I suffered with sciatica for most of 2020. and had PT in the pool. Iwas told to do squats at every visit. Even though they triggered my pain, I did them because the therapist told me to and he must know what he' doing, right? I finally work up and realized that I shouldn't do them anymore. Too many therapists are bored and do things by rote. So happy to have you guys to turn to!!!!

This is not the first time you two helped me out of a world of pain. Last time it was my neck, this time lower back pain and sciatica. I was walking miles and miles and hurt myself since I have a slight scoliosis. Already the pain is lessened from the exercises you gave here. Thank you so much. ❤️🙏🏼😊🍀

*Personal reminder of things, moves and exercises that I SHOULD NOT do:*
    1) Bend over touch toes or hurdler stretch
    2) Good mornings
    3) squats (just do shallow ones)
    4) deadlifts
    5) cycling
    6) Walking uphill, walking in a flat ground but doing long strides, and walking uphill with long strides.
    7) Walking (shorter strides ok if no pain)
    8) Burpee
    9) Sit ups (crunches are ok)
    10) Vups
    11) Bending over to catch your breath after a run
    12) Slouching in a chair

I dont do squats but I feel like thats what I'm doing at the gym when I use that machine where you sit, extend your legs and go back and forth. Do you thinks thats ok? I've been doing some since my sciatica went away but try not to use too much weight.

I have been wearing it to sleep as well and I am just floored at the support and lack of pain, I am still having the knee bursa upset if I do not wear the inner soles to support my high arches, but it is improving ♥ And sound in this video is excellent.

Hi guys; new subby here from thr UK. I was diagnosed with low back pain/sciatica in October/November of last year and have been on medication for it plus seen a qualified physiotherapist for it. He suggested that how I present is not typical of a herniated disc but a trapped nerve in a lower facet joint. I've improved greatly through physio exercises, walking, generally keeping active with caution but also gardening so much so that the medication has decreased greatly and I've been discharged from the hospital. The exercises that seem to aggrevate the sciatica for me are extention based exercises and flexion seems to aleviate but I find your videos so helpful especially when you confirm correct posture, sleep positions etc. Thanks for sharing your expertise. I've been referred to the local gym for 12 weeks to
continue and advance on certain exercises and for core, body strengthening and improving balance, afterwards I go in the sauna to warm my back due to air conditioning in the gym. Are there any body strengthing exercise you do recommend to prevent future flare-ups? I'm looking forward to the pilates ball exercise video as tomorrow I go back to the gym for my 4th week and use a ball for ab strengthening exercises and want to avoid bad form and further injury. Thanks. 👍

One of the pearls of wisdom communicated here is the warning against forward bends. Several stretching videos show people leaning far forward, trying to touch their toes which standing up. Now we know this is to the detriment of the lower back and could aggravate the sciatic nerve. Thank you Robert and Bradley.

First off thank you guys for all this valuable information. I have a big problem that no one has been able to help me with for almost 15 years.
I have three severely herniated/degenerated disc’s from L2 through L5, and a hairline fractured SI joint. I have numbness in my heels that comes and goes associated with pain and tingling behind my calf muscle. I’ve been through PT for 15 years, massage, chiropractic therapy etc. Since 2003 surgeons have told me that my only solution is a fusion...I don’t believe them because I do have days where the pain is minimal, though most days the pain is severe and limiting my lifestyle. I have six active kids and three busy companies, but I live in pain and just deal with it. Curling up in a fetal position is usually my only relief, though from the sound of it from you guys that only offers a momentary solution.
I don’t want irreversible surgery, I guess I’m not sure what my question is, but I’m just dying for some relief other than pain meds!
    Thanks!
    Adam

Your demonstrations are top notch, and your enjoyment and enthusiasm is infectious. I would like to see you guys put more emphasis on repetitions, how many to begin with, how many to progress to, time duration to hold a position, and how many times a day to do them. You do touch on this sometimes, and your reminder of listening to biofeedback is very important, but in order to build a program for myself some timeline info would be most helpful.

You guys are the best. I have watch 4-5hrs of videos. I have on right side:
At L4-L5, there is a diffuse annular bulge with a right lateral disc extrusion extending into the right neuroforamen this results in mild-to-moderate central canal narrowing. Disc osteophyte complex facet hypertrophic change and right lateral disc
extrusion results in severe right neuroforaminal narrowing. Left neuroforamen is patent.
At L5-S1, there is a diffuse annular bulge indents ventral thecal sac mildly narrows the central canal. Disc osteophyte complex and facet hypertrophic results in mild-to-moderate left and mild right neuroforaminal narrowing.
At age 50. I'm it great physical shape for well over 15yrs. This has come from years of odd stuff, shovel snow, yard work, odd stuff around the house and some say gym, but i say NO. I don't do any legs workouts ever. And my chiropractic also said it's just from years of stuff that build up to now. I have great posture when i workout and never ever go heavy. I was told from primary to do the lower steroid injection to help reduce pain to heal, but after research (since i work pharmacy all my life) I decide to do PT instead. Don't like what i read on the injection and stories. Also not FDA recommendations. I think your videos will help me know doubt to avoid prolong pain and being out of work.

