No..... was one of his best.... just getting back into wrestling from his absence.... you can see how timid he was and unsure at the start, but as the match progressed Jericho brought the HBK in Shawn.... was a BRILLIANT match and easily my favorite of all time.

And nearly all of the former were back in the 90s when the WWE didn't care as much about putting on technical masterpieces (Ruthless Aggression Era had the best matches).
please just watch it I just watched it for the 1st time now and it's my new favourite match of all time. I preferred the wrestling a little more in 25 but the ending in 26 takes it above 25 for me.
Hogan/Warrior deserves an honorable mention. Granted, it is no technical masterpiece, but much like Hogan/Rock the atmosphere, starpower, and crowd interaction makes it fun to watch even to this day

ajbahus Wrestlemania 20 ending > Wrestlemania 30 ending. Daniel Bryan had already been world champion before. Benoit and Guerrero had worked for 18 years and both put on better matches than the one Daniel Bryan put on Wrestlemania 30. There is no better way to finish Wrestlemania with having two best friend that deserved to be at the top of the company close off the show.
The crowd dynamic at X-8 for the Hogan vs Rock match is the greatest I've ever watched live. There have been a few louder crowds. But the overwhelming and nonstop roaring from the crowd was amazing. The fact that they had 80,000+ people SCREAMING for 3 minutes just by standing there tells you all you need to know about how The Rock and Hogan got where they are. Technical wrestling is great to watch. But charisma puts asses in seats. Even better was how the crowd flipped the script and how brilliantly and willingly The Rock and Hogan adjusted to it. Wonderful match. THAT is what Wrestlemania is about!
Edge tells that Taker actually wanted him to win.... but Vince wouldn't go for it..... and neither did Edge...... now that was class.... to not want to take away the Streak..... Edge was nothing but GREAT... ALWAYS!
+Carlos Juarez Before Taker had his show stealing mania matches with HBK and HHH, his confrontation with Edge in the main event of WM 24 was his best mania match, not to mention, Edge came the closest to breaking the streak in that match ( Pre-HBK and HHH ). The build-up to that match was no slouch either. They built it around the fact that Edge had an undefeated WM streak of his own ( they most likely forgot or chose to ignore WM 23 MITB ) and also the fact that Taker had never beaten Edge till that point. The story-telling and psychology in that match was flawless as well.
I really liked Hogan Vs Vince at WM 19. That bloody face peering over the apron, the ladder spot during the match and the actual history between them made this match awesome.
Love that you threw out an honorable mention to Savage-Flair @ WM8. An amazing buildup with the crowd 100% behind a justifiably enraged babyface, excellent commentary by Heenan and Monsoon, and Savage getting to celebrate a title win without Hogan trying to upstage him. If only the match had closed the show.
I think the technical aspect of Rock versus Hogan is underrated. What impresses me the most about the match is how that in spite of the crowd cheering for Hogan they still managed to give the crowd exactly what they wanted. The crowd loved the match and the interaction with the crowd is unbelievable.

In terms of memorable matches, it is right up there with the very best....but a hardcore match doesn't really spell 'great in-ring professional wrestling performance' as the other candidates in the list, so....
Glad to see Angle vs. HBK made honorable mention. I remember watching as a kid being on the edge of my seat, being so mad that Amgle pulled out the win. I think HBK went on to win the next two confrontations ending the feud but Angle would say "I won at WM and that's only what matters."
When you rewatch the Bret/Austin WM 13 match, it's kind of surprising how much Bret dominated the match. Austin hadn't hit his peak yet, so it felt like Bret was never really in danger of losing. It was almost a glorified squash when you really look at it. Still an awesome match though, just not as even as I remembered it being. :)
Well, that was kind of the point. They were trying to build Austin the entire match. Bret was the face in the beginning, beating down the heel. But Austin kept coming back, kept taking it, right to the end where he would not submit, but rather pass out. It was great storytelling for sure.
I may have nostalgia glasses, but Hogan v Andre the Giant in Wrestlemania III was such a huge and exciting event that I think it should at least be mentioned.
One correction, the first televised Ladder match was Bret Hart vs. HBK in '92. Given it was "WWF Wrestling Challenge" and not a PPV, it's easy to see why HBK/Ramon had a bigger influence/impact because it was on Wrestlemania where everyone around the world saw it for the first time.
Actually that was just a Demo match for Vince's sake. Bret had come to him with the idea of a ladder match years before, but Vince just didn't get it. Finally Bret convinced Vince to let him show how it was done. Shawn had no idea what to do, so Bret walked him through it.... He asked Shawn to never steal the match..... and then later... Shawn went to Vince and suggested a ladder match with Razor. I love Shawn to death, but he was a real dick back then... and he will be the first to admit it.
iirc that one was never aired until years later (think it was part of a collection/best of HBK vs Bret Hart) ..I may be WAY OFF but that's what I think .

