Probably my favourite thing about Vi is that most of her real fights are never even. She's always fighting someone with mutations, or augmentations when all she has is her skill, and she still ends up coming out on top just through pure grit

There is a lot of layers to this series and this fight and that's what makes the show so good.
Agree, this fight feels more grounded. Honestly whenever I saw Vi's insane hulk-buster gauntlets or Jayce's ridiculous hammer it brought me out of the story. As a non LoL player I immediately picked up that that was the video-gamey part.
One thing I love about this fight is that it shows just how Vi adapts instantly. Ordinary logic dictates that when fighting someone hand to hand, you go for their left side, that's usually their weaker arm. It's why left-handed boxers generally have a slight edge in the real world. But as soon as she finds that Sevika's left arm is actually her stronger one, Vi adapts and is constantly trying to move to Sevika's right side. An accusation that gets lobbed at Vi sometimes is that she isn't smart, and that she thinks with her fists. This is kind of true, but at the same time, it does make her very good at thinking on her feet during a fight, and adapting her strategy so that she can come out on top.
Adapting is one thing but she still lacks technic and as they would say, she keeps blocking punches with her face. She knows how to throw hands but not how to block them cause she's always been impatient.
Different kinds of intelligences exist. You know some people have a gift for sports and physical activities. Vi is one of those people, she's a street-smart person as well as a good leader. In any case, she's definitely not stupid.
Heck, I'd say the ability to think on your feet is SO underrated in general. I've only seen great athletes, most especially GOAT-ed athletes like Kobe, Ali, and Michael Jordan, pull that off *continuously*
Sevika took a lot of damage in this show and still stood to fight another time, I don't know whether it's because of Shimmer or she's just resilient as hell.

0:05 go frame by frame and look at Sevika's eyeballs. She noticed Vi coming. I mean how could you not notice a whole person charging at you on the side, right? Still, that doesn't mean you get to react in time since you're getting surprise-attacked. It's a very realistic detail that nobody could pick up in first watch, yet they did it. Amazing!
the best part about vi’s fighting style is how patient she is and how she waits for the other person to strike to counter it. like she’s anticipating their move and thinking 2 steps further on how to combat that move. for example at 0:58 she *literally* watches sevika and counters every move she makes. love watching her fight, it’s like she’s playing chess but with her fists
You can tell that she’s been training for years, but also it’s realistic because she also takes a few hits rather than being like this invincible fighter

Silco creating a controlled drug epidemic that resulted in the enforcers being pushed out of Zaun by mutants isnt good for zaun's society or life, but it was a more meaningful progression of the independence struggle that anything Vander had done since losing the war and allowing the enforcers to treat Zaunite civilians like trash without retribution. Nothing Silco, Sevika and even Jinx do is for greed or cruelty it all serves a long term purpose, one that wouldn't be necessary if Piltover treated the underground fairly in the first place.

Ive seen this move like two other times in fiction, one being real steel and the other being the qte Kiryu vs Kuze. Its so simple yet sexy as hell when the slip the punch while uppercutting
2:05 if you go through this frame by frame you can actually see Vi flail her arms to brace for the fall from her double kick which is just shows the insane level of detail they gave to this show.
The tiny details in this show keep me coming back over and over, like how right at the beginning, you can see Sevika shift her eyes to react to the incoming blow a split second before it hits
2:54 something I didn’t notice upon first watch; the animators go out of their way to show you how this mechanic works a good 3x before this particular moment. The “vial” of shimmer protrudes from her mechanical shoulder, then it “injects” by shooting down and presumably into her. So when this moment comes, you know that A.) Savika is about to take a whole injection just for this punch to Vi’s face (which would likely punch her head off, given after what we just saw Savika do with the barrel) B.) the audience can then identify that Cait shoots directly through the “vial”, denying Savika her “power up”, yet sparing her life so they could possibly subdue her for questioning. When I first watched, and then Cait’s follow up line of “I’m an excellent shot.” I was like “… SIS, HOW?” As she didn’t blast Savika in the face with any of her three shots. But now, after paying closer attention, I realize the animators spelled it out perfectly. Caitlyn is an excellent shot.
Caitlyn's always been like that, if you check the "warriors" animatic, you can see Caitlyn instead of shooting these Goblin-looking dudes in the head to stop them from releasing Urgot, She shoots them in the leg or captures them in nets both sparing their life and subduing them (even towards urgot, she only set up Vi for that Uppercut)
I noticed Vi gets surprised a couple times by the inhuman range of motion Sevika's artificial arm has. First when Sevika punches hard backwards while pinned against a wall. Then when Sevika catches her in the armlock by bending her elbow entirely backwards. Really shows the designers and animators thought through the implications of what a prosthesis designed for combat could do when it's not limited to having the same joint structure as a human arm.
The other interesting thing is that if you've ever boxed with a bunch of women about Vi's size they all look like her. They're not big, but they're wiry and they have muscle in the right places. Their legs are also fucking huge.

