For centuries, farmers and gardeners have cultivated homegrown tobacco for personal use and sale. Although today the vast majority of tobacco is grown and cured by large corporations, it's still possible to grow your own with a bit of know-how and a lot of patience. Growing tobacco is legal but can become quite a strenuous process, so follow these steps to grow your own tobacco. Crop Cultivation. In the first stage of the growing process, tobacco seeds are sown in specially -constructed seedbeds.Harvesting. After two to three months, the plants are ready for harvesting. i just read tobacco's wikipedia page, it talks about child labour on tobacco farms even in the US, how people get nicotine poisoning from doing the harvesting... How was your experience ?
@@pianospeedrun I began working in tobacco at the tobacco barn the summer I was 5. I wasn’t forced to work, but children wanted to be where their family was.
I began by supplying the women stringing the tobacco onto sticks of tobacco for curing in the 2 story tobacco barns and other small tasks. By age 7 I was strong enough to lift the 35to 40 lb.. Sticks of tobacco and take them inside the barn to be handed to people lifting them up high into the barn. I was paid a child’s wage for that.
When I was 10 I began stringing the tobacco onto the sticks and began receiving adult wages for that. I was so proud that at age 11 I was able to open a savings account at the local bank. In 1964 when farm help became hard to get because people could get more money on welfare than by working, at age 14 , I was in high demand in the community and worked 5-6 days a week every summer.
I learned the value of my labor and to give my best effort in exchange for that labor. At 16 I got my first job off the farm and worked every summer while I was in grade, middle and high school and in college.
@@1charlastar886 Very nice. For contrast I'm a city boy and lived a very sheltered life. I'm 27 and just about gaining fiancial independance. I did a few months of farm work picking apples so i can still relate. I had admiration for the seasonal workers that came to work with a happy face and plowed thru the orchard at top speed with top picking quality, very inspiring. The work days seemed like nothing to them, a blend of great focus yet very relaxed, always open to joke around. They where respected and in high demand as you where. Have a good one !
@@1charlastar886 I always thought that farm work should be paid just as much as being a lawyer or doctor tho, idk if it ever crossed your mind... while doing the task it hit me how underpaid the job was, the best workers made decent money but they give 100% of themselves, I really don't see why these other professions should deserve more money... I understand free market dynamics have set the price of labour, still something felt off.

Tobacco is usually seeded in February and is ready in 6-8 weeks to transplant after all danger of frost is past. Of course, this timeline depends on where you are.
