That was funny that that happened to your dad, same thing happened to me many years ago with my dad who is now 91. He told me never to back up with out twice looking back first, well , next day, we were in the car going to summer Bible school, he backed up and ran into a car , we both just busted out laughing. It’s great to have a great relationship with your dad!
The unmistakable sound of a square baler, rarely heard anymore around me. Not much mystery why small square balers gave way to large round. Speed as much as anything. I can often run 60 , 4x4 round bales per hour, which would be equal to 600 small square bales. Net wrap goes on in 3 second and no knots to tie. My tie stall barn is head to head, and I just roll the bales down the feed alley in front of the cows to feed. No question with one man baling and one man hauling, you could really move a lot of hay in a day, using less fuel and less brute strength. Still fun to watch, thanks for making these videos. You farm the way we all used to do in the 70’s and 80’s.
Nice to see that green alfalfa all baled up and heading into the loft. Acres of Clay channel this spring one of the boys got two flats on their big challenger discing with deer antlers puncturing the tires. They dairy farm near Grand Rapids, Mi.
When I was in the 3rd grade one of my first tractor jobs was raking hay on a International 240 pulling a new idea side rake. I turned too short trying to make a double windrow and the rake rode up on the right rear tire and almost ended up on top of me in the tractor seat. It bent the steel pretty bad on one of the beams between the hitch and the main part of the rake but it still worked so we left it that way. It reminded me everytime I looked at it how lucky I was.
There's a trick to knotters, I think I remember they recommend taking all stuff out of baler at years end and cleaning with air. John T Thank you for sharing.
Glad you guys got another hay crop for the year. I love watching the old equipment and the old fashioned way of baling hay. It's awesome to see that people still do it that way. Thanks for another great video
We always put salt on our small squares. Easy to do in the barn with a small hand spreader. Back in the 60s, 70s and 80s we used a coffee can with holes punched in the bottom of the can. Used nails to make the holes. We kids that job making the holes in can and salting the hay in the barn. To small to stack hay but big enough to be part of the action!
Man that beat juice sure does make a mess you weren't kidding. All of our stuff is still calcium and we have all the extremely rusty flaky rims to prove it lol. I'm seriously considering trying windshield wash fluid. I know of a couple guys that do it. It's not corrosive, it doesn't freeze completely solid the most it will do is get slushy and extreme cold weather and it's cheap. You can buy a 55 gallon drum of windshield wash for like 100 bucks through Napa last I checked. Awesome video guys
I had a new Holland baler with same problem there is an spring adjustment knob turn it counterclockwise ihalf a turn. It fixed are problem. Maybe fix yours. Great videos keep them coming
Love your channel and nice to see green grass here in Kansas it's not so green and been feeding hay since 2 week of July keep up with the videos l watch them all and always give them a 👍
I have a JD baler, but I remember a NH knotter being almost identical. Your wiper arm and twine knife are quite important. The twine knife must be sharp. they can be sharpened up to a point. After that , replace. The wiper arm will wear and leave the knot on the bill hook. Bend the wiper arm to make it JUST slide by and move the knot off. Tucker fingers acting up will sometimes cause a missed tie, but that's not what you described. Good luck!
I found on that type of knotter system when the knife gets dull it Tweaks the wipe off arm out of adjustment just enough not to pull the knot off the billhook It's happened to me before. I replaced the wipe off arm and it goes back to working just as it should.
Check with your NH dealer to see if they have a kit for the sweeper arm. I use a 336 John Deere and replaced mine. NH knotters are the same from what I am told. The sweeper arm has to have 10 lbs of sweeping pressure on the bottom of the bill hook. rotate the knotter up and use your fish scale to determine if you have enough pressure to release the knot from the bill hook (that is what my book says to do). If it is not contacting bill hook then adjust it until it hits and scrapes the knot off. When I started, mine were not aligned and was not scraping. New kit, adjusted and was breaking string. I use 7200 sisel. My dealer said my top tension was too tight. released a little and it stopped. Hope this helps.
I have worked on knotters. They can be tricky if you don’t know how to set one up. I had a lot of experience with Freeman 330 balers. I owned 2 of them.
More than 40 years ago those New Holland balers were alteady known for having issues with the knotters. You have to keep them relatively clean. The dust and sand make them don‘t work properly. Every few hundred bales blow them off with a leafblower.
Looks like you're getting done just fine. Pretty sweet running the 2 balers, good to have a backup anyways. We had to replace the whole knotter assembly after about a million bales, didn't seem like it cost that much, but then that was 15 years ago or so.
Check your operators manual the 575 operators book has all the info you need to work on knotters. You guys can fix. Knotters are simple if you really look close and slow it down. if the not stays on billhook probally need to bend the knife arm actually needs to scrape across head of the bill hook. a lot of knotter adjustments are made by bending the knife arm. compare the clearance on the other knotter that is working correctly. i deal with farmers all day long......trust me you guys can fix this your a smart bunch
I love watching hay baling, thx for the explanations! I'm amazed at farmer's mechanic skills. Those old balers have a lot of moving parts to break as does all farm equipment. I really prefer square bales, but I'm a horse person. Out here in Northern California, our 3 strand bales are running $25 and up at the feed store with the drought! They have the safest, best quality hay because all our gentleman farmers don't know their toxic weeds nor best baling time. Your farm and hay quality is beautiful.💙
