Yeah, that tugged at my heart strings
She had been through so much at that point, but David was by far the worst kind of monster. I'm sure Bella Ramsey will deliver a more distant, closed off Ellie after this, in a way that's going to hurt the audience.

Her innocence was taken completely away in that moment and unfortunately it took someone that was a scumbag before the outbreak too bring out her demons and make her grow up in the worst possible way

Teacher to preacher…was anyone else super creeped out by David saying he was a “teacher to kids your age” knowing what we know by the end of the episode.
I didn’t think the tv show could make him scarier than the game, but some of his dialogue was CHILLING.

Yup, I've been thinking about that after realizing a couple reaction videos in, and boy, does it creep me out so much more than the cannibalism (at least you can justify that if they're not killing people with survival) 😬😬😬 The actor did an amazing job portraying a total psycho 👏
Cannibal, pedophile and cult leader... Yeah, the literal only way the show could make him any creepier than the game did was by implying that he had easy access to children who trusted him before the world went to shit.
@@Miroslava_Ivanova i would agree but Joel only killed one person. There were 3 bodies hanging in that room, I guarantee that was people they found out on the road. Probably what would've happened to Joel and Ellie if the crew in Episode 6 had caught them. Plus, the fact they kept it hidde, that he fed that girl's father to her with a smile, he was getting off on it.

At 14:30 when Adam said "Tell Bryan I said Hello" I laughed out loud as I'm pretty sure that is Bryan's Knife that guy just got shanked with.
Remember how David said he was a math teacher? How many children did he hurt? It’s horrifying to think about.
I was wondering how dark they were gonna make the *DARKEST* part of the game. And yeah, they did not hold back. They made David in his last minutes even more disturbing than the game made him. And when David tells Ellie that she has a violent heart he had NOOOO idea. I would honestly put her near the top of the list of the deadliest people in tv or video games. When she is chopping the hell out of David it is cathartic at first but then you see the tragedy because Ellie needed to tap into all of the darkness and violence in her heart to survive. And then we get the scene of Joel hugging Ellie and calling her baby girl😭😭😭.
I kinda wished that Troy Baker (the original actor who played Joel in the game) was cast as someone far more important than James. Still he was amazing and he had an awesome death scene, and it was darkly funny that video game Joel was killed by tv Ellie. Also wish that they gave Ellie her trademark bow and arrow, but hopefully we get that in Part 2.

I think it wouldn’t make sense if she had a bow. I mean, she is only 14 years old and it takes quite a lot of strength to pull back the string to actually fire a good shot.

What I like most about this show? Ellie doesn't make the obviously stupid decisions. She's smart. She doesn't trust anyone, as someone raised in the environment she was would behave. Great writing.
Really great writing, because it's not only how she deals with their circumstances, it's also all the things we know but she doesn't. A lot of people have said "Oof, sterilize that needle" or "Wash that wound" or "Are you supposed to inject penicillin straight into it?", but since Fedra's goal is to teach them how to be soldiers, why would they teach them biology or germ theory? She really wouldn't know.
They keep everything so authentic to how old she is and the world they live in. I love that attention to detail.
Adam is the first reactor I've seen who kept his enthusiasm after the 11th blow. Jay ran out of joy at 8.

Yes , specifically this was pencillin G which he had (injection type). Bacteria is what it fights against and when it cant due to bacterial resistance, you would add something like clavulanic acid to the penicillin antibiotic so it acts correctly as a beta lactam drug.

Joel calling Ellie baby girl broke me at the end of a tough episode. Watching Ellie go through all that was rough. She's been through so much. Joel finally acknowledging that she is a daughter to him now brought out all the heart feels. If Pedro and Bella don't get Emmy and Golden Globes nomination s there is no justice in Hollywood land

legitimately curious question about protocol/etiquette for using pronouns for non-binary actors portraying a cis character.. I think you did it correctly, using them when referring to Bella as an actor and using she/her when referring to Ellie. You're the first person I've noticed do this, so I would love to hear from anyone within the non-binary or ally community who knows the respectful terminology we should all strive for when conversing. Thx!

My mom: flinching at all the torture and violence scenes. My dad and I: well they had it coming. And me laughing and cheering Ellie and Joel on while also cringing. I knew the canibal plot point and my mom guessed it right away but my dad scoffed and said we were being stupid. He ate his words. When that one dude was sneaking around the basement I internally was like oh he’s about to get merked. Joel went full Mando with the sneak attacks this episode. But man the last minute or two were so disturbing and heart wrenching. I’ve seen some TLU game play and David had no idea how right he was when he said that Ellie has a violent heart. But her screams when she was hacking at him were pure anguish and feelings too big for her. And then my heart absolutely broke when Joel hugged her and called her baby girl. Aside from the lack of music I think it was more emotional than the game. In this version she didn’t even say anything. In the game she did.
Troy Baker BODIED his scene work in this. I really want to see him in more live action stuff. And my god, Bella Ramsey is a force of nature. Amazing.