At 8.50...they are so right about the walking..I have had back issues with bulging disc and sciatica , recently settled and flared up again after too much deadlift and leg press in one session (personal trainer pushing Me...agh)...but definitely walking up hills and taking long strides in walking is to be avoided....my excellent osteopaths advised me of this point some time ago. Lots of physios and other practitioners (I've been to many!) Never mentioned this point...just said do walking. But there's walking....and there's walking!! Everyone is different, but some simple things can do so much aggravation when you already suffering. I also found normal yoga was the worst!!! All that extreme twisting and bending...flared my sciatica up for weeks...so depressing. So now I'm on a very pared down exercise plan at gym....I think my personal trainer is a bit disappointed...but I have to insist...it's not him with chronic pain to live with.

Thanks for the video, I can see how I've been hurting my disc herniation from the exercises you mentioned. What cardio do you recommend? Elliptical? Stair master? Maybe you can do a video of recommendations thx

I think it's great that you point out that we need to do less of what hurts us and more of what helps us. I think, perhaps especially for women, and maybe I should just speak for myself here, I tend to push myself hard. Not in an athletic sense but in an everyday I must be doing something too help the house, help my child, help my husband, even if it hurts. And I need to figure out how to do things that help others without hurting me. I think a lot of times I figure that it needs to get done and if it hurts to get it done oh well, at least it's getting done. So, although it seems fairly obvious to not do things that hurt yourself and instead to do things that help yourself, I think for me at least it is important to remind myself that I don't have to hurt.

Invaluable basic information. Thanks. I am dealing with herniated disc so bad I had to do steroid injections to control the pain. The last week before the injections, all I could do was lie on my back on my exercise mat, the sciatica pain was uncontrollable. I am now embarking on exercise and strengthening program, your videos are very helpful. Especially this one, what NOT TO DO. FWIW, and you might comment on this, I have found that wearing a simply wrap around brace, especially first few hours in the morning, helps me be aware and maintain good posture, but the compression helps control lower back pain. Can you comment in a video on use of these wrap around, snug with velcro braces? I have bought several models to try, and I think it is helping.

Went to my PT session today for pain in my lower back and to the left of my spine. I mentioned to the therapist that it could be my pitiformis muscle messing with my sciatic nerve.. She did not know what it is. I'm glad I am receiving good information on this channel. Thanks!

I was diagnosed by my doctor with Greater Trochanteric , never had so much pain in my life, funny thing is Doc gave me some exercises to do, but as it got worse, I then saw a Physio who gave me a completely different set to do, yet diagnosed the same condition.

I find the overhead press (standing military press) kind of hard on the back. Although the pressure is going the other way, i.e., you bend back rather than slump. I've noticed it helps if I flex my glutes.

Not knew to resistance weight workouts. In saying that, ALOT of the people in the gym use BAD form.
I learn “good form” from you Bob & Brad! Thanks 👏👏👏 a lot!!!
Have you ever done a video on “indoor” recumbent bikes? I find the recumbent back easier on my 61 year old back. 😬

The burpee one made so much sense to me. I don't do burpees anymore but when I'm cleaning the shower for example, so I'm in that position for a while (sometimes exercing force), I experience the most sciatica pain. It definitely triggers it more than anything else I do. After doing that If I lay down on my bed and get up again after a bit I can't walk without it hurting sooo bad. If I keep walking slowly it eventually gets better but not painless. In the morning after when I get out of bed I don't feel any sciatica pain anymore... I've had x-rays done but they don't show anything. Although I did fracture my tailbone about 10 years ago, I think this might be a consequence of it? I have no idea.

I re-injured my back doing a squat with just a pair of light dumbells in my hands, I was careful to keep good form. I didn't injure myself badly but had to rest my back for a week.

You guys do a great job at explaining things in simple terms and remind me of good basic stretches for my back. I have ruptured L5/S1, bulging L4 and L3. My chronic back pain that manifest into the outside of my hips feeling like a knife is shoved into my hip. Any suggestions? Would psoas muscle have anything to do with my pain and can you offer some stretching exercises for the psoas.

    Great video!!!
Can you do a video on which yoga poses are good or bad???!
Do you think you could do a video for the people who are not centralizers, so they know what to do to heal?! If you do that video, can you go into more detail of how you know whether the centralizer exercises are helping or hurting? Sometimes I try to do them but it hurts for a minute or goes slightly to the foot but then it gets better after a minute. Or sometimes it feels better right away but then hurts afterward, so it's confusing. Thanks!
