In my opinion this performance was the high watermark of artistic gymnastics. The perfect combination of artistry, athleticism, grace and skill. Apart from a slightly shaky vault it was a flawless performance and beautiful to watch also. Maybe it was of no consolation to Elena but at least she had a moment in the sun and what a majestic moment it was.

MoonlightBae I'm with Elena, I'm glad she never performed at the Olympics. She was not ready, and she would have severely injured herself on the world stage. Glad it was behind closed doors.
She is one who a person can become obsessed with. One feels admiration for he immense talent and for her goodwill toward fellow competitors, and great sympathy toward her for what happened to her.
@@Warewolfgirl1 , Please tell me why you said that? Did you know Lena personally? Tell me, did she want to perform at the -80 Olympics or was she forced to do this somersault?
prince extortion Yeah, like Say What has commented - she died of complications of being quadriplegic. Sadly, her quadriplegia was caused by snapping her neck in 1979, during training. Despite her status as one of the best gymnasts of all time, her coach put her under a stupid amount of pressure, to add the 'Thomas Salzo' move to her routine. It is a very dangerous move, which is now banned. At the time, few female gymnasts could achieve it - and Elena herself complained to her coach, how much danger she was in. Regardless, the Soviet sports authorities continued to pressure the hell out of her. And then sadly, the inevitable happened during training (whilst practising the move). She broke her neck, and became permanently paralysed.
My absolute favourite gymnast ever and I've only learnt about her recently this last few months or so and already she (Elena) has me in full of admiration ❤ . What an inspiration she was and is. Yes ok very sadly she's no longer with us in person 😢 but her legacy will live on. we must never ever forget beautiful Elena Mukhina † 💗💗
I'm sorry but she's not the best Dominique Dawes... Came after her had a graceful career and is still here with us healthy she never pushed the bounds and still is a flawless gymnast
@@biancabright1710 I hope you're not insinuating that the accident was her fault! It certainly was not. She fought to let her broken leg heal and not overwork it.
I miss truly artistic gymnastics. Elena was so strong, but still had beautiful lines, every move and every pose was deliberate. Truly one of the greats, and one of the greatest tragedies.
that replay of her floor choreography at the end is still some of the most beautiful gymnastics ever, in my opinion. that jump she does at the very end of her routine is simply gorgeous. One of the all time greats. It's so sad to think that this was only 2 years before her accident.
She is still speaking out. what a beautiful and talented performer I have no doubt she would have changed the history of gymnastics. Perfection artistry in dance and Grace points would have put her over the top. Of the world in points. We need more of Grace beauty. Facebook for Elana can't find website
Can’t watch this without being sad. She was ahead of her time. It would be years before some of the standards she set would be passed up. People were doing double tucks off beam for decades after this. That’s how hard it was. It was a perfectly acceptable dismount for generations. It still took years for full-ins on floor to become more common. Icon
The fluidity of her movements is astounding..... such a gorgeous gymnast who was used until they couldnt use her any longer. So heartbreaking. They didnt care about her, as she said, they only cared about the medals she could bring them.
I remember in an interview Elena mentioned one of her favorite gymnasts was Olga Korbut and I can see it the more I watch her. Not just because her bar routine but her overall grace and the way she carries herself on the floor. It’s beautiful. I noticed she even has the same floor music as Olga did during her Olympic routine. Watching them both perform gives me so much joy & goosebumps lol
One of the amazing gymnasts who fueled my teenage love of gymnastics. Olga, Elena and Nadia were my idols so I was devastated when I finally learned the shameful truth about what really happened to Elena. I hope gymnasts are better cared for now. Rest in peace

Elena Mukhina, such unique qualities! Effortless effort, she makes it look easy. In slow motion we see how organic is her flow of movement. I am moved so much by her brilliance, by her grace. Rest in peace dear beautiful Elena you are a world champion but deserved so much more from this life. I will remember you forever.

