- Again watch this one in High Quality for best picture.
Sorry for the shaking but holding a video camera up is actually harder then you would think... my arms where killing me haha.
I loved her version of this song, she was so playing with the audience in it. I loved the reactions she got, but hated the screamers at the start, it was a bit annoying. Other than that it was amazing.
Sorry i couldn't do anything about the redness of it, but the lights were against me. Oh and sorry about the shaking, but I guess it's better than nothing. I mean the quality is good.
This was taken in London's Hyde Park on 14th September @ Andrew Lloyd Webber's Birthday Party.
Enjoy. Please comment if you liked.
As for all the hateful comments and the so and so is better than Idina, yes some of them are, but this is a different take on the song... Not everyone is going to sing this song the same, if they did, it would be a dull business. Everyone has their preferences and so be it.
However... people are compairing this performance (which is live and pretty damn good) to every other performer who has sung the song in a pre-recorded enviornment (it's totally different). Think about it.
Critics, may I remind you that Idina is a theatrical performer. She isn't classically trained like the performers you are naming, yet she still pulls off the song pretty well. She has an AMAZING range and without even having to go to headvoice. Also what I love about Idina is you can see in her eyes just how much she loves what she does and every time she takes the stage she gets into character. I have yet to see her perform defying gravity without having to go into those Elphaba hand movements and crazy eyes even if its only a concert. it's in her nature. She's never even played Evita before and she immediately gets into the character. She even does it when she's recording for a film. You see in the behind the scenes footage of Frozen that she makes hand movement, facial expressions and restricts her hands much like Elsa does in the film. That's what's so amazing about her. And she hits the notes in this song perfectly even though she isn't classically trained. she's absolutely inspirational.
and what mean by the classically trained thing is ik she WAS classically trained but she hasn't sang classical music in FOREVER her voice isn't used to the stuff anymore cuz she doesn't do it constantly. she's used to theatrical singing now so that's the setting her voice goes to now: belt voice.
Queen Idina Menzel in her natural habitat: the stage.
The thing that makes Idina so lovable and her fanvbase so large is even though her voice isn't perfect at all, she makes you feel it, she makes you feel what she's singing and I would take an imperfect singer who makes you feel over a "perfect" singer who has no emotion at all.
Thank you for saying that. It is far better to invoke emotions than to be perfect.
Shae Henry She to me will always be Alphaba . ( spelled wrong I know ) And she isn't always at perfection . I don't care . She is an amazing singer/performer . Long live the ice princess and the wicked witch of the west .
I think your point is made at about 4:18, it's just effortless for her
Patti still has the best performance of this. She sang it as if she was really making a speech to her people. It was strong but also vulnerable.
GOD! When she walked out I just thought...WOW! What elegance! She absolutely glowed, the acting side of this was totally spot on! She personifies elegance and she really cares you know? You can see the pride and thankfulness in her eyes.
And vocally she got better and better, after about 30 secs she was amazing!!!
I love this woman so much! And I won't forget this concert. Thank you Idina!
And thank you for recording this!
My love of Evita and one of my FAVORITE broadway stars... I'm speechless
She's the most gorgeous woman on earth! I don't care if some people think she needs a nose job, cuz if a woman is totally perfect, she wouldn't be beautiful. Idina is Beautiful
She nails everything she sings!
I just wanted to thank you for your comment. I've never liked people who do that, and I completely agree with you. I have gone to a community theater during the summer for performance workshops, and they have people age 7 to 18. They tell us if you do anything like that obnoxious screaming, they will remove you. Now whenever I'm anywhere with people like that, it's just irritating, and I feel badly for the performer, having to deal with the distraction. So, thanks. :)
Wow what a great video! The shaking was fine, it wasn't even really while Idina was singing.
Really cool to get a different perspective on the song - other than Patti LuPone. Idina can do anything she sets her mind to, though ;)
She is such an amazing performance! Thx for uploading this!!
Interpretação impecável....instrumental também excelente....melhor versão que já ouvi...!!!
she is amazing
it is very good
I love her version!
she looked amazing and her voice sounded great
I think part of this performance not hitting completely right is the way it was recorded. Idina is a better studio singer than a live singer. Even on Broadway she misses a note here and there. Overall, though, her performance here was amazing. Her voice just sounds so different singing it when compared to all the other singers who have sung it before her.
totally agree!