Thank you! Savage vs Flair at WM8 gets overlooked far too often, and was the high point of Mania that year. Nice to see it on a list, even if it's an honorable mention.
Taker/Michaels 2 was a great match, but in my opinion it gets beat out by another one...Taker/Helmsly 3, Wrestlemania 28. Taker/Helmsly 3, the "end of an era" match, was such a triumph of pro wrestling as storytelling. Every move had weight behind it, the pace was right where it needed to be, the reactions of all three men in the ring (Michaels was guest ref for this match) was perfect. Hell, I'd say that Shawn's reactions after those late match near falls were some of his best spots ever. Yes, in my opinion no match sense this one has fully captured the essence of wrestling as a storytelling medium. It truly was the end of an era.

Honestly, being completely truthful here.... your #8 is my #1. TLC 2 is literally my favorite wrestling match of all time. With my second favorite match ever (but it wasn't a WM match) was Rock vs Mankind at Royal Rumble. The one with the million and one chair shots. That match was brutal yet beautiful.
I totally agree about Taker/HBK at WM26, I just loved the emotional factor. I watched it in a pub and the entire building was split between Taker and HBK for who to win. Such a classic!
I know this generation loves choreographed matches that dont seem like a fight as much as ballet, but I believe Hogan/Andre deserves to be on any top 10 list. The crowd was hot, the build was great, and it contained one of the most iconic moments in professional wrestling history. It was money.
Pretty sure Savage vs Steamboat was largely a bunch of choreographed pinfall attempts that the 80s crowd was very much into. Even wrestling critics back in the day had a low opinion of the Hogan vs Andre match, especially the Ric Flair fans. Many wrestling audiences who grew up in the 80s are the same ones who boo short matches today. The younger generations are newer to the product and are less likely to chant "you can't wrestle".
Personally I preferred Taker and Shawn's Mania 25 match. There was less at stake, but there was much more of a "new" feeling to the whole thing. The two hasn't faced each other at Mania before then, so everything they did felt much more fresh and exciting. Plus the psychology was absolutely incredible to me. Seeing Michaels frantically beg the referee to count Undertaker out showed just how desperate he was to get his win, along with the fear he had that Undertaker really was almost unbeatable. Plus the whole "Finisher-Kick out" fest hadn't become the norm yet, so seeing it done so many times was insane, and many of the near falls felt believable. Even with the botched suicide dive, the Mania 25 match is my pick for the greatest of all time. In fact, that match is my favorite EVER. I can't think of a single match I've loved more than that one. Great video though, glad Michaels vs Taker still made it to the top of the list. :P
You're not - you're 100% right. It was a good match, but not nearly as phenomenal as people seem to remember. It's not even the best hour-long match in WWE history...I'd put HHH-Rock at Judgment Day 2000 and possibly even HBK-Cena on RAW in 2007 over it. And make no mistake, while I have respect for all of them, I rate Bret and Shawn above HHH, Rock, and Cena on my all-time greats list.

Dont get me wrong, I LOVED Taker and Shawn's 25 Match, but like Brian said: The story was better and i personally think everything flowed more naturally. Plus, the video package to the rematch was one of the most perfect things i've ever seen in my life. Also, good video Brian.