Love these hay videos! It looks beautiful in Wisconsin. You can tell you guys take pride in your equipment and tractors. They have an NH 311 with a kicker on it at my job and they run it with a JD 6400. We didn't really use kickers on our farm when I was a kid but I enjoy seeing y'all's set up. Keep up the great work and God bless. - Everett
I was working for this farmer and he told me to take the 620JD & 717 NH chopper, and chop the hay that was ready. So, I was just starting, and he come along and said : i'll chop this load and you can do the rest- So he does. Just ready to shut the chopper off, and clunk! The shear bar was loose and moved back into the knives. Had to dump the load of chop. Bent the reel, took out some knives, and thru the pan. expensive fix. I said glad you came along, that would have been me! so from then on we made sure the bolts were tight, and carried a socket with us, and keep it checked! Does beet juice freeze?
Every time I see all those small square bales being man handled in and out of sheds I praise the lord for large squares, large rounds and loaders. But, I guess if you have a market for small squares then that’s the way you have to go. Regards from Down Under.
I know in Eastern Pennsylvania there are places that rebuild lots of old equipment. Because farming is generally a much more serious business out in the midwest most farms have a more modern equipment stock. Not saying there are no folks like you guys. I think here in the northeast we just have many many more small farms, many that are really hobbies at this point so the investment in modern brand new machines is less. There is a bigger market for old equipment repair. I'll talk to some guys and gals and if I find any who specialize in reconditioning knotters if forward the info on.
Great video, I was just wondering about your home life, do you go to public schools or home schooled and being from the south, I was wondering what foods do you enjoy . So sorry if you feel like I'm getting in your busy. Again great video !!!!
hi, Ive been watching your videos for about 6 months. i absolutely love your content. I am always learning. there is one aspect of your farming and content that I think everyone needs to better understand. it would be really beneficial to know how you guys actually make money! everything you do in input intensive. what about the money? if theres good money to be made I am certain others would try farming too. I think it would be really worthwhile if you spent at least one episode on the profits of your farming operation.
On your parts for the knotters: i've gotten what they call renewal kits or rebuild kits that come with new bill hooks bushings everything from central tractor catalog which I think is now value built and it might even be called something else now this is probably 10 years ago. But back when I ordered those parts you could get pretty much everything with a little Google research you might be able to find out if they're around they are in Iowa I believe. Shoup had some stuff as well, as far as buying the entire assembly I don't know maybe eBay or some thing but you guys could definitely rebuild them yourselves depending what's worn out. The problem is just like you were saying once they get worn and they have some play it's hard to get them right and it's like they're never right again after that. We've got a John Deere baler with worn out knotters an even after replacing some bushings they still seemed like you couldn't get through 100 acres without at least 10 broken bales. I do have all the service manuals for the 575 Baylor which I think is what yours is, I'm sure you guys have those books to but if you don't let me know you're welcome to some photocopies or I can scan them and send them to you as a PDF
Sorry for the terrible wording on that comment I use that talk to text feature so I don't have to type but you end up with one long sentence that makes no sense😂
Things happen. During 2nd cutting for me , I picked up a hunting arrow in the sidewall of the JD 3020 and that shut me down for a couple hours. Crap happens sometimes.
I never get tired of the amazing view. And it is really cool to see both balers in the same field. Was that the 7505 hauling hay from the field to the barn? Thank you for another great video and hay season is still my favorite time of the year
An "Old-Timer" here said "The loneliest place on earth is under a broke-down square baler in the middle of the hayfield..." Mr. Audie had many such truisms.
Yep. Grease , Grease, Grease those fittings around the knoters. Keep them clean of the dust and hay schaff. Our baler is 60 years young and will knot perfect for a hundred bales. Usually if there is a knotting fail its our fault. Too fast.
thanks guys for the video I did the same thing with the rake with 44 massy knotters suck we have a 430 international with old style knotters it would miss about 8 bales out of a100 its good feeling win your done for the day
We also put some grease on the shaft that turns to catch the wire but I am talking about a wire baler I don't know if you have that same Shaft or not on a string baler
Hello at least you didnt slice the tire even though the tube now days is expensive and the beat juice. Can you repair yourself? I have a John Deere 327 with a ejector but I never enjoyed unloading since all the bales are mixed up, a stacked wagon I like better. How many bales you get on your wagon I usually put 175 185 on my wagon steel rack 20ft . Enjoyed your video see you then.
If you have knotters , you'll have fun and games , from when I was a boy following the reaper binder standing up the stooks many times I was caught standing in the field , ball of twine in the pocket using my trusty pocket knife tying the stooks cos the knotter was goosed . Do as I say not as I do boys. That was cool he asked Dad to explain how it happened with a grin on his face, now he has it on tape exactly what to say tp Pop if it happens to him someday lol......
Is it true if you bake hay when it's too damp and then put it up in the barn it can cause a barn fire and my second question do you stop every so often and move bales to front of wagon on the auto loader or do they fall forward on there own?? Thanks for the video I enjoy watching your channel :)

