  • The Lancaster Classic of 2024 did not go well. Despite shooting a personal low score, I was able to come home with a PRIZE!!

Scoring a 567 out of 660 is tough dude. Not a good day. But no worries, you got this! You’ll bounce back at Vegas. Props to you, some guys only post videos when they have a crazy good score.

Thanks for sharing your experience as tough as it was! It takes real courage and humility to be so vulnerable! Look forward to hearing how you solve it as I’m sure it’ll help others! Hoping Vegas is going so much better!!

Get with Joel Turner. His course has helped me greatly. I shot a 450/450 36x at the Casper triple crown last weekend. Not an easy task with a BHFS set up with 23's but I did it.

I absolutely cannot shoot a thumb button under any kind of stress...... A hinge though? Much less drama

I’ve shot this tournament for about 6 years. My first time ever there I shot a 323. Tournament nerves at big indoor tournaments are like no other. The air has enough tension you could cut it with a knife. Biggest thing I’ve ever taken away from this tournament is that there’s only one element you have to control. That element being your mind, if you can do that. This tournament is a blast. Stay strong and focus on the positives. It will help immensely.

Man, that many people, that close to each other would be claustrophobic and nerve racking.

Hey Jeff, I have been a follower of your channel for some time. Love the content. I went to Lancaster for my first time this year, and shot much worse than I know I am capable of, as well. Oh well, nerves are a killer, at least for me. I looked up your Vegas scores and it seems that you got the train back on the tracks, good work. I struggled with severe target panic for several months last summer, and really had to work hard to overcome. Keep the great content coming and as a fellow south easterner, hopefully we will cross paths in person one day. Cheers

Thanks man, I know I'm not "cured" by any means but I was able to get control of myself and make some good shots.

There are two things I've learned that I shouldn't do while I'm trying to be accurate and consistent:
    1: Any kind of coaching
    2: trying to record video
If you expect to get a good score, your mind has to be just on your own performance. That might mean sacrificing some footage.

a lot of the video is on a tripod, but once the wheels fell off, I saw it as an opportunity to document it.

Amazing how easy it is to lose focus under even a little competitive pressure. Gotta focus on the process. And it still isn’t easy UNLESS you’re Bodie Turner. We all can shoot really really great on our home range and I’ve learned how to transfer that mindset to the events I do. It’s ALL in the mind. It’s a “ fickle” thing for sure. 👍👍

I’ve noticed when target panic is brought up there is always a product to be bought to help. No one ever just works on the mental part of it. Has there been any actually studies on it or is it just a buzz word to separate fools from money ? Or an excuse for a poor performance?

    • @ajbholsters2035
      @ajbholsters2035 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Target panic boils down to a psychological compulsion to rush the shot when the aiming device (pin, dot, whatever) touches the intended point of impact. There can be a lot of different factors that would make it difficult to just let the pin sit in the middle and not want to dump the release. Since our upper bodies are under tension at full draw, that feeling can translate into mental anxiety and a desire to rush through the shot in a semi-controlled manner to return to a relaxed state.
It could be equipment related in that the bow may not be set up in a way that produces comfortable, repeatable form (i.e too much draw weight, wrong draw length, not balanced properly, too much mass weight). If the archer is constantly fighting his equipment to stay at full draw or keep the pin on target, then it is going to make him want to get through the process more quickly and send the arrow on its way before he is fully ready.
It could also be a breakdown in form (collapsing bow shoulder, creeping into valley). This could be equipment related (see above) or a lack of practice and repetition.
A change in release can help, but it's mostly because it forces the archer to reevaluate his form, and possibly tweak some of the things I mentioned above that was giving him the trouble in the first place. A lot of people who switch to a hinge report a reduction in their tendency to punch because it's harder to dump a hinge, the movement is more foreign than pulling a trigger, and they get used to the pin sitting on target while they shift their mental focus to executing the shot.
Long story short, you gotta figure out the "why" first before you can start figuring out how to fix it, and then tailor the solution to the individual because there is no singular fix.

There is nothing embarasing about competing & losing, only in never putting in the effort to begin with. Maybe practice breathing excercises to dissipate anxiety & focus only on the arrow nocked on the string!.
