad you like these videos!
Make such a nice change these flying videos, shame the weekend went pear shaped,me id still be on the train. 😉