Wanna make the point that this is probably the cleanest example of a skilled striker fighting a scrapper I've ever seen. Sevika doesn't have any feel in that arm so she doesn't really know where it is. Vi doesn't have the power said arm has, so she stays on the inside where the power can't wind up and hit her. Even so, Sevika goes straight through her several times and does a ton of damage really quickly. When she gets injured, she moves to a position where Sevika can't just grab and drag her around and uses the environment either side of her. Note that in boxing your strongest punches are either a counter straight with your back hand, a counter lead hook, a back hand uppercut or a full back hand hook, because all of those punches involve full body rotation. So her moving between two walls where all her body weight can be put into shoving Sevika into a wall is a genius manuever. Then she opens up with knees and Sevika is already completely out of it at this point, but Vi is knackered and can't really fight any longer so she summons up everything she still has and throws herself at her. Not only is this how an actual fight would go in this situation even accounting for their insanely superhuman endurance (you have like.. 2 minutes, tops, even if you're trained) but it's extremely well put together. The only thing keeping Sevika in this fight at all is the shimmer, and even that is really obvious - she gets angry and adrenaline filled when she spikes it on the floor for example.
I love how Vi goes for Sevika's right side. Naturally (for most people) the right side being the dominant one is the strongest and left side being weaker. But since Sevika has a literal robotic arm, her weakest side is now the right side.
I like that vi isn’t completely weak without her gauntlets, but the difference in strength is definitely noticeable. They don’t make her so OP that the strength in her punches is throwing sevika across the room, she throws realistic punches for someone that strong. Maybe they’re not as flashy as the gauntlets, but this is still a good fight nonetheless, thanks to the sound effects and the movements, we still know that those punches are painful, even if they’re not fueled by technology. Idk, I just love arcane man
Vi is a better fighter than Sevika, not by much, but Sevika's over reliance on shimmer and her Replacement arm, as well as her definite underestimation of Vi doomed her in this fight
Love the small detail of how Vi goads Sevika into a tight space knowing that it will give her an advantage after spending a lot of times in prison and getting used to fighting in very tight spaces. It shows how despite being brash and impulsive, Vi is a very tactical fighter, not just no brains an all brawn. This is just a small detail that you can easily miss if you don't pay attention but the writers thought of it
This proves how powerful Vi as a character really is. She can defeat her opponent even if they have chemtech. And even when she was a teenager she took on multiple brutes that work for Silco.
I absolutely love how the animators differentiated between human and machine. You can just clearly see how Sevika's arm is actually a robot, while the rest is human. The scene where Sevika gets carried up by her arm is so well done.
I like how they give each other a moment to recover, I remember doing that in sparring... wow it's like lets make no mistake who's got this fight. No excuses we always go at eachother at our most recovered best.