A couple honorable mention picks: - Savage vs. Warrior, WM7 One hell of a moving story. - CM Punk vs. Undertaker, WM29 Excellent execution. Real drama & uncertainty over whether Taker would DQ over Punk's mind games.

Great matches not doubt and its great that you took the time to make this list as its very difficult to come up with just 8 matches as everyone will have an opinion. A few other that I would either put on the list or as an honourable mention would be Hogan vs Warrior at WrestleMania 6, it probably could of be switched out with Hogan vs Rock as it was a better match. Another one that could be added is Warrior vs Savage career ending match at WrestleMania 7, only match worth mentioning for that event. Bret Hart vs the late Rowdy Roddy Piper for the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania 8. Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho at Mania 19 was pretty damn good also
I was at Wrestlemania 18, and while there was a lot of support for Hogan, there were also plenty of people cheering for the Rock. Love the rest of your work, this is just a minor correction, but, yeah, it was awesome.

That bloody face peering over the apron, the ladder spot during the match and the actual history between them made this match awesome.
Love that you threw out an honorable mention to Savage-Flair @ WM8. An amazing buildup with the crowd 100% behind a justifiably enraged babyface, excellent commentary by Heenan and Monsoon, and Savage getting to celebrate a title win without Hogan trying to upstage him. If only the match had closed the show.

I think the technical aspect of Rock versus Hogan is underrated. What impresses me the most about the match is how that in spite of the crowd cheering for Hogan they still managed to give the crowd exactly what they wanted. The crowd loved the match and the interaction with the crowd is unbelievable.
Steamboat v. Savage is still my favorite Mania match.

In terms of memorable matches, it is right up there with the very best....but a hardcore match doesn't really spell 'great in-ring professional wrestling performance' as the other candidates in the list, so....

Glad to see Angle vs. HBK made honorable mention. I remember watching as a kid being on the edge of my seat, being so mad that Amgle pulled out the win. I think HBK went on to win the next two confrontations ending the feud but Angle would say "I won at WM and that's only what matters."
When you rewatch the Bret/Austin WM 13 match, it's kind of surprising how much Bret dominated the match. Austin hadn't hit his peak yet, so it felt like Bret was never really in danger of losing. It was almost a glorified squash when you really look at it. Still an awesome match though, just not as even as I remembered it being. :)
Well, that was kind of the point. They were trying to build Austin the entire match. Bret was the face in the beginning, beating down the heel. But Austin kept coming back, kept taking it, right to the end where he would not submit, but rather pass out. It was great storytelling for sure.
Still, it was THE MATCH of WM 13. If THE MATCH didn't happen, WM 13 would be on par for one of the worst WrestleMania's ever.

I may have nostalgia glasses, but Hogan v Andre the Giant in Wrestlemania III was such a huge and exciting event that I think it should at least be mentioned.

One correction, the first televised Ladder match was Bret Hart vs. HBK in '92. Given it was "WWF Wrestling Challenge" and not a PPV, it's easy to see why HBK/Ramon had a bigger influence/impact because it was on Wrestlemania where everyone around the world saw it for the first time.
Actually that was just a Demo match for Vince's sake. Bret had come to him with the idea of a ladder match years before, but Vince just didn't get it. Finally Bret convinced Vince to let him show how it was done. Shawn had no idea what to do, so Bret walked him through it.... He asked Shawn to never steal the match..... and then later... Shawn went to Vince and suggested a ladder match with Razor. I love Shawn to death, but he was a real dick back then... and he will be the first to admit it.

Thank you! Savage vs Flair at WM8 gets overlooked far too often, and was the high point of Mania that year. Nice to see it on a list, even if it's an honorable mention.
Taker/Michaels 2 was a great match, but in my opinion it gets beat out by another one...Taker/Helmsly 3, Wrestlemania 28. Taker/Helmsly 3, the "end of an era" match, was such a triumph of pro wrestling as storytelling. Every move had weight behind it, the pace was right where it needed to be, the reactions of all three men in the ring (Michaels was guest ref for this match) was perfect. Hell, I'd say that Shawn's reactions after those late match near falls were some of his best spots ever. Yes, in my opinion no match sense this one has fully captured the essence of wrestling as a storytelling medium. It truly was the end of an era.

