Magpie sings with Butcherbird

  • Australian Magpies are not corvids like European or American Magpies. They are actually related to the Australian Butcherbird. They often share territories and we have observed them joining the Magpies attacking a snake. We often hear them communicate with another Butcherbird in the distance and sing at the same time as the Magpies. It could be a coincidence or it might be that it is somehow triggered by the voice of the Magpies. We have no way of knowing what really goes on in their minds, but it is rare to see both of them singing in such close proximity to each other.

    Magpies and butcherbirds are two species of birds that are often found in the same habitats in Australia. While they are both known for their distinct and beautiful songs, they are also known for their unusual behavior of sometimes singing together.
    Magpies have a complex and melodic song, while butcherbirds have a beautiful and flute-like call. When they sing together, they often complement each other's sounds, creating a harmonious and enchanting duet.
    This behavior is not well understood by scientists, but it is believed to be a form of communication between the two species. It's possible that they are coordinating their territorial boundaries or simply enjoying each other's company.
    Regardless of the reason, hearing the songs of magpies and butcherbirds together is a delightful experience and a true wonder of nature.

    We've had several generations of Butcher birds bring their kids along to have a feed and sing along with a couple of magpies on our verandah, as soon as I step outside they come flying from all over the place, and if I'm late they'll hang around outside my window doing the "feed me" tweet.

    My heart almost lept from chest with joy - that's a great recording of nature's harmony
    I recently nursed an injured fledgling maggie which I thought would die and was going to euthanise, but actually recovered from a busted leg.
    The butcher birds didn't harass the maggie, but the noisy mynas are real pricks...

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      That's a lovely story. The Butcherbirds are actually the magpies closest relative and we have observed them working together when faced with a threat. If they spot a python usually the magpies give an alarm call and within minutes are joined by other magpies and butcherbirds to attack the python. Pythons climb up trees at night when the birds are sleeping and grab them. Actually magpies are really good at spotting snakes and we usually know if there is a snake around by their behaviour. Thank you for sharing your experience.

      @@wildhomevideos I have a strange relationship with magpies.
      I have a large permanent scar around my right heel and achilles tendon which I saw after being swooped by a nesting maggie.
      I was maybe not quite 4 year old and lived out of town. Ma would carry me on the rack on back of her pushbike.
      We got swooped at the top of a hill and as Ma swerved in reflex my legs swung wildly and my foot got jammed between the rear wheel and frame all the way down the hill. Skinned me down pretty bad and I had to ride home on the carrier after as there was no mobile phones.
      Oddly the injured maggie recently seemed to follow me and even flew to me as if it were wanting to perch on me. I'd cook him up a scrambled egg and he was so hungry he'd mob me as I came out the door, actually startling me. He hung around my bird bath for weeks. The maggie's leg's still not perfect and neither's my foot, but last I saw him, his plumage looked quite healthy. He was close to death when he came into my realm, mouth agape panting and looking ruffled.
      Thanks for replying

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Ouch!! That must have hurt. Yea, magpies are really smart and they have very long memories. They remember if you do something nasty to them and they also remember if you are kind to them. I think you have a friend for life there. Birds can manage very well with just one leg so I think your magpie will be fine. We live on a rural property quite a distance from other people and although we don't feed our magpies we have a very good relationship with our tribe. They never swoop us. Actually I think they even feel responsible for our safety. We have a birdbath close to the house and one hot day when I was going to refill it a magpie flew past my shoulder and landed just above the birdbath making strange noises at me. I was puzzled at this behaviour and thought maybe I had just been swooped. Then I looked down into the birdbath and there was a python coiled up inside it. Of course pythons are not dangerous to us but the magpies don't know that. I am sure that this magpie tried to warn me of the danger. I am glad that you took the time to share your experiences, it brightens up my day!@@ix-Xafra

      @@wildhomevideos I stopped feeding oldmate a coupla weeks ago. Didn't want him getting dependent.
      Everyone I spoke to - vets and bird rescuers - were adamant he should be put down as busted legs are unfixable. I even thought of just breaking his neck to save him the trauma of being taken to the vet.
      Apparently native animals get free vet care and euthanisation is cheaper...
      Maggie had a busted right foot and my injury from nearly 60 years ago was my right foot.
      It was a profound experience...

