I went to Duke through Journey 3 but covid came and they moved everything online so I stopped. I enrolled in Chula and tested in to level 2 because I dont know how to read or write even though I've lived here for five years and can speak pretty well. Anyway, I just got my books for level 2 and they're in two parts. A book like we had at duke that relies primarily on romanticized vocab and then a reading and writing textbook and workbook. I know you skipped to level 5 because you could read so you probably didn't come into contact with Chula's romanticization of Thai words but the method used at Duke is far superior imo. I've got about a dozen Thai books and Duke has one of the best methods of anywhere I've seen. Anyway, I don't think you've covered this aspect but for casual learners who don't want to learn Thai script, it's something to keep in mind. Thanks for the videos. They're niche but i fit perfectly into it.
Thanks for the info and good luck at Chula. Yeah, different schools have different ways of romanticization. Thankfully, you'll start using it less as you learn the Thai reading/writing system. Enjoy the food at the downstairs canteen when you get a chance.
Hi routergods, I got inspired by you and followed your step of Thai learning. I will start Journey 3 at Duke online on June 4. I re-listened to your three videos on Journey 3 experience and find them valuable. I probably will stick with Duke for now. I have no desire to seek employment in Thailand and Chula will be an overkill for me.
Do you ever look at old homework and cover up the "corrections" and see if 45 days later you really benefited? A lot of second language acquisition research suggests little gain from corrections in many circumstances (like everything though, it depends). I generally believe if you had 10 hours to study, you'd never want to spend half of that getting corrected and studying corrections. You'd always want to spend 9.5 hours listening to Thai audiobooks or reading Thai books and 0.5 hours getting and studying corrections. The results are simply better, much better when 1000 hours pass.
No it doesn't... some people do the homework and presentations just with paper, but you do need at least a computer to access the Google Classroom. You don't need a Thai keyboard.
I’m planning to spend 6 months (Oct-Apr) in Bangkok to start from Chula level 1, but not sure if I should do 2 or 3 levels. Would you say it’s worth taking a break between the levels at chula to let the different levels properly marinate?
I can't really speak specifically about Level 1 because I went in as Level 5. Chula teaching reading/writing Thai at Level 2. My best guess would be take 1-2 and taking a break before 3 would probably be ok. Taking breaks in general is ok, but I'd suggest not completely stepping away from learning thai during the break as your skills degrade quickly. Go to Duke or another school to "relax" between your sessions at Chula.
@@routergods Thank you so much for your reply! I won’t be able to stay in Thailand for more than 6 months per year due to work, so I will need to figure out how to maintain my Thai while back out west. Sounds like your gut feeling is that it’s better to take the break between 2 and 3 rather than 1 and 2? I will have to take a 6month break anyway while away, so maybe I’ll just do the 1-3 in one go and get the certificate, and then continue on with 4-6 the next winter.

Mr.router gods, can I use the old coyote dancer video clips from your channel with dance music?
So Chula 5 requires a computer with Thai keyboard to prepare the homework and presentations?
No it doesn't... some people do the homework and presentations just with paper, but you do need at least a computer to access the Google Classroom. You don't need a Thai keyboard.
Where the download PDF of the Chula 5 book?
You sign up for the class and then download the PDF from the Google Classroom page after the first day of class.
@@routergods i want to prepare for chula 5 vocab before starting in sept. where to get the book and vocab?
Do the teachers at Chula wear masks when they are teaching?
It depends. Usually not, but when there is high pollution (PM2.5) or cold/flu/covid running around, then many will wear a mask.
