    One of the things that I love about the Imparfait is that of all the tenses in French, it is the easiest one to learn because it takes the same endings for all four verb conjugations, and there is only one irregular verb (être). It is also the easiest tense to master because it really only has one specific use: To show repeated, habitual, or ongoing actions in the past, or, in the case of être, to show description or to "set the scene," so to speak.

    hi, im a little confused ...ive watched a video few days ago about the expression using 'venir de + infinitive' ( it wasnt one of yours ) where ive been told that "We just got here = on vient d'arriver" ... are the both versions correct then?
    from what i understood is that when you wanna translate YOU JUST DID something you use present tense of venir, but if you wannna translate YOU HAVE JUST DONE something you would use imperfait...... would you say thats correct?

    • @Frenchspanishonline

      kasia 793511 hi, venir de is called recent past, and requires the present tense: je viens de terminer, it is an event in the recent past close to the present. Je venais de terminer is related to an event in the past close to another event in the past: je venais de terminer quand il est venu.

    At around 7:09 when you discussed using 'Si' you said we should use the imperfect. But how would that work with reflexive verbs. For example, if I wanted to say

      il faut que is not an IF sentence, after if there is no subjunctive mood in French

    • @legaleagle46
      @legaleagle46 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not in the SPOKEN language or in the INFORMAL written language, at least. As you know, the formal WRITTEN language DOES require either the Imperfect Subjunctive or the Pluperfect Subjunctive in if-clauses: "Si j'eusse une voiture; "Si j'eusse eu une voiture." But that's a bit of an advanced subject for most of your students here, so I can see why you avoid mentioning it. Personally, however, I think French lost something when it relegated the Passé Simple, the Passé Antérieur, the Imparfait du Subjonctif, and the Plus-que-Parfait du Subjonctif to the formal written language. All four tenses provide some subtle nuances in the formal written language that I think are completely lacking in the everyday spoken and written language, just as their counterparts still do in Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese (which even has a Future Subjunctive!).

    I tried the first translation without looking at the answer, and I came up with
    Quand j'etais jeune, j'ai visite (accent aigu on the 'e') ma grand-mere.
    So I tried to use passe-compose on the 2nd action.
    So i'm guessing the reason its wrong is because this translation implies that he visited his grandmother once?
    Also why does the correct answer use "allais rendre visite" ? Doesn't the action of visiting already imply 'going' somewhere?
    If anyone responds to this, please use in English since i've only been learning French for 1 week.

    the English sentences you use as an example usually are not authentic and most of them grammatically wrong. For example, it's not possible to use simple past with an adverb of time as you put in the sentence "I went to the restaurant every Sunday" you should say "I used to got the restaurant every Sunday"

      yes, it is, just that some prefer the verb "rendre visite", quand j'étais jeune, je rendais visite à ma grand-mère