I swear there hasn't been a bad ladder match at Mania. Correct me if I'm wrong, more than likely a bad money in the bank match, but most of them seem great. Just hope The club, Sheamus and Cesaro, and Enzo and Cass can keep the trend going.
The IC ladder match at WM 31 was probably the best ladder match in Mania history if not just for the headbutt spot alone.

Honestly, being completely truthful here.... your #8 is my #1. TLC 2 is literally my favorite wrestling match of all time. With my second favorite match ever (but it wasn't a WM match) was Rock vs Mankind at Royal Rumble. The one with the million and one chair shots. That match was brutal yet beautiful.

I totally agree about Taker/HBK at WM26, I just loved the emotional factor. I watched it in a pub and the entire building was split between Taker and HBK for who to win. Such a classic!
I know this generation loves choreographed matches that dont seem like a fight as much as ballet, but I believe Hogan/Andre deserves to be on any top 10 list. The crowd was hot, the build was great, and it contained one of the most iconic moments in professional wrestling history. It was money.
Pretty sure Savage vs Steamboat was largely a bunch of choreographed pinfall attempts that the 80s crowd was very much into. Even wrestling critics back in the day had a low opinion of the Hogan vs Andre match, especially the Ric Flair fans. Many wrestling audiences who grew up in the 80s are the same ones who boo short matches today. The younger generations are newer to the product and are less likely to chant "you can't wrestle".

Personally I preferred Taker and Shawn's Mania 25 match. There was less at stake, but there was much more of a "new" feeling to the whole thing. The two hasn't faced each other at Mania before then, so everything they did felt much more fresh and exciting. Plus the psychology was absolutely incredible to me. Seeing Michaels frantically beg the referee to count Undertaker out showed just how desperate he was to get his win, along with the fear he had that Undertaker really was almost unbeatable. Plus the whole "Finisher-Kick out" fest hadn't become the norm yet, so seeing it done so many times was insane, and many of the near falls felt believable. Even with the botched suicide dive, the Mania 25 match is my pick for the greatest of all time. In fact, that match is my favorite EVER. I can't think of a single match I've loved more than that one. Great video though, glad Michaels vs Taker still made it to the top of the list. :P

You're not - you're 100% right. It was a good match, but not nearly as phenomenal as people seem to remember. It's not even the best hour-long match in WWE history...I'd put HHH-Rock at Judgment Day 2000 and possibly even HBK-Cena on RAW in 2007 over it. And make no mistake, while I have respect for all of them, I rate Bret and Shawn above HHH, Rock, and Cena on my all-time greats list.
finally someone who likes the 26 match more than the 25 match. Dont get me wrong, I LOVED Taker and Shawn's 25 Match, but like Brian said: The story was better and i personally think everything flowed more naturally. Great matches not doubt and its great that you took the time to make this list as its very difficult to come up with just 8 matches as everyone will have an opinion. A few other that I would either put on the list or as an honourable mention would be Hogan vs Warrior at WrestleMania 6, it probably could of be switched out with Hogan vs Rock as it was a better match. Another one that could be added is Warrior vs Savage career ending match at WrestleMania 7, only match worth mentioning for that event. Bret Hart vs the late Rowdy Roddy Piper for the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania 8. Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho at Mania 19 was pretty damn good also
I was at Wrestlemania 18, and while there was a lot of support for Hogan, there were also plenty of people cheering for the Rock. Love the rest of your work, this is just a minor correction, but, yeah, it was awesome.
I remember the great commentating of JR after the kick out of one of the Tombstones of the Taker-Michaels Match at WM 26 "i just had an out of body experience" 🤣🤣
That leaping Tombstone that put Shawn away will forever be my memory of that match... an ironic "!" to a legendary career!
My favorite Mania matches were honorable mentions, Angle/Shawn & Angle/Lesnar and I disagree with a lot of the list in general but I was stoked you put Shawn/Taker XXVI over their XXV bout. Definitely the better of the two in my opinion