@Carla Apezzato-Chimenton Yes but compared to how they were scoring other routines and some of the ridiculous 10s, it still should easily be a 10. If you don't give that a 10 everyone elses scores should be dropping from what they were giving.
Rest in peace, beautiful Elena Mukhina. I love you so so much and you inspire me (and so many others) to keep going. We will never forget you and I hope that you are in a happy, peaceful place now - you deserve so much more than what you received in life. I love you, sweetie
Rest in peace beautiful Lena you were and still are one of the best gymnasts the world has ever seen and you're sorely missed. I hope now your free and able again and are somersaulting over the clouds and flipping down the rainbows with the gentile grace you showed in life. This was a tragedy that should never of happened at all and I do think had she not broken her leg and then been made to train whilst very much recovering still as well as doing a move that really only men can get the sheer height to be able to complete it she would of come first in most if not all the events she took part in. These girls truly were gymnasts of a different class to todays who have every advantage with the new rules and user friendly equipment! Today they have lost the art of movement they are muscular so don;t have the smooth flow of a ballerina that girls of this era had and that is quite sad really.
I completely agree with what you have written so eloquently about Elena. Especially about her exquisite flow of movement, so rare and precious. I don't see this quality in gymnasts of today and indeed in gymnasts of any era. She was unique. May she be resting in peace.
It's very sad I think something was wrong since her broken leg I mean it's normal in this sport to have injures but a broken leg in training and later the broken neck I think she was under so much pressure poor girl.
Audre Chan she was injured while practicing a dangerous element she was pressured to do called the Thomas salto and underrotated it. Maybe her leg had something to do with it but muchina herself stated she knew the move was dangerous and that injury was inevitable and felt that she would break her neck doing this move.
@Anne Stop telling myths. The competition was insane in the national team. Coaches were tough. But the athlete could leave at any time. Don't make up stories.
Leading she's not telling stories Do you think the Soviet s were just let a major world champion who was able to challenge Nadia get up and leave? They were still sour about Nadia's victory . Who could say no to trainers or secret police? The KGB could make very unpleasant for her if they wanted and she only had her grandmother. I am sure this poor girl would have quit if she could. Her face in photos seems to say u no longer want ti be in sport
Her accident and story are so tragic. She was so talented-one of the best gymnasts ever in terms of ability. How I wish she was able to continue her career and how I wish that she was able to enjoy the sport as much as others enjoyed watching her perform.
She said she didn't believe she had got a gold medal. She was nerveous if they changed the result... her floor and beam routins are so smooth and fluent!! Rest in peace😢
She should have received a "10" on those bars, for her Bar-routine was Perfect. Well, I give her a "10" anyway, lol. And she gets a "10" on her dance routine. And, she gets a "10" on the Balance-Beam. (wow, she was very comfortable on there too) The girl is badd. No doubt!
I always felt that she deserved a ten for the floor exercise in the all around. She won a silver in the balance beam final behind Nadia that should have been gold, her ballet training really shows. Her dismount from bars is my favorite and I have never seen anyone else do a somersault off the low bar.

She performed all those impressive and difficult moves like a total master, it was a piece of cake for here, she didn't need anything strange to impress, God, perhaps if her leg will have a proper time to heal, rest and then train again without any rush, I'm totally sure she could have performed the salto thomson, God how much I admire her, she deserved a much better life.

Yes ,rest in peace ,tremendous athlete
Elena was the perfect mix of artistry and power. Nobody now can touch her artistry. RIP, Elena. ❤️
So much grace!! REST IN PEACE BEAUTIFUL ELENA!
enydnightshade what it the cause of her death?
prince extortion Yeah, like Say What has commented - she died of complications of being quadriplegic.

