Thanks for the advice bud :D would have been better if i knew all that before entering the boat though lol! Fair play to all you kayakers! Takes massive balls!
The concerning thing about this video was the poor rescue attempt by your fellow boaters. The tangled rope throw fail and the fact the person with the best chance of rescuing you, put the paddle over your life. It may have been relatively calm water but you being a newbie should not have been left unattended for so long because you were likely to make mistakes, which you did, and could have quickly ended up in a bad situation.
Well done that was a great effort. I think your mate might have been misleading you with the class though ;) first thing to remember as a newbie is to forget the kayak get yourself to safety first :) As for the rope man. He throws like a girl but had you caught the rope and held onto the kayak you more than likely would've ended up pulling him in also ;) Looks like a great course and fair play to your mate he was nice and calm throughout.
I carried on watching and noticed your biggest mistake was the you kept releasing the paddle with one of your hands. When you do that, you loose all control of the boat which means that in a rapid, the turbulent water is controlling where you go. :) I hate to be critical, but I also think that you capsized after the rapid because you turned too sharply without lifting your left knee slightly to allow the flow of the water to go under your boat. My advice would be DO NOT let go of your paddle in the middle of a rapid, however timid it is, and maybe try some bracing to stop yourself tipping. Other than that, good work buddy!
He never re directed the boat at any point , right before he tipped the flow of water was already pushing him left and he choose to put the paddle down on the left instead down on the right hard for a quick shift and let it go . Biggest problem he never slowed down
Hey bro if you enjoy this type of thing e.g. Kayaking in white water with zero training. Just go to a white water centre and film there man it is full on and less dangerous
I wouldn’t say you almost died by any means, you capsized and floated down a bit, having said that massive respect for trying that as a first time Kayaker, and I made the same mistake as this guy, kayaked a lot but first time on white water was the London Olympic course, made it down first time ok by luck/adrenaline second time got dragged out without my shoes and almost lost my trousers, haven’t hit a grade 4 again 🤣
I remember when I was a lot younger. I thought I could surf anything. The first time I went to the Nottingham Slalom Course. I jumped in my boat and tried to surf the top wave under the bridge. I hadn't realised it was quite difficult to get off it once you were on it. Eventually after trying for some time I ended up capsizing and then swimming. So my first run down the course was feet first. Learnt a lot that day :)
I may be underestimating the river but what's the big deal if you fall out? Doesn't seem the most complicated sport out there, given it can be dangerous in some scenario's
It's more dangerous than you realize. What gets a lot of people is getting pinned by rocks. People get their feet caught in rocks on the bottom, which once they can't move forward, the pressure of all that water is massive and pushes them under. It doesn't seem like anything when you're flowing downstream with the water, but try resisting a heavy volume river and you'll feel how much power it has. Another pinning situation is the large exposed rock on the sides and in the middle in some places can have undercuts so if the current pushes you under them, you can be trapped again. In rivers with more boiling water and falls, there can be a back current right after a fall of water, so if water is rushing over a rock and it's foaming on the other side, the water on the surface is usually pushing back upstream. This means if you fall in the boiling 'hole' you can became trapped and unable to swim out, eventually to get tired and sucked under.
No it isn't. Most of this river is 2/3 but the bit where he capsized, Serpent's Tail, is grade 3. There were some recent floods that changed the hydrology and it's now considered 3/4 depending on water levels. Good effort to the guy who paddled this but your mate needs a lot of work on rescue skills. S,T,V,E!
Nathan Howson Seriously! No rescue attempts at all, lets him float downriver for three minutes instead, could have gotten him out of the water immediately by letting him grab his boat and maybe the paddle, then gotten after the boat. Does the boat even have float bags? Dunno, really can't stand watching this guy. He's like haha look I'm still sitting in my boat and you are swimming, haha... amateurs really. Swimming in a rapid like this for the first time can be intimidating and you would want to get out of the water soon. Instead of having some guy paddling next to you doing nothing for three minutes.
I agree with Sebastian, your buddy is either clueless or a bit of a worm. You could have been out of the water 3 minutes earlier had you stopped climbing onto your swamped boat and swam (dragging the boat behind, believe me, I've done it lots) to the nearest eddy/slack water, which was everywhere. Instead your pal let you cling in ignominious fear whilst parading you like a rescued kitten before onlookers through a placid pool. Also that last rapid was a solid class 3 drop. Was amazed you made it as far as you did, tho , congrats. With some work you could become a decent boater, but learn basic self rescue first!! Sheeez...
Ah mate you could've made it, you were so close! I reckon its a bit nasty of your mates to get you into a ruddy playboat for your first paddle down grade two though, that's just cruel XD Much too low volume for a newbie. Friends could've at least got you to keep paddling and the like, paddling gives stability :) and hold onto the paddle!
I have paddled this rapid many times seen you haven’t posted any kayaking for a whil so hop this didn’t put you off but my advice that is a hard rapid for first time but defo you need a creek boat first don’t let go of paddle and avoid the curling wave else it brings you on to the wrong edge
He really needed to just keep a hold of his paddle with both hands which in my experience from when I was younger is very confidence inspiring and helps anyway
oh man, this is such a good video !.. at first watching it was like ahh this isn't that bad.. about 3 minutes in I go down and read a few comments and was thinking man this isn't that bad .. then I get to 7:40marker and was think ya his friend is at least telling him what sides to go on .. still don't see his friend as a dick...then at 8:05 was like oh that's a big wave.. then a few seconds later ... oh fk :O ... ya I can see this not being fun anymore lmao... if this does happen tho should stay on top to float cause if it takes on too much water it will sink.. I don't paddle WW tho .. intense.. wonder if he leaned more forward off that hop would have not flipped under
As an advanced paddler this is so amusing to watch but I would ask why you took him down a river he is not capable of handling ?
In a very unstable boat!
Thanks for the advice bud :D would have been better if i knew all that before entering the boat though lol! Fair play to all you kayakers! Takes massive balls!
I thought you did a fantastic job for no training. You didn't panic or seem scared. Bravo!
Dave Strum thanks buddy 🙌
dainehaney91 You bet!
Dave Strum I agree

