    Just FYI when charging two batteries you should use slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 as stated in the instructions. The circuit board can get hot when you have two cells charging at .750 mA next to each other.

    • @Lightsngear
      @Lightsngear  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, accept it will only charge at .750 if the 2 cells have slot separation. Next to each other they'll be at 350mA.

      Ahh, that's why they want you to do it that way. Thanks for the info.

      Mine run fine with all slots filled, they don't get hot or even warm if I just use slots 1 + 2, that's using 9A EFest IMR's and 7.5A Torchy IMR's.
      I don't use it for anything but rechargeable AA's, AAA's and 1650 or 14500 IMR's.

    I own Maha C-9000. It is only for AA/AAA, but... can deliver up to 2A per each channel even 4 slots are set! This 375 mA limit is a bit ridiculous...

      Teapartyla True. I use D4 only for 18650. They are Li-ion so you can just charge them. But AA must be discharged before charging... So only in Maha.

      Personally, I have 4 sets of 4x 14500 IMR's, the charge time isn't that long at all, 375mAh may sound a little low, but if you just charge 2 at a time, the 750mAh charge is just perfect, you don't want to be dumping massive amounts of current into a single cell.
      When the battery is at almost full capacity, it slowly reduces the recharge rate to below 350mAh, which is great as it doesn't overstress your batteries and keeps them cool, making the lifespan of the cells longer, plus batteries charged at a cooler ambient temperature, for example by an open window (as long as it's not raining!) or fan last longer in general, both during use and when recharging them repeatedly over time, I'd rather take the "safe" option and charge at a more "comfortable" rate for the cells than just shoving in as much charge as fast as possible, and what's 20-30 minutes in the grand scheme of things? That's why I have 4 sets of 4, I can always have some ready to use and the rest in a safe, plastic camera-battery boxes.
      My LiPo Charger (a Turnigy S60) charges a 132 Amp (2200mAh 60C 2S (8.4v)) in about 30 minutes from storage charge, at 2.2 Amps, which isn't that long a time at all.

    You didn’t get into if you hold down the mode button. It changes to LifePO4. Since I just picked this up I have no idea what that is. It makes the lithium ion batteries I’m charging now look like they have a higher charge somehow. Should I not even bother with that mode? If I am charging 18 650s?

    Lots of questions very sorry.

    • @Lightsngear
      @Lightsngear  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late reply!! CC= constant current. CV=constant voltage. Since the D4 came out a few years ago, it doesn't have some of the more advanced features of current-day chargers, therefore it can't monitor mAh... only battery voltage.
      Hope that answers your questions!

      The only way to know for sure is to put them in a charger and see what happens. If they're 10 years old and haven't been used they might be completely dead but many chargers can revive dead batteries. Keep power is a good brand.

    • @mattvonnerf3495
      @mattvonnerf3495 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, it'll charge anything it says on the box (plus probably some others) to their full, true capacity, it's an "intelligent" charger so it knows exactly how much power is required to fully charge a cell of virtually any mAh or Current value safely.
      I've used mine to charge all manner of batteries and it does so quite quickly, just leave them to "rest" for 10 minutes or so after charging before using them, just to make sure they don't get worn and thereby increasing the batteries internal resistance, causing them to under-perform.

    • @Lightsngear
      @Lightsngear  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      PI37U When you say, "after a while" how long do you mean? Is it a li-ion or an NiMH? What make of battery is it? I must say I've never had that happen, except for when a battery is first placed in a slot, the 'bars' will show it full for a few seconds...then it'll stabilize to where it's showing the correct current charge.

    • @PI37U
      @PI37U 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Syrbuff Was referring to this video.@4:17 you put in the 3rd battery wich shows at 4,08V until @5:21 it finally drops to 3,58V. So it took the charger over a minute to determine that the 3rd battery wasn't full but actually fully drained. Would like to know if that particular battery was an old/faulty one and if it wasn't, why it took so long for the charger to start showing real values.

    • @Lightsngear
      @Lightsngear  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      PI37U Thanks for pointing that out! I hadn't noticed that before. It's a valid question! The battery is an IMR 18350...and neither old or faulty. I'll need to test the battery further though. Thanks for noticing.

    I don't know if you can answer this, but I recently got one of these on Ebay. When my batteries (mainly 18650) are almost charged the mA output from the charger gets really low, between 10 and 60mA. Is this normal for the D4? I haven't been able to get a straight answer from anyone. Thank you!!!

    • @Lightsngear
      @Lightsngear  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. This is normal. All good chargers do that. I believe it's a safety precaution...so the charger doesn't overcharge the battery.

    • @Mentorcase
      @Mentorcase 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is because it switches from CC constant current to CV constant voltage at 4.2 volts.