My favorite thing about this is that when Sevika started getting back up, Vi backed up into the narrow alley and then IMMEDIATELY started slamming Sev into the walls, using the space to her advantage. Good stuff.
Arguably the best fight scene in the series. The way she moves and counters, brilliant animation. Unbelievable detail in her technique. Vi is my favourite character in the show.
I'd love to see how Sevika would fight someone other than Vi. Vi is such a worthy opponent that Sevika had no other choice than to adapt to her boxing style. I hope we get to see her fight a group of weaker opponents in s2. I just wanna see this glorious woman go wildddd
My favorite thing about this fight is that both characters get noticeably more tired as the fight progresses. Having done martial arts myself, I can confirm that a real fight drains your stamina FAST.
You can tell whoever choreographed this fight was a big fan of boxing. 0:55 body blow. 0:59 shot to the solar plexus to knock the wind out of sevika, followed by a right hook. looking closely right after, Vi parries Sevika's hook to have it hit her shoulder, checks her with a jab to the jaw. reads sevika's next jab, grabs her arm, hits her with a cross counter uppercut to the jaw again. jab after that, sevika puts too much of her weight into it and loses her footing, Vi immediately goes for two solid liver blows, hook to the cheek. those jaw shots have sevika rattled, so Vi gets a whole ass wind up punch to the jaw yet again, and Sevika goes down. If that were literally anyone else without access to Shimmer, that probably would have been the end of the fight. She nailed Sevika in 3 major areas, and that's not counting the brutal knee to the jaw at the start. And when Sevika starts to play dirty, Vi starts playing dirty as well. The first half of the fight was good form, but the second half of the fight Vi says screw it and gets just as violent as Sevika.
Agree 100%. Sevika is actually a more interesting character than Vi, however shes not a fighter, rather an excellent manager, so she knows what shes doing, thats implied in the series. But just because she gets a cool cybernetic arm doesnt mean she can fight.
Actually sevika doesn't look interested on fighting vi she just under estimated vi but she didn't know vi can fight like Vander that's why she isn't serious at fighting vi and actually 2nd round we find that sevika is actually dominating the fight even when vi is already using overpowered gauntlets she only lose because of the shield thing vi un intentionally made so I think sevika is also good at fighting even for old age
God what a masterclass in fight choreography, cinematography, and animation. The way every shot is framed, the strategy behind each punch and dodge... this is probably the best fight scene I've ever seen. It's up there with Max vs. Furiosa from Fury Road.
1:01 the uppercut Vi throws from under Sevika's arm, it's so fuckin SLICK. Anyone know if there is a name for that move? I've only ever seen it once before, in Real Steel of all places.
When you're fighting someone with a major advantage over you, you have to fight smart. Sevika has strength, durability, and several other factors from having that arm that Vi can't match. So she focuses on the areas she can beat Sevika in. She's younger, she's smaller, and she's faster. Sevika's mechanical arm is always going to be slower than a regular one. Since the arm is only really dangerous when it hits, Vi puts her energy into dodging and landing small blows to wear her down. As well as numerous blows meant to discombobulate Sevika until she can't lift the arm any more. Vi isn't just a tough fighter, she's a master brawler.
"Outside slip, uppercut counter." I agree, it's a beautiful boxing technique. Vi uses her left hand to hold Sevika's arm in place, but boxers typically leave their left hand free so they can follow the uppercut with a left hook. 0:57 Vi's boxing is insane! She started her combo with a body punch, followed by a right hook, a parry to a jab followed by a vicious uppercut I had to repeat the shot to see where the fuck it came from, let alone Sevika. Sevika then threw a hook that Vi sidestep to, only for her to deliver a vicious liver punch, I am honestly surprised that Sevika was standing after all that, but she was finally put down by whatever that jumping punch is. I really don't know what you could call Vi's fighting style, i guess is some sort of street boxing as you can see her mixing a few kicks here and there. Edit: after the sidestep it wasn't just one liver punch, she did two! and I forgot to mention a final hook as the cherry on top. The producers put all the boxing types of punches in the span of 8 seconds, Vi is a legend.

What I love about this fight is when someone gets punched in the face, the saliva glands in your mouth begin to disfunction and produce saliva consistently, this happens in real life, when someone is punched in the face, it slowly goes numb, and the glands lose feel and function to, thus it causes them to produce saliva at consistent levels, because naturally your brain thinks that your mouth is dry and makes the glands to work "over time."

Typically a decently strong blow to someone's head when they don't expect it will make them go unconscious. By the fact that Sevika was hardly affected by a full on knee in her blind side just shows what a beast Vi was up against. Sevica's strength is inhuman.
I loved how this show had actual impact behind each swing, like they have legitimate weight and force behind each blow. That isn't something you get much in media nowadays, especially animated stuff. Just yet another reason I loved this show so much.
That first bit about Vi's sister going by the name Jinx and working for Silco was to throw Vi off guard so she could stab her in the chest, that second bit about Jinx being like a daughter to Silco was just to twist the metaphorical knife and inflict more mental pain and anguish.
I think thats why Vi kinda laid off her for a second, granted Vi was tired and leaning against the wall as well, but the disrespect that Sevika showed by jamming Vis face into the wall with her mech forearm earned her a knee to the junk 🤣
Anyone else think the arm reveal is a nod to Fullmetal Alchemist? Can't be a coincidence to toss off a cape before a fight in slow motion to reveal a mechanical arm.

I guess it wouldn't make difference because if she did killed Vi here, she (Sevika) probably would never let Jinx know that Vi was still alive, and this would consolidate her (Jinx) thought that her sister died after "abandoning" her.

Sevika would need to close the distance, which is unlikely in head on fight. Even if she did, Jinx's reflexes are INSANE, judging by how she fought the firelights.

