Great vid Julia! I'm not sure how your schedule works with uploads and picking different artists/bands... But if you ever decide to listen to another Spiritbox piece of music then you legit have to do The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound. It's regarded as one of their best works ever. 3 parts totalling 16 minutes and very worth it. With even more complexity in the vocals and instrumentals involved. Recorded in 2019 off of their EP in 2017. You are the type of person to actually grasp the emotion in songs and I think this would be a great one for you. Great work! See ya later!
Love watching your descent into the world of metal. So much talent to be found, but most people just brush it off as noise. Their loss. Just saw them live. Absolutely UH-MAZ-ING!!!
Best part about reacting to this one take. Is that it sounds better vocally than the released version. Specially the end . I'm looking forward to this one julia. You rock
I appreciate that her voice is mixed higher in this one-take than the album version, the mix on her voice being a little too low was the only complaint I had with Eternal Blue
It shows how good the singer is if a one take performance with minimal effects can still hold up to a studio version, especially in this genre. I would say in this specific case the studio version is still sounds overall better and resonates more where as Tatiana from Jinjer one take performance of Judgement & Punishment I much prefer to the studio version. It's so good on it's own and wasn't a fan of certain mixing and harmony choices and layering in the studio version.
Oh, how I can relate to that exact feeling! The vibe "Circle With Me" gives makes certain emotions awaken and fully take you over. I can't even stress that enough. It's brill.
The ending screams are completely different here then they are on the album. I LOVE how she ends this one take. She does the same thing live, love her so much, can’t wait to see her again next month!! You definitely need to treat yourself to the rest of the album. It’s a masterpiece.
I fucking *LOVE* Courtney's power stancing. The way you can tell that she is just straight up feeling the music is so relatable. I very much so "sway" when I'm really into a song. God I love courtney so much. Both she and Tatiana Shmayluk are unbelievable artists. Because what they do... (bands included) is actual art
If you want to binge react to Spiritbox, do NOT react to the Eternal Blue album (first), but watch the 16-minute full band studio live performance of "The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound", which is an incredible early masterpiece from their first 3 connected songs of their first EP. It is an outstanding experience to watch. I am sure many here would agree to that. Already all facettes of her voice and the Spiritbox concept were there right from the start. A beautiful Spiritbox symphony. Warm and sparkling.
All of that, but also don't forget the rest of their discography. The Singles Collection EP is also peak Spiritbox. All their stuff is incredible and ripe for binging lol.
Courtney is a power house, the way that she can quickly flip between her growls, fry and beautiful airy singing is amazing to see/hear. There's something about this song that just breaks me but in the best way possible.
I remember a year and a half or how ever long ago it was when metal extreme vocals virgin Julia first listened to Tatiana and Jinjer do Pisces and how terrified you looked. Now fast forward to present day and you attack these extreme vocal vids with this sense of joy that has been very fun to watch. Thank you for giving my favorite genre your honest chance at understanding and dare I say even liking So happy I can honestly call you a fellow metalhead.
I'm glad you did the one-take for the reaction to this track because that vocal ending in the last chorus you love so much was added in during rehearsal for live shows- the album version is just cleans for that whole chorus. Saw them live a couple months back and Courtney performs the song as in this one-take and it was absolutely electric.
Completely agree with you, when hearing the lp version we would assume there is some manipulation on that final part, but this live version leaves no doubt, Courtney is an alien. The pitch on that scream is simply amazing, the fact that the track had just double timed and she comes in with this roller coaster of vocals, blows my mind everytime. Great reaction. Thank you.
Just want to let you know that she's just as good live as she is in this. I've seen them 3 times. The last time was last weekend at Louder Than Life. They put a video on their channel, but it is a festival recording as opposed to a studio recording.
For someone who is not a fan of the growl, this whole thing she's doing is pretty dope. Not overdoing it. Switch-ups and blends. This I like. Those breathy pops called out during the melody was cool too.
I recommend doing The Mara Effect live at silverside next it’s 3 songs in one and it’s an absolute banger, it was the first stuff they released as Spiritbox
Love Courtney's one take videos, and this one is crazy. That ending blew me away. I don't think I've ever heard a sing/scream switch that fast and clean. She's really freaking good.