    • @mattvonnerf3495
      @mattvonnerf3495 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's completely normal in order to safely charge your batteries without overheating or just dumping charge into the cells as this can radically reduce the overall lifespan of your IMR's. It's just a safety feature and a welcome one at that!

  • @GoogleAccount-cj6gy

    Now I have to decide between this one and the Thrunite MCC-4. They're both about the same price and have the same features; only this one has the charging display light "off" switch. That feature is unimportant to me though, so again.... which one?
    I would only need this for 18650's. I already own a PowerEx MH-C9000 for my AAA & AA Eneloops.
    Any suggestions?
    btw: thank you for your video!

    • @Lightsngear
      @Lightsngear  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      posting id I'm not familiar with the MCC-4. There seems to be a lot of new chargers out these days. It all comes down to personal preference, and choice of features I think. The PowerEx is good for NiMH's. At least with these newer units, they handle both NiMH and Lithiums equally as well.

    • @mattvonnerf3495
      @mattvonnerf3495 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd go with the Nitecore, I've had mine over a year and it charges all kinds of rechargeable cells, I prefer the feel, the build quality and finish of the Nitecore, I'm not using it for vaping, I use mine for Nerf blasters where I can't fit a LiPo in the battery tray and just use stock motors.
      The Nitecore also has an ability to "resurrect" as best it can within reason, a fully drained and left for a while discharged 14500 or 18650 that would ordinarily be completely useless and only worth recycling (or binning), I'm sure it does the same with other rechargeable batteries too.

  • @FormigoAtomico

    Thanks for the review. I am considering to buy this charger but I have 2 doubts that maybe you can clarify.
    1. Is the Nitecore Digicharger D4 noisily?
    I have a Z4 charger that is very noisily, making a permanent whistle while charging.
    2. Is Nitecore Digicharger D4 compatible with NiZn 1.6 volts AA and AAAbatteries?
    The factory says it is compatible with ALL batteries, but NiZn is not quoted. I sent an e-mail to the factory, but got no answer.
    Many thanks for your time preparing the video and answering the people!

    • @Lightsngear
      @Lightsngear  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Formigo Atômico Thanks for your questions. The D4 makes NO noise whatsoever! There's no internal fan, or anything else to cause any sounds. The D4 can charge 1.2 volt NiMH (AA & AAA) batteries as well as 3.6 & 3.7 lithium-ion batteries. If you'd like to read more, and see additional pictures, (as well as buy it) you can click lightsngear.com/?p=1408 where you'll also find a purchase link.

    • @Lightsngear
      @Lightsngear  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Formigo Atômico Sorry, I didn't address the 1.6v. Do you own many NiZN batteries? Tests and reports from users have shown that they don't perform or last as long as 1.3 volt NiMH's. From what I've seen, an NiMH/Li-ion charger won't charge NiZN batteries. If you don't have any 1.6v batteries at the moment and are trying to decide whether to get them...I would seriously suggest only getting NiMH. You can do so much more with an NiMH charger than you can with one that only charges NiZN cells.

    • @FormigoAtomico
      @FormigoAtomico 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Syrbuff
      Thanks for your useful answer.
      I have a number of NiZn batteries that are reaching the end of the service life. The good is that they have a higher voltage (1.8 volts when full charged), but they loose power fast. Now they last just 2 weeks in my wireless mouse that requires a single AA.
      Seems that the users are having a good experience with NiMH batteries and is likely that I will adopt them. I am considering the Rayovac Platinum that has a reasonable cost and good reviews.
      Glad to speak with you!

    • @Lightsngear
      @Lightsngear  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Formigo Atômico Thank you! As my final comment... (for what it's worth). I won't badmouth the Ray-o-Vac...BUT, Eneloops are STILL the "gold standard" among NiMH users, as far as power retention and lasting quality are concerned.

    Great for the price, but I don't like how current drops if you put in more batteries. Also don't like that it charges at 750, that's gonna get my eneloops super hot. I guess this would be good for a spare charger to charge my 18650's

    • @Lightsngear

      +bigflytrap Yes, 750 is the top current. But I've never known Eneloops to get anything more than warm on that setting. I charged some at 1A the other day and they were fine. However if you put 3 or 4 in it, it drops to 350.

      +Syrbuff It may depend on the generation of eneloop, there quality is still good but the chemistry between generations is a bit different. also the amount of wear could change internal resistance. I have the second to newest generation ones and they'll take almost any amount of current my charger will give them and they only get fairly warm.

    That is really to bad that the total charge current is dropped down when more batteries are added. My charger doesn't do that. I can set the charge current up to two amps on two slots and 1 amp on the rest. It is similar but has more current so that I can fast charge a cell if needed quickly. Fast charging shouldn't be done very often though as it is bad for the cell.

