    Finally, the answer I’ve been looking for. Had so many people including teaching pro trying to tell me to hold my hinge/angle because I’m extending too early. Thank you sir, for this video. Now I can finally figure out how to go about changing my swing properly. Got tired of all those quick fixes that won’t hold up after a few weeks. Again, thank you sir and keep these videos coming

    Great stuff! I am amazed how our brains are so quick in determining that we are out of room and know that we have to extend up to hit the ball. We can swing like this for years and not realize that we are doing this.

    I do like this - the most amazing thing about golfers is that they consistently hit the ball regardless of the method they use, obviously some more efficiently and effectively than others. It is the compensations that enable this to occur and it is remarkable how quickly we adapt to ensure we hit the ball in some way, shape or form.

    I've come from a stack and tilt type swing and went to a Foley swing focusing a ton on staying centered in the backswing and moving hard to my left side. I believe by watching this video, I most likely have the sliding version of this EE compensation. I'll try and focus on being more rotational vs lateral (once the snow melts) and see where I go from there. Appreciate your thoughts and info!

    Great explanation of several "most likely" early releases. I just had a "K-Vest" test done on my swing. Right hip shooting up and under the right torso, steep attack angle but hit dead center each time. Finally found a guy out here in the web land that doesnt fancy a large headed driver either. My driving now after using the larger headed drivers is far worse then with the older 1990's style. I feel its made me more aggressive with the driver swing seeing that huge head and more lazy during practice sessions. By chance do you know who produces/makes a smaller headed driver say around a 380-400 CC. Glad to find you're website, first seen you on a vid with the younger guy that has the "Be better Golf" website. Looking forward to viewing your other vids, good luck out there and keep it up.

    Just watched the 2016 LB Open VLOG and am very impressed with your turnaround from day one to day two. It would have been so easy to blow off the second day so you showed good mental strength in that regard. Once you shake the rust off, you'll be good to go. I am going to really miss your videos when you make it to the tour. You have a way of cutting through the BS and just saying what the problem is. Better watch out. You may be giving up too many secrets. I know this comment isn't pertinent to this video, but I wanted you see it.

    Been trying to fix early extension for years with staying in my posture, didn't work. My problem is as you said, starting downswing so steep and early extending and raising handle coming in over plane to compensate. Been working on flattening out downswing to stay on plane using an alignment stick and my early extension is cured. Most importantly finding center of clubface and striping the ball. Cant believe how many hours i spent trying to keep my butt back on a chair, wall, etc with no success

    First: It's mind-boggling to see the improvements in your content (production wise) Monte, this looks awesome. I know it's similar to asking your favorite artist to remaster their first album but it would help LOADS of people if you could remake some of your classic "cargo shorts" videos as they're a bit tough to get through when compared with your production quality now.
    Second: It would be great to hear your take on rolling the wrists. I plateaued for quite a while because I simply couldn't understand that rolling my wrists and pulling my arms tight across my body was destroying my chances of delivering any kind of consistent strike. One of your videos that was invaluable to me in fixing the issue was the one in which you suggest thinking of just the arm motion of lifting the club and letting the body turn occur naturally, then "casting" to get to impact. Clickbait alert but it feels like *effortless power* ;).
    It's so refreshing to see someone who talks about the essence of the swing instead of hyper-focusing on all of the effects of a correct swing. No one is TRYING to keep their left arm straight or their left wrist flat or shallow the club to start the downswing, those are just things that happen when you're doing it right.

    I was getting to bent over at address. As soon as I stopped that, I increased my speed and contact. Also cured my heeled shots.
    I can blast my driver now up to 270 in 50 degree weather, which would normally be around 285 in summer. Irons are pure, and every shot has a nice fade to it.
    Of course, patience was key. It took a week to get used to the feeling, and another two to make it automatic. But now it's working fine, and shot 73 the other day.

    If I lived closer to Monte he would definitely be my instructor. Living in Minnesota I kinda lose my swing then pick it up halfway through our season. If i could play year-round...man lol. Great Vid Monte!!

    Brilliant....I've got something somewhat similar to EE - not quite, but the effect is the same...the right arm straightens out early and the right shoulder is high. I've pulled my hair out trying to find the root cause of it.

    Am I understanding the purpose correctly: to strike the ball? Monte did not mention any tips about hitting the ball straight/fade/draw, this was simply about making contact with the golf ball to have a chance to hit it straight.