...and in tune....As Julia says, you don't get to hear that often...Actually, as hers, it's my first time too... I think I heard some similar from Maria Brink before, but yet, this is different....Courtney gives us full fry scream..and still keep the tone...
I love the entire Eternal Blue release. I like how they're not afraid to be experimental and weird at times and not just heavy and screaming. She has a great voice and melody to her singing. THE SUMMIT and CONSTANCE are two of my favorites on the album. I'm really curious where they will go with their new songs. 😊
Love this version so much more than the official recording. You can hear so much more of her voice. And those scream/clean switches at the end?? Certified badass.
Before today, I was familiar with Spiritbox only from watching reaction videos. Their music never clicked with me. After watching this video, however, I immediately bought Eternal Blue and have just finished listening through the entire album. Might be the best experience I've had listening to an album since Tool's latest. I'm finally sold on Spiritbox. Better late than never, I guess.
This was a fantastic reaction. Love seeing Julia getting hyped up by a technique and going into an in-depth explanation on why it’s amazing! Your enthusiasm is contagious, Julia!
I'm so unbelievably glad you decided to take a look at this. Every time I hear the one take version I think to myself "Julia and Elizabeth (TCV) NEED to hear this." ALSO WELCOME BACK
If you like tonality in screams, you should check out Architects-Hereafter. Sam Carter is the master class in screaming in tune with the music. Also BLEGH king
If noone mentioned this yet, this is false cord screaming (highs, lows, and everything in between). Most of the time you can tell apart false fold action from fry by the consistency of the tone of the scream. Fry screaming will sound smoother because the mechanism is smaller (e.g. Will Ramos mostly does fry); False fold screams will (most of the time) sound more "breaky" and "gritty" (you will hear alternation of tone, like in the screams that Cortney does, you can hear distinctly moments of disconnection of the false folds, where her falsetto comes through, and moments of connection, making the tone sound nicely inconsistent)
The music video for Constance is definitely worth watching. They just released another version of it, but I am still partial to the original. The album has the original version of Holy Roller and a remix with Ryo Kinoshita of Crystal Lake. Will Ramos released a cover version of the song and also did it live with Spiritbox at a recent show which was fun to see.
The entire album Eternal Blue is just first class, amazing throughout, nothing Spiritbox does sounds mundane it twists genres, is at once a relaxing 'drifting' sound and at the same time a savage punch in the audio soundscape. Such a bloody brilliant band.
That performance must be in the bible of metal singing man. What a marvellous time to live for Music lover maan ! Sleep Token , Spiritbox , Dayseeker , Bad Omens are LITERALLY stuck in my car playlist ! W O W
Thanks for this awesome reaction! This is exactly the kind of reaction this video deserves. Don't you just hate when people watch this video and they go like: "that's cool". I really hope more people react to this version because we don't have enough. It's never enough!
Saw Spiritbox live in February. Courtney has such an incredible stage presence. I'm so excited to see where they go from their debut album, I am STARVING for more!
Great video again. Courtney is an amazing vocalist. Your reaction at the end was golden. I'm going to see Spiritbox in the Netherlands in June, can't wait.
I'm obsessed with this band, particularly this song. Her screaming with the pitch reminds me of Devin Townsend. He is the only other vocalist I've heard sing and scream at the same time like that
Courtney is so great! One of the nice things about this video is that it isn't perfect, her voice does crack a bit, but it gives it so much authenticity and emotion.
9:00 I HELD 🎵the🎵 POW🎵er🎵 OF 🎵a🎵 DDYIINNGGG SUNNNN I don't think it's a conscious choice. It just came out that way because she had a very relaxed technique and she was being very expressive.
Glad you noticed the pitch melody thing at the end of the song. That’s what stood out to me for this one take as well. If only she did that on the studio version as well.
Yup. I'm not naturally one for screaming arbitrarily, but you nailed why I love screaming in metal. It packs a punch emotionally and definitely ups the hype and impact of the music
So awesome that you checked this out! I think another song that should be on your bucket list is Silver and Stone pt. 1 by Slice the Cake. The whole album it’s from is incredible!
