Nothing soft here, that sound is still good hard rock and blues in 1964
Keiths drums totally push the sound over the edge into the more energetic vibe that a lot of other bands didn't have.

Keith Moon used Premier drums back in those days, perhaps not coincidentally a very similar kit to Ringo Starr's before he switched to Ludwig.
Btw, Ringo switched to Ludwig, perhaps not coincidentally, after observing Andy White in EMI studios with a kit very similar to the one Starr would make famous.

@anonymusum Maybe not from Day One, but The High Numbers/The Who sounded pretty damned good for a fresh group with teenaged members.
I started a group like this back when I was in high school, and believe me, we didn't sound this good. Our drummer didn't have as good of chops, and our vocals were anemic. However, in a short time we developed some pretty good harmonies, our drummer bought a better kit, and we started to gel. We still weren't as good as The High Numbers; but then again, the songs we attempted were more complex.

This is flippin' ace; everything I love about early Who. So much energy: chunky and ringing guitar, massive bouncing bass, heavy and frantic drum flourishes and screamy vocals. You can almost hear Can't Explain forming at one point in song one, I think. They own Ooh Poo Pah Doo, a song I either love or hate, depending on who is covering it. If I had to choose, only being able to see one band live ever, The Who in around '65 would be my choice. I love this.

I wasn't old enough by a few years to get in but used to sit outside the entrance door ,on the wall and get totally mesmerised by the music within this small basement club. What was I to know this was going to be such a big influence on the music scene and that Harrow and Wealdstone was such a Mecca for the new mod and soul sounds of this era. Living only a mile way I couldn't wait for Tuesday nights to listen to them both as the High numbers and The Detours .Even saw Moon as drummer for the Beachcombers where they practised at the conservative hall behind Harrow on the Hill station. I just loved the excitement that was happening so close to home. Anyone recognise any local Harrow mods in any of the shots inside? Railway now gone but the 4 blocks of flats built on the site do hold the names of all 4 members of the group. So it should. Love to here from any Harrow mods and their memories.

I remember when I was very young in the late sixties, I was more into science etc, but THE WHO made an impact. Tommy, etc. I remember in October 1971, I was twelve, and this snobby kid came in playing Baba O'Reilly on a tape deck. The intro mesmorized me. I had never heard sounds like that before. I asked if I could have the casette. He told me to fuck myself. Anyway I asked who it was, the teacher said Cat Stevens, so I went to all nearby record stores trying to find that "Cat Stevens" song. Finally a rock station played it and said who it was. I have had fifty copies of WHO's next since. I remember my parents thought I was amusing when I would air guitar to Pete, with their LIVE and LEEDS lp, the feedbacks in Shaking All over. Funny.

Not especially into the Who but l am impressed by the material they chose to cover. No internet and you could not hear this stuff in the radio. In this respect they were no different from the other great British bands of the era who all had good sets of ears planted firmly to the ground. They picked up on music, mostly black, largely ignored by the mainstream on both sides of the Atlantic. They then played it back to Americans who were barely aware of the riches right in front of them. All because they listened without the filter of racism…

@@roygavin8219 That was London but young musicians seemed able to pick up on the good stuff all over the country. It’s really quite remarkable when you think about it. It was what fuelled the British Invasion and laid the foundation for what became and still is a powerhouse global industry.

What a location. Curtains tightly closed, so that the neighbours couldn`t see what was going on. Youngsters that are now in their late (maybe)early 70s swaying to the music. Short time before "My Generation" became one of the first proto-metal songs. A short but intensive documentary of times long gone.