That's impressive. I've been looking for a good trader that can help me trade and make good profits, But it's very hard to see a trusted one... I'm so happy I found this day
Nothing great video Growing up on the farm never had anything to do with baler with a thrower They look like 6 to 8 inches shorter. Good luck with your Knotter
Knotters ... the bane of small baling.
Hot work in the barn, brings back some memories...

Yes. More equipment
Onelonleyfarmer knows anything and everything about knotters
You could make an Extension for the drawbar on the Oliver !!! 3-4 inches 😊
Nice to see that green alfalfa all baled up and heading into the loft.

Can't help the break downs they will happen, good stuff guys👍👍👍👍👍👍
its a great feeling at the end of summer when the hay mow is full!!! Its hard work at the time but great time spent with friends, family and neighbors
Mowing hay on a hot August day, you guy sure know how to have fun. Thanks again for another great video.
Ole dad eating humble pie lol priceless
Yes cause you know that Dads never make any mistakes....

Glad you got all the hay up, it looks REALLY nice!!!

My grandpa taught me to do so as well, I still salt any heavier bales to this day
I stacked bales a couple years ago, it's a good way to let you how good shape you are in and your age.

Green Grove parts and repair N13184 Ramada Ave Curtis WI 54422 , They adjusted the knotters on our baler and they worked perfectly.
With two balers the hay really flies off your fields.

I'm fixing to go start baling 90 of second cutting
I have worked on knotters. They can be tricky if you don’t know how to set one up. I had a lot of experience with Freeman 330 balers. I owned 2 of them.
1st cut small squares are going for $8 a bale. I was always proud of every bale I threw!

