I think one of the biggest reason the rocket plot in gold and silver was so weak was because of the hardware limitations and them jamming Kanto it the game. If it was just johto then they could have flushed out everything about Johto a bit more. Having two regions made both Johto and Kanto really barren and lackluster. Heartgold and Soulsilver at least gave life to both regions the best they could.
Alot of the issues in gold/silver were just bad balancing I mean the gyms after the elite 4 are weaker than Clair in a few spots and the lackluster move pools/stats ment the second half just felt meh And the rocket plotlines would have ment something if they weren't under leveled
Taking the nostalgia glasses off, Gen 2 really isn't that great. 8 gym leaders and a total of FOUR WHOLE ASS Gen 2 Pokemon. 4 of the gyms only had Kanto Pokemon.
Also you can rebattle gym leaders. Gives alot of experience points and can much easier assemble level 100 teams. I would deliberately hold off on evolutions to decrease experience points needed as well.
Actually, as the urban legend goes, Iwata wrote a new compression algorithm that saved so much space they could put Kanto in, relatively close to the deadline. They didn't have enough time to flesh out Kanto very much because of that, but everything in Johto was more or less finished months before that. So in a world where Iwata hadn't intervened, Gold and Silver would've been just really mediocre games with a terrible story and weird region.

Great run. Funnily enough, I got stuck on the power plant fiasco as a kid too. I never talked to the manager so the event to fix the power plant never triggered.
The reason for hypnosis missing is because in gen 2 the ai has a chance to miss status afflicting moves despite them having 100% accuracy. So, when poliwrath used mind reader, it still has like a 15% chance to miss. Hope this cleared it up!
Literally just discovered your channel with this video. You have a very cathartic yet entertaining voice, and I enjoy your polished yet simple editing style. I'm looking forward to exploring your other videos this week, have a good day my guy!
I remember doing a Gym Leader challenge about 2 years ago and chose to beat the game using Poison-Type. I was pleasantly surprised with the work that Ariados put in on that run
Ariados is one of my fav gen2 mons. I like its design a lot. I've been binging your videos the last week, and I have a few I need to finish watching cause I'll see another of your videos and I'm like "Oh cool! I wonder how that mon will do?" And forget to finish the video I'm already watching lol.
3:45 the designers seemed to agree. With the remake, they gave Bugsy uturn on his scyther, so his cocoon pokemon at least felt a little more appropriate, since they could be seen as tool for the scyther- metapod is a tank that absorb that big attack you might have prepared for scyther, while the kakuna has poison- and only does poison.
When you talk about any gym leader having a weak team, I'm reminded of my favourite fan mod: Pokemon Crystal Clear. Among various other changes (Like 30 or so starter choices, making the world more free-roam, making every Pokemon available) it makes it so every trainer scales based on your badge count. Think Buggsy running 2 cocoon pokemon is odd? Well, rematch him with 16 badges and he runs 6 fully evolved level 80 odd 'mons. It makes it seem like every gym leader has different teams based on the challenger. Which would be useful if you were some kid who lived in somewhere like Blackthorn and had Clair as your first gym leader. challenge.
wow this guy is great at the game. he really has a good thought process around the game and he puts together really intelligently done videos. the data and the methodology and stuff is rigorous and we trust his results.

I like how you will do a video of ariados but not start with him... yet start with spinarak and level him up... that’s different and pretty cool. A lot of people will start with the evolution instead of the first stage !
Bit late most likely, but point of note for the ice path: you only need to do 2 left boulder puzzles to progress. You can then just drop down the lower-left one to be able to make it the whole way.
Great run, nice job taking out Red! If you want to try a ground type, I beat Crystal with just a Rhyhorn. I'd love to see how you'd tackle Red, he was quite challenging for me!
Y'know I was wondering why your Spinarak was purple and thought you somehow got a shiny one. I looked on bulbapedia and it turns out for some reason, Spinarak wasn't properly colored green until Crystal version. ...how the heck did that not get fixed until slightly later? Edit : Sneasel too! How the heck did nobody notice that it was very blatantly brown in the sprites when it's like, a very dark blue or black in official artwork? Again that only got fixed to the proper colors in Crystal.
Team rocket was disbanded by red in the first generation, in gen 2 you’re dealing with the remnants… it’s said many times throughout the game during the rocket sequences
In my opinion, Gen 2/Gen 4 Team Rocket is vastly more experienced. Hear me out, even though they lack Giovanni, he was in the Celebi event. He had an intention to go to the Radio tower. But, we fought him, which makes me think.
