So when I was younger, our dogs associated the word “stargate” to tv time in the basement, to a point where their ears would go up and get super excited. Now that those dogs have passed, our new dogs have learned from us joking about going to see stargate, that that word is basement time. (FYI: dogs are called Ronnie from andromeda and Elvie from expanse)
Really good chat hope you can get more actors on like this really want to see what the actor of rush thinks etc and others like on a indeph level of the show.
I just finished my second watch of Universe yesterday evening and this came out, So much content to do with Universe right now actually. Huffman was great as Abadon in Supernatural but T.J. was the goat.
Great interview. It's really great hearing stories, behind the scenes about the cast. How they felt when making episodes etc, the stories. I really hope we get a conclusion and I think like they did with clone Beckett, they should freeze TJ in the pod to slow down her disease until they find the cure.
Although SGU was SciFi, it was more of a "social drama" in that there was far more emphasis on how the members of the crew were interacting with each other in almost impossible circumstances. That is what (for me anyway) was most interesting because you were able to see how interpersonal relationships between the crew members developed and sometimes degenerated. If only one of the 3 gates make a follow-on comeback my vote would be for SGU. The crew were in stasis pods but WHAT IF the pods malfunctioned and the crew grew older. Some survived (actors available for the next series) and others did not make it. And a freak gate connection could bring onboard a bunch of "new blood" (so to speak) to be able to flesh out the story-line. The whole "mentor" thing by the originals to the new crew could be fascinating if done with taste and could produce comedy, conflicts, rebellion and all sorts of other good stuff.
I think the trip into the next galaxy was going to take decades (?), and the "kid" (Eli Wallace) not only growths up further (which would help with a return to a new SGU season), but he also learns the ancient language and ship controls much much better, so when the stasis pods start malfunctioning, he can limit the aging down while they still remain unconscious. So, when 3x01 starts, and they wake up in the next Galaxy, they are a bit older, but Eli is a grown Man, and can teach them about the capabilities of the ship they had no discovered previously. All the problems Eli faced would come in as backstory pieces while he slowly opens up during the trip through this new galaxy (perhaps a truly large one, making it take longer before skipping to a next one).
SGU was the favourite of my SG series and I loved every moment of it. I really don't understand the angst that has been thrown at it, even from true SG fans. I enjoyed the drama of it and the fact it was a constant story rather than individual episodes wholly and solely. It had everything a good sci-fi series has(look at The Expanse and how that worked) and each regular character had a great storyline through both seasons. I don't think that anyone else would have been able to play TJ as well as Alaina and the same goes for any of the characters in the show. One of the best cast shows of modern sci-fi.
This was a great interview! She's 100% correct if that's you you would have came out a few years later it would have been an awesome Netflix pickup. It's been a while but if I remember correctly what originally put SGU on such a bad footing was some casting description that came out that made it seem like they might be trying to capitalize on Twilight & other popular moody teenage/young adult dramas.
Always like SGU. Alaina contributed the necessary empathy that helped to gel all the sharper elements of the show together. Adding such a beautiful sweet face didn't hurt, either.
I usually show people SGU if they haven't seen any stargate before, or tried the first couple of episodes of SG1 and couldn't get into it. Also, completely agree that it was the same writers for SGU, unlike what happens with other sci-fi shows.
I didn't like SGU originally. It wasn't until 5 years after the show ended that I watched it and I loved it as a stand alone series. I'm hoping Amazon can wrap up the series instead of leaving it on a massive cliff.
I never understood the hate SGU got when it came out. I was a long time Stargate fan starting from the '94 movie, so SGU wasn't my introduction to Stargate, far from it. Yes, SGU was a very different show than SG1 or Atlantis were, but it just made it better in my opinion. It had interesting characters, compelling stories, great effects... I was so disappointed when it got cancelled on a cliffhanger, and for several years afterwards I kept hoping that it might get to continue, but it was not to be it seems. Still it was a good Stargate show that didn't get a chance to truly shine, and that's a shame.
SG-1 will always be my favourite. I liked SGU more then Atlantis (never finished Atlantis) Only liked half the cast of SGU so was hard to watch when it was around someone I didn’t like. They had some really good episodes and really wished it continued. Felt like it was just becoming its own thing when it ended.
I always heard SGU was terrible or too different and while it is quite different i am enjoying it so far and enjoy her character. I'd like to see SG1, Atlantis and Universe all come back in some form or another. A SG universe would be neat to explore. That episode where SG1 was returning all that with Vala showed a galaxy and characters i wanted to see more of.
It's a good different if you ask me. For the first time there was an SGU where the people were stranded with only the bags on their backs and some with little experience. Atlantis wasn't as far from earth with the tech they had and they brought food and equipment over with them. Destiny has so many problems from day one that they have to fix and finding planets with life/food and being stuck on an old broken ship with the same small group of people in space. It went where the other shows didn't and it makes sense it being a drama because of the characters circumstances. Almost like the humour from the other shows wouldn't fit the circumstances of the show.
I did not feel that in that time, that "animosity" within SG1/SGA and SGU, I love SGU from the very begging, those "websodes" made with scenes left in the cutting floor, I just got this animosity after the cancellation of SGU, and I still HATE SciFi for that !!!!
If I could ask Miss Huffman one question I would ask if the affair between her character T.J. and Colonel Young was part of the show from the start or did they write it in after she told them she was pregnant?
The affair was there from the first episode. About halfway through filming the first season Alaina told the producers she was pregnant, and they wrote it into her story at that point. Good question!
-central Wisconsin: I’m concerned about the actress and her heath, regarding a lump on her neck, on the front right side of her neck. Praying it’s treatable. 🙏🙏🙏
There's two things about SGU that contributed to its downfall, firstly I think SG1 episode 200 hurt it because the comparisons (unfairly) were always made with that one scene. Secondly, I think it was ahead of its time - if it was made 10 years later rather than off the back of Atlantis, I think it would have been huge. It's such a shame, even though I was a fan of SG1 and even more so Atlantis, even when it was new SGU was immediately my favourite Stargate series. A noisy minority kinda ruined Stargate for everybody, in conjunction with the network, and it's going to be very hard to get it back. There's a golden period where you can revive something, and for SGU it was probably 2015-2020 and maybe it would still be viable if they were shooting right now, but it's really just going to be too late, even if they want to do it, which it seems like they don't.
my favorite universe character !
SGU is the most soulful sci-fi show. Her work on SGU was really beautiful. I was so absorbed with the baby ark.
The late 2000s the world wasnt as fucked as IT IS now

Thank you for doing this interview, great throwbacks and stories! ;)
It still hurts
I'd love to see a continuation of sgu
Been left hanging too long!
Cool to see not only Amanda Tapping but Alaina Huffman as well get into directing!
And starring in Supernatural.
Shes in! One more step towards season 3. Seems like the timing is really coming together.
I LOVE ALL THE STARAGATE

First season of SGU was a bit of a slog, but season 2 found its footing and was a shame it wasn't continued with a season 3.
I prefer the first season over the second honestly.

From all three Stargate show's SGU was favourite. Hopefully it get proper ending with full season.

Watching season 2 right now, for like the umpteenth time. Tragedy that this did not continue. Execs suck.

All SG franchises are good in they own way, i liked that they weren't exactly the same.
