Using it half bent over will catch up to you someday M8, I've been working as a pipewelder and pipefitter since 1983, I've learned the hard way that if you can get your work up so your standing straight your back will thank you every morning when you roll out. When I was your age I'd foolishly toss argon bottles on my shoulder because I was impatient also lengths of pipe etc, I've had both knees and hip replaced but the back isn't so easy, I build up the bases of all my tools, pipe lathe, threaders, chain vises, you name it, if I can, I will. Great videos, young man
He could produce his own show for Discovery orso but they would want him in a strangle hold contract. So then they might want to consider power raising the amount they are used to paying for a top-show. And even then... I don't think it would be the same, nor feel the same.
I agree, Alec can have a career in sales. With a talk like that, you can sell sand in the Sahara. In the meantime, I'm sold on the green giant. Please state your price, Alec ;)
the ferrington 200's hammer squeezes more because it is directly copying the motion of the piston, which is attached to the fly wheel. the piston essentially moves in waves, rounding off for a second at the top and bottom. the other hammer has a binary push up, push down, so it travels at a relatively constant speed, and returns as soon as the down stroke has finished. basically, it doesn't round of at the end of each stroke.
"The green machine" one of those "don't make em like they used to" kind of machines. I restored a 1957 delta drill press and its the best drill press I've ever used, something to be said for vintage machinery. 👍🏻⚔🔨
amazing machine every video I can't get over the constant chug of her and how she has her own heartbeat leading you into you work and the rythum that she s in. amazing..
Came here from the Samurai, was supposed to watch you make the chisel and then go to bed.... That was an hour ago. You're now my second favourite TH-cam channel (second to AvE), I think you are fantastic, however I don't think my wife will appreciate these videos.
I only wish I had the Green Giant's twin brother in my shop! My issue would be the impact vibration traveling throughout the neighbourhood and me being imprisoned for having too much fun! I would like to see a vlog dedicated to you _using_ your power hammers and demonstrating their capabilities. Keep forging!
Your GREEN GIANT makes me turn green with envy... Here in Spain the market for used forging machines is almost non existent (the very rare pieces in the market are either scrap material or expensive as new ones). So I made my Ambrosio with an air compressor and a small pneumatic cilinder. I can hit harder with a sledge hammer, but he has a little more stamina... ;)
In Australia, I've found only a few for sale 2nd hand and all were way over my budget. Not in a rush to buy, more keeping a look out for one to add to my shop and I'll learn the art when I get all the gear I need to start.
I just love the way You talk about machinery, that is the way I feel about my machines (woodworking and welding). I think You could call this Green Giant THE HULK ;-). Keep up the great work. By the way You are an extraordinary educator....really, really good! You should be a professional teacher!!!
Hey Alec, seeins I wear the same name as your green giant I am a bit jelous that there is not one in my own shop. I enjoyed this presentation as well as all of the ones you do. Thanks for the work you do, K Pilkington
The Green Giant! Real cool tool for your shop a real work horse. It seems to make short work when you are doing your hammer orders. It does seem that you have really good control with the Green Giant. 😎
Another great video. Keep it up. Here in Florida I'm about to get nailed by a category 4 hurricane. The eye is passing just a few miles from my house. So... hope to see you again on saturday once it's over and if I have power back on by then. Take care brother. See ya on the other side.
Looks like a beautiful machine. Are you sure about the valving? On my beche it looks similar with one "valve cylinder", however on that cylinder there are two valves in "series" + check valve. Just curious... :) :)
I'm with you on this one Torbjorn not sure your right about the valves Alec. Also you said it uses suction to lift the ram????? Not sure your right there ether. That is a lot of suction to lift such a heavy thing. If you have some information on the hammer so i could see how it works that would be super cool man.
He is right actually ;) the pilkingtons and later Alldays & Onions hammers have one-way rams and is lifted by vacuum. and btw i have an almost identical hammer my self
I believe it hits harder because it uses a vacuum to pull the ram back up and it would require the piston the travel so far before creating enough vacuum to pull the ram based on how you described the operation.
Dammit Alec!!I am so excited about this hammer!I was about to aquire a VERY similar hammer last week, the deal fell apart...I am crazy disappointed to say the least. If you hear about a hammer of this stature....please let me know! I have the spot cleared and ready to plug this beast in and start forging with power!!
I've finally placed his face... Is he Stuart Little's big human brother? Just ribbing ya Alec. Love you're videos, your energy, and your product. you do some beautiful work.
The Green Giant is a beast!!! Nice. I only run a 50 lbs little giant. ( it hits harder than most others I've seen) I am starting to shop for my next hammer. Not sure to go with a brand new Anyang , or shop for something older. Any thoughts Alec? Great videos. I watch them all. Very fun, entertaining, and informative. Hammer on man!!!
Can this be a "Canadian" Pilkington? Have found an advertising poster from 1906 from canada And they measuring in metric ...? because of the "200" 200 mm instead of 8 inches for the hammer diameter
@Alec Steele I am a new subber, but have watch a little b4 subbing. Love the channel, and all the things you make. I would call this Godzilla being so old, green, and monstrous. :) Love your channel keep up the good work, and stay safe.
its a beautiful thing old machines are so much better than the modern they are functional, ergonomic long lasting and effective my expertise is wood working same with wood working machines Ohh and heavy!!

He could produce his own show for Discovery orso but they would want him in a strangle hold contract. So then they might want to consider power raising the amount they are used to paying for a top-show. And even then... I don't think it would be the same, nor feel the same.
OMG first!
God help us if he ever becomes a used car salesman...
Alec, very informative, and very entertaining!
AAR
I know, I'm ready to drive it off the lot.
I agree, Alec can have a career in sales. With a talk like that, you can sell sand in the Sahara. In the meantime, I'm sold on the green giant. Please state your price, Alec ;)

Albert Rasch pretty fucking much😂
There were three of those machines in the Apprentices workshop in HMS Caledonia in 1977 ! Bloody marvelous machines!
As a Texan, I appreciate all the various memorabilia you have around the shop. I fly the same flags! Come and take it! Keep up the good work

The Green Giant! Beautiful machine!
I cant figure out how much is just plain old eccentricity and how much is humor. Either way your bloody great to watch.
This thing is awesome. I could watch this thing work all day.
The green giant is a wonderful piece of machinery.

Make a new video... Please. :)

Can this be a "Canadian" Pilkington?
Have found an advertising poster from 1906 from canada
And they measuring in metric ...? because of the "200"
200 mm instead of 8 inches for the hammer diameter
+Axel K that's so cool! Can you send me a photo of the poster!? I'd love to see it! Info@alecsteeleblacksmith.com
here is a link were i found this ther is one more from 1895 www.vintagemachinery.org/mfgindex/imagedetail.aspx?id=8688
1906 was well before canada switched to metric. possible, but not likely. We started implementing the metric system in the 1970's
Very nice machine