    How about when the golfer is in perfect posture at address and takes a good backswing but then they have early extension during the downswing,,,,is that a swing fault?

      It's still likely an issue in transition and early extension would still be the compensation to hit the ball. Maybe the right shoulder dropping or overly steep club shaft that he demonstrated

    If only underlying causes were this simple and clear cut. I think the root cause of any compensatory move in a golf swing is extremely difficult to diagnose because it's likely to be related to not one but multiple issues. Thanks for sharing.

    The problem isn't the extension per se, it's the direction that your hips are moving when extending. When they go towards the ball your upper body has nowhere to go but out and hence the club has to swing out to in for any kind of contact with the ball. The hips have to be working up and away from the ball which creates the space for the right arm and shoulder to work straight down into "the slot" without getting stuck for the dreaded power block right. Obviously the margins are extremely slim hence why even the pros really struggle with this, Lee Trevino actually adapted that shot as his normal drive.

    Okay, I’m doing all of the above. Now what? I want to STOP early extension permanently forever never again. It’s the number one thing that separates BAD golfers to really low scoring great golfers.

      Exactly. Young can’t “Stay in your spine angle.” You have to fix the reason that’s forcing you to come out of it.

    A great exercise: Try hitting a ball with your eyes closed. With eyes shut your brain won't correct for the swing fault. You won't early extend but you'll swing into the ground. To me the two swing keys to avoiding early extension are squatting into your left glute as you let the club shallow. And then rotating like a tetherball around a pole. Forget keeping heel down or pressing your butt into a chair. Just swing/rotate from the inside after a purposeful squat feeling your left shoulder, glute and club head move towards the ground.

    Yes, if every aspect of your backswing is incorrect, you have to get upright in order to actually hit the ball, but why on earth would someone focus on early extension before addressing the cause?

    So if I have early extension, I have a swing fault, but it's not the early extending, it's another flaw and extending is my recovery method? Makes sense to me. Now I just need to figure out what I'm recovering from haha.

    It's semantics; we still must label "early extension" as a swing fault simply because it may occur even if none of your "causes" were evident. It may occur simply out of a bad habit and nothing more; no pre-existing fault.

    Hold on I'm confused - am I completely missing something here or are you contending that you fix faults with another fault? Like yeah, if you are way too hunched at address (a fault) you can fix it by standing up immediately on the downswing (another fault) and sure you will contact the ball but it will never be consistent. I just don't quite understand the approach here because there is no doubt that a player with good posture and good fundamentals will not benefit from standing up and extending early during the downswing (they are either going to hit block fades or duck hook it).

      He's saying the early extension is a necessary compensation from that position to be able to hit the ball because of that earlier fault. The early extension is a symptom of the fault not the fault itself. In this example, fixing the posture/setup issue will lead to a better downswing where early extension won't be necessary to get back to the ball.

    If you're compensating it is still a fault, but it just means you have more than one area to work on in your swing. Label it however you want, but compounding errors are still errors in the swing...

    Jack Nicklaus had an "early extension" as he slid/shifted on top of his front foot.

      You can always point out great golfers who do things their own way, but it doesn't mean it's the right way for the majority of players.

      Well thank you. I don't think I've said the majority of players should swing like that (and get back and hip issues as Jack did).
      Jack's swing is a highly successful example of one of the ways for compensation Monte describes.
      So that leaves the question open, is it a fault for Jack? Winning wise probably not. In combination with his shift and ensueing health problems - probably yes.

    How about correcting the initial fault so you don’t have to make 15 compensations? I think it was Hogan who wrote that the best swing is the swing with the fewest compensations. You can get into a good impact position as described in the video but not consistently and not without leaving a few yards on the tee box. I would suggest ignoring this instruction and focusing on a simple set of repeatable fundamentals that are rooted in a proper address position, takeaway, transition, impact position and finish relative to the shot you’re attempting to play.

    But you got it all wrong. If U bend over you will raise yourself for the club not hitting the ground. So U need to stand or raise yourself as U do when U take the club back. Then you can apply rotation and squat/turn and push up. Check out GG Swing Tips.

      No, I’m saying you have to fix the core problem, that’s causing the EE, not the EE itself. You don’t fix a cough, you take an antibiotic to get rid of the bacteria causing the cough.