There was a guy advertising in Green Magazine. Nelson Horning who rebuilt knotters. I think he was charging $500 per.
I was working for this farmer and he told me to take the 620JD & 717 NH chopper, and chop the hay that was ready. So, I was just starting, and he come along and said : i'll chop this load and you can do the rest- So he does. Just ready to shut the chopper off, and clunk! onelonelyfarmer wes is pretty slick about knotters, you might talk to him

Plenty of horses on that 575;)…. Will there be a haylage video this year as well?

Over the weekend I purchased a 16x9 bale wagon and was wondering how many bales (approximately-rough guess) you typically get per your wagons?
An "Old-Timer" here said "The loneliest place on earth is under a broke-down square baler in the middle of the hayfield..." Mr. Audie had many such truisms.
On the knotters: Pete ("Just a Few Acres Farm") says "Oil, oil oil!" May or may not help.
Yep. Grease , Grease, Grease those fittings around the knoters. Keep them clean of the dust and hay schaff. Our baler is 60 years young and will knot perfect for a hundred bales. Usually if there is a knotting fail its our fault. Too fast.
thanks guys for the video I did the same thing with the rake with 44 massy knotters suck we have a 430 international with old style knotters it would miss about 8 bales out of a100 its good feeling win your done for the day
Splash a little clear kerosene on the knotters makes the twine grab and slide off better. Our. IH 45 would not tie without it
It happens to everyone. How many bales d do you put up in a year. Do you chop 3rd crop??
Great video as always
We also put some grease on the shaft that turns to catch the wire but I am talking about a wire baler I don't know if you have that same Shaft or not on a string baler
Hello at least you didnt slice the tire even though the tube now days is expensive and the beat juice. Can you repair yourself? Wow, what a hay day! How many acres was that, and how many bales did you pull in? Thanks for sharing it.
If you have knotters , you'll have fun and games , from when I was a boy following the reaper binder standing up the stooks many times I was caught standing in the field , ball of twine in the pocket using my trusty pocket knife tying the stooks cos the knotter was goosed . Then on through time , same scenario with balers and harvesters . All good stuff . Great video 👍🇬🇧 . I didn't get into repairing , when I was a boy the blacksmith fixed it and getting older the dealer sent out a nimble fingered bloke . Somehow I feel something missing in my education. 🤔
Is it a pretty big dairy area u live in looks like some other big farms around u ?
Looks like a crime scene!LOL
Question I have is..........if one of the boys did that would pop's have blown a gasket? No gasket gets blown when pop's does it though😂
Do as I say not as I do boys. That was cool he asked Dad to explain how it happened with a grin on his face, now he has it on tape exactly what to say tp Pop if it happens to him someday lol......
What kind of miss tie are you dealing with? Is the knot hanging on the bill hook?
love the content
Indeed!
Is it true if you bake hay when it's too damp and then put it up in the barn it can cause a barn fire and my second question do you stop every so often and move bales to front of wagon on the auto loader or do they fall forward on there own?? Thanks for the video I enjoy watching your channel :)
I think that if I was going to bale hay that I'd prefer a wire tie baler bale integrating is what I want
yup is right good it happened to some one else!
Do you guys square bale all your hay? I've noticed none of your videos show a round baler
Does the finger got a grovewore in it
Years ago farm kids were paid .05cents a bale to pickup square bales in Northwest Arkansas 20 bales equal $1.00
Put a little kerosene on the knotters the clear kero always worked for us if the twine did not slide
We use a drop of mineral oil and tight twine. We used a cheaper "fuzzier" twine once and it didn't go well.
Ford power on a new Holland baler lol what the blue emblem looks like lol I like fords and no hardly any of my fords left me walking more chevys did that lol
How many bales today?
How many bales this day?
Hey guys,,,just curious. Do you feel small square bales retain more RFV than large round? More leaf retention?
There's a place in Penn Yan new York that all they do is baler s. Sorry don't have number. I'll try find it
How many cows do u milk
Horse people prefer small square bales ease of storage and handling
Marshall Indiana kings repair new Holland dealer rebuilds knotters
