    Other people have asked too, so I just want to agree with them and ask you if you could explain how to choose an intermediate flute. That does seem like the hardest flute for a student to pick out. Also, could you explain the differences between step-up, intermediate, and pre-professional flutes? Those terms have me confused. BTW I absolutely love your videos - don't change a thing!

    So we bought a Di Zhao because of your vid and appreciated the knowledge here. Flute Centers of New York were very helpful and added all your goodies and even more that I can't mention. This was worth it and just so you know they knew immediately who I was talking about when I mentioned you. I also know exactly where to go when I need repairs. That's worth knowing. Thanks again.

    Purchased the Gemeinhardt 2BLK new for less that half the list price for my 6th grader in her third year of concert band. It's a nice upgrade from her eBay Glory 180, and she's very happy with it and loves the 'cool' black color, which I think encourages her to practice. I think the Di Zhao 200 or 300 will be a nice step up if she continues playing into High School. Thanks for your review.

    I love your videos. I just started playing after not playing for 35 years. I tried a bunch of flutes (Yamaha, Pearl, Jupiter, Gemeinhardt, Di Zhao) and chose a Di Zhao 400 series flute last month. I love it!

    When I was in middle school, out of all the flutes we had mine was the only black nickel flute and I felt so cool when we had concerts because I stood out. We were assigned instruments the first day we joined the band and we'd have to play that assigned instrument through the three years of middle school. I knew there was only one black nickel Gemeinhardt flute and our band teacher actually saved it for me because he said I was the only student serious about playing for the band. At the time I didn't know how expensive instruments were and when I found out.. I was so honored to be able to have the opportunity to borrow such an expensive instrument from a public school. I stopped playing my freshman year of high school and I still regret not hanging onto it. Your enthusiasm makes me excited and want to start again.

    Just wanted to add..we recently went to the flute center to purchase an open holed step up flute for my daughter. The staff at the flute center was very helpful without pushing her to buy a particular flute. She tried five and ended up picking a Di Zhao 600 and is very happy with it. I ordered the black nickel for my step-daughter. It's her 2nd year playing. Thw pictures do not do it justice. It is a goregous beginner flute! It's loud, perfect for marching band, and it's very easy for her to play. Of course I used the JAF code when ordering and the final total was $479.

    Thanks Joanna! I just got the Gemeinhardt 3OBLK using your code. I am allergic to nickel and also can't play silver plated headjoints, but this model has a sterling lip plate and riser, and silver plated keys. I think it looks even better with the silver and black contrast! I used to play a 3SHB, but it's been in the closet for 20 years. It's really hard to find something that doesn't cost a fortune if you need the solid silver lip plate, so I was pleased to see Gemeinhardt putting a great compromise model in their line at a reasonable price point. Have you tried that model? It has open holes and a different headjoint design from the 2BLK that you played in the video (it has the NG-1 instead of the J-1).

    • @GER_1

    I agree with you as far as being shocked at the quality of Gemeinahardt! I've been playing on a 3SHB for about 4 years now (thankfully I'm upgrading for college very soon) but it's definitely gotten me far! Even my private teacher was astonished when she found out I played on a Gemeinhardt. She was like, "....woah. What? Gemeinhardt? You make that thing sound really good!" I will say, it has it's quirks and it's certainly not the best for where I am now, but they're definitely up & coming, especially for the price!

    I just got a geminhardt black nickel flute but it isn’t the student model but the intermediate one. I absolutely love it! The only downside is that it needs to be cleaned constantly because the fingerprints show easily. But I absolutely love the sound compared to the Yamaha one I was playing from school. It is so powerful but beautiful at the same time. The lip plate also helps a bit on my geminhardt flute. Plus a black nickel flute looks so freaking cool! At least I think so. But anyways the blk series in my opinion is great so far. Then again who knows I have only had it for three days. But it definitely makes a good impression!

    I would love to see some comparisons on flutes from manufacturers that have high end intermediate and low end handmade. I am currently trying out a bunch of flutes in a $3 - 4k price range and around here there are a few companies such has Altus and Haynes that make production flutes overseasand are finished in the States with handmade headjoints. I havent been able to try all the possible combinations, and im sure im not the only one who has been in this price point dilemna. for example i was considering either a low end Altus 807 vs an Azumi AZ3. it turned out that there are some significant, to me, design differences along with the fact that they are made differently by the same parent company.
    It wouldnt have to neccessarily be the same company to compare also but generally the idea, of given a certain budget, should one opt for an all silver concert/intermediate/overseas flute, or a handmade flute from US or Japan with possibly less features and less silver.
    for example, My current finalists in my quest for a new flute are a Powell Sonare 705, Split E with Signature 1 Aurumite plated headjoint, and a Miyazawa 102 with Split E. somewhat comparable cost for vastly different silver content.

    Dang my parents payed $800 for my Yamaha student flute when we could have just gotten a cheaper Yamaha or a Gemindheardt because honestly with a student flute you aren’t focused on how good your tone is but actually making a sound in the first place. But I’m glad my first flute was a Yamaha because I personally think that Yamahas are very nice and I started on a Yamaha and my current (pre-professional) flute is also a Yamaha and I can make such a better sound on it. I personally think it is better to stay with the same brand of flute as you started with. However I probably will go for something nicer in a professional flute when I start music school.

