  • Folks, if you have leyland cypress trees, then you've probably noticed that at times, part- or all of the trees- may turn brown. There are several different factors contributing to the browning of your leyland cypress trees, and in this video we explain these different scenarios that lead to the browning of your cypress trees and we tell you what you can do about each condition.

    I had a Leyland Cyprus that turn all brown and I tried everything to save it . My conclusion was that Spider Mites had killed it. It was about 7 feet tall so I dug it up and replace it with another one, putting the "dead" tree by a shed, on top of the ground. About a month later after a hard rain, I saw some green on the "dead" tree that was laying by the shed. I thought is this thing coming back to life? I went and planted it with some water and it did come totally back to life, all green top to bottom. I call it my Lazarous Tree.

    Great presentation! Thank you. I live in Oregon in a heavily, federal, doug fir area. I have logging trucks zipping by one right after another. Noise control it won't do much, but dust and dirt it helps. Our biggest problem in last few years have been drought and fires.

    Down here in northeastern SC we had a very wet spring and summer until mid August when it went dry for about three weeks. Mid way into the dry period, four of my Leyland's turned pale green, then a few days later started turning brown from the inside out and bottom up. These trees are 4 years old, about 6-7' tall and seemed very well established. The land where they sit is well drained, sandy soil. They all made it through Hurricane Florence.
    I'm hoping I can save these beautiful trees with the information I've learned from your great video. Thank you!

I did not realize it at the time but his sprinkler was hitting my trees and sure enough the back of the trees just what you said happened, the rusty leaves... and your information about why not spray with a pesticide is a great help.... Are you sure your not an ornamental horticulturists.. ? :-)… Thanks for your experience...and sharing your knowledge ...the photo that's Thor Military Police Dog retired like me now in Heavens waiting room...….Florida.. Thank You,this was really helpful and I learned quite a bit. Oh and also I miss that pretty green landscape from VA. It's not quite the same in terms of greenery since we moved to TX. My Cypress started browning on the sides last year and is now browning on the sides and the top, not sure if that meant we were too late but I appreciate all your tips. Thanks again.

    Great informative video. I have a Leyland Cypress that is about 2 years old and suddenly this summer branches keep breaking and hanging down until they fall off, they are breaking more than half way out from the trunk. If anyone has any ideas or info about why this may be occurring , I'd love to hear about it.

      These trees are the worst tree in the world to plant in a yard!

    • @ChitchatwithApril
      @ChitchatwithApril 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Three out of three in my yard have been a total pain. I worried and fed it over them for about seven months now. They started changing color within a month. Each month it’s getting worse. First I was told I wasn’t watering them enough for being new trees even though they were already 5 foot tall, they needed to get their roots rooted. And I was told maybe the holes were dug too deep and the ground wasn’t holding water and was going down into a cavern. Then I was told that the big tree that was in the yard might be overwhelming the new trees because of its tremendous root system. Therefore the new trees were not getting enough water. However for other trees that are alternatingly planted with the Leland’s, are doing just fine. Lelands were a good idea on paper but not in my yard LOL huge waste of time and money and my emotions.

    I have been watching this poor tree for about 10 years. The worst of all was that my neighbour insisted that it was healthy, because a lot of ivy was growing on it, litelally strangulating it.
    I even thought that maybe it was the ivy's fault! It's growing so well, giving the person looking at it a HEALTHY look...
    Would it be possible to save it, getting rid of all the lvy?

    That was a great video! I was just wondering how much water should you have at the trunk of a tree? I have a drain pipe from my kitchen sink that runs to a tree is that too much water? If you see water on the ground around the trunk is that bad? On tree is a cypress and the other is a pine.

      Under inner browning is usually caused by no sunlight due to branches of leaves that canopy, thus causing the browning

    I planted several on both sides of my property. Once one fell on my neighbors car. my neighbor took it well. I planted them too close to chimneys on both sides. So i need to start cutting. I'm looking for cool things to do with the branches and wood. For example blinds from the neighbors, benches, I looked all over pinterest but can't find anything I like yet. But I'd like to top off the trees so a rogue fire doesn't burn us all down. Could I cut them all down to about a 16 foot level and ise the branches and cut wood to make a better fence? i planted them so close to the house because i was dealing with abusive neighbors on one side. I just happen to crash one of the trees on the GOOD neighbor. They handled it very well.

    Oh, Hi Kevin, what you are doing here? I was just looking up how to ID Leyland Cypress and surprise SURPRISE!! How are yours doing now - August 2024? I planted a couple I grew from seed about 5-years ago and the one has to be getting towards 10' tall & in danger of suffocating an apple tree - if I cut the top out of it, will it hate me forever, die or just look UG Lee? My issue with mine is the ends of needles are browning, but it's widespread and uniform on the other one. Never had it before. It almost seems like it's from weather related issue since it's only been since winter time and after very cold weather?
    I have giant aborvitae that have a same browning or more of a yellowing on one side only and green on other side and its really on sun exposure side as well?? So this is something else going on. Almost like the sun exposure side is being affected, but why? Lack of chlorophyll? Never in past though. So is there something else coming from atmosphere?? The cedars and spruce shrubs aren't affected by this though? What's going on??