She not only performs tricks on the beam but she dances on the beam!
A beautiful girl with a tragic story. Rest in peace champion❤️
She was an amazing, fantastic athlete!
She took the back flip and kicked it up a notch!
She was a perfect athlete: diligent, talented, charismatic and inspirational. RIP dear Elena.
Best gymnast ever, she literally gave her life to her sport
Sleep well princess, you will always soar
I'm sorry but she's not the best Dominique Dawes... Came after her had a graceful career and is still here with us healthy she never pushed the bounds and still is a flawless gymnast
@@biancabright1710 that was so unnecessary
Still true ‼️
@@biancabright1710 I hope you're not insinuating that the accident was her fault! It certainly was not. She fought to let her broken leg heal and not overwork it.
@@biancabright1710 there's some moments in life that you have to just be quiet and girl, you missed that
I miss truly artistic gymnastics. Elena was so strong, but still had beautiful lines, every move and every pose was deliberate. Truly one of the greats, and one of the greatest tragedies.
What a jewel, so tragic, she is an angel
that replay of her floor choreography at the end is still some of the most beautiful gymnastics ever, in my opinion. that jump she does at the very end of her routine is simply gorgeous. One of the all time greats. It's so sad to think that this was only 2 years before her accident.
bbhouk1 yes that split leap at end! I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed how gorgeous it is.
She is still speaking out. what a beautiful and talented performer I have no doubt she would have changed the history of gymnastics. Perfection artistry in dance and Grace points would have put her over the top. Of the world in points. We need more of Grace beauty. Facebook for Elana can't find website
Beautiful ballet style split leap.
Icon
her bar routine is just... INSANE! It's amazing! Her story is so sad, she was so talented and would have done amazing things if not for her accident.
Elena Mukhina was fantastic! Deserved a better fate.
Uma das melhores ginastas do mundo!!!!
❤ siempre un placer ver a Elena.
70’s gymnastics was superb and Elena was simply magnificent, such talent. She is missed
Fluid…Naturally talented!!! 🤸🏾♀️
The fluidity of her movements is astounding..... such a gorgeous gymnast who was used until they couldnt use her any longer. So heartbreaking. They didnt care about her, as she said, they only cared about the medals she could bring them.
Elena was absolutely amazing! What a talent!
Best routines I have ever seen! So much talent, A legendary athlete!
And the Korbut flip which she truly mastered!
@@luiz4430 She even added a twist to Korbut flip, insane!

They were so much more artistic and elegant in the 70s.
Right?! Nowadays is more like gymnastic skillistic
All the way to early 90s.
Nowadays it's more like a cheerleaders' competition.
@@Fernando-dt8je yes especially the floor routines.. way too much tumbling for my liking. it’s just not elegant anymore

@Carla Apezzato-Chimenton It was a tedious ultra-dificcult routine, I agree
@Carla Apezzato-Chimenton Yes but compared to how they were scoring other routines and some of the ridiculous 10s, it still should easily be a 10. If you don't give that a 10 everyone elses scores should be dropping from what they were giving.
Pretty good is an insult
Because she was URSS, simple.
I just love her and this era. In my opinion the most magical era of gymnastics was 72 up to early 2000s. More artistic and elegant

I can’t help but watch these over and over again, she’s so good
Did she really just do a Full twisting double back on a floor with no springs? WOW!!!
I think the full twisting double back was named for her. Don’t know if it still is the Mukhina though.
Bork PomPom yep i believe it was named after her but i dont know if people still call it the mukhina
Svetlana Korol, She was practicing the Thomas salto when she got injured
They didn’t start using springs in international competition until 1978. I was a gymnast that is insane.
Robert McMullan It is formally known as the Mukhina but no one calls it that in the sport.

She sure was! 😍😍😄😄
(wow, she was very comfortable on there too)
The girl is badd. No doubt!
me TOO
She was perfect her performances always looked so effortless.
Three is no "dance routine" In artistic gymnastics. But if you are referring to her floor exercise... Yes , she was absolutely stunning!!! Miss her so
and her bum gets a 10 too!

RIP Baby angel