🤘🤘 Fantastic!!! I am really digging Courtney!!! The influx of powerful women fronting great bands is making Heavy Rock and Metal really stay alive and I'm here for it 💯!!!! 😉❤✌
Hey Julia! I really enjoy you content, and your reaction to Spiritbox was infectious in its pure joy and drive. I'm from Ukraine, and as you may know, my country is facing ruthless russian war of conquest, but we're holding our ground. Every conscious Ukrainian here is doing their part to help or spread word about Ukraine, our fight, and our culture as the latter one faced hundreds of years of erasure. I love Spiritbox so much, I really want to see them Live because her Live one takes are amazing. I sadly missed them Live last month but I'm sure they'll come again one day.
They're coming to Grand Rapids in July and I am so excited to be able to see them in concert! So glad you're reviewing Spiritbox! I hope you'll do the rest fo them. There are no bad so=ngs from this group
I know this was 3 months ago, but watched it a few times. She doesn’t get as much attention as she should, but the physical change at demand without sound is clear and amazing. Courtney is damn talented
Spiritbox was just on tour with a band called Bad Omens, Noah, their vocalist is the best in the realm of metal right now in my opinion, so I would definitely highly recommend you check out “Like A Villain, or “The Death of Peace of Mind” by them
If you haven't heard that type of pitched scream before where you blend scream with melody you should really get into Architects. Sam Carter does that all the time, it's kind of his signature style. I'm sure you'll have a lot to talk about that.
An earlier example of her "pitched screams" can be heard on their track "Perennial", which just so happens to be a gorgeous AF song/music video combo. 😉👍 Can't go too wrong with Spiritbox though, always something interesting going on 😁
This is a banger and Courtney took me by surprise yet again! That ending 😩 ?!?
Great review! Fun live chat on the premier, I should've thrown out what's in the box! This time it was spirit!
Ending is just damned epic. Probably my favourite Spiritbox track, and such a great performance of it hands down.
Courtney and crew can do absolutely no wrong!
Great vid Julia! I'm not sure how your schedule works with uploads and picking different artists/bands... Yes, I love how Courtney approaches the mic like she's about to friggin' attack it.
Yes same!
well. she kinda does ;)
telekinetic destruction.
Best part about reacting to this one take. Is that it sounds better vocally than the released version. Specially the end . I'm looking forward to this one julia. You rock
Imo the released version has a lot of intricacies that this version doesnt have but both are good.
Lol some like ketchup and some like mustard I'm just saying my opinion. I assure you I aint Def
I appreciate that her voice is mixed higher in this one-take than the album version, the mix on her voice being a little too low was the only complaint I had with Eternal Blue
It shows how good the singer is if a one take performance with minimal effects can still hold up to a studio version, especially in this genre. It's so good on it's own and wasn't a fan of certain mixing and harmony choices and layering in the studio version.
I would rather have this version on my Spotify, that ending is powerful and you don’t hear that in the studio version
I can't count the amount of times this song has brought a tear to my eyes. There's something about it which provokes a raw reaction in me.
Oh, how I can relate to that exact feeling!
The vibe "Circle With Me" gives makes certain emotions awaken and fully take you over. I can't even stress that enough. It's brill.
Literally, this one take has made me cry lol
I thought I was the only one lol
Every single time...
It gets me at my core every time
same here, courtney put so much in to the vocals its amazing!
The ending screams are completely different here then they are on the album. I LOVE how she ends this one take. She does the same thing live, love her so much, can’t wait to see her again next month!! You definitely need to treat yourself to the rest of the album. It’s a masterpiece.

God I love courtney so much. Both she and Tatiana Shmayluk are unbelievable artists. Because what they do... (bands included) is actual art
I love this one because it looks like she's about to fight the mic
11:27 this is what i was waiting for. the "WAAAAAAtching me" is spinechilling.
Yesss
I love how she lifts her shoulders with "martyr" and "altar". It does something to her voice and looks endearing.
She also swaps the offset of the runoff of each martyr/altar chorus by chorus... So damn good!
