    As an American, I was surprised to hear the U.S. grouped with those others as well. It's not currently the case, but perhaps a dire prognosis of what awaits us.

    The death penalty is legal in many states in the US (most blue states have done away with it), and I believe still exists at the Federal level in the United States as well.

    It's interesting the guest says that the United States is not liberal. I think a key difference between the United States and Western Europe (and even Canada also) is that the United States is not a social democracy. This is rarely if ever discussed in American mainstream media... Actually I can remember reading a column in the Guardian when Bernie first began rising in the US (I thought the author was sort of explaining/interpreting US politics for a European audience), and the columnist referred to Bernie as a right-wing social democrat, haha. Of course the right in America has Bernie as an unreconstructed communist basically!