    9V batteries are missing... also, I found that it doesn't like when batteries have dropped below ~0.75V, it gives error and you have to manually re-try(sometimes many many times!) to give it enough voltage so it starts charging normally. Otherwise, a solid charger!

    • @Lightsngear
      @Lightsngear  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sandw0rm 9v batteries are missing? They're not rechargeable? And 0.75 volts??? What type of battery are you referring to? NiMH or Lithium? NO lithium battery should ever be drained below 2.8 volts. And if it was...the XTAR chargers are about the only ones I know that can "revive" batteries taken down too far. NiMH can of course be drained much farther.

    • @Sandw0rm
      @Sandw0rm 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Syrbuff I have rechargeable 9V batteries(Ni-MH). Got them pretty cheap from eBay(I think less than 2€/pcs). I'm using them in smoke detectors and other 9V devices I have. I'm referring to NiMH batteries, very old and poor ones, too. I read from batteryuniversity.com(batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_restore_nickel_based_batteries) that to restore NiMH batteries, you have to drain them to 0.4V very slowly(~20mA) and then charge them.

    • @Sandw0rm
      @Sandw0rm 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Which is better the Xtar VC4 or the Nitecore D4? I am going to use the charger to recharge 18650 li-ion batteries. About 3 to 4 at a time.

    • @Lightsngear
      @Lightsngear  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both chargers will do the job. However if charging time is an issue for you, then I might suggest the XTAR, since for more than 2 cells at a time, it will use a slightly higher current. The D4 will charge at 350mA if more than 2 cells are charging at once. The XTAR will use a full 1A current when charging up to 2 cells at once.

    • @Lightsngear
      @Lightsngear  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      With 3 or 4 cells charging, the VC 4 will use 500mA, and the D4 will use 350mA.

    • @GeoD007
      @GeoD007 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Syrbuff Thank you! I was a bit concerned by the issue of dominant charging bays. I figured both the VC4 and D4 would have this issue. But I was trying to figure out which would offer the best balanced charge for 3 or 4 batteries at a time.
      Though admittedly one workaround could be to alternate each battery through the charging bays. I'll be using 2 sets of 3 LG 18650 batteries which I'll be "marrying" to my device. Which is why I'll be labeling them and alternating them among the battery bays of said device. So I guess I should do the same when charging them.
      Thank you again for the advice. I'll go with the VC4 in that case.

      So, if I'm understanding your question...you're asking how long it takes to charge 4 - 3100mAh 18650 batteries? Naturally it would depend on what voltage they were when the charge began. But, seeing as the D4 only charges at 375mA when ALL four slots are being used, it would take awhile. I'm only guessing....but even if all 4 cells were at 50%, I'd say 7-9 hours.

      As much as I don't like Efest I'd say the Luc V4 is pretty much the best deal. Cheaper then that suggestion too and also offers 1a charging for 4 and 2 amp for 2

    I have one of these, I simply want to say that the one I have SUCKS. why? because I have to fiddle with the batteries until this device notices there are batteries in the bay waiting to be charged. it almost seems that the springs have gone bad after only 3 weeks of use ( I charge 4 batteries every night ) ( LGH2 18650's)

      +Rompido Chased 4 batteries EVERY night? Are you sure it's not the batteries themselves?

    • @rompido5372
      @rompido5372 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Syrbuff yes I'm sure. before I purchased this version I purchased the D2 version. that one still acknowledges the LGH2 18650'S immediately after placing the batteries in. while using the same batteries inn the D4 requires fiddling. I can post a reply video if you like

      Rompido Chased
      I believe you, and it's unfortunate. I guess what I was driving at was maybe the condition of the batteries, or the type of "button" on the top and how contact was being made in the slot. You might want to make sure the positive and negative ends in the charging bays are all the same, and clean too, of course. They're probably fine, but I'm just trying to think of possible issues.

      Paul Basketcase Most chargers will enter trickle-charge mode automatically once the main charge has completed.

      hold the mode button down for 1 sec, goes in to low charge mode. (meant to be better for battery longevity)

      ***** has mAh info?? Where? I didn't see anywhere that info. only the bars.

      romantashev Nitecore D4 can not test the internal resistance (ohm) and capacity (mah). Which is quite disappointing.

      @AirTien 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      romantashev you should buy OPUS BT-C3100 for those features. Nitecore D4 is only handsome looking, but rather "dumb" and lack of battery information.

      Tien Cheng [...]Nitecore D4 can not test the internal resistance (ohm) and capacity (mah). OPUS BT-C 3100 is the best. Xtar VC4 can not test the internal resistance. Which is quite disappointing.[...] I agree !!!

      This is now an "old" charger. Your best bet for additional features is to look at some of the newer ones I've reviewed. MiBoxer for instance.