When I first watched, and then Cait’s follow up line of “I’m an excellent shot.” I was like “… SIS, HOW?” As she didn’t blast Savika in the face with any of her three shots. But now, after paying closer attention, I realize the animators spelled it out perfectly. Caitlyn is an excellent shot.

Caitlyn's always been like that, if you check the "warriors" animatic, you can see Caitlyn instead of shooting these Goblin-looking dudes in the head to stop them from releasing Urgot, She shoots them in the leg or captures them in nets both sparing their life and subduing them (even towards urgot, she only set up Vi for that Uppercut)

I noticed Vi gets surprised a couple times by the inhuman range of motion Sevika's artificial arm has. First when Sevika punches hard backwards while pinned against a wall. Then when Sevika catches her in the armlock by bending her elbow entirely backwards. Really shows the designers and animators thought through the implications of what a prosthesis designed for combat could do when it's not limited to having the same joint structure as a human arm.
I appreciate how so many of the women in this show are built like a truck. It makes their fight scenes look so much more convincing.
The other interesting thing is that if you've ever boxed with a bunch of women about Vi's size they all look like her. They're not big, but they're wiry and they have muscle in the right places. Their legs are also fucking huge.
Even though the show is animated you can just feel the fatigue and the impact from all the punches very good work

The fight choreography in this series is absolutely outstanding.
Wanna make the point that this is probably the cleanest example of a skilled striker fighting a scrapper I've ever seen. Sevika doesn't have any feel in that arm so she doesn't really know where it is. Vi doesn't have the power said arm has, so she stays on the inside where the power can't wind up and hit her. Even so, Sevika goes straight through her several times and does a ton of damage really quickly.
When she gets injured, she moves to a position where Sevika can't just grab and drag her around and uses the environment either side of her. Note that in boxing your strongest punches are either a counter straight with your back hand, a counter lead hook, a back hand uppercut or a full back hand hook, because all of those punches involve full body rotation. So her moving between two walls where all her body weight can be put into shoving Sevika into a wall is a genius manuever.
Then she opens up with knees and Sevika is already completely out of it at this point, but Vi is knackered and can't really fight any longer so she summons up everything she still has and throws herself at her.
Not only is this how an actual fight would go in this situation even accounting for their insanely superhuman endurance (you have like.. 2 minutes, tops, even if you're trained) but it's extremely well put together. The only thing keeping Sevika in this fight at all is the shimmer, and even that is really obvious - she gets angry and adrenaline filled when she spikes it on the floor for example.
I love how Vi goes for Sevika's right side. Naturally (for most people) the right side being the dominant one is the strongest and left side being weaker. But since Sevika has a literal robotic arm, her weakest side is now the right side.

I like that vi isn’t completely weak without her gauntlets, but the difference in strength is definitely noticeable. They don’t make her so OP that the strength in her punches is throwing sevika across the room, she throws realistic punches for someone that strong. Maybe they’re not as flashy as the gauntlets, but this is still a good fight nonetheless, thanks to the sound effects and the movements, we still know that those punches are painful, even if they’re not fueled by technology. Idk, I just love arcane man
Vi is a better fighter than Sevika, not by much, but Sevika's over reliance on shimmer and her Replacement arm, as well as her definite underestimation of Vi doomed her in this fight
Love the small detail of how Vi goads Sevika into a tight space knowing that it will give her an advantage after spending a lot of times in prison and getting used to fighting in very tight spaces. It shows how despite being brash and impulsive, Vi is a very tactical fighter, not just no brains an all brawn. This is just a small detail that you can easily miss if you don't pay attention but the writers thought of it

This proves how powerful Vi as a character really is. She can defeat her opponent even if they have chemtech. And even when she was a teenager she took on multiple brutes that work for Silco.
I absolutely love how the animators differentiated between human and machine. You can just clearly see how Sevika's arm is actually a robot, while the rest is human. The scene where Sevika gets carried up by her arm is so well done.
I like how they give each other a moment to recover, I remember doing that in sparring... wow it's like lets make no mistake who's got this fight. No excuses we always go at eachother at our most recovered best.
Sevika is so badass. Riot pls make her a champion!