The level of excitement when this came up on my main page was ridiculous. Thank you for the video, Julia! 🤘🤘
The last clean to harsh switch honestly all I can do is almost laugh at how easily she can do that... It's shocking and amazing
I’m just so stoked that this genre of music that I love so much gets so much respect from vocal coaches, means a lot Julia xxx
Courtney is a star vocally, and she also has charisma to burn
Warlock.
Oh yes 100% this!!!!
I second this.
tbh she could do that and also react to the whole Eternal Blue album
@@AnarchistPanda161 well, sure! hahaha. just personal preference of mine ...
All of that, but also don't forget the rest of their discography. The Singles Collection EP is also peak Spiritbox. All their stuff is incredible and ripe for binging lol.
Eternal Blue is a great album with a surprising amount of variety. A full album reaction would be dope!
The contrast beetwen your hair and Courtney's hair...is mesmerising. By the way fantastic reaction
16:18 SKILLS Julia. Very well done \m/
I agree. I never heard anything like her voice before. It’s absolutely stunning.
Not only is her voice stunning but her lyrics are beautiful.
Courtney is a power house, the way that she can quickly flip between her growls, fry and beautiful airy singing is amazing to see/hear. There's something about this song that just breaks me but in the best way possible.
This whole performance is so freaking good, but the very end moves to me to literal tears every single time
I SCREAMED SO LOUD WHEN I SAW YOU UPLOADED THIS
Being present when Spiritbox performed this live was ETHERIAL
This is the 6th or 7th reaction video i'm watching just to skip to the outro. Greatest vocal line i've heard in a while.

Many bands have done this over the years
I recommend doing The Mara Effect live at silverside next it’s 3 songs in one and it’s an absolute banger, it was the first stuff they released as Spiritbox
The Mara Effect live session is literally the best, also the live version of Constance they just posted on their page.
The Mara Effect is truly a masterpiece.....
Love Courtney's one take videos, and this one is crazy. That ending blew me away. I don't think I've ever heard a sing/scream switch that fast and clean. She's really freaking good.

I think I heard some similar from Maria Brink before, but yet, this is different....Courtney gives us full fry scream..and still keep the tone...
Stoked I stayed up to watch this - absolutely love Spiritbox
Thanks for catching premiere :)
Yes, been waiting for more reactions to this one take! The switches from screams to cleans are great.
Just the other day they released a video performing this song live with Tatiana of Jinjer, very cool
That colab is TH-cam Gold! 🖤🖤🖤
I love the entire Eternal Blue release. I like how they're not afraid to be experimental and weird at times and not just heavy and screaming. She has a great voice and melody to her singing. the last 30 seconds never fails to give me the whole body chills
Hell yes! Been waiting for more of these guys!!
This was a fantastic reaction.
Love seeing Julia getting hyped up by a technique and going into an in-depth explanation on why it’s amazing!
Your enthusiasm is contagious, Julia!
I'm so unbelievably glad you decided to take a look at this. Every time I hear the one take version I think to myself "Julia and Elizabeth (TCV) NEED to hear this."
ALSO WELCOME BACK
The whole album is fantastic

Love Courtney's breathy offsets.
Jinjer "Who Is Gonna be The One" (live) Napalm Records. Pretty please. :)
Courtney's skill and talent are unquestionable. Performing so well in one take is insane, and those pitched screams are flawless.
I agree that you can hear a lot of Courtney's "real" voice in her harsh vocals.
YESSSSS! spiritbox is 1 of my favorite bands at this moment. hopefully you enjoyed this. would be funny if im praising them and you hated them lol
Just seen this dude 👍
If noone mentioned this yet, this is false cord screaming (highs, lows, and everything in between).

The end brings me to tears don’t know why , I love her , what a fucking insane technique
I love all her songs!!! But this one is my Very Favorite Song. It moved me to tears the very first time and it still does!!!! ❤❤❤
Whenever I saw this a few months ago I was super keen to see your reaction to it.
Glad the switch at the end hit you the same as me.
Good on ya.
I think we’d all be here for the binge analysis!
