Hey Crypto! The difference between non-admin VS admin rights is that non-admin rights prevents modifications from outside of your scope and limits how far it can run. With admin rights, it can elevate itself higher than the user and do systemwide changes.

These malwares seem to be written in C/C++ using Microsoft Visual Studio and incorporating the Windows GDI (graphics device interface) for all of the graphic payloads. These malwares are generally not very sophisticated and anyone can make one with a bit of patience and determination.

MBR stands for “Master Boot Record”, it’s the boot sector category that provides information about the hard disk partitions. It also provides information about the OS so it can be loaded for the system boot. The MBR contains programs that determine which partition on the hard disk is used for the system boot. Simply put, no MBR, your computer doesn’t know what to boot off of, no computer.
Also mbr is out of date compared to gpt (GUID Partition[ing] Table)

@Doakem. Partially, but not fully correct. The thing that boots the computer is the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) on older devices and the UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) for newer devices. The MBR/GPT is the format that it boots up using. The Boot Manager is then run, which is one manager for each main os. The boot manager is going to be Linux on any linux or linux/windows dual boot, and i dont remember the full hierarchy. Then, the bootmgr runs the boot loader of the os that was selected. Then that runs its respective os kernel, and it is now in the os

The Master Boot Record (MBR) is a small section of a storage device's first sector (sector 0) and contains thr boot loader code and the partition table for the disk. When a computer starts up, the BIOS or UEFI firmware reads the MBR feom the boot device and executes the boot loader code, which then loads the operating system kernel into memory. The MBR is essential for the initializing the boot process and identifying the partitions on the disk.
The virus that wouldn't let you use your task bar was nuts. The internet seems safe after seeing that one.

back then when I got my first computer 2 years after having it, I couldn't use it any more because I downloaded to many apps, and it had at least 6 viruses running in the background for 1 year, a year later after that it would static out and you can't even see the computer..
I remember downloading Splinter cell Chaos Theory on my laptop from a sketchy website and then before executing the .exe file, I scanned it and it had Trojan Horse in it. Really thankful I scanned it because it would destroyed my father's laptop and I wouldn't be here commenting 😂

Thank you for adding subtitles, I have dyspraxia and it effects my ability to process what people are saying, so I usually use subtitles on videos but youtubes auto generated ones aren't very good. It's extremely helpful for me and a lot of other people for different reasons when creators do this. :)

The music used for a lot of these (not just in this video) is sometimes pretty groovy. I used to collect viruses back in the 90s and most of them were actually pretty dull in terms of payloads and effects. Seems some creators go all-out these days which is quite fun.

The opposite actually, these viruses are hobby projects, not actually cybercriminal malicious programs, most malware today is like you described 2003, but fun and weird viruses were way more prevelent back then
@O Gui Blindao I should have clarified that I was referring to viruses that a user is more likely to have experienced. Back then, you didn't have things like bug bounties (I can't remember the cybersecurity term for the equivalent) and regular OS updates to combat viruses.
Basically, if you owned a computer back then, you probably experienced the devastation of a nasty virus, but for users nowadays, that's likely not the case. Even then, most viruses don't cause severe performance issues and aren't immediately obvious as to not cause noise. Even then, hackers usually target networks of big companies or websites because the information they hold is more valuable monetarily and otherwise.
But yes, you are correct. Malicious not-fun viruses are just as prevalent, if not more than they were in the early 2000s. It's just that users are less likely to be affected by them.

formatting the hard drive and then reinstalling Windows from scratch is the "classic" fix for these types of problems if your boot sector doesnt seem to work.