My favorite thing about this fight is that both characters get noticeably more tired as the fight progresses. Having done martial arts myself, I can confirm that a real fight drains your stamina FAST.
You can tell whoever choreographed this fight was a big fan of boxing.
0:55 body blow. 0:59 shot to the solar plexus to knock the wind out of sevika, followed by a right hook. looking closely right after, Vi parries Sevika's hook to have it hit her shoulder, checks her with a jab to the jaw. reads sevika's next jab, grabs her arm, hits her with a cross counter uppercut to the jaw again. jab after that, sevika puts too much of her weight into it and loses her footing, Vi immediately goes for two solid liver blows, hook to the cheek. those jaw shots have sevika rattled, so Vi gets a whole ass wind up punch to the jaw yet again, and Sevika goes down. If that were literally anyone else without access to Shimmer, that probably would have been the end of the fight. She nailed Sevika in 3 major areas, and that's not counting the brutal knee to the jaw at the start.
And when Sevika starts to play dirty, Vi starts playing dirty as well. The first half of the fight was good form, but the second half of the fight Vi says screw it and gets just as violent as Sevika.
Honestly this one tops any hand-to-hand combat scenes I've seen in movies. Very real, very technique wise, very detailed. A masterpiece

Agree 100%. Sevika is actually a more interesting character than Vi, however shes not a fighter, rather an excellent manager, so she knows what shes doing, thats implied in the series. But just because she gets a cool cybernetic arm doesnt mean she can fight.
Actually sevika doesn't look interested on fighting vi she just under estimated vi but she didn't know vi can fight like Vander that's why she isn't serious at fighting vi and actually 2nd round we find that sevika is actually dominating the fight even when vi is already using overpowered gauntlets she only lose because of the shield thing vi un intentionally made so I think sevika is also good at fighting even for old age
God what a masterclass in fight choreography, cinematography, and animation. The way every shot is framed, the strategy behind each punch and dodge... this is probably the best fight scene I've ever seen. It's up there with Max vs. Furiosa from Fury Road.
I just noticed that at 0:54 when Sevika throws a liver shot, her arm flips an additional piece of metal over her knuckles for extra oomph.

It's called a bolo uppercut. Gervonto Davis threw one to knock out his opponent, Leo Santa Cruz, in a real fight.
It is a difficult but not uncommon counter in boxing.
When you're fighting someone with a major advantage over you, you have to fight smart. Sevika has strength, durability, and several other factors from having that arm that Vi can't match. So she focuses on the areas she can beat Sevika in. She's younger, she's smaller, and she's faster. Sevika's mechanical arm is always going to be slower than a regular one. Since the arm is only really dangerous when it hits, Vi puts her energy into dodging and landing small blows to wear her down. As well as numerous blows meant to discombobulate Sevika until she can't lift the arm any more.
Vi isn't just a tough fighter, she's a master brawler.

I agree, it's a beautiful boxing technique. Vi uses her left hand to hold Sevika's arm in place, but boxers typically leave their left hand free so they can follow the uppercut with a left hook.

You slip on the outside with a counterstep forward then throw on the lead hand. It landed because Sevika doesn't keep her hands up.
The first ten seconds were one of the best ways to start a fight that i have ever seen
0:57 Vi's boxing is insane! She started her combo with a body punch, followed by a right hook, a parry to a jab followed by a vicious uppercut I had to repeat the shot to see where the fuck it came from, let alone Sevika. Sevika then threw a hook that Vi sidestep to, only for her to deliver a vicious liver punch, I am honestly surprised that Sevika was standing after all that, but she was finally put down by whatever that jumping punch is.
I really don't know what you could call Vi's fighting style, i guess is some sort of street boxing as you can see her mixing a few kicks here and there.
Edit: after the sidestep it wasn't just one liver punch, she did two! and I forgot to mention a final hook as the cherry on top. The producers put all the boxing types of punches in the span of 8 seconds, Vi is a legend.

What I love about this fight is when someone gets punched in the face, the saliva glands in your mouth begin to disfunction and produce saliva consistently, this happens in real life, when someone is punched in the face, it slowly goes numb, and the glands lose feel and function to, thus it causes them to produce saliva at consistent levels, because naturally your brain thinks that your mouth is dry and makes the glands to work "over time."
I don’t know which is better, this fight scene or the ‘you’re gonna help me up, cupcake?’ dialogue that comes after. This whole show was just scene after amazing scene
Sevika's head is one of the most solid things in the universe
Typically a decently strong blow to someone's head when they don't expect it will make them go unconscious. By the fact that Sevika was hardly affected by a full on knee in her blind side just shows what a beast Vi was up against. Sevica's strength is inhuman.

I guess it wouldn't make difference because if she did killed Vi here, she (Sevika) probably would never let Jinx know that Vi was still alive, and this would consolidate her (Jinx) thought that her sister died after "abandoning" her.
