Taking Power Away From Objects | How to Stop Impulse Shopping

  • As I've gradually journeyed toward minimalism, I've developed an awareness of how my own insecurities drive me to purchase items that I don't really love or need. Objects hold a lot of power in our lives--how can we take that power back and reduce our shopping behaviors? Here are some ideas that have worked for me. I talk about the psychology of shopping, specific strategies to use in the moment when you're tempted to shop, as well as how to shift gears to move toward minimalism.

As I was watching this video I couldn't help but admire your jumper and think 'I would love a jumper like that'. I used your techniques to think about why I shouldn't look for one rather than should and the first thing I said to myself is that we have different skin and hair tones and colourings and while it looks amazing on you, it would wash me out. I looked in my own wardrobe at what I already have and realised that I don't need another jumper. Your techniques definitely work!

Your math trick of thinking about purchases diminishing your savings reminds me of Benjamin Franklin's “A penny saved is two pence clear.”

I started to add things to my Amazon basket and leave them there for a few days. When I went back and looked I realised I didn't want them anymore. It has made me realise how much money I have been wasting.

I actually do put things in my basket but then I close the website and walk away thinking that I will revisit the next day and do the purchase. Most of the time I forget about it and other times I decide not to buy this/these iem(s) after all!!!

Woah, love this. You’re really leveraging your PhD as it relates to consumerism and I love that take on minimalism! I have such a bad habit of buying something because it looked great on someone or it was a recommended “find”. I love certain TH-camrs for their essence but the “sponsored” stuff really triggers me to buy. I wish TH-camrs didn’t have to do this but I understand that it’s a way to monetize their effort poured into a channel. I will start using the “What is wrong with this item” instead of assuming the material and fit would be perfect for me if it was perfect for someone who recommended it. Thanks!

Another great video. I liked your idea of looking at something and asking yourself what is wrong with it, what you’d change about it if you were designing it. Simple, but oh so helpful! I’ve used a technique my sister-in-law introduced me to. If I see something in a store I think I’d really like (but don’t necessarily NEED) I put it in my cart and continue shopping for awhile, telling myself it’s mine if I really want to buy it. Almost every time I end up putting it back. Using this idea, you get the joy of “buying” it without the cost and without having to store it or maintain it.

We have an expression in Italian that is commonly used:
Let's say you are deciding if you want to buy something and someone tells you: oh come on, it's just 10 euros.
You would answer: yeah, but between having them and not having them it's 20 euros.
As you said, it makes no mathematical sense. But I guess we have that mind set 😄

I like what your saying, but I am struggling to listen because the music is overpowering your voice. Please lower the volume and choose something less clashing. Thank you!