2021... felt the same pain very recently... tried it twice. Serpent 2. Me 0.

Don't let go of the paddle! xD

Rory Chalmers he's not going to have a clue what you're on about
This river is where I did my whitewater safety and rescue training
but even then we didnt run serpents tail
flip the capsized boat up side down in the water it be easier to lift out with out lifting water with It
He never re directed the boat at any point , right before he tipped the flow of water was already pushing him left and he choose to put the paddle down on the left instead down on the right hard for a quick shift and let it go . Biggest problem he never slowed down

playboats very tippy for a beginner, try low bracing or edging
This is a grade 2 :)
Euan Odd if even

HAHAHA! More like class II bro! and that was a disgrace of a throwbag toss...
A little instruction and learning to roll would have gone along way
This was also my first river haha i was lucky to not go over in that bit
serpents tail i mean
Llangollen?
Tom Docherty yes mate, serpents tail I think they call it?
Ah mate you could've made it, you were so close! haha probably a bit late for my advice to be of any use
Danul83 haha so close but no cigar! cheers buddy.. felt so dangerous inside that boat 😂

🤣 Cheers pal, took up driving instead 😂
@@dainehaney91 funnily enough I went the other way, from track days to white water kayaking!
as a paddler always wear a carabiner
He really needed to just keep a hold of his paddle with both hands which in my experience from when I was younger is very confidence inspiring and helps anyway
You should probably get in the tub and practice holding your breath until you're up to 30 minutes or so.
wait wait wait you know that the world record is 24 min
the thing you are looking for is 5 min if not less
🤣🤣

Helps if you don't stop paddling...
Why would you do this without training? The inevitable happened.
Liquid Adventuring
my so called friends said it would be fun!
funny to us yes but f...k me very nasty for you....... thats y i bought sit on top kayaks for my kids. good luck bro.
Grade two at best
Can't even self rescue, definitely should not be on that river.
🤣 Tell me about it
