Well, this is definitely The Island. Man, if you get any information you have to let us know. I'm quickly becoming obsessed. I've watched this one scene like ten times and it's breathtaking. It's obviously been shot and cut. It must be out there some way. I must have it.
What amazes me is that it for the most part is not acting, these men knew the fear shown here intimately. Their friend and fellow workshopper Sharkie had been sent to Robben Island (The Island referred too in the Title) months before its first production. They lived in fear of arrest daily, the making of this play was illegal during Apartheid in 1973. They lived in captivity, not literally, but under Apartheid they were not free. This is more of an outpouring of those emotions than acting. It is true Art, a noble act.
Brilliant. I am working on a documentary about The Space Theatre in Cape town in which this play was first shown. I will try to track down the film. I know The Royal Court did a season of three of Fugard's plays "Statements...", "The Island" and "Sizwe Banzi is Dead." Thanks for the clip.
You're welcome. In the documentary, the director puts versions of this Hans Zimmer music over several television play excerpts though I think some excerpts are shown untouched. I can imagine it's quite a cheeky use of such stripped down drama, but I'm very glad he did it for this piece. BTW, in the film's credits, the rights to this recording of "The Island" were for RTÉ - the Irish national broadcaster. But, I could find no mention of it on their website or anywhere else.
True. In Fugard, A., Walder, D. (ed. and intro.), (2000a) Township Plays, Oxford and New York: Oxford UP, p. 194 in the information at the beginning of The Island it says: 'The play was televised with the original cast for Radio-Telefis-Eireann (director: Louis Lentin) after a performance directed by Barney Simon at the Gate Theatre, Dublin, in April 1986.' Hope that answers your questions!
Thanks for this - I'm doing an MRes on Fugard and his collaborators and this has been highly useful in seeing it in performance, albeit with music - contradictory to Fugard's Grotowskian aesthetics
I just realised you are referring to the bleeping out of some words. I had forgotten them. Sorry, not my doing. They were in the original TV broadcast. I expect they are not on the DVD version of Tony Palmer's film.
Yes this clip is an unedited excerpt from the Tony Palmer's film "Falls the Shadow: The Life and Times of Athol Fugard" (2012). For more background see the other comments. No sign of a copy of the original video yet.
Sorry. I can't help you. Using the small bit of info on these excerpts in the documentary, I tried to find out more from UK TV databases, but couldn't find a definite name for this TV play. I will try again and if I find it I'll post another reply to your question. See description above for all the info I have currently. TV plays of some other Fugard plays are available on YT and elsewhere.
The clip above is captured from a broadcast of the documentary on a UK channel. There's nothing can do about it. It may have been during the daytime before the 9pm theshold, before which certain content (such as the language bleeped out above) is not allowed.
BeirutWedding If you mean the Tony Palmer documentary film "Falls the Shadow: The Life and Times of Athol Fugard" (2012), then I expect it is commercially available. As to the Teleplay of "The Island", I have not been able to locate it nor get accurate details about when it was broadcast or where, but if the footage was used in this documentary, then it is available, but maybe only through commercial TV clip libraries etc. As mentioned above in the documentary credit the rights seem to lie with RTÉ my national broadcaster. I searched on both their archive and Sales site to no avail. I may enquire further.
Thanks for the reference. It might even be something I can track down some day as I'm in Ireland. There was quite a lot of popular activism and solidarity against Apartheid in Ireland in the 80s which might explains how the production came to the Gate.
So you got this video from the documentary? I feel like if it exists some where in full form I have to see it. I can't stop watching this scene. This is ACTING.
Zimmer's music is as distracting as ever, it works in the Thin Red Line, but not here for me. However, what incredible performances. I wish I could see the whole thing
John Kani is incredibly underrated.
Such Great Acting! The scene is so well written and the actors let you feel all the emotions. Very good performance! #missillig

Speechless.
This is amazing acting, from the quivering of the lips, to the pained resignation in their eyes...

Brilliant writing - but why the 'beeps'? Hate censorship - I am an adult.

***** Is there anyway to get the video of the entire production? I would pay a lot of money for that.

I saw this play in Toronto back in 2000 and have been dying to find it on DVD...anyone know?
Jay Rose Did you ever get an answer to this question?
I did not...any info?
How do i download a full video
Yes, unfortunately, due to an automated claim by someone representing the musical copyright holder the video is blocked in Germany.
Is there a way to access the full play?
You're welcome. Good luck with the search.
Unedited but censored. Unfortunate.
At The Market Theatre, it's opening next week on the 16th call me for discounted ticket prices
1 1 1 diye mi?
I would have rotten in hell if I didn't leave a like🙌