Her smiles just killed me! She's flawless
I happen to disagree. But we're all entitled to our opinions. I like Idina very much and over the last 13 years have seen her on Broadway 5 times. I liked her and I am very much a fan as well as a teacher of theater vocals. So we disagree.
((Loss of breath)) John Barrowman at the end!!! She's sooo lucky!!! She is also truley one of the most amazing singers ever!!!
4:13
Ur welcome
does she have shoes on.. lol. Love you idina!
Wasn't she actually in talks for that a few years ago??? I swear that was a possibility...
@bmh4d0k3n First off, for the most part the huge career stars have a LOT of training throughout their careers, trust. Anywho - Idina was classically trained from a young age. Her SLS style is a much more recent choice. One of the most common mistakes about Idina is that her training was not "legit" in fact theres a video on youtube of her in Uni - you wouldn't even recognise it if it wasn't that you could see her face...classical training all the way. It's called "Sleepy Man"
A ESTE HIMNO NADIE LO INTERPETA MEJOR QUE VALERIA LYNCH, IGUAL ME GUSTO
You have to love her sincerity and her commitment. But vocally speaking she's hardly mediocre at times.
Lea Salonga did a classy rendition of this song.
slap a blonde wig on her, and she is PERFECT to play EVITA!!!!!
No way. Elena gets what's like to be Argentinean... She actually gets Evita. I love Idina, but when I went to see the show in ny last year I was fascinated on how Elena made me really believe she was Eva. If you were argentinean maybe you would get it.
The fans sound like they're dying xD
@bmh4d0k3n You're spot on. I mean, you can be classically trained and excel in belting because of it. But yes, to belt while using your chest voice? Plan on saying goodbye to your ability to sing [even decently] much sooner.
@ieatglue44 are u serious?? oh god! i never believed i woudl ever hear something like this! this woman is a LEGEND!!! have you watched RENT or Wicked??
She looks hot omg
@BearcatWizard
Still wondeful, but obviously she's not an Eva Peron. But I love you still, my Queen!
@ShellTard Christ, have you even heard this song performed by anyone else?
She's really nasally.
Honestly there is a difference between her singing in a cartoon movie and singing live. She had to sound younger because Elsa is 21. If you listen to the If/Then soundtrack she sounds amazing. There is a lot of emotion, and she totally deserved that nomination at the Tony's.
THAT SMILE. THAT SMILE IS BRIGHTER THAN ANY LIGHTS ON BROADWAY!
love how she's acting during this -it's like she decided to become Evita for this moment - amazing - absolutely adore her
The camera was on the head of a seal.
I agree.
She's perfection in every way! i love her.
it's people like idina menzel that make me truly believe in God. only a loving God would bless this bleak, dismal world with such an angel. brava, diva!
This is not her best performance but she truly rocks it anyway! She made me like this song which I didn't like at all before (even the LuPone version). Love you Dee
She's sooo beautiful !!
♥ I want her voice =] lol
I adore Idina Menzel and her voice is amazing but I think half the appeal is her personality rather than her talent...she's just so lovable!! :)
Oh memories :D I was there that night, and this was by far one of the best performances of the night :D
she has the cutest smile
After watching this video, I think it would be a very smart move to open the London production with Idina as Eva for a limited run. Tickets would sell fast to see her tackle the mamouth role, provided it was limited to the past six day a week performance ,schedule. I have seen and heard al least a thousand performances of this song. And you know it right away if she gets it, or simply singing the signature tune. And I am telling you, ... she gets it!
"...I love you and hope you love me" Yes Idina we loove you!! :) She's marvellous!!!
This video is amazing! it has te best quality I could find and great sound!! I'm actually from Argentina so everytime I watch this video tears burst up from my eyes, it's so beautifull! Idina is the best!
Thank you for posting this oirishgurl!!! thank you so much!
Shes no LuPone but actually she reminds me a bit of paige in idk how softly she sings it actually i really like this
beautifully acted....guys she is an actress as well as a singer - this is a BIG song
from one of the most famous shows of all times . come on every singer/
actress would love a crack at this one ..nevertheless she is fab but julie covingtons
version was fragile and beautiful - the best eva peron we never had!
@ieatglue44 really? :// she is a legend in broadway, everyone says so. and she won a Tony award something that's not easy to achieve. these are facts! if you don't see her talent..oh welll noth i can do about it;p
All the hatred need to shut up, she has an amazing voice, and everyone saying bad things about her need to stop and think, because their voice is probably not very good!
sheesh, to all the Idina haters, why don't YOU try making it into an ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER CONCERT!!!! she has to be great if she was in this concert. IDINA ROX!!!!
