  • A variant of Don Gapen's Muddler Minnow created in the 1930s, the Marabou Muddler is a big fish attractor in its own right. Aside from the marabou wing, another primary difference is the cactus chenille body.
    Hook: #4-10 3x-6x long streamer
    Thread: Black (or tan)
    Tail: Red hackle tips
    Body: Silver cactus chenille
    Wing: White marabou (or yellow)
    Topping: Peacock herl, 3-4 strands
    Head: Natural deer hair, spun and clipped

    Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading new tying videos every Tuesday and Friday, with the occasional extra video on other days.
    Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

    Good job Matt. I like to use this one as a streamer. Those Stonfo deer hair trimmers are the real deal. I resisted buying one until I saw too many Barry Ord Clarke videos! It makes a big difference from my old "hack and whack technique!"

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I think I remember is both commenting on Barry's video when he first used them. They do make it easier but believe me, I still do the hack and whack method plenty of times. 🤣

    Thanks Matt. That fly head makes me glad I have a trimming basket. I need to learn how to tie deer hair heads. The razor blade holder seems like a must.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That Stonfo blade holder does indeed help, but it's not that vital. I used to use double-sided razor blades and put a piece of electrical tape on one side to keep me from slicing my fingers all up. :-)

    I’ve only tied muddlers with a tinsel or dubbed body. Using crystal chenille makes for a bit fuller body & looks faster for tying. Excellent idea!
    One tip if you don’t yet have a hair stacker, but do have a bodkin with a half-hitch tool, it works great for hair packing if it will fit over the hook eye. Alternatives are a drilled out plastic bottle cap or small piece of wood or the front half of a ballpoint pen.
    I’ve found white muddlers particularly effective when fishing ponds for holdover trout in early spring just after ice-out.

      Thanks Bob! I can't take credit for the cactus chenille on this one. That was the recipe in one of my Orvis books. And great tips re the DIY hair packer. Also- thanks for the email answer. My internet is down right now but hopefully Comcast gets us back up Saturday night. I think you've swayed me on picking up Forgotten Flies. 🙂

    I was talking to a fish one day and she told me that they like buggier flies better. I find it interesting that people try and tie perfect imitations of bugs but in the real world predators look for weakness and crippled prey. I would think that imperfect flies would fit that scenario better than perfect flies. My wife tells me sometimes I think too much. Keep the good stuff coming Matt.

    Nice tip on creating the curve in the peacock herl. I've managed to tie for 50+ years without learning that, so thanks. Since I got a tip, I'll leave one as well. Matt likely knows this one but some viewers may not. Peacock herl is great stuff, with many uses in fly tying and cheap as well. But I'm a stickler for herl that has the golden bronze sheen, not the deep green stuff you almost always get at the fly shop. You create the golden bronze color by leaving your package of herl on the dashboard of your car (that's parked outside) for a few weeks in the summer, turning it now and then to expose both sides to the sun. Does it work better? I can't prove it but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peter, I have never heard that but it's a great idea! Do you have a problem of them becoming too brittle?

    • @peterrebhahn1113
      @peterrebhahn1113 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SavageFlies Haven't noticed that but the stuff can be brittle to begin with as you know. Not sure where I first learned that exposing peacock herl to strong sunlight gets you the golden-bronze sheen but I know I didn't invent it. I wouldn't make a big deal of it on a streamer pattern such as the muddler you tied in this video but on a nymph or a wet fly I really do want it. The first place I can ever remember seeing a reference to the difference is in an old book that's now not much read called "Tactics On Trout" by Ray Ovington -- a book I devoured as a youth, more for its quirkiness and a certain kind of charm that for its utility.

  • @donmoroz5502
    @donmoroz5502 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could have used a light color 140 or 70 denier under the body, then switched to the heavier thread for the deer hair head. Also I usually do all my deer hair with nylon mono "invisible "sewing thread. I like the slight stretch on this thread keeping the deerhair spun tight. This includes Deer Hair Salmon flies and Bombers.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great tip Don! Thank you. Intuitively I know we can use different threads on the same fly, but I always forget that when I'm actually tying. :-)