Mind Reader+Hypnosis doesn't bypass the inbuilt 25% chance for all enemy used status moves to miss. This is a quirk of Gen 1 and 2 (which the presence in the latter shows that it was intentional and not a bug) but basically all status moves be they Hypnosis, Thunder Wave, Tail Whip, you name it have a secondary accuracy check that has a 25% chance for them to fail but *only* if an NPC uses the attack, it doesn't affect players.
Snorlax had me stuck for awhile as a kid. Silver was my first game so I didn't know about the Poke flute. I didn't pass Snorlax until after I beat Yellow.
Morty's Gengar: has no Mind Reader - always hits with Hypnosis Chuck's Poliwrath: uses Mind Reader which ensures hitting on the next turn - Hypnosis misses :D
I thought spinarak and ariados looked cool, but what got me hooked was that ariados could learn psychic. Hoothoot was almost always my first catch though.
I love Ariados. I got him and Hootoot on my first ever play through of Gold and they were on the team when I beat Red. I added Ho-Oh to my team and has to cut a mon but couldn’t let go of Ariados or Noctowl… they were my boys!
Gen 2 Team Rocket makes sense since they are so lost due to not having Giovanni guiding them since he left the Rockets in Gen 1, which is the reason why they feel so... tacked on
I remember playing Gen1 as a child and actualy enjoying fighting against Team Rocket. With my save up allowance i bought Silver, as my Gen2 game - went like yeay team rocket. After less than 10min of boring wave attacks i got frustrated and stopped playing for a week. Most of my friends around that time overleveled hardcore, just to get easily through the team rocket sections. Team Rocket (and every Villian Team after them) was never a danger i took seriously, but Gen2 def gave them a Top5 place of most annoying canonfodder in games ever.
I love Gen 2's Team Rocket. As a kid, I didn't care too much, but as an adult and having played through the Gen 1 games, Team Rocket is treated as hilariously pathetic in Gen 2. You have an organized crime group who just lets a kid walk into their hideout and destroy everyone including the boss. Then three years later after the boss disbands the group, presumably out of embarrassment, some of his lackeys who didn't get the memo try to be Bond villains only to get curbstomped again by another kid. No wonder why the Johto police are never at the radio tower but are there when Elm gets robbed by Silver, they figure that some 10 year old kid who actually successfully stole a Pokemon is more dangerous (and in need of help) than some adult LARPers. It's just the vibe of Gen 2, "lol, watch how silly these adults are" that is amazing, like they decided, let's not take this team seriously.
It kinda makes sense that Team Rocket doesn't feel as threatening in Gen 2. They don't have a powerful leader behind them, in fact the plot is literally about them trying to regroup themselves and convince Giovanni to come back.
I love Ariados, its one of my favorite Pokemon and definitely my favorite bug type. Such a great design, i wish it had better stats, either more speed or more hp and defenses for bulk
Glad these Bug run dont... bugging you! :D ...I know the for is on the left xD Also I prefer team Rocket in gen 1. Despite many good new things and changes, I prefer gen 1 over 2 always
"Leveling up at this point in the game is a nightmare" Man, don't I know it. You'd think they'd have fixed the level curve in the Gen 4 remakes, but nope. I'm playing through SoulSilver right now myself and raising anything I think is interesting (so about 15 Pokemon at that point rather than a regular team of 6), and it's been taking much longer than the same method does in other generations (except maybe 5...) On the plus side, I found a full-odds wild shiny Kakuna in Ilex Forest and naturally caught Pokerus, which has only happened to me once before in an Emerald playthrough.
Hypnosis missed because enemy status moves have something like an additional 25% miss chance in gens one and two. As for Team Rocket, they just don't feel like a threat in gen two, but they do in gen one.
To explain Hypnosis, in gens 1 and 2 status moves have 2 accuracy checks. Mind Reader bypasses the normal check but there is an additional 25% chance that a status move used by an NPC will just fail.

The reason for hypnosis missing is because in gen 2 the ai has a chance to miss status afflicting moves despite them having 100% accuracy. So, when poliwrath used mind reader, it still has like a 15% chance to miss. Hope this cleared it up!
Got it!
I've always loved ariados even though in gen 2 it's not that great. Glad it's gotten better in the newer gen
Literally just discovered your channel with this video. You have a very cathartic yet entertaining voice, and I enjoy your polished yet simple editing style. I'm looking forward to exploring your other videos this week, have a good day my guy!
Welcome aboard! Glad you enjoy my content!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Glad to be here! Keep up the good work, my guy!