I disagree...She KILLED at this performance. And there were many in tears. Even if you don't like it vocally, perforemance wise it was right on the button
Idina has more talent in her left foot than most of you do in your entire bodies, stop ragging on her.
I am sorry, but she does an EXCELLENT job singing this! I really like it! Has emotion behind it!
I love how in the few moments before she starts to sing you can see her get into character.
Um, could everyone please stop hating on Idina? So what if you don't like it, she's still legend.
She was better then lupone and she understood the show.
@COBBCITY She has a powerful voice. It's the range that makes it not her best not the power
Not good! Which is a shame because she's fantastic, just not for this song.
Seriously... If you don't have anything nice to say... don't say it at all...
It felt like she was holding back for the first half of the song. And also, such annoying audience. It looked like she wanted for them to shut up when the song started.
I think its time for a revial of evita staring miss Idina as eva!!!
This song is totally perfect for Idina. Yes Patti will always be the Eva, but Idina did a fantastic job as well.
Agreed
@holyfrickidc Idk what your problem is against Idina, but she can EASILY go up against Patti Lupone AND Julie Covington!! I do agree that Broadway as a WHOLE was very different back then, and there were plenty of incredibly talented singers then, too, but that is no reason to not appreciate the talent presently displayed there, such as Idina Menzel herself, Kristin Chenoweth, Eden Espinosa, Laura Belle Bundy, Laura Michelle Kelly, and countless others. TH-cam some of their performance to see.
Erika Lea Patti could out belt Idina today at 68 without issue. Idina can’t even sing a song written for her live without a voice crack...
Broadway isn't what it used to be. We can't compare these modern singers to the singers of the earlier decades. They're too different in regards to technique and sound. Everyone today appreciates the lack of artistry and technical approach these singers display. And it's sad. You can't compare this performance to Patti Lupone's or Julie Covington, and it's a crime to do so. A Tony doesn't constitute legacy.
I just don't understand why everyone wants to fix something that was never broken.
Hanna Pabonan bring back the way broadway uses to be
She looks kinda nervous.
3:37 the girl recording this giggling when Idina said “I love you” is the purest thing
Idina is a goddess. I am just so in awe of her talent.
i love how she is actually playing the part. she is not just singing the song but really playing the role...i think some people dont really take that into account.. if it was a studio recording then it would be different.
Queen
un saludo desde Argentina!
Im from Argentina, and no one in the world sings this song better than her. Idina is Totally Amazing
Maria Victoria Garcia Rivas this is also not true lol
IN ENGLISH NO ONE BUT IN SPANISH Paloma San Basilio is by far the best version
You know, if idina worked on her mixed just a little bit more, she would be fabulous in Evita! This one performance explored many emotions in a way that other performers cannot do. She also sang it wonderfully ❤️ go Idina!
Okay, who wants a revival of Evita starring Idina Menzel?! Yes Please!
She is far too old.
She's too busy creating original roles that are becoming classics themselves. Go, Idina!
No one wants this.
Girl her voice would be gone before intermission
LEAVE THE SONG TO PATTI ONLY!!!!!!
and THAT is a star..
shes fucking amazing! i love her so much!
This seems a poor choice of key for her but she made it through. (I like her a lot but not every song suits her. She owns the ones that do suit her, though.)
Idina is one of my heroes, and her voice is amazing, but it seems as though they didn't adjust the key for her, she's a Mezzo-Soprano but it sounds like the key is too high
Singing higher than she usually does coupled with a less than dissatisfying video quality and an unfamiliar venue and style of song. All this and yet....................she’s still leaps and bounds better than that hag LuPone!!!
Too bad Elena couldn't handle the role. Her singing was atrocious at times, which is why when the cast performed at the Tony awards last year, they chose "And the Money Kept Rollin In and Out" because it's mainly sung by Che and Eva utters not one word. A lot of people were turned off by how horrible she was. Couldn't hit the notes and sounded so raspy. Terrible experience I had.
Okay. So far this evening I have watched approx eight different women sing this same song. This is one of the best performances so far. Still looking for the blonde with the long white gloves and sort of biggish nose who made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck when she sang "Don't keep your distance." Can't seem to find her. It's not Lupone. Menzel at least sounds like she's actually "talking" to her people. Heartfelt and well done.