W O W
I love all of this, but those pitched screams at the end are *Chef's Kiss*
Oh, please, please, PLEASE do a full album analysis, I would love it!
And you would love the songs hehehe
I've been addicted to this version of the song for months now. Courtney just plucks ALL the emotion strings in me with this one.
A full album reaction?! I'm here for it! Spiritbox are the goat.
It is very unique! I loved it. This song is going to my playlist. Thanks for review Julia!
This is one of my favorite metal songs in the last 10 years
This band is fire I have just recently discovered them this past year Courtney's vocals are incredible and this was my first introduction to them 🙌
Count me as voting for a full analysis of their Eternal Blue album! I would be SO VERY INTERESTED in seeing that!
Honestly I would so watch a whole album analysis.
This album was in my top 10 of the year.
Beautiful.
That fry at the end with the pitch change gets me every time. 10/10
I'm obsessed with this band, particularly this song. Her screaming with the pitch reminds me of Devin Townsend. He is the only other vocalist I've heard sing and scream at the same time like that
This reaction is gold, I totally had that reaction and then some when hearing/watching this
Courtney is so great! One of the nice things about this video is that it isn't perfect, her voice does crack a bit, but it gives it so much authenticity and emotion.
This shit gives me goosebumps every single time I hear it, love her dude.
Amazing singer with picturesque control of range.
love that you did this one! its insane!
This shit is so fucking raw its unreal. I almost tear up everytime I even think about those screams at the end.
9:00 I HELD 🎵the🎵 POW🎵er🎵 OF 🎵a🎵 DDYIINNGGG SUNNNN
I don't think it's a conscious choice. It just came out that way because she had a very relaxed technique and she was being very expressive.
I was waiting for this one!
The ending makes me emotional in the strangest way. It sounds so dark and beautiful.
The whole one take performance is amazing, but that ending.. that ending gives me goose bumps every time, its so brutal.
Glad you noticed the pitch melody thing at the end of the song. That’s what stood out to me for this one take as well. If only she did that on the studio version as well.
Can confirm, they are awesome live! Great video :)
Yup. I'm not naturally one for screaming arbitrarily, but you nailed why I love screaming in metal. It packs a punch emotionally and definitely ups the hype and impact of the music
Those last 20 secs will always get me!
PLEASE DO THE WHOLE ALBUM!!! it’s my favorite album😭💚
Yeah she was bodying those screams, but yeah those quick switches are mind blowing!!!! 😁
When her melody part comes we are so mesmerized by her voice and I love it so much 💙
If you like when screams follow the melody, check out anything off of the album Holy Hell by Architects! Sam Carter is the singscream master!
A really good example of a vocalist who combines singing with pitched screaming is Sam Carter from Architects.
Justin from tallah does it much quickier in the song overconfidence
My first Spiritbox experience; I hear a lot of Dido in Courtney's clean vocals, which I'm a big fan of. Very impressive performer!

Thank you for reading this message!
I love Spiritbox so much, I really want to see them Live because her Live one takes are amazing. I sadly missed them Live last month but I'm sure they'll come again one day.
It's a super rare talent to be able to pull off that scream to clean and back so effortlessly. She's a true talent.
Julia seems like the living impersonation of this classic emoji ^-^
Also I really love her analysis, very entertaining and educational!
They're coming to Grand Rapids in July and I am so excited to be able to see them in concert!
So glad you're reviewing Spiritbox! I hope you'll do the rest fo them. There are no bad so=ngs from this group
YAS Finally! This is the best performance!
I know this was 3 months ago, but watched it a few times. She doesn’t get as much attention as she should, but the physical change at demand without sound is clear and amazing. Courtney is damn talented
the vocals at the end were insane!!
Here ability to transition from scream to clean especially at the end (which should be every chorus) is pure talent. She’s fuckin sic
Regarding 7:00, while it could be a stylistic choice (which I lean toward), Courtney does have a vocal polyp and has had it for awhile.
Spiritbox was just on tour with a band called Bad Omens, Noah, their vocalist is the best in the realm of metal right now in my opinion, so I would definitely highly recommend you check out “Like A Villain, or “The Death of Peace of Mind” by them