I remember doing a Gym Leader challenge about 2 years ago and chose to beat the game using Poison-Type. I was pleasantly surprised with the work that Ariados put in on that run
Loving these runs man. I loved ariados as a kid and got gold because of it! Bug type is a favourite of mine too
Ariados here was pretty much a psychic trapdoor spider that shoots sludge and can drain your energy. Lovely.
Think you’re the first person who is excited over bugs past Scyther and Pinsir haha
My favorite bug type is vespiquen
Bug type Pokemon are pretty cool though. Especially the Unova Bug types imo.
@@2oorsymcbuster833 they can be pretty cool, I’ll be honest and say I’ve never really been one to use them though
@@MortyChallenges You should really try using a Bug type in a playthrough sometimes. They have really gotten better since they started out in Gen I.
@@2oorsymcbuster833 might give it a shot, I enjoy doing solo runs so maybe using one of them in one would be a way of getting some more appreciation
I really like your voice. Your tone also makes it easy to listen to when trying to relax.
Thank you Biology for granting me such a soothing tone ;)
huge bug maniac here, im so happy that theres another poketuber i like that likes the bug type ;w;
Another solid video man. Ariados is such an underrated gem
Which would be useful if you were some kid who lived in somewhere like Blackthorn and had Clair as your first gym leader. challenge.
„What kind of sludge bomb is that?!“
„I AM the sludge bomb!“
Glad to see Ariados get some attention, love that Pokémon!!
I think they did Bugsy like that to make you feel like the battle will be easy and then hit you with a tough fury cutter scyther.
I hope Venomoth will get a regional variant some time, just to add the the confusion 🤣
My appreciation of team rocket in gen 2 went up when I found out Silver is Giovanni's son, but the radio tower can still get stuffed
wow this guy is great at the game. he really has a good thought process around the game and he puts together really intelligently done videos. the data and the methodology and stuff is rigorous and we trust his results.
'Ay! Admiral ariados appreciation!
ariados is my favorite bug type so I’m very happy you’ve done one on this wonderful spider! Also, hi denis.
I’m curious if you’d have one hit his espeon without the critical. But more importantly I’m all caught up on your videos now since I watched the new ones as they came out but was watching the old ones as I waited for new ones. So now I’m even more excited for your hitmonlee video. As always get ass video 👌
Recently found your channel, subscribed at the kanto fossil versus vid. Never thought I’d like ariados, not into bug Pokémon except the scolipede line. Kinda like ariados now after this
Yeah, it's pretty decent! I can't wait to try it out again.
I've been skipping that damn spider for 20 years. Nobody told me it was good(-ish).
PREDATOR: Oooh, tasty bug!
SPIDER: My butt has a face, how does that make you feel?
PREDATOR: Ew, pass!
I like how you will do a video of ariados but not start with him... yet start with spinarak and level him up... that’s different and pretty cool. A lot of people will start with the evolution instead of the first stage !
Wow the Red fight was so clutch omg. Good thing Blastoise didn't use Rain Dance first or it may have ended differently
Ahhh appreciated the limited ads approach man; shame that’s changing 😭
First pokemon I ever caught in silver. Never let me down
Bit late most likely, but point of note for the ice path: you only need to do 2 left boulder puzzles to progress. You can then just drop down the lower-left one to be able to make it the whole way.
It took me way to long to figure this out! Got it now though.
I remember getting pokemon gold for Christmas and catching and using this spider ,i taught it thief and was one of my endgame mons
Snorlax had me stuck for awhile as a kid. Silver was my first game so I didn't know about the Poke flute. I didn't pass Snorlax until after I beat Yellow.
Morty's Gengar: has no Mind Reader - always hits with Hypnosis
Chuck's Poliwrath: uses Mind Reader which ensures hitting on the next turn - Hypnosis misses :D
Can’t wait to use him again!
Fantastic run well done keep up the great work
The first Curse from Haunter brought Spider's HP down to 69.
Nice.
Nice!
Natu using no special moves in Pokémon Crystal would be amazing!
Excuse me a minute
I have to get myself together after seeing Miltank, triggering Shellshock
It kinda makes sense that Team Rocket doesn't feel as threatening in Gen 2. They don't have a powerful leader behind them, in fact the plot is literally about them trying to regroup themselves and convince Giovanni to come back.
I love Ariados, its one of my favorite Pokemon and definitely my favorite bug type. Such a great design, i wish it had better stats, either more speed or more hp and defenses for bulk
I think Bugsy having scyther was a mistake in the first place. Went several playthroughs without knowing heracross even existed!
Glad these Bug run dont... bugging you! :D
...I know the for is on the left xD
Also I prefer team Rocket in gen 1.
7:18 that's what he said!