    I went into the Flute Center of New York early in the summer to upgrade to an intermediate flute, so not the this beginning level DiZhao. For my price around $1200.00, they brought in a Trevor Jones, Pearl, Azumi and Dizhao. Without reading any reviews to influence me or watching any video's, I walked out with a DiZhao 400. While the Azumi had a slightly more 'refined' or 'sweeter' tone, I found the DiZhao superior to all the other flutes (subjective) both in the lower register especially the low B and really sung in the higher register. I think this guy DiZhao is on to something producing really high quality flutes at very very reasonable prices. While the 400 has open holes, b foot joint, silver head joint, if this beginner DiZhao is close, than it's a BARGAIN!!

    I have an extremely cheap student flute (like a little over $100), but with zero prior experience with wind instruments, I thought it was amazing! But I do have to agree that the high register is much less responsive than that Gemeinhardt...alright, and maybe because I'm teaching myself how to play as well.

    Those sound awesome! You should do a comparison between student, intermediate, and professional flutes, that would be good information for anybody looking to buy or upgrade a flute :)
    I remember that my parents paid about $750 for my first flute in 1978, it was an Armstrong and I played it all the way through high school and some college band. I ended up pawning it (an act that I now regret) when I needed cash, somehow acquired an Artley student model flute (have no idea how I got it, I found it in my stuff when I left my ex husband). 4 years ago I bought a Pearl 665 and that's my main flute now (I just play in a local concert band so I don't need anything fancy).
    Does FCNY also sell piccolos? I have two, a Bundy (piece of junk), and a Jupiter, both student models but I may want to upgrade in a few years, pending how much I get to play it in band.

      Artley flutes are terrible and I started playing the flute in 2004 with a Selmer Bundy which I played for 4 and a half years and then I ended up renting an Emerson because my Bundy was falling apart. Then, the summer before my senior year which was the summer of 2010 I got my Gemeinhardt as a early 18th birthday gift from my dad. I played on my Gemeinhardt from 2010 until five months ago when I got my Altus. :)

    • @NoodleyBits
      @NoodleyBits 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kiara Eijo My Artley is pushing 20 years and has been great. Granted it's a student model so it doesn't have the symphony like sound, but it works for what I need. Right now it is in need of a tune up though but I haven't taken it in since I have my Pearl. Artley's upper register doesn't do so well over high F.
      My Bundy piccolo lasted barely two years before stuff started falling off of it. I was adjusting it at a rehearsal once and the part where the head joint meets the body came off, the left hand second finger key doesn't go down all the way, getting anything over C (two lines above the staff) is near impossible....If it was wood I'd use it to start my BBQ grill lol

      +FarfalleAlfredo As far as piccolos go, because I am also looking to get a new piccolo I've heard that Burkart, Powell, and Hammig are great piccolos. My Current teacher is a piccolo specialist and she plays on a Keefe Piccolo.

    I personally like the sound of the Di Zhao flute because it's a very resonant and bright sound but I'm also surprised with the sound of the Gemeinhardt because the sound is powerful. I heard from someone I know who's a Gemeinhardt that they overhauled the entire Gemeinhardt line in 2012. It actually plays better than my old flute which is a Gemeinhardt 3OSB. :)

    • @iredfive
      @iredfive 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard that too. The old stigma of Gemeinhardt will be hard to shake, but ive heard that all Gemmies from 2012 on are miles better than in previous years and that the quality is on par with just about any reputable maker out there. I have been contemplating trying out their handmade stuff, but the one i want to try is special order only. :(

    Haha, great video! Now I need a review of a mid-range Muramatsu vs. a mid-range Miyazawa (priced in the vicinity of $5,000 or so). I already borrowed and tried some from FCNY, but I want to hear your take on it. And by the way, Julian Rose is great to work with over there. :-)

    Please review some semi-professional or professional models! I'm in the process of trying out flutes to figure out what I need in a flute and I would love to hear your input on different flutes. Can you also address what you like in gold flutes over silver flutes and maybe talk about silver flutes that have gold plating or platinum plating?

    I'll be starting marching band in just a few days and I was wondering if a silver flute(like the Da Zhao 200) would be able to survive through it without too much damage especially considering how I'm so clumsy

      Angie Santos what flute did you end up choosing? I’m starting marching band too in a couple months and i have no idea which one to get :/ there’s so many to choose from !!! The highest i can get it for is about 1,000 dollars so idk if maybe one of these two would be good? I’m just really confused

    I just bought this based off your review. I have been playing a spencer flute for $100, which is cheap beginner level and I hate to say it, but I'm getting just about the same sound quality out of the di zhao 200 as i did with the spencer flute. I'm debating whether it's actually worth the $645 just to get a dizhao. My spencer flute also reaches the highest notes with the same ease. I kinda feel like I paid just to have a fancy case and that's about it.

    Your double tonguing sounds so clear. I'm jelly... mine sounds oddly clunky. I have been told that I carry a lot of tension in my jaw and mouth region so maybe that's why my tonguing sounds so clunky and clumsy.

    You think it's the silver riser, not just silver plated on this model, that adds that much to the sound?
    Seems like such a small detail. But then again you have all silver flutes thst have gold risers, so there must be something to it.

    I feel like the 2BLK is just a black m2 because I don't hear a difference between my m2 and the 2BLK. the Eb key might have a different shape, but no big difference just that the 2BLK is black.

    Normally, I just play Alto in jazz, (I've tried tenor, but me personally I'm not a fan of walking home with that case for 2 miles after school😂), but the 2BLK would be killer in a Jazz band😂👌

    Omg I had the black nickel Gemignhardt as a kid in the 80s. I beat the HECK out of it until I got a step up Armstrong and later a professional Yamaha. I called that Gemignhardt the "beer can with keys" lol it took a ton of abuse from 5th to tenth grade