This was the most intense episode by far. They are now officially father and daughter, especially when Joel called Ellie "baby girl".
since the start, bella ramsey has evidently, and effortlessly, proved just how phenomenal she is as ellie williams - every episode continues to prove that, and i truly and genuinely hope that ‘the last of us’ leads her to the emmy because she deserve it! ❤
Loved Troy’s performance in this episode can’t wait to see Ashley next week (Joel and Ellie from the games)

When I was in high school, at my old home, there was a field across the street that would get mowed by a huge tractor with a mowing attachment on the back of it so the guy only had to make 3 loops around it. So it cut quite a large area, and was very heavy duty. Well, I was on my computer playing StarCraft, the original, and I heard a loud bang, glass breaking, and it sounded like it came from my bed room. I ran in there and it took me a few moments to figure out what happened - there was a metal baseball bat sticking out of the side of my bed mattress and it was missing a chunk out of the handle and the whole cap off the end of the grip. My window was broken, the screen was ripped, and it took a significant effort to get the bat out of my bed. Yea, the tractor hit the bat and launched it like a missile through my window and into the side of my bed. Thank god it hit there and didn't hurt anyone.
I love how they made David even creepier by making him an eighth grade math teacher in contact with children before the world ended

Joel calling Ellie "baby girl" caused me to shed a tear when I heard it in the video game. It had the same effect here. Bella better be getting an Emmy nomination for her work in this series. She is Ellie in my eyes.

Most important episode in the entire series of games/show. You finally see Joel's cruelty and ruthlessness & how his worst characteristics have rubbed off on Ellie. The creator was adamant that this come through, & they did it brilliantly here. Often, the violence committed by "heroes" is excused or even cheered. Not so here. It's brutal & gross & traumatic, as it should be to all watching.

Joel's and Ellie's ruthlessness is totally justified. Not a case of it "rubbing off" on anyone. At the University THEY chose to attack Joel and Ellie as they tried to sneak away. THEY chose to hunt Joel. David chose to kidnap, imprison and threaten to rape or kill Ellie. THEY got what they deserved.
I was cheering.....I thought they had plenty of excuses. Not sure what you're talking about.
@Seth Bledsoe Not sure if you've played the games or listened interviews with Neil over the years, but the intention is to make violence abhorrent, no matter who commits it. The concept that, no matter how understandable it may be, it destroys our humanity & ultimately makes us the things we're committing violence against. That's the point of the entire project, from conception to today. I'd encourage you to listen to Neil & Craig discuss this. The companion podcast is pretty great & there are a lot of interviews with Neil available on TH-cam.
That grown man was about to rape a child and then enslave her. The kid stabbed him 30 times in retaliation: I don't consider that "bad" in any way. I don't see that as cruel or something that needs to be excused. And I definitely cheered for it. As for the guys Joel torture/interrogated, yeah I guess it was kinda hardcore. But they kidnapped what is essentially his surrogate daughter so they sort of had it coming too.
!Penicillin does come from a type of mold therefore it is fungi. Adam is correct! Loved how it was used in the show.
All the lines about love are so important. This show is all about how dangerous unconditional love is.
And when the cast news broke, people really were doubting the casting of Bella as Ellie. Hope those people feel stupid now

The David Arc was my favourite part of the game by far, and this episode did not disappoint. Ellie stabbing David at the end was even more cathartic than in the game. Bella Ramsey is absolutely killing it, in every sense.

Truer words….
In a show full of some of the saddest episodes of any show I've ever seen, this was the most difficult to watch. Not feelings of sadness exclusively, but just suuuuper hard to watch. Bella's acting was heart wrenching.
I remember being disturbed by what David tried to do to Ellie in the game but seeing Bella portray in the show hit me in a way I (should have but) didn't expect. I sobbed for ten minutes afterward. Bravo but holy shit it hurt. As soon as Joey said, "It's ok, baby girl." I was done for.
I'm a former English professor/writer, and when I wrote about the first rape maybe 10 years after it happened, at age 17 in undergrad, all I could see was the fantasy I had every night before bed when I was 7 years-old: Exactly what Ellie did to David at the end. When my fellow writing classmates read the short story, they loved it--but didn't understand the violence daydreamed up by a little girl, just swinging until your strength is gone. I didn't feel compelled to explain. They don't know from violence until they're raped at age 7.
Also, the fact Ellie kills Joel again (Troy Baker), is Priceless.
I really appreciate Adam's Die hard reference, 'cause that's exactly where my brain went, too 😅 I loved the reaction, you guys are always so expressive and in an episode like this one, with so many dark bits it's even more apparent. I squealed/screamed when Joel called Ellie baby girl, it got me so much! I wish we could have gotten more Troy, but the little we did get was still so good and the actor playing David was just immaculate in his portrayal of a total psycho.

Ellie saving herself was a bold decision, and so incredibly well done. No white knight, just a girl desperately fighting to survive.
I love how they gave Troy Baker a role in scenes which never involved Joel, so it was all new territory for him to explore. And then to culminate in him getting killed by Ellie was just the icing on the cake.

Remember: the cut scenes in the game are about 2 hours. It seems longer because you play the characters and probably, like most of us, die a lot. The last part of us game one can be done easily in 60 or 75 minutes

Ellie was handling things pretty good all things considered. She's still learning and a very good skill for her to learn is how to effectively cover your tracks, in every sense of the word.
