It was Kil´jaeden who conceived the plan of creating a Lich King and using Ner´zhul, so I´d say Kil is even more badass than his puppet Arthas (poor Boy....he had a great future alonside Jaina... The Legion MUST FALL!!!!)
For me lore sucks, and only warcraft 1, 2 and 3 is canon, they killed the lich king for the sake of content and raids, Arthas was very strong but in total control of Ner'zul he could've kill everyone in Azeroth but he was just sitting there in ICC doing nothing waiting to die like a raid boss a good boss fight i know i killed him in 25 heroic and it was glorius but it felt so wrong why Arthas is fighting ner'zul now? And all the souls when they could've done that a long time ago before he had the helm of Domination, that helm didn't do shit in wow, it meant nothing, no domination at all, and that thing about there must always be a lich king it makes Illidan look dumb for wanting to destroy the frozen throne.

It is in the book Arthas Rise of the Lich King. pretty much, he gets him as a baby, looks after him but can't wait to ride him, he rides him but because he's so young, he kills him :(, so, arthas buries his friend, and then years later he realises that he can raise the dead... he goes back to the burial ground of Invincible, and raises him from the dead to accompany him