@iloveidinamenzel1 I love were your coming from here and I'm not hattin I love love love her and I find it awesome that your sticking up for her I do now don't take this wrong way but her eyes are green please don't hate me... I just wanted to say and its not fair some of the coments that are left here it's just awful but that's the price that some one like idina must pay there will always be a hater no mater who u are so let them talk cus she'll always have her real fans
@MvyMkr They get training, but not all teachers know how to make voices last a long time. The classical training isn't hugely evident in the video. It's not a classical style (she belts), and the technique isn't great (she uses a lot of chest voice, the vibrato is slow). Just because she had classical training doesn't mean that the voice is good to go forevermore, especially if it was in her teenage years. She's taken lessons with Tanya Travers from University on, but I can't find much on her.
Looking back on this, wow I dunno.
Admittedly this was not her best performance...started off a bit shaky and thin. But I was there and I remember being swept up in the emotion of it all...you can see it on her eyes. Seeing it again now 2 years later and after more vocal training, I really wonder if the emotion of the song really got a bit too much for her, because it becomes much more difficult to sing if you are overly emotional, and she seemed really like, "there" you know?
Just a thought...
wow, can't form an argument so you insult me.... very mature. Yes I do have Sarah Brightman T-shirt from a very current film project she was in. I do have a very good idea of what I'm talking about and again also a matter of taste. I happen to preffer Elaine Paige or Madonna on this song, not that I'm say Idina is a no talent hack or something, she's a great actress just her voice is better suited to shows like Wicked and Rent, not Evita. Also popularity has nothing to do with what I'm saying.
BULL SHIT! She was a technically trained singer during childhood...(I've seen videos that prove this) until she became a wedding singer. Then she had to learn all styles. When RENT came out everone assumed they were all gritty nd untrained but that was untrue.
Now she work on a style with her vocal coach that uses breath and technique to create a much more natural and expressive sound :-)
Well, in spite of all the previous criticisms from others, I for one am VERY GLAD you posted this. Yes, there are SEVERAL singers who do this song wonderfully, but this lady is NOT to be excluded from this category; what makes one smile? a good song, an enthused singer, a good audience, and it takes SOMEBODY to "capture" it; you did... the shaking is forgiven; this is 467 times BETTER than nothing at all. Thanks for posting; I'll listen to more of your music.
hahaha. me? did you not get what i said? i was going against the idina fan. i'm not a hardcore idina fan. what are you even talking about?
I love Idina so much, but this song is wrong for her voice. Classical-influenced musical theatre isn't for her. I LOVE her in rock/pop influenced shows, like in "Rent" and "Wicked", could totally see her in "Jesus Christ Superstar" too. I will say that she is NOT anywhere near the worst performer for this song. My favorite is still Elaine Page's version.
@Pulapalu It is not evident with all Broadway performers. Belting is not something every singer does, but it's indeed an impressive and popular technique. Anyway, I feel like you only read the latter part of my comment, because I indeed mentioned she is belting - but the main point was that she improperly does so.
Well I find this song fairly easy, and I have a good belt like Idina...whereas the score for Wicked is gruelling to say the least, and increddibly difficult even if you have a naturally high belt!
But thanks for explaining "legit," Never really loved Merman though, how she didn't kill her chords straight away I'll never know :-P
Wtf? Webber doesn't write "Legit" Broadway...and it'd be West End anyway! Wicked is FAR harder to sing than this song! And also I'd like to point you towards her credentials...Chess - very classical, even has counterpoint! And "See What I Wanna See" that is INCREDDIBLY legit! Wild Party too...most of her roles have actually been legit...
@Eyesiq i don't think that's really true. hear her performance with Josh Groban "Awake" or her singing no day but today on the PBS concert..or many many others! she is one of the greatest live performers! but she was a bit too nervous for this..that's all that went wrong i think.
@iloveidinamenzel1 Nice Jamie!! I just don't understand why people look up videos of her just to say all these horrible things about her?!?!?!?!?! I've met her twice and she is such a sweetheart. I just hope she never sees some of these comments....
I don't know why people judge this as 'bad" because it's different. Idina sings this music adapted to her (wonderful) voice. If the range doesn't fit, too bad, but she made the music hers while singing it. Any performance should be judged by that.