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Experts are not always right. I have seen lots of birds manage ok with one leg. They use their wings to compensate. It's a bit harder to forage but magpies are clever and they figure it out. That's what handicapped olympics are all about. You did the right thing. Oldmate got a shot and I am sure he is grateful. Pretty interesting about both of you having the right foot injured. I can understand how you felt.@@ix-Xafra

      Thank you for your lovely comment Michael. We have lots of these birds living on our rural property and often hear them calling at the same time but have never seen them doing that in such close proximity. We have lived here 30 years and this was the first time we have seen this. Unfortunately by the time I got the camera it was nearly over and I did not get very good footage. We still decided to publish it because it is unusual to see that in the wild. They do cooperate together. We have seen them gang up on a python. They don't like pythons because pythons climb trees at night and snatch them while they are sleeping. Here is a fun fact. European and American magpies are corvids but Australian magpies are not corvids and are actually related to Butcherbirds!

    This is indeed very interesting. Lucky the tree had no foliage and it was easy to differentiate the two birds. I'm passionately interested in Australian birds, lucky enough to be born in Aus. In a previous home we had a flock of maggies that visited every day. Several of them would hide one leg in our presence. One of them had us convinced that he really did have only one leg, until one day he brought the other leg out!! LOL! They're tricksters, very assertive and smart. They had a definite "call sign" which I'm convinced they used to identify themselves to each other. Another flock in the same neighbourhood but a few blocks away has a different call sign.

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for your very intriguing comment. Your observation regarding the call sign is very interesting. We live in a rural area bordering with a national park so there is not much human influence with the tribe of magpies living on our property. Over the years we have noticed that they have changed their call and developed a slightly different language to other magpies. Your observations totally correspond with the conclusion we have come to. You are actually the only person that has commented on this observation. If you are interested, the video is called "Australian Magpies calling".

    Yes, they like to be fed, eat meat, show gratitude, if for example you save their young from enemies. And in the rare cases of people who have adopted orphaned birds, make wonderful companions. They can be a nuisance when they go into nesting protective mode, swooping people. Love magpies. Thank you for sharing this beautiful video. Well done 👍 ❤

      It is interesting, we live on a rural property far away from neighbours and have a Magpie tribe who consider our house and the adjoining paddocks their turf. But those Butchies never stay still for long. Still thought it was worth sharing because it is unusual.

      @@wildhomevideos Footage and audio was great to me 😀I'm really into interesting animal behaviors and social interactions. @@PeekAtWildlife That is a great piece of knowledge. People, including us, are totally ignorant as to what is really going on it the minds of the insects and animals. Lovely concert!! :) These birds are both good mimickers, it appears here that the Butcherbird is mimicking the Magpie!

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      He is still singing like a butcherbird but certainly gets triggered at the same time as the Magpie. We have never seen them singing in such close proximity but often hear them sing at the same time. They caught me on the hop and I did not have a chance to get set up so I only got poor footage and worse Audio. I had to fiddle a lot with the equaliser and gain to get it like that and even so there is a lot of distortion so you can't hear the background sounds. There was actually a butcherbird somewhere far away calling and both the Magpie and Butcherbird would sing in response. That is what they are both paying attention to after they sing. I have often seen that the Magpies start singing in response to a butcherbird in the distance. Have you noticed how the Magpies always listen for a response after they sing? The Kookaburras are the same. Hey what did you think of the toes when the second Magpie sings near the end😁

      Well... we don't know anyone that has seen them sing so close together. And we have lived here nearly 25 years and never seen them together like that. Maybe in a park in the city where birds have only limited space and have to share it with other species this sort of thing happens. But I think in the wild it is quite unusual. Hey Rocky, how is your owl compilation going. After our last communication we have added your channel to the "Remarkable Channels" list on our home page to give you more motivation. Has it worked???

    • @Rockymtnchick
      @Rockymtnchick ปีที่แล้ว

      I finally did my first owl compilation! Your comment was the motivation I needed and the realization that it was going to be Superbowl Sunday (aka superb owl Sunday 🤣) was the deadline I needed. It took me all weekend and I didn’t have time to add photos, but I got it done! Yay! Thank you for the encouragement 😁 I did not know about the remarkable channels, that’s the first I’ve heard of it, so thank you for adding me! I wonder if I have that feature, I still haven’t been given the community tab for some reason!

      @@Rockymtnchick Hey that's great Rocky! I just watched it. It is really good. Superb Owl... hehehe. Great idea! I sympathise with the slog. I have just published another orchid video and am slogging away at the next one. I am trying to get as many done as I can before the orchid season starts here. It is starting to feel like a job and I would rather be doing something else😅You can make a "remarkable channels" section in your home page, if you want. In your TH-cam studio in the left column under Dashboard click on "customisation" and just add a section and select the channels you want in there. You can call it what you like. I just thought "remarkable channels" fitting.
